    A huge Thank You for this repair video! I bought my 70" Vizio in 2016 and even paid $100 for an extended warranty to give the TV 5 years... but of course it's now 6 years and out of coverage. I started having issues powering on the TV a few weeks ago and was pretty sure something was going in the power supply and wouldn't you know it... today it died for good. :( I tried everything but couldn't get any power light activity.
    Seeing as it was basically E waste, I found this video and thought I'm going to give it a go. I'm not an expert with the soldering iron, but your instructions on removing the bad caps and cleaning up the old solder worked like a charm. I was easily able to pull the caps. Then I went to my local supply store and bought a bag of capacitors for .40 cents each (1000 uf @ 16v), swapped them in and the TV fired up like a champ. All told it took me about 2 hours to fix (I went slow and careful) and it only cost my $1.60 in caps.
    Thanks so much for this video - it saved me from having to buy a new TV!

    Extreme gratitude for making this video. It allowed my to fix my Vizio M60-C3 (same model, only 60" vs 70") and get it up and running again in a day.
    In hopes of helping someone else identify the issue sooner. It started several weeks back where instead of the white light coming on and then a few seconds later the screen would come on and the Vizio logo, it started to happen that I would need to cycle the power off again with the remote, then back on for the picture to come up. A few days later that process needed to be repeated 2x, then later 3x, then later 4x, and eventually it would take about 10 mins of powering off and on before the picture actually came up.
    Right before the TV completely failed to turn on I left it on for an entire day to avoid the cycling, that next morning the TV just randomly turned its picture off (sound was still going) and it never came back on. I tried to cycle power as before, but this time the white led in the left corner would never even come on, it was completely done.
    Overnighted a 20 pack of 1000uf 16V caps and some solder wire from amazon prime, disassembled the TV, took off the power supply board, cut off the old caps, replaced with the new and soldered them on. I replaced all 7 of the 1000uf 16V in the upper right corner of the board, even though only 4 of them, the ones in the video, were visibly bulged. For $20 in parts and maybe 1-2 hours total in time its back up and running. Thanks for the video mate.

      Hey Aaron
      Glad to hear I was able to help you fix your set! Yes sometimes the failure start to appear intermittently and you have to power cycle the TV a few times to get it to work and exactly as you experienced it gets worst over time to the point where it just completely fails.

  • @deepzone31

    This is great. Thanks for the in depth video. I have an M70-D3 that recently died this way. I don't see any capacitors bulging. Is there a way to voltage test this power board or individual capacitors before moving scrutiny over to the main board? If I can fix the power board I would keep the TV. If I have to pay $100 to fix the main board I am binning this TV. It's possible my Roku or PS5 fried the main board over HDMI. There were no storms here.

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      The M70-D3 has a power supply built differently and does not suffer from the same faults as the power supply. If you have a dead no power issue for that model TV I would expect it to be due to the mainboard.
      Yes, there are voltages that you can check on the right connector. The connector will have a legend telling you what voltages are expected out of which pin. This power supply does have some voltages auto turn on, while others wait for a command from the mainboard. Check the standby voltage, your AC detect, and your 12v lines. If you get those, then your power supply is most likely good and the mainboard is the fault.
      Now to talk about whether it is worth repairing. Well, financially it would make sense to get the set fixed even if it cost $900. Why $900, that is the cost of a similar quality TV right now. Yes, you can probably find a lower quality 70" for $600 on a special promotion, or sale, if you are patient, but those deals aren't always around, and it's usually the low-quality sets.
      As long as the warranty of the repair is the same as purchasing a new one, I don't see a downside. The TV is built very well and doesn't have tons of different parts failing on it. The only part that does fail is the mainboard. So once that part is serviced, this TV is worry-free, there is an extremely low chance of say the power supply going out, or the backlight going out in the future. Newer TV sets are built cheaper and cheaper and fail much sooner than older sets.
      Anyways I could go on with that, but we do service the mainboard for your model TV, we charge $129 and offer a 1 Year warranty on the repair.
      In my obviously bias opinion, that's a killer deal no one should pass up on.

      That is a great question to which I do not know the answer since I don't have one in front of me right now. However an easy way to check is to look at the sticker right next to the power plug as it should tell you what input it will allow.

    Hey Nick! Very helpful video, thank you.
    QUESTION -
    If it's a power problem compounded with the TV not working with the sound bar anymore, would that mean replacing the main board? The TV still turns on, but you have to turn it on 5-10 times before it actually comes on.
    I'm going to open it tomorrow to check for Amy visual evidence.
    It all started when I turned on CEC sound control for my Nvidia shield.

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's strange, I think that could be a coincidence. What I can tell you for sure though is that if you have to turn the TV off and on several times, then it means the capacitors on your power supply are starting to go out and need to be replaced.

    • @GrimmityClips
      @GrimmityClips 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicksTVRepair decided to open it up today. Slight bulge on the caps. I suppose I will start with that and then replace the board if it doesn't fix it.
      But yeah, the sound issue is baffling. But from my experiences, Vizio TV's are terrible at working with other devices nicely - even their own (sound bar).

    It sounds like I have the same issue. Does the tolerance enter into picking the correct capacitor? One person mentioned replacing the 16 volt types with 25 volts. Also, I read somewhere that shelf life of capacitors is something to worry about. Is that true?

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to use the same microfarad rating. That is important. But you can use a higher rated voltage for the capacitor, that would be fine. So yes 25v instead of 16v would be totally fine.

    Hey Nick have the same set, mine was a strange sumptom though sometimes upon startup the picture was darker than normal and after having it on for a few mins I'd turn it off and back on and it was perfectly normal. • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If none of the caps are bulging and you don't have any power then most likely you have a mainboard failure. This is also a circuit board that can be fixed but it's a much more advanced repair and requires special tools and equipment.
      If you can find a replacement mainboard, then that should fix it. If you can't find one or if they are very expensive which I do believe they are, then you can also send it in for repair, I have a flat rate repair service for these.

      That I know of for this model the LED strips aka backlight when they go out, I don't believe will damage the power supply. However if they don't get replaced you will start getting dark spots on the screen, which obviously will degrade the picture quality. There are strips available online you can purchase to replace but that is a much more intense/labor intensive/delicate repair.

    Great video! Just a quick question. At the beginning of the video you mentioned this particular customer said there was no power surge of any kind so that the problem likely stems from the power supply. I have a Vizio TV that will not turn on due to a power surge. Will this be a main board issue most likely? I did attempt to replace the entire power supply, but no dice.

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct a power surge almost always affects the mainboard and almost never the power supply. That is because the surges come in through the data lines such as ethernet cable, or HDMI. Somtimes it comes in through your antenna or other such cables.
      If you aren't sure what needs to be fixed we do service both the mainboard and the power supply. If you would like to send them in, we can diagnose them and repair which ever is at fault. It is however most likely that the mainboard is your faulty board and will need to be repaired.

      You can't fix the TV for free. You have to at least buy replacement components (links in video description) and install them to fix the power supply and then there is a chance you may have dark patches which may require you to purchase a new LED driver board and possibly new LEDs as well.

      I assume you watched the video and checked to see if you have bulging capacitors correct? If you do, then your power supply of course needs new caps. If not then most likely it's a mainboard.
      I have not yet seen anything else other than the caps go out on this board before, so I wouldn't recommend replacing MOSFETs unless you are finding shorts on them.

      Chris,
      If there was a lightning strike that affected your modem and your TV was plugged into the modem via ethernet, then I guarantee the power surge traveled through the ethernet wire and broke your mainbaord. Luckily we can fix that if you send in the mainboard.

      Bill,
      You said "I replaced 3 all the caps you recommended" is that a typo? What do you mean you replaced 3 caps but also all of them?
      Make sure to replace all of them because if you don't you could have more issues soon after.
      As for the dark screen post repair, it's likely due to an led failure. One of two things could have happened.
      Either the LED's just happened to fail around the same time your power supply did, or moving the TV around from vertical to horizontal or moving it from one room to another caused a strip to shift or move slights and could have disconnected on of your LED strips causing a second of the screen to go dark.
      If I were you I would open up the TV down to the LED's disconnect and reconnect each LED strip and reboot the set (without putting the screen back on) If this solves the issue then you are good to put the screen back on, if not, then you will need to replace the LED strips.

    I got a free Vizio M50-C1 today from the computer shop, he asked me If I know how to solder, he said he as many customers come in with broken HDMI and USB ports on computers, game systems, and TVs, pay is 50 bucks per port, plus the TV repair he turns away, work is plenty, and so few of us left to do it, I need to practice up and make some real money, I'm a pro with a pencil iron, but not hot air. I don't have much for equipment right now. I have a decent start.

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vernon,
      That's a gold mine right there. Once you do a dozen or so, HDMI port repairs are super easy.
      It's not an identical model but we have a video on repairing an almost identical board:
      studio.th-cam.com/users/videoYt5I267k5fw/edit
      This one was one of our very first vidoes we did a year and a half ago so its not as concise and it kind of goes on for a bit but we show you exactly how to fix it.
      As for the HDMI port comment I had an LG TV come in with every HDMI port knocked off. I think you may have commented on that video before, it was this one:
      th-cam.com/video/Z54O6G8uuJE/w-d-xo.html
      $50 per port is kind of expensive and also kind of cheap depending on the device.
      If it's an Xbox or playstation, $50 is kind of low. Those are much more difficult to replace and take way more time. Most often you are also expected to completely dissasemble the device and put it back together which takes time. For a TV circuit board $50 seems pricey. We typically charge $25 unless there is trace damage, then we charge closer to $80 or more depending on how many traces need to be fixed.

    Before I replaced the capacitors, the board was making a relatively quiet high frequency noise that played on two second intervals, lasting one second. After replacing the capacitors, the noise has changed to a buzzing static electric noise that plays constantly. Curious. It only makes the sound when the tv is plugged in but powered off. (Pressing the “power on” button causes it to go silent) I suspect that it’s the tv’s standby power systems that are causing the capacitors to fail. But I’ve got just one day of electronics experience on account of the soldering I did, so take that with a grain of salt.

      A retired neighbor of mine had us bring his tv out to the road for trash collection after it stopped working, and I asked him if I could have it instead. I figured that it would be cool to see what the inside of a tv looked like, and maybe I would be able to see any obviously failed parts and repair it. Realized a little too late that it was a catch 22. If it happened to be an easy fix, I’d be pretty much obligated to return it, and if it’s a hard fix, then I’d be unable to fix it, and I’d be left with a 40 pound paperweight after my curiosity died down. Turned out to be an easy fix, so I’ll return it soon, but I’d like to diagnose the buzzing sound first. Kinda drives me crazy imagining him throwing out the tv again if the capacitors fail when it’s just a half hour fix.

      I have never heard of this happening before. Are the buttons on the back of the TV also not working anymore? If those are still working, then I would agree that replacing the IR might help, but just in case I would suggest trying the remote first as that is a lot easier to do.
      If the buttons don't work either however, then you may have a different issue somewhere else with the TV.
      If you unplug the TV and plug it back in, does the standby light turn on?
      What model TV do you have? Is it the same one as we are working on in the video M70-C3?

      I don't know if I understand the questions but if it is "How do I order the capacitors" then the answer is I look at the Voltage rating and capacitance rating and order based on the markings on the original caps.
      Capacitance rating will be in microfarad which is abbreviated to uf so look for the V rating and uf rating.
      Then go to eBay and find a replacement.

    I have a Hisense power board, the main cap is bad, it puked the junk all out, but next to it is a space but there is no cap, the pads are in parallel so if I added another cap it would double the capacitance, so why is there a blank space with no cap?

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      The blank space is there because it would cost more money if they made a version of the board without the blank space.
      A different version of the exact same board is used for a different version of the TV perhaps a larger model that requires it. The manufacturer didn't want to redesign an entirely new power supply for each TV they made, so they designed 1 power supply that fits 5 models let's say. Then they just fill the components into the board based on which TV the power supply will go into so it works properly for it.
      This way you only have to design 1 board, the manufacturing company doesn't have to rebuild the factory to adjust for different types of boards, and it saves time and money.
      This is why people say don't purchase the based on the board number aka number printed on the board because that number fits with different model TVs and not all are compatible but instead go with the part number which is the number printed on the sticker of the circuit board.

    • @NicksTVRepair
      @NicksTVRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kyle,
      I have also come accross this in the past. In fact customers are usually aware of this prior to the repairs, and for this model I have started telling them ahead of the repair that all we are quoting them for is the repair of the power supply, and nothing else. If there are additional issues found after the repair of the power supply, additional fees will apply.
      You can't work for free, if you fix the power supply you have to get paid for it.
      Sometimes when I put my LED tester to the strips they appear 100% and I can't detect a fault because they all light up. And yet they are dim after the repair. I have also had situations where the customer gave me an okay on the repair of the LED strips, so we did and post repair the exact same LED's were still dim. We then swapped out the LED driver board, and still some of the strips in the same spots were dim. We know the wiring is good because we can get them to light up with the LED tester.
      A bit of a mistery.
