    They're not many things on this planet tougher than a tapered roller bearing. The ones from that bus are as porous from wear as a sugar cube sprayed with hot water. The time and force required to do that is mind boggling but they held their shape overall. It's simply amazing how strong humans can make some things and then gradually destroy them with neglect.

    A hot water pressure washer would make your cleanup way easier. I invested in one years ago and it works awesome. Melts the grease and dirt away way better than a standard cold water pressure washer. Good catch on the hubs being different, alot of people would of overlooked that one!

    Looks like steel eating termites been going after those bearing rollers! Never seen pitting that deep before…..

  • @scrumpydrinker
    @scrumpydrinker ปีที่แล้ว +9

    That bearing damage is rolling contact fatigue pitting which is the usual failure mode for very high mileage taper roller bearings, they typically have a hardened surface with a softer carcass. These terms of course are relative, what happens is the hardened surface will break away from the main carcass of the bearing which then goes on to further damage it. This is also made worse by poor adjustment, if you mess up the setting procedure it makes matters much worse. If that vehicle was in revenue service before you got to it it should have had regular inspections and those issues SHOULD have been picked up much sooner.
    From the evidence so far the best cure would be a gallon of petrol and a match, just be careful you don’t singe your eyebrows…

    those two wheel hubs look like they are off different models the flange to wheel spacing is the same to look at but the back sides are totally different so was either a back yard fix to get it mobile and off load it or was some shady workshop that could not get the right part or didnt care and just made it fit and did not care it was so dangerous to send it out like that. maybe thats why a brand new seal was still leaking as it likely was not ment for that stub at all!

As I was minding my own business, dozing off, I heard a crack, & something flew out of the wheel assembly, a stone I thought. Then another, and another, and another - I got the driver to stop & inspect, found four studs broken off (due to overtightening I guess). We crawled into Chicago for repairs.

    In New Zealand, where I live every vehicle, before the year 2000 is inspected every 6 months. If you showed up with that much rust you would be ordered off the road. It would be virtually impossible to get it certified and back on the road. I had a small amount of rust in my MGB and it cost a fortune to get it fixed and keep it on the road. I enjoy your videos.

    • @merledoughty5787
      @merledoughty5787 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes as we know Ian our COF and WOF inspections can be tough. this bus would not make it, so what do they do in the USA as far as vehicle safety inspections go I wonder, there is much welding work to be done to the structure let alone tie rod ends and wheel bearings

    • @joseantoniocastrellonjr2568
      @joseantoniocastrellonjr2568 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @merledoughty5787 US DOT inspection shops are a joke. Most of the time, those techs only check the lights, braking distance, horn, wiper blades, tread depth, and signals.
      Only a state trooper with a personal ax to grind would bother failing a vehicle with a rusty frame. And only one that was in the northern states used to seeing salt on the roads damage frames.

    Beautiful bus but there’s a heap to do to get the chassis back. Notice you didn’t mention the big crack visible top-right 3.22, but maybe that’s a manufactured slot? Guessing the aluminium panels would be practically impossible to get nowadays but they look in great shape. The rest is just metalwork, time, and lots of money. Great job! Subscribed! 👍🏻

    • @tsbjelland
      @tsbjelland ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That there is a classic case of 'grease contamination'. People, ya gotta keep all these surfaces free of extraneous lubrication. 🤪
      I'm not an expert, but this looks like excessive wear. Bearings are very hard, thus brittle. With all the stresses and metal detritus, the bearings fail. Being so hard, they tend not to wear down or deform. Instead, they fracture breaking off tiny pieces that add to the problem. This looks like a long term accumulation of this. However, as I said, I'm no expert....

    • @MrBirdnose
      @MrBirdnose ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tsbjelland Roller bearing rollers are also case hardened. Once the outer, hardened layer is compromised it starts to flake away and expose the softer metal underneath. The pits also create vibration and impact loading that accelerate the process of fracturing away more metal.

    Geez, it's the kind of bus where it might be better just to get it drivable, drive it back home, and park it. Maybe somebody with a lot of rural land would want it just to live in. Get all the hotel functions in good order and you have a home in the woods! A side benefit is that it can actually move about on the property if needed.

    This ole Eagle needs a lot of TLC. I agree with viewers, use some hearing protection. After 40+ years as motorcoach tech, my high frequency is shot. Too bad we think we are invincible until it’s too late.

    And children this is what you get if you drive the bus and don't have annual inspections.
    Or
    Don't let your dog chew on bearings before you fit them.
    As for the corrosion - that would make "Watch Wes Work" feel proud of the bus, in a bad sort of a way.

    Those hubs were a horror story.

  • @1954shadow
    @1954shadow ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that oil or, metal flake paint, coming from the hub?

    Man those bearings actually look porous like they had some kind of reaction. I’ve never seen a set that bad that were still together. Do they make sleeves for those spindles that are worn?

      Chemical damage caused by breakdown of the oil and moisture.

      I have installed inner bearing wheel seal sleeve, never have reused such a badly damaged spindle . The spindle can be built back up and turned on a lathe.

      Oil/grease from the bad one looked
      All kinds of emulsified.
      Water intrusion somehow, somewhere.

    @ 17:32 ,how its possible to have that kind of damage? due to metal/metal chip contact or some sort of vibration? Or even a corrosion? Thank you BGM.

  • @hartsfire5706
    @hartsfire5706 ปีที่แล้ว

    with all of the rust and other damage under this buss is it going to be worth putting all of the money in to fixing every thing you have found even to this point?
    the rust is the big thing will it pass a inspection? i know here in pa it would be scraped for failing.

      Seeing how they just bought the bus for over 30k yes i think throwing money at it will help to mitigate their loss but it’s close. If they bought it for 10-15k I’d say no

      @hartsfire5706 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BusGreaseMonkey sadly if they gave 30k for it you are right.
      it will take a bit of welding and plating to get the frame back up to road worthy.

    The bearing is nasty. That hub is nasty and shouldn't be used. The studs could break out of it. They aren't even a matching pair. that poor guys won the jackpot.

  • @justfun985
    @justfun985 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could this be the bearing was overloaded weight wise? There was talk about the weight distribution was bad?
