Probably the most talented bunch to ever play together. Each one is great in the own right simply amazing. Paul Schaefer playing bluegrass how awesome is that
BLUE GRASS !!!! Classic Blue Grass song and a collection of great musicians and yes , the banjo is the best. The " actor " in the gray sweater with the banjo is Steve Martin , Earl Scruggs is the older guy sitting down and playing the banjo and two of his sons are also playing along with Vince Gill , the ZZ TOP looking guy on keyboards is Leon Russell , and Paul Schafer is the bald guy on piano
This song was originally just for banjo. The one sitting down is Earl Scruggs. The banjo player standing is Steve Martin. The piano player is Paul Schaefer.
Imagine having a family of men, father, uncles, grandfather on the banjo playing music like this, this was my family gatherings throughout my childhood. They all played by ear too. Isn’t this awesome!! Love your reaction! 😍
I first heard Foggy Mountain Breakdown while watching the Bonnie And Clyde movie back around 1972...been a fan ever since. Earl Scruggs and his partner Lester Flatt also appeared on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show several times and performed the show's theme song.
The man in the center is Earl Scruggs(notice the name on the head of the banjo), banjo lead, following in order are: Glen Duncan, fiddle; Randy Scruggs, acoustic guitar; Steve Martin (yes that Steve Martin), 2nd banjo; Vince Gill, 1st electric; Marty Stuart, mandolin; Gary Scruggs (both Gary, oldest, and Randy, middle, are Earl's sons), harmonica; Albert Lee (yes, he is that good, and that is his foot tapping while he tears that guitar up), 2nd electric; back to Earl then to: Paul Schaffer (Letterman band leader), piano; Jerry Douglas, dobro; Leon Russel, organ. Keeping up the whole time is Glenn Worf, bass; Harry Stinson, drums. Some of these guys are ELITE musicians, I mean the best that do it.
Paul Shafer on piano, longtime bandleader for David Letterman, Steve Martin, actor on banjo. Marty Stewart on mandolin. Too many to name. All Allstars.
In 2002, Scruggs won a Grammy award for a 2001 performance[clarification needed] which featured Steve Martin on second banjo, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, and Randy Scruggs on guitars, Marty Stuart on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Leon Russell on organ, Gary Scruggs on harmonica, and Paul Shaffer on piano, among others.
I went to the Kentucky ROMP festival the second time with my wife and a big tent. Del McCoury and then Marty Stewart were to be the last bands of the night. It started raining and then pouring. They had big wooden covered areas for picnics and the two bands got together and played in there. They did their own songs back and forth or jams together. I was so close to the front where folks stood and it was amazing! Got to the tent and it had so much rain and weight it broke a tent pole. I so miss having a mandolin.
I can’t believe anyone would be mad or upset that you don’t know these artists ~ this music was written waaaay before you were born! So happy you’re curious enough and open minded enough to explore the world of music!
Ace! This would be fascinating in the sense that it's a band that's right smack dab in the middle of your generation but I bet you are unaware of it. There is still quite a Bluegrass resurgence in younger generations, although it really was a big phenomenon maybe 15 years ago or something. But it's still a big deal and the band trampled by turtles, is a band that was young when this phenomenon exploded, and so they were playing music from decades before but putting a modern Twist on it, and they were so damn good and from what I understand they're still touring and active. Wait So Long is a fantastic introduction to them and a fan favorite and a hit for them in that genre. The studio cut is great as is, but there is a music video version that is basically them sitting around in a room playing it. And both are quite fascinating. Here is a link to the music video version, I bet you would absolutely love this: m.th-cam.com/video/vGh-EvmZVCQ/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUgdHJhbXBsZWQgYnkgdHVydGxlcyB3YWl0IHNvIGxvbmc%3D
The bald guy is Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's band leader for over 30 years. He was also in the original SNL band, and was music director for Belushi and Aykroyd when they performed as "The Blues Brothers".
Cousin It, aka Leon Russell, leaves me thinking of that one guy in The Oak Ridge Boys. But Russell rose to legendary status for his work with dozens of legends during his career, including J.J. Cale, Ronnie Hawkins, Ricky Nelson, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Elton John, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and the Rolling Stones.
the bald guy is Paul Schaeffer (of david letterman) banjo player is the great Steve martin the other piano player (zz top) is leon russell triva: lester flatt (who has since passed away) and Earl Scruggs also performed the theme song to The Beverly Hillbillies
They also did the theme song for to the " Beverly Hillbillies " If you like banjo music you should listen to " Dueling Banjo's " from the movie Deliverance.
Earl Scruggs With Glen Duncan, Randy Scruggs, Steve Martin, Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Gary Scruggs, Albert Lee, Paul Shaffer, Jerry Douglas And Leon Russell Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Instrumental)
That’s a roomful of talent, right there. The instrument you questioned is a dobro. It’s a guitar with a special resonator on. I think this song was in the movie Bonnie and Clyde. This is essentially Bluegrass.
Earl was in Flatt and Scruggs with guitarist/singer Lester Flatt. Earl and Steve Martin weren't playing with a flat guitar pick. They're finger picking with a thumb pick for volume and to protect the thumb. It's known as Scruggs picking, he invented the technique.
The guy with the red electric guitar and curly grey hair is Albert Lee. He's a British guy that is a highly respected Nashville-style guitar player. Check out Eric Clapton's "Just One Night" live album, with Albert Lee. "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" show off Albert's playing the most, but the entire album is incredible. 🤙😎
Ha ha, I think of ZZ Top when I see this, too. I see that somebody else mentioned that this guy was Leon Russell. Yeah, that was Earl Scruggs sitting. He had quite a life. He survived a plane crash, a terrible auto wreck that messed up his hips and put him in the hospital for about three months. One of his sons died by suicide. Still, he carried on, so that's role model stuff. Earl Scruggs also came out against the Vietnam war, which made me look up to him even more. Protesting our involvement in a war wouldn't be the done thing for someone in the country music genre, so I imagine that put him on the outs with some of his own folks. He said what he thought was the right thing to say, though, and that says a lot about a person. I'm from the DC area, and country music has not historically been my thing, but I love this song, and I admire Earl Scruggs. I just wish I knew more about him when he was still alive.
Fun fact: Earl Scruggs brought us the "three finger picking" style of banjo and Steve Martin, (who has also played the banjo for half a century) brought back the "claw hammer" style. Not just for a reaction, but for anyone in the comments who is interested, go check out "Me and Paul Revere". It is a true retelling of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, told from the horses perspective! Steve also often tours with the Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass band. (Steve also wrote a hymnal for atheists called "Atheists Don't Have No Songs. He performs it acapella with the Steep Canyon Rangers. That's hilarious and is worth a look-see!)
Hi Ace. Since you loved this Bluegrass song, I know that you will enjoy a song by The Osborne Brothers called Rocky Top. It’s an upbeat Bluegrass song that got a lot of playing time on the radio here. Keep enjoying the music Ace! Love your reactions, keep up the good work!
Such a jam - a completely different song than what Steppenwolf put out. That's Leon Russell with the white hair and beard. Solo legend and also toured with Joe Cocker often.
Grew up listening to Bluegrass music. It’s like lightning running through my veins, when I listen to it. Bill Monroe is the Grandfather of Bluegrass. Banjo players are some of the most talented instrumentalists in my opinion.
............ over the years I have purchased 7 banjos.............over the years I have sold 7 banjos....ha.......I LOVE the sound of the banjo....I just would never discipline myself to take lessons.....ugh.
Super talented collection of musicians cutting loose on a classic song... does it get any better than this? Want to hear the man who invented bluegrass? Check out Bill Monroe (and Marty Stuart) play "SOUTHERN FLAVOR" th-cam.com/video/9NcCgsAMxhs/w-d-xo.html. If you ain't dancing, check your pulse because you might be dead.
Hey Ace, please react to The Sylvers - Boogie Fever (Midnight Special 1976). It is such a fun catchy tune. They are like a Jackson 5 type family band. They put on a performance that makes you smile the whole way through!!!
If you didn't know, Earl Scruggs invented this style of banjo picking years ago. All subsequent bluegrass banjo players play in this style, called "Scruggs picking". This breakdown, an instrumental composition where all the musicians take turns soloing, is Scrugg's most famous piece, as it was used as the main theme for the movie "Bonnie & Clyde". Every player here is famous. The white-haired guy is Leon Russell, who has a very long and illustrious career as a pianist, writer, singer, arranger, band leader, etc. Vince Gill on electric guitar, Marty Stuart on mandolin, Steve Martin on banjo also, Paul Schaefer on piano, others I recognize but can't recall names.
So much talent on this stage! Sensory overload every time I watch it. And yeah, Steve Martin rocks here. I used to have such a crush on Marty Stewart (mandolin)...and the smiles all round! Yeah, love this video to the moon and back!
Steve Martin is the actor/comedian you recognized, and banjo player extraordinaire. The bald guy is Paul Schaefer, who used to be the band leader on Late Night with David Letterman. Earl Scruggs was the original player of the song when it was released for the movie, Bonnie and clyde... played as Flatt and Scruggs... a worthwhile listen too.
Hi Ace! I really like what you're doing, listening to so many different styles, groups, and performers! I've put together a (pretty long) list of what I think is great music that reactors should know about and be able to investigate to see if they want to react to them. I'll be happy to pass it along if you want to see it--just contact me at the email address on my account, OK? If not, no harm, no foul, I still like your interest and willingness to investigate lots of different stuff, you're a man after my own interests too!
banjo player that looks familiar is STEVE MARTIN comedian, been in movies and used to do stand up comedy, but hes always been a killer banjo player -- guy with white hair and beard is LEON RUSSEL
The guitar like instrument with the metal resonator is a dobro. There is a small madoline. Steve Martin is an actor and comedian besides being a banjo player. Earl Scruggs was a bluegrass legend who found a wider audience by playing the theme song for the Beverly Hillbillies television show.
Imagine having a family of men, father, uncles, grandfather on the banjo playing music like this, this was my family gatherings throughout my childhood. They all played by ear too. Isn’t this awesome!! Love your reaction! 😍

Every performer world class, famous in their own right. Just jammin together and having a great time.
That was a room full of great musicians, actors and comedians.
This song is the ultimate jam session. Just a bunch of great musicians enjoying each other's company while playing great music.
This song was originally just for banjo. The one sitting down is Earl Scruggs. The banjo player standing is Steve Martin. The piano player is Paul Schaefer.
Just to add electric guitar is Vince gill, mandolin is Marty Stuart. All legends on their own

One of the most amazingly star-studded musical conglomerations ever put together!!! Pure fire!

The plucked violin-like instrument is a mandolin. It’s tuned like a violin but has paired strings, like a twelve string guitar.
I absolutely love your energy! ❤
The pianist is Paul Schaeffer, David Letterman's band director and sidekick for decades. He started in TV on SNL.
This also reminds me of the Andy Griffith show when Andy would play guitar with the Darlings when they came down from the mountain lol
I can’t believe anyone would be mad or upset that you don’t know these artists ~ this music was written waaaay before you were born! So happy you’re curious enough and open minded enough to explore the world of music!
The gentleman with the light, longish curly hair playing the red electric guitar is British. . . Albert Lee aka Mr. Telecaster!
These guys are legends. Yes that is Steve Martin -- the oroginal "wild and crazy guy"!
The guy who is playing the piano is Paul Shaffer from the David letterman show show

Hey that guy playing the fiddle is awesome too !
That's Glen Duncan. He's top shelf. I play fiddle, but not like that.
The bald guy is Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's band leader for over 30 years.
He was also in the original SNL band, and was music director for Belushi and Aykroyd when they performed as "The Blues Brothers".

Good stuff. Room full of stars and legends.
the bald guy is Paul Schaeffer (of david letterman)

One million notes and a whole lot of fun.
A great collaboration of musicians! Great tune! Classic!

One my favorite guitar players, Albert Lee, is his usual amazing self there...And then there's the amazing Jerry Douglas on dobro...
"What instrument is that?" That's a dobro, played by the best, Mr. Jerry Douglas!
Not surprised you didn't recognize all the musicians, but thought Steve Martin would look familiar to you.
