I'm the proud owner of a 2003 Rav 4 with 5 speed manual transmission front wheel drive and just about 151,000 miles on it. I was recently rear ended and it's being repaired now but some people think I'm crazy fixing up an 18 year old car and I tell them it's an 18 year old Toyota, I've still got another 150,000 miles to go !

Just an update on post-collision repairs. The rear end looks brand new with the replaced spare tire cover and bumper work done. I live in Texas and the clear- coat has suffered, especially on the hood, so I had it repainted and also replaced a frayed drivers seat belt too. Feels like a new car ("almost")

I've put rav4 steel wheels with goodrich 225 70 R16 tyres on mine. The interior is thoughtfully designed and I really like being able to easily remove the rear passenger seats. If you change the oil regularly these engines can last a long way.

I also have a 2001 RAV4 auto with 83k on the clock. Runs good never been stuck even in a country 3 times bigger than UK with only 20% paved/tarmac roads, the rest is mud/gravel that turns to red custard when it rains but thankfully no snow☹️ so cannot complain with temps between 85f winter to 120f summer.
I do I have one mod only and that's a spare wheel cover which says "I may not be fast, but I can go anywhere" which makes the locals smile when they see it. Run it on 215s Goodyear all terrain tyres.

Hello, I recently bought a Rav 4 2002, 2.0 petrol from Italy without any rust, a very well preserved example with 98,000 km. The first owner was a 1936 year born. The car has not been driven for the last 3 years and has been sitting in a garage. Inside, everything is like new, as well as underneath and the engine. I am fascinated by this car. Yes, I bought it quite expensive and many people criticized me that it was a lot of money for such an old car. But I know very well the quality of Japanese cars from those years, I have owned over 30 cars and they were all Japanese. Greetings to all !

I love the car too (: It doesn't get as bad here in the East Coast as far as snow compared to you guys up North but I've never really had any problems going over snow during the winters the past 6+ years :D Definitely think this car will get me through another 5-10 years no problem! All I do is Oil changes, Tires changes, Air filters, Coolant, and just the occasional car wash after winter salt. Thanks for the content love the mountains (:

The second generation Rav4 is based on the Camry / Corolla / All-Trac with the addition of ABS front and rear ABS plastic body panels to keep rust at a minimum. My 2002 Rav4 still even has the original exhaust and since the Camry and Corolla use the same parts as the Rav4, parts can be easily purchased at most retail auto parts stores. Coupled with a 2.0 liter engine and AWD the Rav4 is a beast in the snow and excellent on gas in both the winter and summer! Any Rav4 should easily last +300,000 kms with basic maintenance.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle I´ve had no issues with the car since 2017 when i bought it. Along normal services, main thing is to clean the mass air filter if you´re constantly driving in sandy dusty terrain. I do it myself in every 80.000kms, easy but takes a little time. At the moment seems that the original rear wheel bearings are soon done. You can keep the car up and running with low costs giving what it offers. Price-quality is second to none.

Good take on the second-gen RAV4! I bought mine just about a year ago and have put 13K miles(about 21K km) on it, with overall mileage at 210K(338K km). Mine is an '04 with the 2.4L engine as well as the 5-speed manual; kind of a rare combination as I've only seen one manual second-gen for sale in my area besides this one. While the 5-speed manuals are more robust than the automatics, they can develop issues where 5th gear starts grinding and eventually popping out; this can be fixed without removing the gearbox(which is a major and expensive undertaking due to the layout of the AWD system). My particular RAV4 had this issue when I bought it; I elected to have the gearbox completely rebuilt as I want to keep this little beast. At this mileage I have a bit of oil consumption; about 1L/1000mi(or 1600km). I figure I'll be due for a replacement engine in a few years, but I'd rather do that and keep this one on the road.
I live and work in Colorado; I use my personal vehicles for work and I do see harsh conditions and dirt roads at times. With proper tires these are great in foul weather; I've never had any issue with traction. The AWD system in the first and second gen RAV4s were taken directly from the Celica GT-Four rally car; which I also own(and was crazy enough to use as a winter vehicle up until I bought the RAV4, haha). I find the 50/50 torque split more responsive than the computer-controlled type in newer vehicles; paired with the manual transmission it's a great combination.
To answer comments about fuel mileage I'm getting around 23-26mpg(10.2-9.0 L/100km) using regular grade fuel. It's not quite as economical as the newer, computer-controlled AWD systems but I'll trade the efficiency hit for reliability. My typical range is around 320mi(515km), though a lot of my driving is on highways or back roads with not much city use.
Overall, this is a great small CUV with a bit more in the way of practicality than newer models. The low liftover height, ample cargo capacity(especially with those seats removed) and the great maneuverability make it a great work vehicle. I'm still very happy with mine nearly a year later. I hope you get many years of service out of your new workhorse! :)

Great info! The 2.4L with the 5 speed is the model of choice, great find! I do love the 50/50 split AWD system and I find it better in the snow than the 2018 RAV4 that we had. Also the headroom and visibility is amazing in this vehicle. Thanks again for this great information and taking the time to post it here. 👍🍻

Its a one owner from new car with only 60k miles on the clock, i drove over 600 miles to pick up the car after looking at some sorry examples close by to where i live. The drive home was fantastic, super comfortable, lots of power for a little car and such a nice place to be sat in the drivers seat. It ticks every box in my book for a family car, the only negative being i only got 29mpg max on the motoway driving in a straight line for hours 😂, i opted for toyota reliability over fuel efficiency, these little cars are an absolute gem, an this example i bought is in immaculate condition and garaged all of its life the headlights, rear lights and paint are like brand new, the underside with only very minor light rust on suspension components which is unherd of. It was an xmas gift for my partner she loves it but not as much as me! 😅.

Got my sisters three door manual 2003 petrol Rav4 with 80,000 miles from the uk seven years ago, she still wants it back 😂🤣
The French garage giving it the two yearly safety check was shocked at the rust because they never see rusty cars on their cars, NO SALT unlike the uk.
It hasn’t worsened being in France and I’ve sprayed all kinds of everything on everything and in all orifices in the hope of slowing its demise, so far so good.
Great to work on I’ve changed all fluids, ( very important if you want to keep a car ), particularly the transfer boxes and differential, ( don’t trust garages after years of experience ), and learned great detail from TH-cam vids. Let the serpentine belt go 10,000 over the recommended change, AND I HAD ONE READY TO FIT 🙄, the only time the car has let me down, don’t do it, but even the replacement only took a garage minutes charging 17 euros labour ? 🤗
Very important to watch the tyres have the same wear on a permanent AWD like this to protect the transfer boxes. One gripe, the American models rear doors open wider than mine ??? Otherwise this car should last longer than me 🤗. Would not swop it for any Rav4 past 2005, heard of too many problems the newer they are 🙄

Great review with fabulous scenery! In 2001 Seattle I had bought a brand new 2001 special 5 speed stick with sun roof and shipped it over to Island of Hawai’i. But a few years later I had to sell it due to some financial issues. I missed it so much a couple years later I was able to find a 2002 base 5 speed stick and SO LOVE it! (really miss the sun roof tho) … Island of Hawai’i is extremely tough on cars due to sea salt and some roads not in great condition … but no rust except a but starting under the hood. In places it’s starting to need a paint job as it’s always been out in the baking sun. I love it so much that want to take extra good care of it and when I get the money will do a huge upgrade with paint and take care of any rust just starting. It only has 141 K miles and I use Costco original tires intended for this RAV4 … however am thinking about getting slightly larger tires next time … IMO this car is an extremely valuable CLASSIC! Have fun with yours … but it hurts when you say that you are going to use it as beater :(((

Here in UK, I bought my almost identical car (same spec but sadly no cruise). One previous owner, the car lived in London in a dry space (no rot). I bought her 3 August 2021 and can depend on this car like no other car I’ve ever owned. Including 9 BMW (an 1990 E30 325iSE and two E46). Just 55,00 miles when I got her, now on about 67,000. The car drives and feels like new. I only discovered a few months ago on a car vertical check (only did goo check at time of cash purchase)…. She might have been given “a mileage haircut” of about 19,400 miles. In any case she is on a maximum 90,00 miles now with FSH, most of mine at Toyota dealership.
The gearbox feels as though it’s honed from granite. The steering feels lovely and mechanical. Some of the roads here in UK are terrible surfaces and even cause accidents (thankfully relatively rare) due to people swerving to avoid potholes like craters. When this car sees potholes she is like a little child excitedly jumping into puddles in their bright yellow, brand new wellies - just for the fun of it. They said back in the day that Japanese cars were ‘bland’. No. This car is sharp suited with Lexus IS200ish headlight styling. Every one and crease looks perfect.
My 2002 RAV4 2.0VVTi 5 speed has only felt like she’s properly running in today following its 70,000 mile service (done according to time). This car even gives me the 32mpg combined figure specified by the manufacturer. Twenty two years ago!!
What more can I say. I trusted this car when living two hundred miles away and my elderly father (who passed 6 months ago) had suffered a catastrophic stroke.
It never entered my head for a fraction of a second that this car might let me down. Because I KNEW it simply wouldn’t.
I’d decided to maybe now sell and get something more economical. Stuff that! And 32mpg is AWESOME for this type of car,-man’s being a permanent 4x4. . She is even ULEZ compliant, if I ever drive into London. Over here a same age Mazda 6 2.0 petrol - with only front wheel drive and surely better aerodynamics - can’t hit more than 28mpg combined sycle when I last looked! I mean…. Come on!!!!!😂
The Mk2 RAV4 has to be becoming a modern day classic. Like the Mk2 Golf Gti. Only more reliable.❤

@@JimmyMeatwhistle thanks. I think the older Escapes don't get enough recognition. Everybody wants 4 runners and xterras.

The older escapes are the ones that last the longest from what I've read. Friend of mine has one and loves it! I like the look of that generation too.

aww man , in europe everyone knows how to drive a 5 speed , and the 5 th gear , its for highways cruising .i got the vx 2 liter turbo with intercooler . after a few issues with brake calipers and airflow sensors , this thing is a weapon now , just love my rav4s , heavy on the gas but just a fantastic wee car .

Thanks for the comment. The turbo sounds like fun! Heavy on gas? Compared to my 7.5 litre Ford F-250, that rav's fuel efficiency was amazing haha 👍

Hello Dude. Great to see the RAV4 Gen2 in the Rocky´s 🙂. I life in Germany and my 3 Door RAV4 Gen2 is still running great! 300.000km (186.000mi) with NO Problems or Issues! Only the Generator was gone to Heaven at 270.000km. I drive this Car as Daily every Day to Work and back (60mi). Hopefully it runs the next 186.000 miles like the first. The quality is amazing- i´m a Testdriver for Mercedes- don´t mess a new MB with an old Toyota.... 1:0 Japan 🙂I have the 2 liter Diesel Engine (D4D) Motorcode 1CD-FTV.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle Great! No joke: yesterday i´ve buyed a Tacoma 3,4 liters V6, build 2001from US with 90000mi (ok, for German Numberplates i have to do and change something (headlights, fog light and so on). But it´s a real Japanese/US Pickup you can´t get in Germany...."Tacoma" is in Germany a "Hilux".....never ever the same Truck! Tacoma "oldschool" is a realy "man´s toy". I´ve paid only 5000 bucks.....ok, till it get´s German numberplates....7000 bucks- but almost very cheap and i know: the RAV4 Gen 2 and the Tacoma will bring a smile to my face until I can't drive anymore ;-) The Tacoma is meant for the forest to chop wood for the winter....and charge four e-bikes in the summer and have fun! Sorry, for my rusty german english!

Hi! That is a great truck. I love the old school toyota's! The 3.4l v six is an awesome engine! Same engine in my ninety seven 4Runner 👍. My 4Runner does not burn or leak any oil or any fluid. You have great english, and thank you for the comment . Have fun with your new toy 🍺👌👍

I got the late 2004 with electric buttons for the climate controll. Mine is automatic, i love that thing. Only problem i had is that the gas pipe was badly rusted. Its a plastic cover in the back wheel house, and it was filled whit dirt and mud so no wounder. Only flaw doh. Drives and shifts like a dream. I just passed 26000 km. Regards frim Sweden

It's funny you mentioned that gas thing because we recently noticed a bit of fuel smell. Hmmm. Thanks for the awesome comment and totally agree with you, these things are awesome. Like most Toyota's😁

I bought a similar Rav(2001) in august last year, and i'm absolutely in love with it. (i live in Europe). I have other Toyota's, but this one is so much fun to drive. There is a LSD for this model, if you wish to improve its off road capabilities. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the comment and info. Such a great little utility vehicle, I am really loving it. No LSD on this one I believe this is the base model
