Being someone with a psych degree I am definitely against close friends of the opposite sex. Associates sure. I love this topic because my experience has told me that there is no such thing as as platonic friends between men and women. It’s always good to air on the side of caution. If you’re in a committed relationship it definitely won’t hurt you to avoid having an opposite sex best friend. It avoids all the complexities and issues they mentioned. Lol you won’t die from not having an opposite sex best friend. I never heard of this rule hurting a relationship so keep that in mind lol. Better to be safe than sorry. Of course there can be exceptions like a childhood best friend or a best friend who you’ve been friends with before you started dating your significant other and if they really respect you and your relationship they will have boundaries with you.

First of all, I love ya'll and that's on Joe Goldberg from You. PERIODT. (Sorry for the book, but bare with me)... Initially, I thought it was not possible to be *just* friends with a male. I thought there would always be something or at some point, the person would try to flirt and things would get awkward... But after me being so adamant about it not being able to happen, it's so ironic now that one of my closest friends is a guy. We've been pals for about 6yrs now. I feel like there is a level of respect and understanding that needs to be reached in a male and female friendship if you want it to work - especially if the other person is in a relationship. He has a gf who I know and respect, and I see her as an extension of him. He's become my brother and we can be in each other's company joking and laughing while also knowing how to balance being serious, when necessary. Another thing I feel helps, is if you find *one thing* about them that you find unattractive. For me, he's way too short and being that I'm 6'0" - ain't no way. But again, everyone has things that work and don't work for them. I just know that if I were in a relationship and my bf assumed that my guy friend had other intentions with me, I would be upset and think my bf was insecure. Certain things definitely need to be discussed before getting into a serious relationship with someone.

It’s always good to air on the side of caution. If you’re in a committed relationship it definitely won’t hurt you to avoid having an opposite sex best friend. It avoids all the complexities and issues they mentioned. Lol you won’t die from not having an opposite sex best friend. I never heard of this rule hurting a relationship so keep that in mind lol. Better to be safe than sorry. Of course there can be exceptions like a childhood best friend or a best friend who you’ve been friends with before you started dating your significant other and if they really respect you and your relationship they will have boundaries with you.

ok so i think it depends like what y'all said. i should have been smarter in my last relationship. my ex and my "friend" were in the same homeroom and they started talking quite often. she talked to him more than me. i trusted him so i brushed it off🙄. they ended up liking eachother and i should have known better bc i had gotten with him the same way. we were in the same class last year, became friends, then bestfriends, then bf and gf. at least ik what to do in my next relationship...
Had a guy best friend all throughout high school and we were friends for like 5 years. We were super close but I made sure that whenever he got into relationships I would take a step back out of respect for his girlfriends. I also found out that he ended liking me sometime during that friendship and that changed things too between. Now that I’m older, I definitely don’t think I’d be ok with my boyfriend having a girl best friend. Friends yes, but definitely not a best friend.

Initially, I thought it was not possible to be *just* friends with a male. I thought there would always be something or at some point, the person would try to flirt and things would get awkward... But after me being so adamant about it not being able to happen, it's so ironic now that one of my closest friends is a guy. We've been pals for about 6yrs now. I feel like there is a level of respect and understanding that needs to be reached in a male and female friendship if you want it to work - especially if the other person is in a relationship. He has a gf who I know and respect, and I see her as an extension of him. He's become my brother and we can be in each other's company joking and laughing while also knowing how to balance being serious, when necessary. Another thing I feel helps, is if you find *one thing* about them that you find unattractive. For me, he's way too short and being that I'm 6'0" - ain't no way. But again, everyone has things that work and don't work for them. I just know that if I were in a relationship and my bf assumed that my guy friend had other intentions with me, I would be upset and think my bf was insecure. Certain things definitely need to be discussed before getting into a serious relationship with someone.

From elementary experience alone I've had "guy friends" and being the tomboy I was, I fit right in. And I am guilty of proposing a friendship with guys I like as well as ending up liking guys I thought I was being straight platonic with. So I can resonate with you guys point of view.
I’ve always had guy friends. I just never get along with girls. My bf doesn’t mind at all because he TRUSTS me. It’s all about trust. If you do something sus with your guy friends that’s when your man is going to get jealous.
Fr like you can have opposite sex friends without being more. I also think it has to do with respect. All parties have to respect each relationship and if not that's when it came become a problem.
Funny because that's how i'm with my bf today. Me and my ex weren't doing well. Vented to my current bf abut everything. Then a few months later we started talking and got together. He's has a childhood female best friend who I'm cool with. But if any other girls comes around, come around I'm pretty cautious. And it's nice that he understands that because those situations can be pretty complicated.
