    thanks again for another well thought out video that helped me save money on my 99 sl1. One note of difference from a 99 and the 98 in the video was there was no spring loaded thing at the base of the lock cylinder housing to line up. just push it back in and it snapped in place

    Thanks for the great video, my key was not turning and getting extremely stuck, I bought a new lock cylinder with keys off eBay, but instead of using new keys, I took the old pin tumblers from old cylinder and put them in new one, so now I have a perfect working ignition with my original keys that go to all locks on car

    I've used silicone on other locks and I find it works better than WD-40. WD-40 will eventually attract dirt and you'll have to clean it out again.

    I did this clean out on my 1996 Geo Prizm (slash) Toyota Corolla and it worked like a charm. 2 years of fiddling with the key is now history. Many thanks to you Rich!

    Really appreciate this and your other vid on removing the lock cylinder. My 99 SC2 has given me trouble with the key for a while now. I've been struggling with how to get the cylinder housing open to code a new cylinder (with no luck yet) but I think I'll just try this approach first!

    Rich, I love your video! It is very detailed. The only question I have is the about the cylinder being engaged into the ignition switch. Could you give me a little more detail as to what you did with the needle-nose pliers? It looks like you pinched or twisted something. Please clarify if possible and thank you!

    Before flushing out the cylinder, I bet you could get a small glass or even better, a tall shot glass and let the cylinder sit n soak in your cleaning fluid of choice. I'd definitely be wearing gloves bc if the cleaning fluid can clean years of caked on grease, what's it doing to my skin ... ? Same goes for the WD40 being able to flush out the gunk. Thanks for the video!

  • @RichpinTv
    @RichpinTv  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you pop the little bezel off that is around the cylinder and the top and bottom column covers you should be able to use a screwdriver or pliers to remove the cylinder.

    Is the 5.5 mm size chosen so that few people would be able to get the cover off without specialized tools? Or does 5.5 mm correspond to an SAE size?

    Rich, I have a 2001 SC2 and I can't get the cylinder out. I leave the key in the cylinder and try not to tur off and the key doesn't want to move. It sometimes takes 15 minutes to get the key to turn. The key will come out even when the car is running. I have tried to use a screwdriver to hold the pin but I can't get the cylinder to come out because the key comes out with in acc or run position. Any other recommendations?

    Rich I found out that was an factory recall on the s series about the only one though! I had to replace mine and you still every year half to use graphite.

  • @williamgoldshlag666
    @williamgoldshlag666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with Fred: I think that black stuff is graphite lubricant you have just removed from the lock. WD-40 is not a universal lubricant and is definitely not equivalent to a graphite lubricant: just compare viscosity for starters! Do yourself a favor and buy a tube of proper lubricant for two bucks at a local auto parts store.

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not think graphite is the perfect solution as it has been known to clump over time.

    • @perryberens618

      I live in a very humid deep South environment. My locksmith said never use graphite. ( But don't tell anyone) it gums up the locks. He uses silicone spray. I use silicone spray. My sticking lock problems from exterior gates to entrance doors have vanished once cleaned, pretty much as shown in video. The method works on all locks. I use brake cleaner before and after I WD40. No particular reason. Then shake the silicon spray can a bunch to insure it's mixed and spray.

    Have you tried brake cleaner instead of throttle body cleaner? It's way cheaper but it's more caustic to some materials. If the lock only contains metal then brake cleaner should work but I would like to know if anyone's already tried it and their results...

  • @jw200
    @jw200 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Richpin
    I once tried your method, lots of stuff came out. And lubricated it with something, i dont remember what it was, PTFE i guess.
    But now it seems its getting worse and worse.
    I put my key in and have to do lot of wiggling with key before i can turn it.
    I have also steering wheel lock. It makes me worry.
    Is there anything else i can lube or do with it? The wiggling i have to do each time is getting very annoying.
    I know the lock cylinder is old and worn but maybe there is a way to make it better.

      Why would you not thank Rich instead, the Real god who helped us?
