Bob said he thought that lyric was very clunky and wanted to change it, and the rest of the band just looked at him with dropped jaws, and said, "Uh, no, Bob, you can NOT change that!"

One of the best-written songs of all time. Anyone who has had some struggles, done some drifting, messed up a good thing with a good woman- or just had a wild one we couldn’t hold onto- and those of us who have made some bad choices will attest to how well this song is written.

I remember when I was 14, back in Madrid, Spain (my hometown), and the English teacher played this song for us. We used the lyrics to learn English. I learnt life. I cried silently in the back of the class then; and tears still come to my eyes every time I hear it. What a songwriting and storytelling!

Music is the language of the soul, it has no boundaries, it doesn't understand frontiers. In a sense, it's like a good virus. One that I don't want a treatment for or a vaccine to prevent it.

Minutes after the birth of my first son I was with him when they took him to get washed and cleaned off. I was at a little nurses station when they handed him too me, it had been a long and difficult day for him and his mom. As I sat there holding my little man this song comes playing out the little boom box. I asked the nurse to turn it up a little and at 3am this is the first song my boy ever heard. I’m not perfect now, but I was far from it back then. I’ll never forget that few minutes as long as I live. Trying to have fair and following winds now and days.

"Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then."
Seger wrestled with and stressed over that lyric. He asked a friend if it was any good, and whether or not it belonged in the song. He thought it was bad grammar.
However, his friend said, "Who cares? It's the best line in the song!" So Bob kept it.

    • @janestage6498
      @janestage6498 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Indeed, my friend. So many things learned over 63 years that I wish I never had to know: the man I loved and later married turned out to be a major disappointment, beloved friends and family lost to time, distance and death, loss of a sense of freedom to obligations and responsibilities, the end of innocence, rapidly approaching sunset of life and so many more.

People who wonder why we boomers are so, so disappointed with the last few decades of this current musical wasteland have never spent the time to really listen to the music from our youth. Thank you for listening and reacting to this. It truly was a golden time for music.
The best part of it was, songs like these weren't something that happened once or twice a year the way it is now. This type of song; the incredible musical arrangements, the storytelling, the poetry inherent in the lyrics, the truth at the core - that was the standard. Every week there would be a song just as good, just as profound and heartfelt as this one. God, I miss it.

Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Beatles, The Who, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Simon and Garfunkel, Santana, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, too many more to name. All of them musical icons, with lyrics that rolled off the tongue like fine wines and music that cut straight to the heart They spoke the truth of the times. They all filled stadiums and fields as far as the eye could see. Simon and Garfunkel's final concert drew a crowd estimated at 500,000 people. Two people, one guitar, holding half a million people in the palm of their hands as they performed one hit song after another for over two hours. The Beatles on-line performance of 'Let It Be' was listened to by one and a half billion people all over the world. I doubt we'll ever see a time like that again. Sorry you missed it.

Probably one of Seger’s most poignant songs. Co written by the late great Glen Frey...who you can hear in the chorus refrain.

      No, Michael Carpenter,
      that is totally incorrect.
Bob Seger wrote "Against the Wind"
by himself ..... Glenn Frey does sing
      harmony vocals on the record,
but he had nothing to do with
      writing it whatsoever.

Seger "retired" not too long ago (2018) but you never know...
He actually lives not that far from me (I'm in Oakland County, MI) and it's only a 10-15 minute drive to the City/Village he lives in these days.
Bob has tons of hits - and if you've EVER heard a Chevy commercial between 1980-2010...then you've heard Bob before. One of his most well-known songs is used in their commercials.
    Some songs to consider:
    Shame on the Moon
    Shakedown
    Main Street
    Like A Rock
    Old Time Rock and Roll
    Turn The Page
    Katmandu

The. first concert I attended, the Against the Wind tour '77. Some standouts for me were Alto Reed's sax on Turn the Page, the huge disco ball used during We Got Tonight, and of course, Against the Wind. My then 14 year old self was blown away and made a lifelong fan!

The line, " I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger didn't want in the song. He felt it was out of place. But the band insisted on it. Turned out to be the key line of the song and probably the one most quoted of his catalogue.
