Is our boat dry? - Osmosis Repair Nightmare | Sailing Mahalo Episode 11
So, after a winter of being exposed to the air, and drying out the osmosis, has Mahalo's hull dried enough to start patching it back up? Chris goes over the boat and measures the moisture between the layers of fiberglass with a moisture meter. Meanwhile we try to stay busy during the COVID-19 lockdown in Canada.

    Let me ad the following to his explanation. The blister does not just form in random locations, and for no good reason. The blister forms initially because there was a void in the gelcoat and/or fiberglass resin/glass. That void, even a microscopic void, fills with salt water through osmotic pressure. Which inturn starts a chemical reaction within the fiberglass resin. The reason that the entire hull below the waterline does not form one giant blister is because the entire hull is not totally filled with voids. The blister will only form where a void once existed. My point is this. If the manufacturer of the hull would have invested in better equipment, and they would have properly trained their layup crew, and they would have used vinyl ester resin instead of polyester resin, there would be far fewer blisters in hulls. But profit comes before anything else. So you end up with a bunch of blisters as a result.

    You can use a concrete grinder to remove the antifouling without damaging the gelcoat underneath it, I use Festool RG 80 with the SZ-RG 80 head on it, 1 pass over with it and its done, just light sanding for any spots you missed or tight curves where you cant get the machine in, you can get it done in about 8-9 hours. It also takes off the antifoul in chunks so it reduces amount of dust. Another advantage is that you wont need to go to the gym because your arms will get a good workout holding the machine all day haha Edit: Saw episode 7, definitely needed to remove all the gel coat wow

    Cool video. I have some questions. Sorry for my ignorance on these points but you mention “pipes” in the hull. Or maybe I’m not hearing it correctly? What is that. Also, is this a wooden hull or fiberglass? I’m asking because I have an old boat with fiberglass hull. But you’re making me nervous about old boats. Haha. Good video, music, and editing work.

    • @SailingMahalo
      @SailingMahalo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mahalo is a rare specimen... the boat was constructed with a system called RFK in Germany. It translates to pipe fiber composite. Instead of foam or wood as a core, Mahalo has flat pipes that run horizontally throughout the hull. It was a very short lived system, but there are still boats around that held up fairly well. There are many good old boats out there, you just need to find them. I don’t recommend RFK.

      @@SailingMahalo Ah cool. Thanks for the info. I was wondering if I’d gone crazy or was hearing you wrong. I have a 1965 Cheoy Lee 36. It was one of the first years they did fiberglass hulls but topside is all teak wood (wood cabin top, toe rails, deck, etc.). I’ve never had the boat out of the water but I dive below frequently and the hull seems solid. It just got me nervous with all the bottom issues you’re having. 👍⛵️I haven’t done any videos yet of the Cheoy Lee as I’m way behind on editing but hope to soon.

    Was going to save a boat with similar issues but the owner was too late making the decision to let me have her before winter came and absolutely destroyed any chance of her being saved 😢 it was such a beautiful boat. It hurts to know I could have saved her. Winter came and froze the water that was in the keel and sadly also the water inside the boat due to neglect which completely destroyed the hull by cracking and busting both the keel and hull to the point the poor boat collapsed on herself from all the structural damage. It’s sad and it pains me to think about what a beautiful woody she could have been at 40 foot and built in the early 1900s I was in love. 😔 owning a small sawmill service I was completely dedicated to fixing such a rare beauty before the owners led her to waste.

    Would be interesting if you ground back the the outside skin to the core in like a 1 foot section. Is your plan to lay up additional glass on the outside when done? What about glassing the keel into the hull so you dont have to worry about more water intrusion. Edited my original statement, missed the video with all the blistering shown.

    Many years ago I found a material called C-Flex which consisted of hollow tubes linked together to form planks which were supposed to make boat building cheaper and easier;It came on the market briefly and disapeared just as quickly.I believe you may have such a boat but cant say for sure with the limited video I've seen thus far.Any chance I could see a bared spot (10" around or so would do) of that layer of your build?

    • @CheersWarren
      @CheersWarren 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dean Farina No , c-flex was just an efficient way to wrap a skin around a temporary frame and then layup the fiberglass hull. Solid or correct and the c-flex became part of the hull . This POS was made from wrapping pipe , I think pvc or fiberglass around the temporary frames then fiberglassing over, but from the quality we can see of the amateur fiberglass work it was full of voids that allowed water to get into the hull laminate , into the pipes that were not continuous and spread total Mayhem. The hull should be condemned. With this amateur build the rest of the structure of the boat must be highly questionable , there may be some nice varnished wood inside but the structure and original design are so questionable it should never go to sea, cheers warren

    • @deanfarina8968
      @deanfarina8968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CheersWarren :Thank you for clarifying that Warren.Do you know anymore about how C-Flex construction fared over time?I thought the rods in C-Flex were solid.Were they some sort of glass or resin glass mixture and what made up the skin its self? This project is intriguing on so many levels.I would love to get involved if my health and age permitted.I'll settle for following along and arm chairing it as long as I'm able lol.Good luck to all the folks involved. Also,I worked a project involving osmosis in which the shipwright(I was a journey man at the time) who headed it used heaters then window air conditioners under a tented bottom to bleed and dry it. We then made a one foot square 'bed of nails' paddle which was laid all over the bottom and whacked good and hard to perforate the glass.We followed this with multiple coats of penetrating epoxy and finished up in the standard barrier fashion.Worked out beautifully I must say.Cheers to you as well.

    • @SailingMahalo
      @SailingMahalo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Warren is right, it’s not C-Flex. It’s a system called RFK (German for pipe and fiberglass composite). The pipes seem to be made of PVC. We do know of at least one other boat that’s still kicking with this construction. Germany’s smallest research vessel, Mercator, is made using this system. Thanks for joining the adventure, Dean!
