Donna Summer was so beautiful and talented
💯
One of the great artists of her generation -- extremely innovative, iconoclastic, tremendously successful, artistic and creative, wrote / played / produced / performed. She was an amazing woman. Thinking of her as the queen of disco just scratches the surface, Baby Empress is cuttin the rug!
I was barely 2 years old when this song came out, and my parents always had Donna playing in the house. So I don't actually remember ever hearing this for a "first time," it was kind of just always there. And I still love it.
Donna has said she wrote this after being at a fancy, ritzy hotel party one night and she went to the women's bathroom and there was a bathroom attendant working the night shift struggling to stay awake. And Donna tipped her of course, but imagined how many other jobs this woman worked the rest of the week to make ends meet, and thus, this song was born.
Love the inspo!
Working Woman’s Anthem!🌹
Absolute 80s banger! Love this track from Donna!
🔥
Once again. One my favorites. Beautiful lady , inside an out. Just like you my dear. Love 💕 it. Hey Boo, Boo❤.
Good morning!😃
Love this song! Love this reaction! Empress, keep doing your thing!
Thank you!
Donna's husband Bruce Sudano is the guy sitting at the counter that pinches the (waitress) protagonist of the video. The song peaked at #3, in a summer of 1983, which was a hot summer of music. The song was a huge hit, and finished at #15 on the year-end chart for 1983. The video was in play for months on MTV and Donna became the first black female to have video played in heavy rotation on MTV in August of 1983. She would go on to set a precedent of having 3 consecutive videos played in heavy rotation (and before MTV switched its main focus to top 40 music in November of 1984). This precedent would not be surpassed until Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation Album 89/90.
😮😮
Wow, shes going to be a TH-cam pro!!
💯😂
Amazing Donna Summer on so many levels, not just an incredible vocalist. She was the first Black woman to have a music video played on MTV, and the FIRST Black female artist to be nominated for an MTV Video Music
Oh wow! I didn’t know that

I’ve heard 7/10 pop, 4/10 r&b, 3/10 dance - one thing clear is Donna was winning across the board
As a Donna Summer fan since the mid 70’s , and saw Donna become the Queen Of Disco, it was so cool to see Donna step into the cool MTV 80’s and have hits ! And this was the biggest one in the 80’s! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Baby Empress is too cute! 😊 I remember this Donna Summer hit was played on heavy rotation on the radio and MTV for the video. Classic 80s bop and so damn catchy. Fun reaction as usual Empress!
Thanks glad you enjoyed!
Banger! I feel what your saying. Working for the public sucks. People can be mean & nasty. My first job as a teen was a fruit store in miami. It's called el palacio de los jugos aka the palace of the juices. It was an "under the table pay" job. We'd sell natural juices, fruits & hot food. It made me not like working for the public.
💯💯
Good reaction. Always nice to have a personal tale that relates to the song your reacting to. That's what makes your channel enjoyable and more unique in this field.
I appreciate that’ll
🧡🔥 Awwwww, bye Pumpkin! My daughter used to make me play this when I picked her up from school. Smh lol Tfs!
😂baby girl said she was working hard for the education
@@EmpressReacts Right 🤣🤣
"She Works Hard for the Money" was a top ten hit for Donna Summer in 1983. And while I wasn't into pop music that year, it's a catchy tune with a soft reminder to treat your waitress well written right into the hook.
This is the first DS jam I remember hearing. I didn't get into her disco era hits until after I heard Melody of Love, but I was old enough to hear this when it came out. Thus this is always a top 10 Donna Summer hit for me!
💜💜
The woman worked 5 jobs with no car and no man? Then walked home to a filthy house with 2 screaming kids like damn this lady can’t catch a break!
Facts 😂
Have to say this, but the music videos of the 80s and mid 90s are way much more better than the music videos you have nowadays. Donna's video was almost a mini movie but of course she isnt the only one. Just more creativity bck then.
***(80's) DONNA SUMMER TRIVIA TIME!! (PART TWO)*** ...keep on workin', Donna (5:34).......
- *....ba-BOOOOOOOOM!* ....a massive, massive MASSIVE hit, and Women's ANTHEM! .....hitting Summer, 1983, Donna was in the thick of the HOTTEST tunes of the 80's, updated her sound, and became the *FIRST BLACK FEMALE* to have a Music Video in heavy rotation on MTV! (3:43)
- ....her "She Works Hard..." Album sold BIG, and Donna had her first EVER back-to back Top Ten R&B hits with "She Works...." (#1 R&B) & "Unconditional Love" (#9 R&B).....and, Donna also won a 'Best Inspirational Recording' Grammy with the LP track "He's A Rebel"......
- ....Donna also had a track on the "Flashdance" Soundtrack that Summer with a leftover track from "I'm A Rainbow" called "Romeo" which sold like HOTCAKES! ...and Irene Cara got to sing "Flashdance" after Donna turned down the opportunity!
- ...Empress!? ....It......was...........HUUUUUGE! ....Oh, by the way (2:40) that Donna's Husband as the customer, (4:48), that's the "Solid Gold" Dancers, and (4:26).....the Woman's House was ROBBED, the Kids didn't do that.....I thought that TOO! ...ha-HAAA!
Oh dang! Not the house getting robbed 😂. And so was this Donna at her peak?! Didn’t realize she was the first blk woman played on mtv
@@EmpressReacts ...more 'comeback', than peak....she FINALLY entered "The 80's", and became Donna THE SINGER, than "The Queen Of Disco"......
Donna’s classic 80s hit. The vocals are there as usual. An anthem for the hard working women and Waffle House employees. Empress can’t believe you worked there, so glad you survived 😂.
I can’t believe it either 😂
Yes the last disco hits in the 80s. She stop singing this classic once she became Christian. I guess the song was about ladies of the night.
Oh! Interesting
***(80's) DONNA SUMMER TRIVIA TIME!! (PART ONE)*** ...work, Donna, WORK (4:30).......
- ....OK, this is OFFICIALLY going to be the loooooongest "Trivia Time" I've EVER given, because there so much, and I want to give it ALL! ...this is PART ONE......
- ....Donna was going thru a LOT in 1982 / 1983; her "Donna Summer" Album had weak sales, her 1981 Album ("I'm A Rainbow") was shelved, she sued her Old record company to get out of her contract, she had her 2nd & 3rd Child, and she became Born Again....
- ...After the slow sales of her 1982 Album, she owed her Old label (Casablanca) ONE more Album to be free & clear of them.....She wanted TOTAL CONTROL of the project, and didn't want any 'outside' influence........THEN, she went to the 1983 Grammys, and went to the Bathroom.....
- ...Donna noticed a female Bathroom attendant falling asleep against a Wall, and said, "...Boy, she works hard for the Money...." .........uh-OH................................................
Talk about great inspo?! So was the rainbow album ever released?!
@@EmpressReacts ...YEP....In 1996, as a contract obligation.....It actually was re-released again in 2021, and called "Rainbowed & Recoloured", with upgraded sound & Dance Club mixes........
@@RBS_ oh wow! So she was like release that album I made in the 80s and let me be done 😂
@@EmpressReacts ....ding ding ding...... ; )
Not sure where you are getting this stuff from, Donna sued Casablanca Records in January 1980, for 10 million. Polygram (who owned 50 of Casablanca) fired Neil Bogart and then had to counter sued Donna. Because Polygram removed Neil Bogart from Casablanca (without knowing the details of her contract signed with Bogart on his Casablanca label). Donna was a free agent because she had a key-man clause in her contract (once Bogart was gone, her contract was nullified). She singed with Geffen June 1, 1980. Although both Geffen and Casablanca were unable to release any music, until the lawsuit was settled. The counter suit by Polygram claimed that they were owed 3 albums. The court found that Polygram had not included Greatest Hits On the Radio as studio album. The court sided with Donna, and counted the album as one of the owed albums. Casablanca released another Greatest Hits package called Walk Away, and the single Walk Away when the suit was settled in September of 1980 (thus the second album). The judge award no money to Donna, but he did give her the rights to her music catalog,. It was Geffen Record's error since Summer still owed Polygram/Casablanca one album, not to have given the shelved, I'm A Rainbow album, to them. It was after the release of the 1982 Summer album, that Polygram reminded Summer and Geffen that they were still owed an album. Which is why this Album was released on Polygram's Mercury label. Who spent money on promotion and hired a great video direct Brain Grant (which is why this was her most successful album of the 80s) Unfortunately the Geffen executives didn't think established superstars required promotion. The 1996 release of I'm Rainbow had nothing to do with any contract (as Donna owns the music she recorded with Geffen). She made sure of that when she signed with Geffen.
It’s interesting how you and some others equate Donna to disco only. When she sings a rock song (nightlife) you call it Rock disco , and when she sings a 80s pop song you call it 80s disco .. lol Donna is a singer who sang different style throughout the decades and won Grammys in 4 different musical genres. ( none Disco) just saying lol ❤❤ :)
no offense taken! 😘when you put it like that i get your frustration
OK Empress serving up waffles and serving up real life experiences however you didn’t give it 10 and you didn’t say it’s going on the playlist. I’m very sad. Very very sad. Aloha.🌺
I was waiting for her to say ” Fire bop! Tens across the board!” Maybe next time.
Ah Jared! Sooo the video was so entertaining I was mostly having fun watching the plot and not 100% invested in the vocals. Reason why I listen to the songs first when doing the Madonna journey. I enjoyed the whole thing.
Sorry! I was too invested in Marge in them kids and not the vocals 😂
