The song was originally written and performed by Prince, Stevie Wonder was on harmonica and they sampled his hit “fingertips”, rap was done by Melle Mel of “Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five”, the choreography was done by ex Soul Train dancer and original member of “the Lockers” Shabba Doo, and the song was released around the same time the movie Purple Rain and soundtrack was released; pure marketing magic. The summer of 1984 was on 🔥 with great music.

"I Feel for You" was a top ten hit for Chaka Khan in 1984. Prince wrote the song for his second album in 1979. Chaka Khan received two Grammy Awards for her version - Best R&B Song (with Prince as its songwriter) and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Khan. That was my junior year in high school. Melle Mel rapping and Stevie Wonder playing a chromatic harmonica laying up arias for Chaka Khan? Ear candy. The dance pop stylings of the song sound more like what was called "New Jack Swing" later in the decade than what I think of as hip-hop, although in hindsight, many elements of what would become hip-hop are there in the song and in that video. Back then what came to be called hip-hop was still mostly called rap. Run-DMC, for example, before "Walk This Way" in 1986. At any rate, Chaka Khan is awesome. Check out her 1974 break out hit "Tell Me Something Good" with Rufus when you can.

Props for recognizing Stevie's harmonica after a single bar of it. But yeah, it sure is recognizable. Prince wrote this song and recorded it for his second album. When Chaka's version came out, Prince had blown up with Purple Rain, so he kept her off the number one spot.

    About this song:
When this song came out Thriller by Michael Jackson had been out two years and he was still on his throne untouched. But, when I Feel For You came out in 1984 (which was written by Prince), Prince also came out with the Purple Rain album, Madonna came out with the Like A Virgin album that included hits like Material Girl and Get Into The Groove, Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA. Also that year massive hit singles like Let The Music Play by Shannon, Caribbean Queen by Billy Ocean, Jump by Van Halen, and many other singers came out swinging like Phil Collins with Sussudio and Against All Odds. 1984 is considered one of the best years in music history. I Feel For You hit number one topping everyone and Chaka took over the world winning a Grammy and walking away like a boss. That is like it was when this song came out in 1984.

This is a Prince song that she covered. Chaka's version was released in 1984. That was Stevie Wonder's harmonica playing on the track. And that was Shabba Doo the break dancer in the yellow outfit who choreographed and danced in Madonna's Who's That Girl Tour. He was in the movie Breakin.

I really liked this song waaaay back in 1984, the year I in earlier comments claimed to have been the greatest of the great years of the 80ies music history! This song was something new, kind of revolutionary, it was the rap /hip hop element, and it appealed to me right away. But where have all those good years gone...now I'm a 52 year old man, heading for 53 in September...at least, inherited from my fathers side, all 3 of us siblings look at least over 10 years younger than we really are😊😁, with my sister 59, and my brother 56 looking like in their late 30ties, telling me stories of their doctors asking them if their birthdates in their files were correct, after seeing them in person...😂😂, so we are all in way more or less timeless😎😎😂😂, and I therefore complement my sister every year on her birthday for being a timeless beauty😊

Can't believe I just realized that that was Shabba Doo of Madonna's Who's That Girl Tour in the video. And also just found out that in between Prince's original, and Chaka's that The Pointer Sisters did a version of this (not released as a single) so now I'm gonna have to look that up!

I truly do enjoy your takes. One of those songs that was an INSTANT hit in my mind (at the time). And the video did not hurt. It ticked off so many boxes. Everything was about BREAKDANCING at the time and that's what pulled everything together for this one.
I mean, you have MELLE MEL (from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five) OPENING the song, you have a DJ on the decks in a mainstream music video, the two hottest breakdancers in the world and SAMPLING ... which rarely gets mentioned (Stevie Wonder - FINGERTIPS). A record in my parents collection so I picked up on that right away.
Looking back, it really was BREAKDANCING that brought hip-hop on-to a wider stage. It was one of those things ... I tried and was never the greatest on the cardboard but that music - it stuck with me. And I stuck with it.
This song is is one time where the mainstream did not bastardize the sub-culture ... it actually elevated it.

Stevie was on the harmonica. Prince wrote this song. Most of the video was them dancing for a clothes store commercial. That's crazy. That's why they never saw Chaka w/them. I think this is 1 of the very 1st collabs of r&b & rap. The legendary Melle Mel rapped. His group was inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame.

On August 11, 1973, a DJ named Kool Herc threw a party in the basement of an apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in The Bronx, New York. Of course, the foundations of Hip Hop were laid even earlier and in different places by different people, but August 11, 1973 has become sort of a symbolic date signifying ‘the birth of Hip Hop’.

***CHAKA KHAN TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...do you feel it!??? (4:42) ..I do, for YOU....
    - OK, LOTS, on this one....CK was NOT the first to cover this Prince - penned tune, The Pointer Sisters & Rebbie Jackson did it FIRST, in 1982 and 1984...Rebbie actually had it slated as the 3rd single from her "Centipede" Album, but it was pulled from release, Spring 1985....
...CK sung it 'straight', but her record producer Arif Mardin remixed it (...this Man was in his 50's at the time!), and added the rapper, Stevie's harmonica (& sample), & the scratchin' .....and, CK HATED it!! ...CK wanted the track "Eye To Eye" to be the first single, but, it was never released in the USA....
    - ...CK actually released it Sept. 1984, with a WILD, cheap Video of CK, singing in a strip Club, quits, & leaves with the (Female) strippers, and goes to a Male strip Club ("Zippers")!! ...Her record label FREAKED, and pulled the Video, and replaced it with the "Fashion Model" Video, Oct. of 1984....which was a documentary Video, featuring unknown Models & rappers! ...HERE'S the original.... th-cam.com/video/qkz4vZa6dM8/w-d-xo.html
    - ...this tune was THE Song, that started 'Classic' Artists updating their sounds with hip hop flourishes; CK became QUEEN of (Electro) hip-hop, until Mary J. came along....The Album also had the #1 Dance track "This Is My Night", and the CLASSIC quiet storm jam, "Through The Fire"....
    - ...CK used a 'cartoon' drawing (for "I Feel For You"), of her previous (at the time) 1982 Album, "Chaka Khan"; CK was did a photo session, but was so drugged up (with 'glassy eyes'), they scrapped it and used the drawing! ...One of the dumped pics from the session was the cover for the "This Is My Night" single...
...Others said it before me; it peaked at #3, Nov., of 1984, (#1 R&B & Dance), and won the best Female R&B Grammy... I'm not near my Book to give the chart positions! ...Sorrrrry!! ...ha-HAAA!

I read that Chaka hated this song when she first heard it. The original version doesnt have a rap in it and she hated how Melle Mel is repeating her name over and over LOL. I dont think the original with out the rap was ever released. She recorded this song and they added a rapper because hip hop was becoming really big.

If you haven't heard it, you should backtrack to the original Prince version, to know where it came from.

Absolutely a fabulous reaction. Chaka Khan has always been a jam. "Ain't Nobody" and "I'm Every Woman" are also big hits of hers. In the late 70's in New York creative scene came the raise of Spoken Word nights which turned into Rap and the raise of people like Grand Master Flash and Kool Moe D. Then came the commercial success of acts like Run DMC and The Beastie Boys it made it's way out to L.A. by the mid 80's which birthed acts like N.W.A. The dancing you see in this video back then was Break Dancing. But an interesting note, you should check out the song "Rapture" by Blondie. It's one of the earliest form of Rap videos at that time. Might surprise you a bit. But again, absolutely fabulous reaction. Just subscribed ;-)

No technically she isn't the first to have a rapper on a recording. You have to go back to Jamica during the late 1960's during the sound system days and the development of dub reggae. They called their rappers toasters..

One of the few instances where the remake totally obliterated Prince's version. And Prince is THE greatest male musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer. entertainer in human history. I mean, the original is cute 'n' s**t but it needed this presentation to make it a smash.

Hey lovely lady . I’m now a man of the world. And at the time I was break dancing to this when it was released. This in general is a beautiful love song about
Meeting the love of your life with energy and style. Ain’t no shit with this song. Just appreciate the lady primarily. Trust me embrace everything and your hits will go up. Please change your channel intro into something more not self indulgent then your opinion will be Truely appreciated
