When I was 25 yrs old in 1977 I had to learn to paint by using books available at that time. The paints available were lacquer and enamel. I did a total of 3 cars learning as I went along. I found out the hard way about putting lacquer over enamel without sealing the previous paint or removing it all the way to bare metal. This will come up in your work when you are doing work on cars from the era before the use of clear coats over color. I am not an auto body man now or then either. I just bought cars that were needing bodywork and got them cheap to sell them later. I have seen a lot of auto body videos lately and I have not heard anyone say to put more clear on the front of a car so to be able to buff them out in the future without getting into the color. This makes a difference because if you are going to drive it you will be getting scratched and bugs and chipped areas to fix. If you have a very thin clear coat on the car you will be digging into the color a lot of the time making it a bigger problem than a scratch in the clear coat. Please excuse me if I got any of the words wrong relating to the old type of paints
I, also painted a few cars in the 70s and it was lacquer and enamel. I'm going to jump back in with the new stuff like base and clear coats. I got my glossy shine back in those days with a lot of wet sanding, polishing and buffing.
you are an EXCELLENT TEACHER of auto body and painting!!! just joined your community. I have been teaching as a certified master mechanic for gas and diesel students for over 20 yrs. I am just learning auto body work now. You have helped me tremendously with this new skill. now I can paint and do bodywork as a green horn. lol. thank you for all you give back to others as I have tried to do the same with mechanics. Great job once again !!!!!
Hey Bobby, I thank you for the awesome feedback. You should start sharing your skill and knowledge on diesel repair here on TH-cam, I'm sure many would love that. I have another program that teaches how to make money by sharing your knowledge on here on TH-cam. Let me know if interested. Please keep me posted with all of your success my friend!
I’m doing a paint job on my car. Nobody else works on that car, I do everything on it from engine rebuilding to now paint work. I really enjoyed this video, it addressed a lot of my questions and I appreciate that you don’t ignore the teachable moments when you make mistakes. I’ll be looking for your videos first from here on out when I have auto body questions. Keep up the good work.
I've been doing body work for 25+ years. After watching some of your videos I must say you are skilled sir. Good job helping people wanting to get started.
I stopped watching other auto body videos and I'll only watch yours. You explain everything and don't skip steps in the video. Your work is awesome. Thanks Jeff
Tony, I'm a LABAP VIP member (awesome value by the way,) and I just want to say - the most valuable thing I get from your instruction & videos is the drive & desire to keep working the project; thanks man. To everyone out there with something in the garage, never give up!
I like that you do things realistically. I learned stuff from the one where the guy takes 750 hours to sand a Corvair door, but I'll never spend that much time with a 48" sanding block of 27000 grit sandpaper while standing in a kiddie pool. I like that you rarely get below 400 and use machines for your initial sanding. It gives me hope that I can get this project done.
of course you can get that project done!! Check out VIP and see how it can help you with your car projects! www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/vip-offer/ with over 100 hours of training videos, e-read and bonuses! Definitely one of the most comprehensive courses in auto body work and paint!
I came across your videos while trying to research what possibilities are out there for a pretty bad paint job on a Mustang GT I was hoping to buy. (Trim/door handles all painted, nobody taped anything off, orange peel, dry spray, runs etc) Other than redoing the entire thing, there is no way out of it. (and for the price they're asking, it is totally not worth it! Unfortunately.) So, now, I spent the past few hours digging around your TH-cam channel and learning how to do some fancy stuff lol. My husband is very impressed with your videos (not that that means anything but, lol, he is a perfectionist and is irate about this GT and thinks you do flawless work!) I'm a new subscriber! I am a girl, yes, but, this is all so fascinating to me and I think it's great how you make this all seem so easy and are so enthusiastic and positive for newbies!
I don't really know anything about autobody and will probably never paint a car myself, but I like the effort you put in your videos and your honesty especially when it comes to mistakes makes me believe you really know your stuff. Keep teaching the public!
I appreciate you showing your mistakes too . Helps me learn . I have a tendency to learn the hard way and I appreciate your honesty, it’s still art to me Tony . I am ENJOYING VIP AND LEARNING TONS . ☺️❤️
I have to admit that I totally enjoy watching your video's! You're so easy to follow and to listen to as well. You take the time to break everything down and explain so many things to us watchers. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!!! I have never painted a car, but I have painted many walls and furniture items, just for myself....but after watching your video's, I swear...if I had the space and the equipment, I think I could do this!!! :)

My car is currently being sprayed at a auto shop and I wanted to know what would be involved and so your video helped me to become more aware of what to expect and even an idea of the cost based on mixtures and other materials. Great vid. Planning on doing some repairs to damaged trunk on my Cherokee and was thinking about doing the body work and prep myself and having a shop do the paint, but watching this vid gives me the confidence to think I'll give it a go myself. Best case, I learn from guys like you, do a great job and save a bunch of money and get to have pride in a job well done.

Yo Boss Painter, You are the man. Its Okay to make mistakes. Its how you know how to fix the mstake. Making mistakes makes you a better Painter or Installer. I was trained by various Floor Covering Journeymans. The Best Journeymans that I learned from made Mistakes in thier Career. And thats what made them "Top Journeymans". I thank those guys in my career. As a Journeyman myself now. I continue to use my methods that I use now from what I learned from those guys that already made mistakes (I still make mistakes or forget a step every now and then). But I know what to do and how to fix it. Overall, you are a humble dude. When I am ready. I may purchase your Training to Paint like a Pro.... Peace out...Jeff L.
Thank you BOSS! Thank you for the comment. I hope many people read it as it's very true. I say something along those lines all of the time. :) Keep cranking my man!
Great video, Thanks! I'll tell you the worst, trying to blend silver metallic after replacing the hood and fender with paint that the paint shop wasn't even close on the color match.
Great job. I've been watching videos . This was the best I've have seen. I have been looking into to fix clear coating on the roof of my car (BMW) . The more i watch, the more i would like to learn how to paint cars.
I had to redo the quarter panel on my car, and all my guy friends kept offering to do it, as they didn't think a girl would do a good job. Thanks to your videos, I proved them wrong! XD
These are the videos that I enjoy the most bro. Only if you could do a different car and paint color once a month , you would get more views and new subscribers. I have followed your vids for 2 years now and you have helped me alot with ur tips Toni. Keep it up bro👍 and thanks.
Heck yeah I feel you on the being busy. It takes time to do a whole car and then work and family needs to be cared for. Lol can't wait to c ur next project. Take care bro.
Thank you bud. Yes I was thinking of it a few years back and actually put together an offer, it was hard getting the guys to come out on certain dates so I scrapped it. Maybe in the future. :)

This is awesome man! In June I am starting the auto tech program at a local Technical College, following up that program I was strongly considering welding or Auto Body. Throughout the duration of my courses I've acquired a 1986 AE86 Corolla to use as a learning tool.
My future may include a Jaguar XJ8 that needs painting. You've got some good info and I want to follow your videos. I would want to prep and paint this car myself.
you forgot to use the guide coat on primer before it drys and after you sand it down and use another coat of powder guide coat to make it a lot more easier for you to sand and to know if you missed any spot to sand it down
Rails Life it's not about an experienced painter or preper it's just to make it easier for people who's watching or for beginners who's learning that's all
Rails Life by the way you were saying that an experienced painter or preper doesn't need to use a guide coat to refinish there job ...!!! How long do they take to actually finish there job without using the guide coat like u said
So far based off of this video I like what you're talking about and hopefully you allow me to be part of your VIP because I'm trying to do auto body just as a DIY at home for my own stuff
man, i'm just speechless what you doing here. so amazing. i think you said you have people teaching this in canada? care to let me know where? i'm getting into car detailing, been doing it for 5 months now and love it. like to learn this skill as i'm getting to understand compounding and polishing also.
Great Instructional Video, I am not new to auto repair, I was an auto Mech. for 18 years, but I have never painted a car, I am in the middle of restoring a 66 Chevelle and now due to the current economical environment I have decided to paint the car myself and one of my biggest worries was turning my shop into the color that I will be applying to the car but you have shown that will not be the case and you have given me that much more confidence to do this myself, the car is down to bare metal so now my next step will be to start applying filler where it needs, +I will then move onto after all the filler is smoothed out to applying a coat of epoxy primer is this a good idea for the next step? I have to you are very good,
You should water down your floor if you arent going to use a paint booth. I think it helps keep dust particles from floating up and getting on your paint.
Tony, Thanks for this video. I am trying to convince my wife to let me paint her ads truck. I think I may be able to with your videos and lessons. You make it look super easy. Awesome Video and learning lessons
So I do believe you are the most educational and elementary tutorial I've seen this fair. So my brain was seriously injured and I can no longer work. With the settlement money I want to build a paint booth. Any suggestions on tools and machinery to make my new hobby work well.?
Fog the hood on the last base coat to spread the metal flake uniformly and to avoid tiger stripes. Also on the last clear coat on the hood start from the edge to center and center to other edge so that there is less dried out clear. Also when covering primer areas, do a small batch of concentrated base coat 70/30 to cover up the primer areas faster, saves time and material. I would like to learn how to spray a perfect paint job ( no orange peel, no specs of dirt/base/clear, no runs, etc) that requires no buffing. Do you buff your paint jobs? If so why?
Very enjoyable watching this. I'm just trying to get better at painting my wheels and stumbled on to your channel. I started with plastidip, moved on to spray paint cans, now i want to get a low budget compressor lol. I'm subscribing too.
Hello Tony my bumper was painted 2 weeks ago can I buy a can of clear coat and throw it on top of the new clear or do I have to sand it with 1000 and then add new clear.
i removed the sticky non cured bondo, and remix some more bondo and applied to my project. the project came out still came out good. mistakes are the best knowledge.
I always use at least a 60-gallon to paint a full car. I'm a visual learner, so this works great for me. Thanks!
My future may include a Jaguar XJ8 that needs painting. You've got some good info and I want to follow your videos. I would want to prep and paint this car myself.
you forgot to use the guide coat on primer before it drys and after you sand it down and use another coat of powder guide coat to make it a lot more easier for you to sand and to know if you missed any spot to sand it down
Atrenesho Esho sigh. An experienced auto body painter doesn’t need the assistance of a guide coat.

Powders and pearl are in the intercoat so you still put on 2 coats of clear over so you should be able to color sand
You should check out the NEW ATOM X spray guns that we just reviewed! Awesome! th-cam.com/video/7NYI__D2Q8Q/w-d-xo.html
Good master of paint, awesome job.
I have to you are very good,
Thank you for the amazing informative videos. Well done! God Bless
If so why?
I think every kid should learn body work and auto mechanics... Good vid!

Awesome! Thanks and good luck!
I want to learn more, just the basic on what to do from start to finish, fixing dents and all that good stuff.

That is true...we are all constantly improving bro!
