    I still love rewatching this video. This video is how I found the channel, back when I was researching the Bulldog a year or two ago. I still enjoy it today. This summer I am falling in love with my bulldog again. I purchased an extended reservoir, a regulator, barrel stabilizer set, upgraded hammer spring, cocking lever, and threaded barrel end adapter for a Donny FL moderator, all from Pitbull Airguns. Looking forward to tuning it up and seeing what it will do!

    I grew up having bb guns and pellet guns. I started with the old Daisey lever action bb gun that you poured bb's down the barrel. When I got older I bought a Crossman 760 pump gun and hunted the woods like crazy shooting squirrels. My friend and I would shoot a squirrel, clean it, build a small fire and cook it, eat it and then go hunt for another one.
    We would set up plastic army men, old model cars or whatever we could find to use as targets and would pass hours shooting our guns.
    Many years later after growing up, getting married and having kids of my own I bought a new Crossman 760 and started shooting again for awhile, would loose interest or get busy with other things and then get interested again.
    I bought a Beeman break barrel .177 rifle to add to my Crossman but both guns are small and I feel that they are really a young shooters gun So I just recently bought a Gamo Swarm Whisper .22 caliber.
    I wanted something that I could shoot pests with but also something that I can just shoot at targets, tin cans or whatever in my backyard. I started watching videos on TH-cam to gain some knowledge and have come across a few that were informative and seem to be made by people that have the knowledge and I've seen some that were made by someone that I will take there advice with a grain of salt. You, Sir, fall into the first category.
    I've watch 4 of your videos so far. I watched the first three yesterday while on breaks at work. Today I subscribed and wanted to start at the first video and work my way to the most current. I like your presentation style. You have the knowledge but what really sold me was watching a video yesterday where you were thinking about things in your past while hunting and your faith came through.
    I hope to learn about airguns from your videos (I already am) but I also hope to learn more than that from you (I'm sure I will). Thank you for your service Sir.

      John Ragan ... so very glad to hear from you .... Congratulations on the 21 years ... Your medical experience will serve you well over the years to come......The jungles of Vietnam were enough of a combat tour for me ... I was shot three times in one year...and still carry a bullet in my left arm that they didn't want to take out ... they said it somehow slipped thru the shoulder muscles and right up next to the bone ... and that they would have done more damage retrieving it ...so left it in and sewed me back up. They advised me to Xray it once a year to see that it wasn't moving ... especially towards the heart ... but some scar tissue wrapped around it and made a permanent connection to the bone... never had a problem or pain from it. I was a young Infantry Officer and went right back into battle and my men. John, you are getting into a great hobby... consider a small compressor ... or aqua lung tank ... or that hand pump will tire you of this sport in a hurry. Try several pellets ... especially heavy ones to slow the velocity down. Remember that high velocity will not provide the accuracy you want. Also, click onto the small round photo of myself to access all 40 videos done to date... watch the one on accuracy and the two on pellets... also watch the one on Woodchucks to find out how much fun this sport can be. Please keep us in your air gun experience loop ... so that you can help us .... help everyone to stay air gun sharp.... Dr. Russ

      @@russelljones4132 thank you Sir, one of my uncles were Force Recon in the Marines with tours in Vietnam and another was Army over there who doesn’t talk much about it but, he was one of the few that sent letters there to check in on me when I was with the Infantry and I’m sure you know how important that is to a deployed Soldier. Last tour I was E-6 but only ever made it to E-7 before retiring but still talk with a few of my amazing Officers, as I’m sure you are aware, there are those Officers that know everything and there are those that share their information and take the time to listen to their Enlisted and those Officers hold a special place in an Enlisted man’s heart, you are obviously the latter and we were proud to follow you into battle Sir. Thank you for paving the way for us! I was lucky enough to not be shot but was in fire fights and IED blasts, I’ve had the collapse of a lung, and multiple surgeries repairing things that still aren’t repaired and like you was just looking for peace which luckily I have found in my children (3 boys, 1 girl), my 5 year old daughter is the only one who loves shooting my .308 AR-10 but it wears her out so I thought this would be awesome to get her into. I have two scuba tanks from my Father and one small Benjamin tank arriving with the rifle tomorrow. I am currently reading up on compressors. Your knowledge is GREATLY appreciated and have been my deciding factor on multiple situations. I will keep you posted as I learn and if there is anything i can help with I will be happy to do my part! Also being retired and 100% I wanted to continue working with Veterans, so I am also employed with the VA, I also have a person that is assigned to help me with questions and issues that arrive in life beings the amount of things that happened in combat so if there are any questions or situations I can help with please don’t hesitate to ask, I’d be happy to help out with anything I can Sir. God bless and thank you!

    Always happy to help a fellow vet. Absolutely yes, we need more air gunners and air gun clubs.. I often ask my friends how much shooting they do at their house. None, it's too noisy, too
    dangerous. My trigger time is 2-300 shots a day and now with my remote light switch, at night too.
    I got a pair of pet crows, they seem to help keep big flocks away so I protect em. Kind of symbiotic relation, but got plenty other critters for lead. Really fun for an old guy☺.
    Keep em comin.

      Thanks again for getting back to me Will Willis. Those two pet crows have me intrigued ... do they stay at your home in a cage until needed? I use to shoot 900 to 1000 rounds of 45 caliber and 9 mm per week to stay prepared for competitive shoots with hand guns... I also use to reload them myself, until it just got to be too big of a time issue. I still shoot 100 to 200 rounds of pellets and slugs a week to stay prepared for my TH-cam Videos. I also have a movement sensor light in back that allows me to shoot effectively at night. Always good to hear from you Will.... Dr. Russ

      Glad to hear that Jeremy... your first impression will be much louder... not only the ping in your ear... but the bang out your barrel... so if you are hunting outdoors...this big bore air rifle is a fraction of the sound of a powder rifle.... but probably too loud for backyard friendly if neighbors near by..... consider the larger sound suppressor from Pit Bull vs regular size if true. Also start with 35 cal. Pellets vs 9 mm bullets and only those that are 100% lead vs copper plated. Your barrel and its rifling will wear out with copper. We are currently filming our second set of 6 videos... keep me informed on what you want to see or know. This air rifle would do well with smaller and larger calibers than just 357 magnum. Of course owning several air rifles in the maximum caliber that each is available in ... has been my personal course. I also check for the best reviews and top sellers within a caliber. There are several air rifles that allow multiple barrel set ups... but their cost saving isn't great.... and they require different scope or fixed site adjustments once changed ... as well as the time required to switch. Dr. Russ

  • @Wyldman47

    Russ what’s your favorite brand of round for the bulldog? And did I hear you correctly that you like 9mm sized rounds the best for this gun? Thx

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matt Rohrmann ... good to hear from you. You will find that any slugs for 357 magnum powder guns will often get stuck in the barrel... requiring a cleaning rod to dislodge...but the 9mm or 35 caliber slugs (same size) work great.... I believe Benjamin mislabeled that caliber because the 357 magnum has a great reputation. Hatsan did the same... both shoot 35 slugs. As far as weight of the slug is concerned... you will need to try several to determine the best accuracy for your gun. Assuming all are equally accurate... you will want to use the lighter weight for target or longer distant shooting and the heavier for deer and wild boar hunting... Dr. Russ

      Good to hear from you VaccaroAssociates Sales.... The barrels in air guns are not even close to the barrels in powder rifles.... often not much more than a straw or brake line in thickness.... jacketed bullets wear it out quickly ... and often get stuck in the barrel as the rifling cuts into the copper and the push of air isnt close to the push of powder... Your gun will last longer with just lead ammo... Dr. Russ

      Yes Gina Hardee and it quiets it enough to make it backyard friendly in my backyard... keep in mind that once you dont have a backyard friendly air gun,... you have a noisy air gun ... especially 30 caliber and up ... and so you are limited to hunting a few times a year ... and limited to your states hunting rules with air guns.... Cool stuff, how well is the moderator on the gun holding up? Which version did you purchase?

    • @russjones7981
      @russjones7981 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own 2 moderators for my 357 mags ... I recently purchased a sound detector that I have not used and plan a video on this subject .... for the moment I can say that on 30 calibers or higher you will need a moderator to keep the gun back yard friendly and unfortunately larger calibers require larger moderators that cost $350 or more... by the time you also include their parts... that are required by your barrel for an add on... pitbull provided my Bull dog moderator and looks like an extension of the rifle..... Ronin made the moderator for my Hatsan Bully... and looks like a large silencer on the barrel... both made each rifle longer and heavier.. perhaps too heavy for a long walk in the woods. Dr. Russ

Regardless of whether you are using a hand pump ... scuba tank ... or a compressor... you want to put the hose with a female end on it up to the male fill probe found at the bottom of the rear stock ... it may have a plastic cover which can come off easily ... once the fill hose is on correctly, fill it up to about 3000 foot lbs of air... Hey Russ, Thanks for the video..
    I have the Bulldog, and Love it!,BUT, its loud out the box.measured with my DM 132 decibels.
    I can shoot this in my backyard with the neighbors knowing it's me, Soo, I want to know,? ,how long you had the long pitbull moderator and how much you like and would recommend.
    I'm bouncing between the DonnyFL Ronin and the long pitbull moderator.
    My problems are, the additional length of each.Then the plastic verses the aluminium.
    What your thoughts???
    Marty

    • @russjones7981
      @russjones7981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marty...I have loved the extended moderator versus the standard moderator ... both available from Pit Bull... I bought the long one after talking to the owner of Pit Bull... and following his recommendation for the longer one. Donnie makes excellent moderators too. My Bull Dog is probably my quietest PCP... so I couldn't be happier. I try to buy the best in moderators because the last thing any of us needs is a police complaint from a neighbor.

    • @russjones7981
      @russjones7981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe plastic is a more quiet material than aluminum.

    • @russjones7981
      @russjones7981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Martin... I have two moderators...in addition to what comes with the air rifles... and interesting for your question...I have 2 moderators...the first... a Pit Bull extended for my Bull Dog and the 2nd ... a Donniefl Emperor for my Hatsan Hercules Bully in 357 cal. Both do the job equally on these two big bores. Both cost similar amounts. The Pit Bull moderator comes with some extra barrel stabilizers which I believe were helpful....
      The Bully will be highlighted in my second batch of 6 videos... the Emperor is the best that Donniefl offers... however... they offer an additional piece called AN Extender if noise is still an issue... but that sure makes for a long air rifle...
      Fortunately... the 25 cal and lower caliber air rifles seem quiet enough for me out of the box. Dr. Russ

    Can you shoot the jacketed 9mm bullets out of this gun?

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good to hear from you Leonardokite ... My experience has been horrible with copper jacketed bullets ... that copper is much tougher than lead and can either get stuck in your barrel or wear the rifling out much sooner than normal.... I also stay clear of hollow heads ...which are excellent in powder pistols with velocities over 1200 feet per second ... but inaccurate in pellet rifles where velocities are under 1100 fps. Dr. Russ

    • @Leonardokite
      @Leonardokite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@drsrussandpaula thanks for the info sir. After I made that comment, I saw a video where a guy shot copper jacketed bullets out of his air gun and the chronograph showed a much slower velocity. Probably sub slingshot velocity LOL. And of course in the comments were tons of people saying basically the same thing that you just said. I will keep my copper jacketed bullets for there intended purpose and use only lead bullets. I have a bulldog coming at the end of next week. My first PCP air rifle. I am looking forward to it.

    Will it shoot 9mm FMJ?

    • @russjones7981
      @russjones7981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ramos... good question...the Bull Dog manual for 357 mag ..or 9 mm.... says not to use copper jacket. I have used a few ... but I believe Benjamin doesn't want copper going down that barrel... I am going to guess that copper doesn't seal the air behind it as well as lead does. My second guess is that copper ..or brass might wear out the rifling faster than lead. Dr. Russ

    but will a stock bulldog take down a nice deer?

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is good to hear from you Shon Sherwood. .. Yes the Bulldog can and just about every 357 (really 35 caliber) air rifles out there. while most deer guns are actually shooting a 30 caliber slug (30 - 06 ...30 -30 ... 308 ... 300 winchester mag ... etc) they shoot at 2000 to 3200 fps, most 30 to 35 caliber air guns only shoot at 800 to 900 fps.... so you have to concentrate on three concerns. Bigger air rifles (40 to 50 caliber) will knock down deer like the powder guns do ... but deer like to get back up and run off ... able to over come their wound or dying due to a bad tracker. So here are the three concerns. 1.) you are not going to be able to hunt deer out beyond 75 yards due to the lower air power and speed. So use good camo ... downwind ... and scents. Perhaps bait if it is allowed in your area. 2.) you want to be very accurate ... placing your heavy pellet or slug in the killing zone, which includes the organs or head (forget about mounting a deer with a head shot) ... and 3.) you want to use a hunter point on the pellet or slug that will allow a pass thru ... which provides two holes for blood to exit. These 3 concerns are challenges. I don't believe larger calibers will improve your chances and may be detriments to two of the three challenges above that I have experienced. Consider watching my video on Accuracy as well as practice often. Please keep me in your loop of air gun experiences... Dr. Russ

      Terry ... it is good to hear from you and thanks for your feed back. Air guns are made in a variety of styles ... rifles with wood stocks ... rifles with polyurethane stocks ... Bull Pups ,,, Break barrels ... and Sci-FY like the one I used in making this video. It was the only air gun at the time that shot the 357 magnum ... Interestingly ... if you have to do a repair or want to add a modification ... once the plastic is pulled away, it resembles all of the rest. Bottom line is ... different strokes for different folks .... and now it is offered in 457 caliber too. It doesn't seem to go away, so there obviously is a lot of Sci-FY shooters out there...
