    In my view one of the most underrated drives by Senna. Not because of his wheel-to-wheel fight with Mansell, but how he achieved to get in that position. After an awesome first lap which not only saw him overtake Patrese but also put Mansell under pressure as well, he slipped back quite a lot - to not destroy his tyres prematurely. During the mid-phase of the race he showed extraordinary speed and kept the gap at ~20 sec.. Even a ten second delay due to Alboreto spinning couldn't prevent him from taking top spot during Mansells unscheduled pitstop.

    One race in Monaco to rule them all: 1984: in the pouring rain, everybody was driving very carefully but in the midst of all those drivers was a new rookie, called Ayrton Senna, driving for Toleman Hart; a low raked team (compare it as the Marussia of that era). He was not driving carefully, instead he was driving faster and faster, lapping driver after driver and ended up chasing the great Alain Prost, the by then race leader but the race was later stopped by the course director (Jacki ickx) because it was to unsafe to continue and so the drivers where awarded half points. A great feat of Ayrton driving skills but he felt that he was robbed of a great finish if he was allowed to continue racing.

    • @TheColinChapman
      @TheColinChapman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      MK3424 I tend to disagree. firstly, The 1984 Toleman was not the Marussia of the 1984 season. in 1984, the Toleman team finished 7th (out of 15 teams) in the constructor's championship, the year before and the year after, they finished 9th. so the Toleman more or less was the Force India or the Toro Rosso of the turbo era. secondly, the toleman mechanics later revealed that Ayrton had damaged his front wheel suspension, he probably would have been forced to retire if the race had not been stopped. the read flag did not steal him a victory, it saved him a second place. thirdly, the 'real' Manor of the 80ies era was the Tyrrell that was driven by Stefan Bellof. in the final stages of the race, Ayrton lapped four seconds faster than Prost, and Stefan was lapping even faster than Senna.

      Everyone forgets the monsoon in '72, which gave one of the sport's freak results. The wet-weather maestro then was Jacky Ickx, however, Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the BRM walked the race from pole. In the early stages everyone put it down to clear vision, but when he met the back markers, his driving and overtaking were absolutely first-rate. Beltoise's one and only GP victory...

      @leandrodavila5975 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm Ayrton's fan , I'm brazilian, but I have to admit that he probably wouldn't win that race. In fact, his front suspension was damaged by a mistake he made in the first corner at the exit of the tunnel as he was trying to overtake Lauda. Maybe he could keep the pace for just a few laps before leave the race . And Prost wouldn't let him easily take the lead if the race continued.

      In my opinion, the way pilots are being drafted these days is a much greater problem. Some really good drivers don't even make it into the sport because of lack of sponsorship, while others drive for many years because their country can support them.

    • @juandef4115

      +Alex San Lyra the drivers always been drafted like that. that has never changed. if you watch an interview of Senna. Senna makes the statement saying he raced go karts, one british driver was the best driver he had ever drove against. the driver had no money to progress through to formula one basically. Formula one is boring now, its not evolution to offer kers... its pathetic

      juan def True. I actually remember that exact interview. But I think it's much worse now. These days, it's hard to name a single driver who's in the grid based on talent alone... Fernando Alonso maybe. For example, I love Lewis Hamilton, but he made his debut in a McLaren... just because he is british. And that's to say nothing about drivers like Maldonado, Grosjean and Rosberg.

    How to improve F1 :
    - 900+ BHP V8-V12 ( Engine Varieties )
    - The huge 2017 tires
    - The old pre-2009 wing so the car wont lose the back end in dirty air
    - Turn off driver aids
    - Manual gearbox
    - No DRS ( to make the overtakes have some quality )
    - Change the asphalt runoff's where track limits is strict to Gravel traps so no one dares to go off track
    - Isntant DSQ if a team finds a loophole in the rules like Brawn with double diffuser

    • @mrgobrien
      @mrgobrien 7 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      I don't think it is just that actually - Michael Schumacher began emerging from his car in that same era and looked ok ("If he emerges from his car without a bead of sweat on him again I'll personally go across and slap him" - Martin Brundle). People realised it was his much greater fitness, and so drivers began to train much more - today that and the easier cars both make drivers emerge at the end looking fresh. Niki Lauda once said modern cars were too easy to drive - so they stuck him in one to see - he spun it. Compare the lap time in this era in Monaco (about 1 minute 26?) with now (about 10 seconds faster?) The small circuit changes at Monaco wouldn't explain that by themselves yet the drivers still look ok at the end - it is both better fitness and technology.

      as you can see here, races do not neccessarily get 'better' with more position changes. trying to hunt down the car in front for several laps can be entertaining, too. I am highly convinced that if a race like the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix happened again, everybody would now say "how booooring - no overtaking". plus, I am also convinced that in 2030 everyone will say "do you remember the good old days of 2016?" - the good old were never as good as they now seem. Milan Kundera once wrote, in the disillusion of sunset everything shines in the aura of nostalgia - even the guillotine.

    What you failed to mention was that in the season of 1992 the Williams driven by Mansell was a far superior car than all of the others.
    There was no real competition.
    Williams had active suspension and traction control systems beyond anything available to the other teams.
    That technology represented the arrival of a new world, where the power of the engines was not a car's best asset.
    On top of that, 1992 was the fisrt year McLaren did'nt run with the famous winning Honda engines.
    This information is vital for the full comprehension and appreciation of that race.
    Note: Senna did not have a competitive car. What he accomplished that day was far beyond the effort Mansell put in trying to overtake him. That's why Senna won. He's the better driver.
