  • This week we're drilling more holes. What other mysteries might be hidden within Mahalo's depths, rotten plywood? We can't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet, but we will keep fighting the rot and osmosis and bring Mahalo back to life!

    Was going to save a boat with similar issues but the owner was too late making the decision to let me have her before winter came and absolutely destroyed any chance of her being saved 😢 it was such a beautiful boat. It hurts to know I could have saved her. Winter came and froze the water that was in the keel and sadly also the water inside the boat due to neglect which completely destroyed the hull by cracking and busting both the keel and hull to the point the poor boat collapsed on herself from all the structural damage. It’s sad and it pains me to think about what a beautiful woody she could have been at 40 foot and built in the early 1900s I was in love. 😔 owning a small sawmill service I was completely dedicated to fixing such a rare beauty before the owners led her to waste.

    Cool video. I have some questions. Sorry for my ignorance on these points but you mention “pipes” in the hull. Or maybe I’m not hearing it correctly? What is that. Also, is this a wooden hull or fiberglass? I’m asking because I have an old boat with fiberglass hull. But you’re making me nervous about old boats. Haha. Good video, music, and editing work.

    • @SailingMahalo
      @SailingMahalo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mahalo is a rare specimen... the boat was constructed with a system called RFK in Germany. It translates to pipe fiber composite. Instead of foam or wood as a core, Mahalo has flat pipes that run horizontally throughout the hull. It was a very short lived system, but there are still boats around that held up fairly well. There are many good old boats out there, you just need to find them. I don’t recommend RFK.

      @@SailingMahalo Ah cool. Thanks for the info. I was wondering if I’d gone crazy or was hearing you wrong. I have a 1965 Cheoy Lee 36. It was one of the first years they did fiberglass hulls but topside is all teak wood (wood cabin top, toe rails, deck, etc.). I’ve never had the boat out of the water but I dive below frequently and the hull seems solid. It just got me nervous with all the bottom issues you’re having. 👍⛵️I haven’t done any videos yet of the Cheoy Lee as I’m way behind on editing but hope to soon.

      @@JoshPostVlogs Go for it! We need to catch up as well, but the pandemic hasn’t exactly been helpful. Is that a solid hull boat like many of the early ones? In that case you should be golden.

    I am really sad to see just how bad the osmosis problem is on your boat. It is going to take a lot time money & patience to get it back to where it should be. She is going to be a nightmare to re-glass while the hull is up the right way. I re-glassed a 26ft OAL Outlaw hull completely in the 80's. I was wishing I had never started it within a week. In the end I had it craned upside down to complete it. Luckily I was working at the boat yard where I was doing the job. I did it part time probably 25 hours per week and it took me 2 years to complete the hull. We did not have peel ply in those days and every layer had to be sanded before the application of the next coat. She is still sailing to this day but not owned by me. I hope you are as stubborn as I was then and refused to give up. It is a massive undertaking and I wish you all the best for a good conclusion. regards from the UK

    I bought a 50ft boat once ( with business)
    I had little knowledge of large sailing boats,
    So I got taken to the cleaner's
    After about six months the boat began to fall to pieces, also we found that the business was a dodgy setup,as the previous owner had been paying the harbour master a monthly wage to keep his mouth shut. The business was registered in KL with a chartered accountant
    Anyway as they say a little knowledge is dangerous it cost me £60000 plus additional
    Costs of £ 30k.. the name of the company was
    Dynamite cruises in Langkawi the name of the
    Person I bought the company from was Ivan
    Just like to say that this has nothing to do with
    Dynamite cruises travel agency Langkawi
    Who took over the name ,,Good company and owner.
    To finish with the hull was rotten the engine was
    Finished, I did not get a professional to servey it.
    My fault, but the dishonesty of some people is astounding. But I believe in karma, so let's see
    What happens.

    So someone started building it 40 years ago, and it started falling apart 20 years ago. And it never got to be sailed! One part was being completed while another was falling apart. Which is both very sad and I gotta say a little pathetic. Note to self: Be very very, very, careful buying an old boat. And even more careful about who you get to survey it! My heart goes out to you guys... hang in there and you’ll start going forward soon I’m sure.

    I would look into having a Rudder housing made out of steel then you could over drill a hole a little bit and put in a brass bushing that would be easy to replace if it wears , then fiberglass it all in place really well that should last you a while

    • @SailingMahalo
      @SailingMahalo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryon Ensminger great suggestion! We have a design in mind already, but we hadn’t thought about a brass bushing. Since we already have a stainless sleeve we are planning to weld or bolt this to the housing.

    Sorry to say that hull is shot despite what you see, hear and talk to people about it they are all wrong. It will never be as strong as was when new. It is common problem with poorly made boats with wooden frames and foam hulls once wet it will always be wet drilling holes to let the water out is a waste of time .When you get done it will look good on the surface only. but in a rough sea it will fall apart. That thing belongs in the dump. Sorry for a touch of reality BUT I have seen people lile you do this before and it is a disaster in the end.

    • @philipstreechon4523
      @philipstreechon4523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for being so negative , Ijust get so unnerved a the boat manufactures they cut corrners were ever possible it makes me sick. You should see how new boats are made today even worse. there some videos of boat surveyors in Florida looking at storm damaged boats, and you can see what they have for a hull core. The surveyor did not know what was it was like old wet bondo very poor. That is why they are so cheep I looked at a 65 foot hatters and the foam core was full of water which froze last and all full of big bulges. Look at Boston Whaler the core can honl so much water it can increase the boat weight by as much as 35%. The rule is weigh the boat and compare it to the mfg specs. Good luck on your project Icould go no for hours.

    • @SailingMahalo
      @SailingMahalo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely get where you’re coming from. It’s frustrating indeed to just see people wanting to make a quick buck. We can see more and more that quality doesn’t matter anymore. Just make as many and sell as many as possible. In our case the boat was home built, but I believe mislead by the design company...
