Thank you!! I am practically an expert on this now. And if the ignition pin at the back becomes locked and you can't seat the cylinder in correctly check the steering wheel lock which is inside the housing. If I get this beast started you are in my will Rich. This has been a wicked pissa. : )

i want to sincerely thank you for you videos regarding saturns. just today my key became stuck in the ignition and a locksmith wanted to charge me 150 dollars to fix the problem and while i was waiting for them to make time for me i watched a few of your videos. i was relieved when i watched the video about taking out the lock cylinder and found that a small piece of the cylinder had broke and was blocking the cylinder from turning. removing the debris freed all problems. thank you richpin06a.

I've had 4 S-series Saturns over the years and you've helped me on quite a few fixes. Big thanks Richpin! On this one I went with the cheap route for my 99 SL2 and got a lock cylinder from the parts store (part #LC13590) for about $17. Only minus is it comes pre-coded so I now have different keys for the ignition.

Great video. I only had trouble getting the new cylinder in because the inside piece that turns the ignition switch wasn't pushed in all the way. So with plyers you have to rotate it to the correct position(in line with new cylinder in ACC position) AND PUSHED IN ALL THE WAY so the bottom of that peice is not touching the cylinder housing.

Just to be helpful I found an entire standard/metric nut driver bit set, that fits into any standard driver, at Tractor Supply Depot for less than $5. Of course this will only help those within their area, but anyone that has one near them that needs this little nut driver would be keen to go there. The next cheapest set I found was at lowes for $20.

This was incredibly helpful! I was a little intimidated by the job, but we just knocked it out in 30 minutes after getting the parts you prescribed. And while, I'm sure that grinding down the 5.5 mil hex driver makes it easier, i was able to make do with what I had in spite of the super tight fit. Thanks, richpin06a!

Question: The back cover was already broken as is, so i just broke it off. I have a 1998 Saturn SL1 and the instructions in this video matched perfectly with what i needed to do, and now i have a brand new ignition cylinder now, my old one was broken and had to wiggle the key to find the sweet spot to be able to turn it on. My question is what is the back cover called to be able to find a replacement for it? Having a tough time finding it.

You da man!!! And I am the poo now thanks to you. I got my 93 Gold Saturn back on the road by watching your videos. Told my kid if he EVER puts the wrong key in one of my Saturns again I will "kill" him. $40 bucks and a few trips to the local junkyard later I have my beast back. One item of note since I just did this job on my 1995 SL1. I didn't pry the bezel off since the new lock had one on it already. Secondly, the 2 screw in mine were not the 5.5mm but were a Phillips screw instead. I've owned the car since new so I know nobody replaced them.

if the key does not turn the cylinder, try some WD40 in the ignition and tap on the top of the housing with a small hammer or wrench or something while trying to turn the key. It worked for me, even though I tried all week to turn the key. Even tried a new key. I squealed with glee.

It's A little different on Automatic transmission cars ! You have to keep in mind there is
cable interlock for the cable that goes to Automatic transmission gear selector !
The cable is that box that is attached to the bottom side of the body of the igntion assembly.

we have the top and bottom collar off of the steering wheel and are currently using the switch as an ignition module but the key is stuck between lock and accessory because it feels like the tumblers inside broke lose and are jamming the lock in the position it's in. I'm going to try to remove it the way you showed any way, who knows maybe i'll get lucky but if this works then we'll only need the lock cylinder and not the whole assembly,

My key is stuck in my 1993 Saturn with the steering wheel not locked. I watched your video (Outstanding! Thank you!) thinking I may need to replace the ignition lock cylinder (What a joke; I'm a mechanical klutz), but I don't think I can do it with the key stuck in. Or more accurately, I don't think I can get someone with a brain to do it with the key still in. With the steering wheel not locked, could this be more related to the automatic transmission gears or the battery? Thank you very much.

If you got the key out with the cylinder still in the ACC position i would say your key must be very worn.I would have a new key cut by the VIN from the dealer and see if that will work.

If the pin will not move with the cylinder in the ACC position then it sounds like the cylinder is not in correctly.

Rich, awesome video. I used this as a guide for replacing a cylinder where I had been getting my key stuck (both getting to turn to "acc" and when inserting the key, and getting it to turn back to pull it out). The replacement went smooth, just like you showed it. However, now a few days after that replacement I'm getting my key stuck in this *new* cylinder when I try to take the key out. Inserting and turning the key is fine, but it gets stuck trying to turn it to get it out. Surely it's not that this new cylinder is bad too. What the heck could it be if it's not the cylinder itself?

My 2007 VUE (not a hybrid) has a problem with the ignition cylinder. I have the trim off. I have only one hole on the top of the ignition that could possibly be the hole to use to push down on but it won't push down. What can you tell me? I put the key in and turned it to accessory and tried to put the L shaped tool in the hole, it would only go maybe 3/16", then turned the key to the right as if I was starting the car slowly and pushed down firmly on the L shaped tool. I also pulled on the key hoping it would come out. Nothing. What am I doing wrong or is a 2007 different. My key is not chipped.

The car is 2001 Saturn SL2 w/automatic transmission. I wanted to remove the Steering Column on that car, but confused on one black cable in the plastic box, which is attached to the bottom of the Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing w/some tabs and zip-tie (probably some tabs were broken, so someone attached w/zip-tie, bcs I saw another film and there were just tabs there). I'm afraid to remove that box w/cable going out of it, since think that it may mess up the lock (the box w/cable is sitting just under the Lock Cylinder). On another side that cable is attached under the Shifting handle in the same way how it is shown in this film. I couldn't find any similar Lock Ignition systems in films, besides the one mentioned above where the author just released that box slightly w/words: I don't know what will happen if to remove that box completely. I would appreciate any explanations on that box w/cable and its role. Thank you for so detailed film.
The film (and it is the only one I found on YT) where that object (I mean black box w/cable coming out of it and going to the area of console and ends w/white bushing) can be seen is:
    th-cam.com/video/4XJscUVv_q8/w-d-xo.html
It starts fm ~1:27 (the author also concerns about total removal of the box), then it can be seen at @2:05 and @3:15 again. Thank you again for the attention to my question.
Update: I have Shop Manual for that car and found fm one description there that the black box might be roll connector (I don't know what it does exactly). They say:
On 2001 model remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retainer tabs w/small flat ...
All that is in Steering Wheel location. In another place they say:
On vehicles w/automatic transaxles, connect park lock cable to ignition module (shown housing for the ignition lock cylinder).

When you installed the new lock cylinder, do you now have two different keys for the ignition and door and trunk now? Is it possible to buy a new lock cylinder and get it keyed the same as your original keys?

If the new cylinder does not come with a key then someone has to code the new lock cylinder to match your existing keys.

Rich, you're really good at answering questions and your videos have saved so many people so much time and money. Thank you for your kindness and enthusiasm!
That being said, my key is super worn and jiggling would normally get it to turn. Lately my security light comes on and the car kills itself when I try to start it. Also, the instrument panel will shut down without fuel or temperature levels registering. Do you think that these issues are linked to the dead key as some sort of theft deterrent that can be fixed by either simply replacing the cylinder/cutting a new key to the vin? Or do you think I have bigger issues?

You can not get the cylinder out till it is in the ACC position.

That is a problem, some people wait to long then they have to replace the housing and cylinder.
