    Before going through any of this or drilling out and removing the ignition try one of your unused keys if you have one. It worked for me.
    I just experienced the same problem the last 2 days; both times away from home. Initially, I thought it was because the steering wheel had locked in an odd way but the 2nd time I was leaving a party and it would not turn so I did a google and bam this is what I got. I finally got the key to turn and hauled ass home. I got home and it happened again. Today, I pulled out one of my other ignition keys that have never been used and compared it to the used key and noticed the used key is badly worn. I used one of the unused keys and bam the truck started. I hope it was just a worn key and not the ignition (so far it's promising). If I have to I will remove and replace the ignition. I will update if things changes. I will keep this video in the vault.

    Wish I found this video before I tried drilling out that peg from the top. Thanks! Hopefully it'll still go back together right but this video is way better than the other one I saw.

    Bro no lie i was desperate my car (99 Toyota Avalon ) key was stuck in ignition in the start position, my battery had died, and i had to quickly unhook the cables so it wouldn't kill my starter plus it was just stuck... I barely even had internet connection at the time so i came here to the library in Pacific Beach SD..... And last hope started searching through videos and magically found ur video.... dude your the greatest to me right now you don't even know a tear in my eye almost. So bottom line is after watching ur video it gave me the courage to take it off and crack that ignition cylinder open... but all i had was a screwdriver, sledge hammer, and a knife... and it wasn't pretty but i was able to get the spring off the back with some small grooming scissors to release the chamber and when it came out it was in pieces... so i put the part that worked (bottom half only) back in the cylinder but without the top on and just leave the key in ignition, put it back in car and it started right up... ..... (after i charged the battery) key turning smoothly now... I was amazed!!! All to your video Bro I would have never thought i could or know how to have fixed this problem without you... even if its just a temporary fix for now... until i get the money to buy a new ignition cylinder, but until then thank so much now I can get to work!!! Thanks Bro appreciate you taking the time to make this video.

    Dude! Thank you so much! My 1999 Toyota Camry froze up on me and I ordered a new ignition cylinder but that part wasn't going to arrive as soon as I'd like it to so I went ahead and tried your method of fixing the current ignition cylinder instead and it worked! All of my little rings were popping up so I removed all of them lol. I was worried that would affect the ignition cylinder and possibly be a problem but it didn't affect it at all. Also, a side note, my key wouldn't rotate to accessory (after many attempts) so I had to drill out the pin instead of pushing it up with a screw driver. Thank you!!!!

    Thanks again for the video. With your help I was able to fix the lock. I wound up drilling 3 holes but had to buy a cobalt drill bit (1/8"). I removed the split wafers in #s 4 and 7. I have a question; there was only one small spring in each hole containing the split wafers. Did I miss some springs or are there supposed to be but one spring per hole?
    I pre cleaned the lock with brake cleaner and used the DuPont Non-Stick dry film lubricant with teflon FYI.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fine work. I only remember one spring for each hole. Now that you mention it, I think I had to drill some holes too. Thanks for sharing the details. This may help someone else tackling this job.

    I replaced ignition lock cylinder but key still won't turn. It took me almost 8 hours to drill it out from pin side and key side. I bought new cylinder and installed but the key in is start position and turns a little but not much. 1992 Toyota pickup is parked a little downhill. What can I do? Any suggestions? I tried wiggling steering wheel changing gears, disconnected battery. Nothing helped.

    hello i have a kia ceed 2010 in which the mechanism for the steering lock doesnt engage when i pull out the key from the ignition. Giving a little tap at the bottom of the steering wheel makes the poping sound with which the steering lock engages. The disadvamtage of this is that the car thinks that the keynis still in the ignition so my remote control of the car wont work. I tried lubricating the cylinder with liquid grease sprey and wd40 but it didnt work. Does somebody have any suggestions? Thanks im advance.

    You know what the little black metal piece is that sits under the bezel?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don't and I don't think it's available as a separate piece.

  • @AikidoTubeSock
    @AikidoTubeSock 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why did you disconnect the battery? Also, did you have to use a vise to secure it so you could get the front bezel off?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a habit of disconnecting the battery when removing an ignition lock cylinder. This one isn't on the steering column, where there are concerns about air bag activation, so it isn't necessary. I don't remember using a vice but I do remember how hard it is to take this apart.

    • @AikidoTubeSock
      @AikidoTubeSock 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOriginalMechanic I am considering doing this but I have found units ranging from $15, $20, $30 & $47 that are all supposed to be compatible. I'm pretty sure the Beck-Arnley for $47 works, as a TH-cam video shows it installed in my exact car (model). I don't have a vise or any heavy duty tools but would prefer a rebuild so I can have a single key for all access.
      So, is there a reasonable foundation for your habit of disconnecting the battery or is it just something you've seen done?
      Thanks for your prompt response.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AikidoTubeSock You don't need to disconnect the battery. I bought a $20 replacement from Rock Auto and it didn't fit and had to go back. I hear you about the same key. These cylinders are not made to come apart so it does take some patience (well, stubbornness) to get them apart but it can be done with vice grip pliers and prying tools. Good luck.

    How to I get it into accessories if someone broke into my car and broke the ignition

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may have to replace the ignition if the original is not repairable.

  • @AikidoTubeSock
    @AikidoTubeSock 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have liked to have seen exactly how you got the end cap/bezel/cover off. IMO the hardest part of the whole operation. I am ready to do mine and so far I'm planning on drilling in three spots and hoping that will work without doing so much damage as to not be able to replace the cover with a dab of glue (or shoe goo).

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I know. I wish I had clips of that. It was a lengthy process of prying with flat blade screwdrivers and twisting and pulling. I actually gave up and ordered a replacement. But that didn't fit in the Camry so I went back to taking it apart. Just stick with it with basic tools and it will come off. Even if you don't get the cover back like it was you'll never know when the cylinder is snapped back into place.

      @@TheOriginalMechanic I found another video where a hole was drilled into the side of the pin and the pin was pushed up. Then he just pounded a phillips head into the 2 rivets to push open the cover. It worked for him...
