    Well, I had to use a drill because my key would not even budge towards the ACC spot. The drill basically broke through the lock, causing it to fall out, and the ignition cylinder slid out. Thanks again for a great, brief video as well as for your response!

    Thanks so much. This video saved me almost $200 and it only took a few minutes for me to take the ignition lock cylinder out and give it to my locksmith. What an easy thing to do! Thanks man! This really helped me a lot. The hardest part, like everyone else, was to get it to ACC. After an hour I took a rest, then came back and stuck the key in and worked like it should. I took it to a local locksmith, and they fixed for $15. The cover was a pain to get off, and more of a pain to get back on.

    My 1999 Toyota Sienna had a seized ignition cylinder and this video was really helpful in showing how to pop it out. Turned out Autozone had one in stock for $140 and I was able to swap it out tonight (so my daughter can drive herself to school in the morning). That was a big help. Thank you so much for posting!

      you can work around the wheel but it is sort of in the way - - the one I just did I left the steering wheel in place and the only things I pulled were the cover as shown in this vid and the light that is held in by the phillips scew. Don't do what I heard one guy try and that's to drill out the tumblers from the key opening - - you will snap drill bits like you read about

    Great video. I purchased a cylinder on eBay and changed it out in 5 minutes. The key definitely should be in the ACC position in order to depress the release button (that's to keep someone from simply replacing the cylinder without a key, i.e., a thief). My 98 Camry has a transponder in the key. I was planning on having two keys on my ring (the old one for the doors and the new one for ignition). At first, I tried to start the vehicle without the old key near the new one (the new key does NOT have a transponder in it), but the vehicle security system wouldn't let it start. Once I figured it out, I simply put the old key on the ring with the new key (thus getting it close enough to the ignition security system) and everything worked fine. :- )) Thanks again for your effort to help others!

      hey Joe I have an 98 camry I got a new key without the transponder and I had the old one and put them together so that it could work but the new key is starting to have the same problem as the old one which was that it would get stuck at the acc and I'd have to keep trying to get it to start. in my case do I have to do anything with the igniter cylinder or can I just replace it and program the new transponder key. I'm stuck on how to deal with this

    Nice video! This allowed me to change the lock cylinder very quickly. My car is a 1998 Toyota Camry XLR and I guess it has a key transponder. When I put in the new cylinder, the car would not start, it would crank but not turn over. It looks like when I did then the immobilizer was preventing the car from starting. With the key in the on position, the security light was just blinking. I tried to search for a work around, but was not able to find one that would allow me to start the car in a timely fashion. Luckily the old cylinder is still partly functional, so I put it back in following the same steps in this video and the car was able to start up with no problems. At this point, I am going to see if I can find a locksmith who can take the transponder key and make it match the new cylinder and hopefully that will work. Just wanted to post here for anyone else who may also have the 98 Toyota Camry XLR version.

    Great video--I had to replace the "unlock key sense switch" which has been causing some very weird electrical issues. But in order to remove the switch I needed to remove the cylinder. Thanks for the video which made this part of the job super easy.
    So far so good on the switch change--there is no longer a clicking relay when I turn the key off.
    For sure the dealer would have charged me more than my car is worth--If this hadn't work I was going to start looking for a new car. So thanks again!

    It seems quite simple, my 2001 Camry has the same panel design. I called the Toyota dealer before I looked up your video and told them the ignition cylinder had to be replaced. When they started saying something like well we have to do a diagnostic test, I'm thinking what's there to do? They never quote you a price. So I decided to go buy the ignition cylinder costs only $41 before the 10% discount for being a Veteran. Gonna see if I can fix it tonight. Thanks.

    My old cylinder won't turn to the ACC position which is the only way to release the spring loaded button. Do you know any tricks before I end up pulling the entire barrel out?
    Update: I kept trying and the old cylinder finally turned. This was the best video I found and had the old cylinder turned to ACC immediately ot would have been done in 10 min. If you have a chip in the old key and buy a replacement cylinder without a transponder key make sure you put your old key on the same ring as the new one. As long as the key is close to the ingnition it will read the chip. Thank you for this video.

    What a great video. The key in ignition warning would not turn off. My Thailand based ignition was different. I was able to grind the pot metal down a bit and it worked like a charm!!! That little white button at the top of the ignition is what I had to modify the ignition for. It was $40 for all 4 locks and if I had to do a little grinding...well worth it. They are top quality locks too!!!

    awesome video. I went to Firestone Auto and the estimate was $400.00 to replace the ignition cylinder.
    I came home and googled and this was the first link in the results. Watched it. Bought a ignition cylinder from Auto Zone for $50.00 and replaced it in 30 min. Although it took 15 min. to bring the old key in ACC.

      It went great! Saved $100 taking it out myself instead of locksmith coming to my vehicle. A key instruction on your video was the tumbler needing to be in the ACC position to expose the spring for release. It was a miracle I got key to finally turn after 10 minutes. Great video, thanks again!

    Thanks for the excellent video.Mine is a 98 V6 camry .Pep boys has 2 types of ignition key cylinder one with transponder key and another with regular key which is much cheaper.If I buy this one without transponder will it work or does the computer system in the car look for a ignition key cylinder with transponder.I am pretty sure my current keys do not have transponder as it was a duplicate made at home depot. Thanks

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s interesting, someone just recently commented/posted having a similar situation. In summary, his 98 Camry had a transponder in the key but he purchased the ignition switch/key without the transponder. The new ignition key wouldn’t start (because the vehicle security) until he put the old key on the ring with the new key (close enough to the ignition security system) getting it to work. Check out the post from, Joe Campau, for more details. Let me know, I’m very interested in how you make out. Thank you, bsam64 for commenting/posting.

      I get your frustration. I have read some people drilled the little clip that you have to push up on in order to release the cylinder but as mentioned in my other comments, I had tried different keys, a newly cut key and moving the key back and forth for a while till my hands hurt. I kept at it and it did eventually (randomly) moved in to the ACC position. Honestly, I don’t think any of those things worked other than sheer determination/persistence. Good luck Vivian. Let me know how it works out.

    I'm about to replace the lock cylinder on my 2000 Solara. It looks the same as the 1998 Camry in the video. I have a transponder key but have found a work-around. I think will work. I have a non-transponder key that will still start the car as long as a transponder key is touching it. The plan is to cut off the transponder head from an old key and tape it to the head of the new, non-transponder key. Should work. And will save a lot of money.

    Great video,
    why some people have done this and the car still do not turn on.
    could it be the ignition switch?
    the reason I ask is becuase I have a 2001 Solara which my mechanic say If I only change the lock cylinder( comes with a key) my car won't turn on and I will need the ignition switch and program the key.

  • @DoItYourSelfers
    @DoItYourSelfers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks RandomStuffFixer for watching. The key needs to be in the ACC position so it can slide out when the spring release button is pushed in. For me, it took over 20 minutes of wiggling the key back and forth, up and down, removing it again and again, spraying WD-40, trying another key and eventually it turned.
    I really believe it was just sheer persistence of wiggling the key back and forth, (a million times) causing it to finally turn. At that point is when I could replace the ignition lock cylinder.
    Otherwise I would have had to drill it out as you did in your video:

    I just replaced mine today and wanted to point out that the lighted ring around the ignition had more than just a light in it on mine. I got the new switch in and tried to start the car before I put that plastic lighted ring back on....it cranked but no start, so I started trying to reset the anti theft system. So, after a bunch of screwing the pooch, I got to noticing that there was more than just a bulb in that black piece, so I put that back on and boo-yah! Hope this comment helps somebody.

    apparently the Toyota keys wear out or the tumbler set fails and suddenly won't turn the ignition to the ACC ( or any where else for that matter ) in which case depending on the model you have there is a pin on the bottom or one on the top that must be removed (destroyed ) in order for the tumbler set to pull out. The reason for turning the key to the ACC position is there is a recess that allows you to push it up and let the tumbler set come forward . If you have that pin on the bottom drill it out and use as big a bit as you can fit in the hole as any little edge will impede pulling the tumbler set. The top one I've seen where they use a C-clamp with a piece of hardened round stock or a short screw jammed in the hole to crush the pin and from what I saw you have to remove more of the dash cover pieces for more access - - good luck and I hope this helps someone

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each ignition cylinder comes with their specific(unique) key for that cylinder. It’s basically an anti-theft design. Otherwise, a thief can use their key/cylinder to drive any car away. The frustrating part is it could happen at 100,000, 190,000, 220,00 miles and so on or maybe not at all. Very unpredictable. Mine randomly got stuck and it took me awhile before the ignition cylinder finally moved into the ACC position. (Or I may have had to drill the pin to have the cylinder release.)
      I purchased the ignition cylinder/key at a local auto parts store for around $50.00. Yes, I had 2 keys, but I was fine with it. Let me know how it works out. Thank you ZeroMemphisto for your comments/posting.

      To possibly avoid 2 separate keys, once you remove the ignition cylinder, a lock smith may be able to repair the old cylinder. If repairable, this will avoid the 2 different keys. Hope this helps. Thank you Gary for watching.

    Great video, clear instructions and very helpfull. Just one question, is there absolutely NO WAY the cylinder will slip out WITHOUT being turned to the acc position?

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Saul, the key has to be in the ACC position because it’s an antitheft design (or a thief can use his key and cylinder). This design prevents the pin from moving, which then keeps the cylinder from sliding out. With that said, I know how you feel. After struggling, wiggling the key back and forth a hundred times, using different keys, had a new key made, moving the steering wheel back and forth, using WD40 etc., it finally moved, anyway, the last resort would have been to drill the pin with a (cobalt/titanium type) drill bit. I believe there are some videos out there related specifically to do just that, drilling the pin to have it release. Good luck. Let me know how you make out. Thank you for your commenting/posting.

      Hi enslaved 46, getting the key to turn to the ACC position is the hardest part. I struggled moving the key back and forth, used different keys, a newly cut key, pressing the brake, WD40 (not sure if any of that did anything) for a long while till it randomly moved to the ACC position, otherwise I would have had to drill the pin so the cylinder would release. Good luck enslaved 46, let me know how you make out.

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Unfortunately the key is needed to be able to get to the ACC position to remove the cylinder. It's a little anti-theft device. Otherwise, anyone with any key (or no key) would be able to drive away. I would call a Toyota dealership. If you have the title and VIN, I have heard they may be able to look up your vehicle VIN and can make you a key. Worth a try. Let me know how you make out Johnny.

    I recently had the ignition installed on my 97 corolla. I do not live within 100 miles of where I got the work done so it wouldn't work that well to drive back there to get it checked out. But there has been a problem when I turn my steering wheel to the left and then to the right since I had the ignition changed with new key. When I turn the wheel to the right it will occasionally click as if the steering wheel is trying to lock (and it has locked sometimes when turning the wheel to the right). Any ideas?
