Sidney sued the filmmakers to stop using her life story as narrative, but legally they're allowed to use her name as long as they don't infringe her privacy or defame her.
Honestly I think it would be better to imagine that gale and Sydney were fighting at the exact same time as Sam was fighting the killer instead of thinking that they were just standing there doing nothing in the kitchen lol

I feel like the phone call during Sam's attack could've still come from Amber- yes, she was at the station but that doesn't mean she couldn't have stepped into the restroom for a quick second to make the call. Also Sam has totally seen Stab, so that's how she knows what Billy wore lol.
Your comment about Mindy during the requel breakdown is why I truly feel that she could be a potential Roman if they so decided to go down that route making chad the unexpected randy and let the twins go head to head
5:36 They didn't use her stories, not that they didn't use her as a character. In the Stab movie wiki, they explain that Sidney became a mom after stab 3 and the story shifted to her "daughter" being the new main character. So Sydney could most definitely be in the movies, just not as a main character.
This movie completely blew me away. Easily the best Scream sequel since Scream 2 in my opinion. I’m gonna seriously miss Dewey though. 😢

I think that Ritchie fumbling for words when he meets Sidney is once again him being star struck and trying to play it off by telling Sam to get in the car so they don't have to see these people ever again.
I love how they flipped the gender for the obligatory horror movie shower scene in this movie.

Imo I think Dewey’s storyline ended perfectly here. It was brutal, emotional, and just fitting for his character. Like Gale mentioned, he stayed behind in Woodsboro to help people because that’s just the person he was, and that’s exactly how he went out.

I was fine with him dying. I didn't care much for how it happened. Would have been cooler for them to lose Richie from the scene and then have the second Ghostface attack him from behind and they both kill him. He wouldn't have expected this because it never happened before, the audience would have been even more shook. They never confirmed two killers before the end.
I wasn't happy with his death, he should've went out like someone whose survived 4 films would. He should've died while making a logical decision or taking one of the Ghostfaces out with him. 😒
After 25 years of loving a character makes this very hard. Wes always said the main trio was the heart of the franchise and that he personally would have never killed them off. Should have let them move on instead.
No way a legacy character should have been killed by a no-nothing, unrelated, 5 foot 1 woman with a shit motive and no connection to the OGs
Tara's story made more sense in the first draft of the script. Her and Amber were in a relationship for a year.. so it made sense for why Tara wanted to save her in the opening, why Amber was so protective of her against her sister and Wes... and also why Amber would have a life-saving inhaler at her house... in the script however it was her father's neckless... in the hospital the killer bust a door open in the script which makes more sense than just being hidden behind a door. Wes was killed more brutally than just the knife in the neck... Chad died too, Vince was stabbed more time too... Mindy was straight... alot of it changed but not the story itself... Also maybe Dewey stopped his physical therapy after he separated from Gale...so the limp might have been back because of that... and from memory when Ghostface was on the phone with Sidney at the police station in scream 3, we hear dewey getting stabbed...(when ghostface says "when you're friend with Sidney, you die")

I think Sam knew some of the info like what Billy was wearing when he died is because she watched the stab movies and the stab movies were based on the original characters life events.
I loved that opening scene. It was so fun to see in theaters. I think they didn't care whether Tara lived or died though - with Tara dead, Sam still would've come back for planning the funeral and all since their mom is apparently in London. It might've backfired if Sam's guilt had her saying she couldn't go back because this was on her but Richie would've used the loving boyfriend card to talk her into going back for closure or something, I'm sure. (Sidenote, I love that Ghostface wine glass!)
The look on Richie's face when Sam is like "Some idiot puts on a Ghostface mask" lol. Girl, read the room (car) because he's giving you signals. Plus, the moment you see him in the blue flannel. I mean, first Billy then Jill wore it. Three times is a pattern and that was a glaring clue for the audience. And with how much Richie and Amber are like "The original was the best!" I have to wonder if that is a deliberate choice of clothing on Richie's part. Derrick was literally the only one who wore blue flannel but was innocent of being a killer.
I think Sam knows what Billy was wearing because of Gale's recording she made and the book. I mean, they even replicated Randy's outfit from the first one so Gale either made a point of describing it in the book or even more people than her watched that recording so they could get the first Stab extremely accurate. So it's not completely unrealistic that she'd know what he was wearing when he died. (As for his looks, it was apparently a mix of VFX and live-action since he wasn't available at first so they used a stand in then when he was available, they brought him in so he could do the scenes. It looks like they tried to mix it to deage him but forgot to take into account that Skeet Ulrich has definitely gotten buffer since 1996 and you can see in his face how much he's matured and filled out. Probably should've done what Disney did for the end of Rogue One when they managed to make Carrie Fisher look like she did in the first trilogy even if you knew it was from effects and all that. Either way, I remember thinking in theaters that they really should've thinned his face out more.)
Honestly, the cops in Woodsboro are so useless. The sheriff literally is like "I've got the killer on the line, trace the call." and then she calls for backup at her house ASAP and not a single cop was close enough to get there in time? Really? Literally all of them got there after she's stabbed in broad daylight? Yeesh. How did she get from somewhere in town back to her house and not a single other cop got there right behind her at least? Drives me nuts. Don't get me started on the guy who is like "Well, sheriff is murdered. Best stop guarding the first victim now!" Though he'd have died if he stayed so yay you for not doing your job, I guess, Deputy Vinson.
Honestly, what would Richie have done if Tara was like "Yeah, I can make it to Modesto" lol? I can just imagine the "oh fuck" look that would've been on his face. Just like what would they have done if she'd gotten the final question right in the opening sequence? The only reason she runs out is because she got it wrong and thinks Amber is going to be killed.
You know what I want to know besides Sidney having Sam's phone number memorized? What kind of phone does Sam have where it's like "Unknown number" but then right underneath that says "Maybe: Sidney Prescott"? I mean what? That's not how cell phones work. At least mine doesn't.
Sidney's "I'm bored." is as fantastic as her "Enjoy that torch." Honestly I just enjoyed them lighting Amber on fire. I assumed that while everything was happening with Amber, everything was happening with Sam and Richie at the same time but they just showed them as two whole scenes rather than cutting between the two and that's why Sidney and Gale don't show up until after Sam has finished her marathon stabbing of Richie.
Again, sorry about the novel length comments but I loved your reactions (and btw, perfect use of the clip from The Replacement) and ended up typing along as I watched.

The Dewey death scene literally has no effect on me, because it is just too unbelievable. It pushes the suspension of disbelief way too far.

I also saw this movie multiple times on theaters and now once on demand and I truly wish that they did something more badass with Sidney at the end with someone she knew being the reveal and less of Sam. I understand they had to pass the torch but it was a let down as Sidney really had nothing to do in the end and I got so hype when they started playing her theme music. I feel like when she was walking through the house, she should of had versions flashbacks of that night back in 1996 as she was going around the house. That would've felt appropriate and cool 😎
We deserved a better fight scene with her for sure.

5:30 Jenny never said that Sidney's character wasn't in the movies, just that Sidney's stories were no longer the basis of the films so they had to invent new plots. It's a small technicality but it makes all the difference.

I like the fact that they didn't kill her off right away cuz it actually takes a really long time to die from a stab wound. Depending on where you're stabbed. It just makes more sense that she would be alive.
Loved this movie, love this franchise, and your commentary is hilariously spot on, per uszh. Something I found irksome, though, with Sam being the daughter of Billy Loomis, is that she's also the granddaughter of Mrs. Loomis, which... coulda/shoulda been mentioned at the Meeks-Martin house? "No one cares about the shitty inferior sequels," says Mindy, despite her uncle getting murdered in 2 by Sam's biological grandmother? It's a big Scream universe and I wish the writers would have pulled more story points from the franchise into the fold, not just in easter egg form.

rewatching this over a year later, but i just read the original script and the reason they had to go to amber/stu’s house was because amber had tara’s dad’s necklace. personally i like the original script better but i still love this movie!!

This movie made me questioned the groans. The person Dewey was fighting had a male groan but we know it to be Amber. Mindy isn’t nearly as bright as she thinks she is. I was not even remotely surprised especially with Amber. This movies killers were as obvious as Scream 4 & 6 to me

I read that they shot Skeet on a green screen but had them act to each other and that they “de-aged him slightly”. Also my theory for why she might see him in his bloody shirt without having ever met him is maybe just the info she knows from the first stab movie.

Dead ass Amber killed literally everyone. She attacks Tera, she kills Vince, she attacks Chad, She attacked Mindy, she kills Dewey. I’m just going to assume that Richie kills Wes and Judy because if he doesn’t then all he does was attack Sam in the hospital . Weak, these killers are probably the worst out of all of them. Still love this movie tho.
@Kam 90 the fact there are so many survivors would say otherwise. I’ll give her credit when it comes to Dewey and the people she killed, but Dewey Be wouldn’t of died if gale didn’t call him, just saying. He could of easily survived if he would of either ignored the call or left with the rest of them.

You called it in your Scream 4 review that Sydney and Gale should use tracking tags and they did just that.
I always thought that the reason Richie and amber always seemed to be going after people they would have needed to survive until the end to frame, was because they weren’t smart killers. I like to think that they were meant to be dumb, and not really ever thinking ahead of what they are currently doing. I also think they would have had a much better chance at getting away with it had they kept Vince alive, and tried to frame both Vince and sam as if they were trying to carry on their family’s legacy’s.

I really enjoyed this movie. My main issue was how little Sidney is in the movie. I get that they are setting up for the future of the franchise but She is one of the Greatest Final Girls in horror films and I've missed her after the 10 year absence. Also, for Scream 6 what do you think about competing killers?
I'm ngl I never noticed Richie's face when they went to see Dewy for the first time.
The idea of Billy having a secret child is absolute genius in my opinion, although I think they should have used like a young actor instead and explained it with like a "recast" in a stab remake in the fake movies timeline or even just voiceover and have him standing there in the ghostface costume which would be more disorienting when Amber or Richie attacks her. Also the plot of fanatics trying to make their own movie/correct/recreate things is so interesting, a good choice.
Little things like Dewey's limp and other inconsistencies could be easily explained in-movie, like he could mention physiotherapy or an injury while on the job could have happened, just little things like that would clear up those details. The gunshots being like bb bullets and the stabs being treated like punches might be meta-commentary on a trope or something but it kind of drains the dark realism that makes the early Screams such classics. If Sam's act of absolutely wrecking Richie had been the only brutal moment it could have been so impactful or even if the rest was toned down a bit it would be more of a standout moment.
Overall I feel like this is so much better than Scream 4, the cast are so so great in this. David Arquette shines particularly as the most featured of the og trio. Even though his death scene, while emotional... could have been done better. Agree that Gail's death would make more sense because of the narrative significance that would have with the plot, if Richie and Amber wanted to correct the Stab series they would take out the person who kind of created it all.
This movie does have the Scream magic to it. So many excellent character exchanges and sequences.

My favorite thing I noticed is that Gail used the same move that Dewey used in the hospital to get Amber off of her, which was a headbutt 🥺
Jenna Ortega being the breakout as just a supportive role is evidence she was always destined to be a star! The way she carried a film she was barely in due to being attacked in the opening is WILD to me!

I genuinely dont think the attackers planed for or even expected Tara to survive the beginning. It makes me wonder about what the plan wouldve been to get Sam to the house at the end though if Tara wasnt there... either way. Love this movie. IF the plan was for her to survive, i just cant even begin to make that make sense. She was brutalized!
Wasn't the point to have it all traced to Sam, but have it end at the house?

that’s the only problem i had with the movie is the inhaler thing, they make her use it so randomly (her cooking for example) us people with asthma don’t use it like that unless we’re actually out of breathe and have trouble breathing

The thing is, I don't think Dewey getting involved directly led to his death, if that makes sense. Given their motive and how deranged Amber in particular was, I have no doubt they would have have targeted him anyway. Just like they did Stu's nephew. I hate that they killed him off, but at least it was how Dewey always should have been killed, helping someone. And not murdered while he was drunk in his trailer or something.

fun fact about the inhaler. in an earlier draft of the script tara and amber are girlfriends and that’s why they stop at amber’s house. tara like gave amber an important necklace or something and goes to get it back/she wants to say goodbye to amber.
so tara being gay was replaced with asthma at some point and that’s why it feels like such a plot device.
As someone whose name is Terra, from the first trailer with that opening scene I had chills. I was shocked and relieved when she survived the opening scene, let alone the whole movie!
ALSO YES DILF DEWEY. I'm sorry I still am not okay with him dying, I'll forever disagree, Dewey and Sid are my heart. If someone original HAD to die, I wish it was Gale 0 but I have to admit I'm the kind of fan who wouldn't mind all of them surviving no matter what, because I'm soft like that. Plot armor? Give me that.
I was kinda disappointed with Wes's death. Judy's was heartwrenching, but Wes didn't even get the chance to defend himself, after how cautious they set him up as. And especially since he's a tribute to Wes Craven, I wish his death scene was a bit more prolonged, give him a bit of fight.
Ok...follow me here: How about a situation where you have a group of people in an isolated location (campground, summer house, etc.) and all of them kill each other in some panic-induced self-defense paranoia, and the real killer orchestrates the whole thing, but never actually kills anyone? That's GOLD!

As a diehard Scream fan and fellow gay, myself. I found this commentary very satisfying because I've been saying the same shit about this movie. It was below average for me overall for a Scream entry. But this commentary is 10/10. I didn't even catch the promotional still they used for Billy on the TV. I was fucking weak when you mentioned it.

One thing you didn't mention. That I thought was odd. What was the point of Amber's expositional story to the Scooby gang if 100% of the people in that scene were in Tara's life her whole life basically and no one knew why Sam ran away? Oh yeah, your sister disappeared at 18 and didn't tell anyone.

I think the reasoning for the Stu erasing is because he was strongly considered to return (Yes, he had a TV dropped on him but it is mentioned later there's doubt) and even had agreed too before changes to the script. So who knows? Scram 7 might bring him back
finally someone who isn't obsessed with Mindy! i felt her character to be too forced. the movie just wanted to set a new Randy instead of coming up with more original characters.
also, I hated how they completely destroyed Dewey's character here. he was a pathetic alcoholic, and I'm pretty sure Wes wouldn't have liked that.

To answer your question about how sam knows what billy looks like.... dude there's books and movies about that night. You think it would be hard for her to google his death and see pics of his body? She ran away from home because of it so why wouldn't she know what he looks like. He changed her life!
Old articles and magazines took pictures of the dead body of billy...Sam saw the pictures (probably from the internet) so she knew how billy looked
I don't mind the Fandom motive, but I have a problem with Amber being the one who "got" Dewey. I also wish that Gale had said "you killed my husband!" instead of "best friend" but again, oh well. Lol I know that they weren't married anymore but they still were in her heart.
I love that Sid and Mark got together but the fact that Neve Campbell played Patrick Dempsey's sister on Grey's Anatomy make it so creepy hahaha

There was a bar fight deleted scene that Vince was involved in before getting killed
I’m a little late on this but that little girl who survived the slender man stabbing was stabbed several dozen times and survived. Given I’m not sure what knife her attackers used, but she was a little girl who survived that shit. If anything, the fact certain victims survived past movies after minuscule attacks are beyond belief (3, Christine, stabbed once in the back once -maybe due to columbine-) (4, Kate, stabbed in the back once through mail slot)

I always assumed Sam had seen Stab and Stab would have shown Billy that way. And crime scene photos because we know from marketing material documentaries with crime scene photos exist.

Honestly I hope they give Ghostface a somewhat different mask the next movies.
Like for instance, I think Ghostface should have a green glow in the dark mask. And then Scream 7 could have Ghostface wearing that old vintage Halloween mask with the horns.
I really think a glow in the dark mask would look very eerie if used well, like having him be in the background of a dark shot and you CAN JUST barely see his mask.
i don't see people talking about it but Dewey called both of the killers in one because I believe amber was Tera's girlfriend.

It also makes sense they would know Charlie more since he and Trevor were the first one's to be named when Jill tried to pin all the killings on them, when Trevor was completely innocent. Also, Charlie could've been more known because he did most of the killings.

So my thought about her knowing how billy looks is simple… crime scene photos. A quick google, you can find photos of how a person looked in their final moments rather easily. Even cases before the 90s.
