The Renault Megane has long been one of British motoring's staples, sold alongside big sellers like the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 308 and Volkswagen Golf yet it's a vehicle that, over the course of its development, has varied greatly from generation to generation. The car we're looking at here is, if anything, Renault's return to a modicum of conservatism after the styling riot that was the bubble-butted Mk II that ran from 2002-2008. Used examples are plentiful and there's plenty of choice as far as engines and trim are concerned.
The Renault Megane grew up in third generation guise. Yes, it lost a little of its personality in the process but it's undoubtedly a better car for most people than its predecessor. The engines are all solid and while the diesels may not be the most characterful, it's hard to argue with the running costs. I'd be tempted by a 1.9 dCi 130 powerplant if choosing a diesel or a 1.4TCe if I was set on a petrol Megane. As long as you're prepared to put in the legwork and have a look at a few cars, you should end up with a bargain.

ha ha all these negative comments, I love my abused unserviced one, it's about to have lasted me longer than my 2001 Clio that lasted 8 years before being killed by vandals even though it was still running perfectly. now Shitroens are a very different story.

Probably the best Megane ever made. The design aged gracefully, the chassis was one of the most fun in the C segment and the RS 265 was just madly good

You don’t get the Multi link suspension on the latest focus or golf unless you buy the high horse powered models now

I tend to take notice when this reviewer recommends something because he is truthful, expert, balanced and eschews gimmicky traits.
Seeing the Renault name made me curious because of a bad reputation over nearly two decades but one has to be ready to gather facts.
Because I am now seriously old I recall when the Renault 5 suddenly pinched the mini + market from we Brits by making a whole design cohesion in a single model. We had the actual Mini + Clubman and the Austin A40 was actually the first proper hatchback, left to dwindle in the Leyland wars. The Austin/Morris 1100s lacked cohesion of thought and, although Renault was still making the Renault 4 and 12 (excellent and versatile) the Renault 5 had the look of a classic at birth in the same way as the Nissan Micra K11 style early models.
My R5 had the umbrella handle gear change (so direct and involving) and I could forgive silencer rot because of its silly location -- to give the R5 a flat underside -- because replacement was cheap and anodized ones were available as kits.
The sparse but stylish instrument layout was less outré than the R4, R12 and underrated Citroen Ami Super estate and the actual hatch door and curve-away plastic rear bumper made grocery loading simple and clean. Only 3 doors did not matter because, as with the later Peugeot 205 (a better car for distance driving), the French long door tradition and beefy hinges made life easy for passengers and babies in Isofix type chairs. Doors also had reflectors and Volvo-like girders. Outsize, strong locks added to structural safety, as did strongly designed roof steel. VW lacked that and so did the R4.
When Renault later became bland and faced its Nissan scandals I disliked them until the Clio proved to be good after many early mistakes, especially blown engines and sticking brakes but the overall design has improved a lot and morphed into informing the Megane into being a better all round medium sized car. Renault improved as VW, Peugeot/Citroen, FIAT and the now extinct Talbot became shoddy.
It has been a slow process but the original soundness of a design tends to win through and now that Renault has looked to eastern and east central Europe for engine reliability standards and pleasant avoidance of bling and toys I would say that this review is fair and tipped us the wink to keep an eye out for Renaults of the era under discussion.

To be fair to the French the roads are so much better than they are in the UK it probably had less of a chance of RnD, much like the social care, crime rate, corruption and health care.
