IN MOTIVE // BIO
Motive predicates action. It drives us to grow, change, and create as a species. It also unites us around a common goal. For the members of IN MOTIVE-Devin Barrus [vocals], Lee McKinney [guitar], Nick Rossi [guitar], and Conor White [drums]-music remains the ultimate motivation.
Quietly coming to life in secret over the course of 2016, they rallied around a singular sonic vision…
“Motive is to have a purpose. It’s what you want in life. At the same time, it’s a double entendre, because a motive is also a melodic idea that makes you feel something. For us, it all means looking forward.” Says Nick Rossi.
“This band is our motive,” agrees Conor. “It’s everything we’ve pushed for.”
The guys began working towards this in late 2015. Long time friends Nick (ex-City in the Sea) and Lee (Born of Osiris) found themselves both deep in writing mode for a new musical outlet. With a similar sound and goal in mind, they decided to collaborate. Conor also joined the fold, and the trio recorded multiple tracks with mutual producer Nick Sampson. They uploaded one of the instrumental tracks on the Sumerian Records TH-cam channel to see who would interlock seamlessly as a vocalist. As the clip quickly cracked 140K views, one vocalist in particular stood out.
“Devin’s voice was the perfect contrast to the instrumentation,” continues Conor. “It was a subconscious thing. We just knew he would fit.”
“He brought in a unique element that we never expected,” adds Nick. “We wanted a singer whose voice you could identify with the band right off the bat. He was the best fit we could’ve ever found. Moreover, he felt the music the way we did.”
Without telling a soul, the group finished tracking the collection of songs with Sampson in Michigan before heading to Bakersfield, CA to track vocals with none other than hard rock legend Jonathan Davis of Korn. Both producers pushed In Motive to bend and break boundaries.
“We’re super comfortable with Nick Sampson,” says Nick Rossi. “He’s really tight with us and even played bass on the record. We’re all Korn fans, and working with Jonathan was just incredible. To be able to hang with him and get insights into what he’s seen throughout his years in the industry and hear his opinion on our songs was unbelievable. He took our vision and helped us get to where we need to be.”
As a result, the quartet crafts a sound that ebbs and flows between progressive metallic intricacy and alternative infectiousness careening through a space of tight guitar-craft and off-time rhythms. That initial TH-cam video turned into “The Disconnect” powered by warm tones and an unforgettable refrain.
Meanwhile, the first single “Revival” builds from intergalactic six-string soundscapes into an entrancing chant punctuated by falsetto and fire.
“I just want to give people something real,” Nick leaves off. “This is who we are. It’s our motive. It’s our life.”
THE DISCONNECT // LYRICS
Are we all alone lost in an ocean?
Do we feel at home adrift from the shoreline?
Somewhere deep beneath the surface hoping to be heard
Calling out for retribution drowning in our words
Oh will you follow me through the disconnect now all that I can see is emptiness
They're staring back at me through the disconnect
Oh will you follow me when we're all that's left
There's nothing left
You keep it on the inside buried below
A void beneath the surface you'll never know
Drifting from the shoreline cry out for help
I can't seem to find you till you find yourself
Are we all alone , we are not alone
Are we all alone lost in an ocean
Somewhere deep below hoping to be heard
calling out for retribution drowning in our words

Lyrics:
Swiftly, it starts
Impulses driving me so far astray
I feel a part
Of myself expire, wither away
Carry the spark
Or smother it, and lose your grip
Left with a mark, a dream of a star
This isn’t my reality
This is my holding out for something greater
I never knew vitality
A soul that wanders, lost within a song
Take me
To a better place, where I’ll embrace
The soul inside of me
Calm, at peace
Far beyond this mess my mind can rest
The current carries me along
A force that pushes me on
A voice that calls from afar
Still searching for my family
Nostalgic spirits coming back to life
Demons of old, abandon me
No longer letting fear block me from the light
Song, take me
To a better place, where I’ll embrace
The soul inside of me
Calm, at peace
Far beyond this mess my mind can rest
The current carries me along
A storm that I cannot ignore
Ravages me beyond the shore
Some force I’ve never felt before
Beckoning me to venture forth
Current, carry me on
Voices call from afar
Now the line has been drawn, reluctance is gone
Carry me on
Song, take me
To a better place, where I’ll embrace
A soul that sets me free
Calm, at peace
Far beyond this mess my mind can rest
The current carries me along
The lyrics is Andy's version

@@Thobbit8 the singer who won the contest left last year. you stan no one
@@Thobbit8 mOre liKE yAwN
Seriously. I hate to be this person. I really do. The music is awesome and you went with an amazing vocalist. And the melody is PHENOMENAL!! But serously goddamnit why did you not pick Andy!? Fuck this i'm going to bed and listen to andy's version.
Check out Andy's band Makari. They're amazing
This guys vocals are way better than the Andy guys. Andy sounds good when he sings high but hes not good in his lower register
Christopher Martlin When do either of these guys sing low for this song? I’m confused
@@bcarp3 low is relative. so the lower notes
Can't we just agree both versions were really good?
This definitely isn't bad, but I cant unhear Andy's version.
No it doesn't
@Travis Field Lol wrong
@Travis Field I dont agree at all. I didnt think Hungry lights was really that good at all. Maybe some people liked it, but I cringed a bit watching some of it
@Travis Field Hmm, interesting.
Yes I'll look more into him!
SSAKHFHXGS
I've heard Andy Cizek version so many times, that this one sounds weird to me. :/
Yeah, been waiting for CAAAHLM for the entire song. Still great though.
I'm so upset he didn't win. Everyone should go check out his band, wvnder if you haven't though. Definitely one of my favourite bands.
Sammmee xc
David Castillo Pérez right Lol
Andy's version just had so much more emotion in the melody, but honestly I'm glad he wasn't chosen because now he's making THE DOPEST MUSIC with Monuments
I believe that if the band preferred Devins style then good for them and doing what they wanted. At the same time Andys audition has half a million views and this has 70 thousand. Weird.
sunny leatham close to a mil now 😱
Yeah they really fucked up
Andy passed 1 mil now. I do wonder how many of the people who watched this version came from Andy's version to compare. In some ways, Andy may be responsible for this version's view count, which is strange to think about.
@@hanksilman4016 I literally am the example. Never even knew this audition was a thing. Heard Andy's first in recommendation. Then saw it was a contest. Wanted to hear who won. This guy doesn't sound bad. But damn, Andy made it really hard to hear anything but his version. An apparently this vocalist left. So it's weird after all that. But Andy is in like 3 bands now so it works out regardless.
Shawn Mitchell Sunsleep, Denis’/guy who left’s band is good too. It suits him very well in my opinion. He was never not good.
I don’t know why, but this song fills me with such a pure feeling of nostalgia. It brings up memories of a simpler time. Love this.
I get that same nostalgic feeling too!
Same
Bring back Andy Cizek.
Literally every comment is about how Andy was better. From a business perspective, Sumerian really screwed up.
rapdracula couldn't agree more
Yea Sumerian messed up bad
I like more Devin's version 🤷🏻♂️
Sumerian picked the better singer hands down
@@cjmllvv he left the band 🤷♂️
The vocalist was not a bad pick, but when the chorus kicks in it just lags power and energy, man andy handled that so well ...
I think they wanted this lack of power...
Hungry Lights' had the most power in the chorus for sure, Andy's was also great though.
Andy Cizek owns this track.
He literally doesn't lmao
@@Pughhead He literally does, lmao
@@CMDninjas He lost the competition.. and so he didn't get into the band... so he doesn't...
@@Pughhead just because the record label chose him, does not mean he didn't win the public vote. He still owns this track
@@CMDninjas Sure, that's how it works...
i love andy cizek's version
I like Andy’s version as well. This guys voice gives me goosebumps
The Current carries me along :-)
Where is andy?
Eh I'm gonna go listen to Andy's version now... it's a shame because Lee is such a beast guitarist. Would've been a cool partnership
Mom : What are u doing ?
Me : Watching the Picture
Mom: Can I watch with you?
Kid: Mom what are you doing?
Mom: Nothing, just watching Andy Cizek kill some audition tape for some band... I bet he wins...
Kid: 😓
If you guys can’t get that impact that his first line had, you’re insane. There were a lot of great auditions, but Devin’s was by far the best. That first line sent chills through my spine and was perfect for this song. I think he fits great and I am excited to hear more from these guys!
Man really wanted, Andy Cizek to get this gig. Feelsbadman
IgniteRespire22 well he's got the mecari gig now so its fine
Hungry Lights: best version ❤️
Congrats to Devin, great singer. But Andy Cizek is outstanding and should have won the contest.
Sky land difference between Devin and Andy
yeah no I don't want finn the human yelling in my ear. yelling in a high pitch doesn't mean you're some great singer
@@evancobb2554 Your estimation is that Andy isn't a great singer? That really says it all, man.
Bingo.
Yea, Devin is really really good.....but Andy Cizek murked it! What happened?
4 years have passed, still can't get over the fact that Andy wasn't picked
that lyrics... so emotional
Finally! Where's andy tho....
Hungry Lights version tho... Needless...
Andy fucking killed this track, this guy blows in comparison.
0:18 it was at this moment that I knew they fucked up
Swiftly it did not start
Rofl, took me a second to catch that one, you damn right though
I love this version. The singer is clearly talented with writing lyrics. And the way he sings brings so much dynamic to the song
Andy Cizek had so much love and passion that I am not hearing here. (as good as this is) Andy really killed it. He felt this. He oozed with desire and drive. Sumerian is great, and I support this, but Andy should have had this one. Nothing against the vocalist who made it.
Let's get an Andy Cizek feature for the Deluxe Edition of the album. There's already a fan made mashup of the two entries and at the 2:46 mark it's fucking magical.
3 years later and the Hungry Lights version is still wayyyyy better
Sounds like everything else that has been released under Sumerian for the past decade
Someone made a video where Devin and Andy sing at the same time and its actually pretty awesome.

The best version of this song is when Andy and Devin are perfectly in sync. 😢 It was beautiful!
I like how he actually belts out one of the "disconnects" instead of going falsetto like in the audition. Good choice.
The vocal melodies are perfection.
Such a shame Andy didn't get the nod... but still a great track.
Andys vocals sounded great but this is such an original sound. Love all the falseto parts
The band chose the voice they believed fit the sound they wanted more. I'm glad to hear what THEY wanted us to hear. not what everyone else wanted.
Maybe I'm lucky to have not heard this other version I've seen in the comments, because when this version came on my spotify I was hooked. I love everything about it. Kind of a bummer to see how many dont like it because they want someone else singing. Let's just enjoy it, eh?
Its 2019 & I still listen to the OG version of this song, Andy Cizek
Andy's video got more views than the original. This sounds weird a bit after listening Andy's one.
Nice but to be honest, Andy should have won!
Devin was definitely very very good but I still like Andy's better
Nothing makes me happier than Andy's video having more views than this.
I enjoy this alot! good job!
Meh, Andy Cizek version is way better
Incredible voice.
This is literally one of my top songs!
If Andy cizek aint the one on vocals I honestly would rather only have the instrumental.
@Just Some Guy without a Mustache TY.
I have Andy's version in my cars playlist, sorry to say it is the only way i can listen to this track
Tamina's World saaaame. &I still blare it here and there. He made the song a legend. Goosebumps every time. “CAAALLLLM~taaake meeee~
I think we can all come to the understanding that Andy owns this track alone.
I'M SO FRUSTRATED ABOUT ANDY, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAAAAY NONONONNONNONONONONONONO
Deff like devin on this he stands out
such nice lyrics..melody..vocals..its just amazing
Devin was amazing for this 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 I literally wanted so much to sing for this track, and as I was in the process of writing lyrics, I couldn’t get his voice or lyrics out of my head, and his voice and style just fit so perfect with the track. It sounded like he was already part of the band. He was meant for this project. 🖤🖤🖤🎵🎶 Sumerian & In Motive made such an amazing decision and are so lucky to have Devin as their vocalist.
I love this!
Wow Sumerian fail. Andy's try out was so much better! You can feel the raw passion and drive behind his music c'mon now!
Great job Sumerian. Andy had the best fucking version that has almost HALF A FUCKING MILLION VIEWS!?!? The hell were you all smoking?
I love it ..!
I'm always waiting for the "Swiftly it starts, impulses drivin me, so far astray..."
Cool! So this is that contest thing!
................Andy Cizek.
It's very clean w.o.w so relax
too good ,,, gives me goosebumps
I was hoping you picked him, and I'm glad you did!
I was listening to Sunsleep and remembered this. I forgot how good this was. The instrumentals on this too are so.... damn good.
Still get this shit stuck in my head years later and have to watch the audition. Y’all are smoking crack if you think Andy Cizek deserved this. Not even close
flying free down the freeway at 75 miles an hour it's awesome with this coming out the speakers can you think of anything better
Love this!
So cool
Proud of you guys! I voted for you. :)
I heard this song on spotify first as a "Top Recommendations For You". Came here to say, "YAY! Good job!" :)
AH I wanted this guy to win! Yay!
definitely made the wrong choice.
This was actually my favorite one... Glad he won
Andy Cizek"s version STOMPS this one. All this song made me want to do was listen to his audition. Ya'll fucked up
Claritys Edge Shut the fuck up.
Right? I'm honestly baffled how they chose this.
Do you guys not just think Andys one sounds like any other rock singer though? If they wanted to sound more original this was surely the better choice.
he took a shot in the mouth for it likely. andy's was within the rules without using vocal effects, if he did it still sounded more natural than this assholes audition sounds like hes singin into a fan, really would prefer andy's voice and lyrics damn shame sumerian can suck a fuck
Jesse Green i fuckin know right!!!!? Like how in fuck did this guy get the spot?
DAMN, this band is gonna be great.
sorry agree to all. Andy should have won!
i like this song 👍
beautifuuuuul
J apprécie cette version et de loin, je suis content pour vous les gars vous avez du vivre une super expérience, je tiens aussi a dire bravo à tous les chanteurs qui ont participé, continuez les gars
nice song
love the audition version
def gives a dead letter circus vibe, great vocals.
This is a situation where the people have spoken. The Sumerian Records page has 141,000 views and Andy's has almost 1 million. Thats the people telling you so much without needing to read a word from the comments . The band and or record label made a poor decision opening up auditions to the public and then not listening to that same general publics opinion on who ought to be chosen. No the band never had to choose the " popular " choice. They needed to make their choice. However the consequence is also the potential fan base making a choice of whether or not they listen to the music . Pirating is the least of a bands worries if the people aren't even listening to their version of the music to begin with. The fact that Andy has more video presence on his one song than the whole band does between all their songs released so far speaks volumes. The worst part is. , in my opinion the band picked the better singer. I like this version personally better than Andy's , but the public apparently doesn't agree with me or the bands choice. I find this piece of data fascinating and as a young record label owner myself im learning from this data vicariously through you guys as much as possible. This has been a fun internet experiment to watch . As was the Harrp machine project. You learn so much more from failure than you do success. May god bless this band and Sumerian Records and all their endeveours.
cahahaaaaaaaalm
oh hell yeah. I'll be listening to this all day
Kyle Anthony YOU KNOW,
I heard this ages ago
but don't know where?
wait
WASN'T IT THE looking for a vocalist thing a while ago x
Dark Incision yeah this was the song they put out a vocal audition for.
muy buena
is this that competition that Sumerian held a few months back?
Justin and Andy are the best picks hands down
His voice has A Dayshell esque vibe. happy you won bud, ignore all the hate, you deserve it bud.
Great cover!
I like it as it sounds It sounds too professional
muito loco amei
No disrespect but Andy killed his audition and deserved lead vocals. Devin is ok and did good but I didn't feel any raw emotion at all.
This isn't Andy smh
Finally we get the reward of Andy not being picked: Monuments
yeahh boiiii
