Wiring Ignition Coils - GS550 Custom Cafe Racer Build (Part 71)

  • Urban Monk details the wiring of the ignition coils on his 1978 Suzuki GS550 custom cafe racer build project. Wiring a vintage motorcycle seems daunting to many, but with a clear wiring diagram it is much simpler than you might think. Custom motorcycle builds require a little creativity to take what is given and adapt it to one's vision.

    Truly amazing at showing and explaining properly for the guys like me just switching from riding to building a bike. An inspiration. Thank you so much for all your time and hard work. You are half the reason why I'm building my first cafe!

      Thanks for watching. Not that I've come across. However, UJM bikes are pretty simple electrical systems and quite "standardized" (except for maybe wire color choices). A universal custom motorcycle wiring kit could work just fine in most cases. Like amzn.to/405lK0M

    Good job. I hate electrics :D My baby was running quite bad. After too much trail and error, found out it was a bad coil. Curious about the first start :)

    Great video. I still have my old ones that worked about a years and a half ago but I got two new ignition coils for my 1983 GS1100G. How would one go about identifying left from right ignition coils?

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Really doesn't matter. Just need to follow wiring diagram to determine which hot wire pulses 1&4 coil and which pulses 2/3 coil (assuming its a wasted spark system like my 78). Does that help?

    hey, is there anywhere I could buy those ignition coils mounting brackets? I am using aftermarket coils from eBay and they don't fit the holes that are already provided on the frame.

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I'd guess those would be difficult to source. Most builders would modify using mild steel and a welder. Nothing fancy required.

    Hey I'm working on getting an '80 gs 750L going and ordered the wrong coils off ebay. On the bike are 029700 denso and I bought some 129700... Are they compatable? The coils on the bike have been hardwired so I cant use the quick connects to give me any clue... Thanks!

    • @UrbanMonkTV
      @UrbanMonkTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm having trouble looking those up by the denso part number as the Internet is loaded with automotive Denso coil packs that begin with the same number. That said, if they are two wire coils they'll most likely work. Otherwise eBay has many aftermarket replacements with two spark plug leads that will work. I just searched the suzuki part number 33410-45110
      And they come up. Around US$20. Hope that helps.

    On a dual, wasted spark ignition coil, it should not be necessary to ground the coil, as the primary (low tension) winding goes to ground through the points, and both poles of the secondary (high tension) winding go to ground through the spark plugs.
