That's what I do when I don't know what to do. I grew up with that stuff, it's pretty much my blue print of how an e-guitar should sound like. Even when I try to not fall back to Metallica and other 90s influences, it's always there.

Regarding the key I always thought they use C major/A minor scale and the key of E phrygian since they start on the E.
