Where I live, code allows up to 3 layers of 3 tab shingles! If the roof structure is sound and can carry the load. 2 layers on a roof is very common in our state.
Nice looking roof....In regards to comments below, Not doing a cover-over is a waste! I always encourage re-covers to my customers if the original layer allows. Manufacturers approve and also allowed by building codes. Also, the additional felt helps reduce/eliminate line anti-liaising.
I have a 20 yr old ranch. 4/12 pitch. Attached garage. Three pipe protrusions and one section of roof to wall over the front of my garage (because it isn't as deep as the house. So there are three separate sections. Three tabs. Shingles are fine but south side is more weathered than the north. I had a tree branch hit my roof. Made a claim. They paid for half a roof replacement. Trying to get the whole one done for the same price. If I do a lay over, I can do it.. So my question to you, is can you tell me the best process to do a layover. In your opinion with your knowledge of the trade. I'm going to use atlas pinnacle pristine shingles, new ridge vent and ridge cap shingles, new flashing boots for the plumbing vents. The guy that I am thinking of hiring (he's insured but not a licensed builder), said that the b vent flashing for the furnace vent shouldn't need to be replaced but he would lift it on the bottom side and tuck new shingles under it so that it sheds water as it should. My question is, should I buy new drip edge that will go over my current drip edge and be nailed to the top of the current shingles (which hides the first layer), or should we just lay shingles directly over the three tabs and maybe use some sealant under the far edges to prevent wind blowoff? Atlas says you can maintain warranty with a lay over so long as you install #30 felt over the old shingles. Is that really necessary? Also what do you do to prepare the eaves? Do you cut off a row or two of the old shingles at the eave so the new shingles lay flatter? Or is all that just too much hassle and just lay new over old and call it good so long as the flashings are installed correctly and the ridge vent and cap shingles are done right? Any guidance would be appreciated.
No shingle manufacturer will warranty a roof with adding a 2nd layer on top of a existing layer. For this reason we have never done installed shingles onto of existing shingles. It's even a worse idea if your going back with a architectural shingle
question, on re-roofs, can you leave the existing drip edge on and just start your starter? since it is already nailed down to the deck and protecting it. Thanks
TEX SUN ...the roofing code says: any roofing nail should penetrate into the existing sheathing at least 3/4 of an inch. except on the exposed eaves and gables
Regardin the comment at the very end: Can't you look in the attic to see if there's any damaged wood? Perhaps that's not 100% either, but it would usually alert you to badly damaged decking.
Also the comment at the end you said, this has 3 layer something, it should be ok.....??? Could you elaborate??? I couldn't make what you said your last 7 words of the video
This has been a common practice f-o-r-e-v-e-r. However, there can be some nuances depending on dead and live loads. Where you live (weather) and how the roof framing was done. The crap house I'm at now is owner builder and the framing and sheathing were -- bare minimum. The thin osb has soft spots and framing is spaced to the max. It is cheaper to recover a roof so people do it. Some inexperienced people actually like a second layer. Or, there are weather and time issues. they are not exposed nails , it's caulking , someone step over fresh caulking and walked around the area and left small white marks on the roof. I like some of your videos but this is wrong. There is no proper way to shingle over because you should NEVER do this or tell people that it is acceptable. I have heard opinions both ways on the technical side. However, almost every insurance company is now refusing to cover a property with 2 layers.
I’ve heard 3 max, but when I roofed in my teens, we would always remove the whole roof. I never knew this was an option until a few days ago, haha. I can see this being cheaper. And probably less chance of a leak from a double layered roof. The down side is if there is damaged wood. Damaged wood could be seen from inside the attic, even if you had insulation I imagine you would have some sort of water markings. I mean I had to go somewhere.
Two layers of shingles are code approved. More than 2 is frowned upon. If code allows for 2 layers of shingles, the insurance has to cover it. I've never heard of an insurance company not covering two layers of shingles.
It doesn't matter what his reasons. Still a waste of money it serves no purpose being there. The first layer of shingles are doing the moisture barrier, that's all underlayment is for
i dont like second layer of asphalt,, prefer metal, f-wave roof put pollution in dallas tx black mountain n other areas , rejected to be recycle or properly dispose causing extra money for disposal outside to another county, inflation for tear off due to inflation on dumpster, dumping, fuel, fees cost, to dump, rejected at the recycling center, illegal dumping ,fines if caught,
why would you put underlayment over existing shingles? the only purpose underlayment serves is to keep the plywood dry until you install shingles. also you can use the existing shingles as a guide to lay the new shingles. youre using architectural shingles which are 5 1/2 inch exposure to 5 5/8 exposure over 3 tabs which are 5" exposure so youre going to have a minimum 1/2 extra coverage on every course. i think you need to get certified by a manufacturer because you have a lot to learn. roofing for 5 years makes you an experienced helper, not an experienced roofer.
Jimmy world underlayment is a moisture barrier and the manufacturer won’t guarantee the product without it. Also, if you’re still groundman after five years, I’d look for a different job.
Underlayment over existing shingles is actually recommended. Especially if you're doing a roof recover and there are small leaks with no water damage underneath.
