I realized you need a 2.5mm desoldering tip for the desoldering gun. I tried to look for such tip online but couldn't find it for this model of pump. Where did you get the 2.5 mm nozzle from or did you have to cut an existing one to have a larger diameter nozzle?
2.3 mm is what we have and use. It's the largest one Hakko sells I believe
Hi Nick, would you mind explaining how the heatsink was removed? Did you use low melt solder (64/40?) in conjunction with the desoldering pump to remove it?
We typically always add solder first to help with easier flow, but we don't use low-melt solder. We just use leaded solder and that's good enough. Low-melt solder wouldn't help more than just leaded solder would. You still need to melt the high temp melt point solder, the point of adding new fresh solder is to help transfer the heat from your iron to the joint/heatsink/board/OG oxidized solder essentially. Using the solder pump is a game changer because it allows you to have more contact points with the joint since it wraps around the entire joint.
I just fixed one I found on the side of the road. I set it on the hood of my truck and took it apart. Took the board off. Heated the back of the board with a propane torch and boom working
Unfortunately I don't think the propane torch will offer a reliable long term repair, but if you are interested in a long term repair, we do offer the service and use the high end machine shown in the video.
After doing lots of research on BGA rework, it seems that the best approach to take is to actually rework the BGA from scratch by way of taking off the BGA, reball it with leaded solder, and reflow it all over. With the quick reflow method that's happening in this video, given enough time the same issue will occur again with respect to unleaded solder joints cracking due to heating and cooling of the GPU. In other words the unleaded solder balls on the BGA will not flow properly with the GPU heating and cooling during operation due to the high melting point hence the issue will occur again in the future.
That is exactly correct! Not only that but we are also able to use leaded solder instead of lead free which would further increase the reliability of the joints. We have posted several reball videos showing this in the past and breaking down this process.
Unfortunately doing this does requires much more work and labor as the reflow performed in the video. This means that in order for us to perform such a repair, a higher service fee is necessary. Unfortunately most people would rather the quick fix at a lower price point rather than the correct fix at a higher price.
We perform both based on the customers needs and budget. All of our high end (more expensive) services come with reballs or chip replacement entirely. Regardless all services sold on the nickstvs.com website have a 1 year warranty.
I sent my mainboard to Nick’s for my Vizio P502ui-b1 and unfortunately they advised me the mainboard was not economically repairable😏

That is true! No shop can fix 100% of boards that comes in. Not every board fails the same way and is worth fixing. Additionaly, something you forgot to mention is that your board had also been worked on by someone else previously. When a board is worked on and has several parts replaced before it is given to us, our success rate usually drops by 50%. Tampered boards tend to have more damage and other issues than if we are the first ones to work on them. Your board had a lot of work done and thus made it to difficult to be worth fixing.
In this video, the work done prior didn't inflict additional damage to the board and thus was easy to correct. That however is not always the case as we found out with your circuit board.

The failure is most likely the same. When the processor has issues with contact to the PCB due to the cracked joints the symptoms can manifest in different ways, but are still caused by the same issue.

hi nick i dont have all the tools you used, do u think i cam just buy a new mainboard from ebay and just swap it out?
So I don't think you can buy one, which is why we made the video, because these boards are impossible to buy anymore. If you do find one, it may not work for long either since all of these are old boards now.

How much did that repair cost? With the price of new 50"+ 4K TVs running as low as $300 I just want to see if it's worth getting my board fixed (looks like I have exactly the same issue). THanks!
I'll tell you what I tell everyone that says this.
Sure you can buy a $300 50"4k, you can even buy one for $208 I just checked Amazon, but the thing is you can also buy one for $500 for $800 and some 50" are over $1,000.
So to rephrase your question the way I hear it is if I don't care about the quality of my TV and I want to purchase the cheapest piece of junk available for sale, will it be worth fixing?
Well, actually the answer is probably still yes even if I charge you $200 to fix your $200 TV and without going into the finer details, when we fix your TV, we commonly have a way to make it better than factory.
But I think you get the idea behind what I am saying.
Yes we do get a lot of customers walking in mostly with the cheap TVs that broke down within 1-3 years of purchase and we fix them daily, but a lot of people are also not buying the cheapest junk, they buy the nicer sets and those of course are even more so worth fixing.
To answer the first question though, check out the video description we have a link to our flat-rate repair service with pricing. This TV was originally sold for $800 and today we have a flat rate service for that mainboard that is 1/8th of the price of the TV. Even though this TV is now almost 10 years old, the quality of the picture on it is far better than the $200 and $300 TV sets sold this year.
Whas was the process of reflowing the BGAs? For example, did the reflowing start at a low temperature and then reached a "desired temperature"? What was this desired temperature?
The desired temperature depends on your environment, the board you are working on, the type of heat you are using such as IR VS convection and other variables. What works for us with our equipment in our environment may not work for you. There is no one size fits all. If you are trying to do this for the first time ever, I do not recommend you practice with a hard to find and replace circuit board. Find a cheap board, or broken board that is similar to the one you want to fix. Practice on that, make your mistakes and learn from them. Then proceed on working on your expensive, hard to replace circuit board.
@@NicksTVRepair basically I'm planning on reflowing a similar BGA on similar board and I'm only working with regular hot air as opposed to a reflow station. I've seen people use hair dryers but that's not what I would do. Using a hot air station I would probably start at a low temperature on the BGA then go up to 235 degrees celcius all within 5 minutes
Hi Nick, I do have a 70 inches Vizio tv.in the power board I am missing the 12 volts just for the TCOM also in one capacitor , everyone has the right volts, wonder if it is the 1000 mf capacitor even though they look ok.

I would need to know at least the model of the TV, and it would be helpful to also have the part number of the board in question as well as the location ID of the components you are measuring in circuit.

Are you getting backlight? Is the TV able to turn on and off?
