"Do guitars have tone?" she asked, not knowing the vast scale and nature of the often esoteric debate surrounding so called 'guitar tone'. Some would argue she was ill prepared, but the can of worms had now been opened.
It’s a great question that guitarist have debated. Do guitars have tone , do amps have tone, do speakers have tone, fingers? A guitar alone has no tone it’s just a tool until you combine all the other ingredients player being the biggest contributor.
Yeah, I do remember discussing Chuck's death with friends, as we were sitting in a theater, waiting for lights to go out. That year turned out to be quite a memorable one.
@@TehSawnderz I just like the song better. Also, Trapped In A Corner is definitely easier on the ears for the uninitiated. Catchier riffing and more melodic. Helps grip you while you get used to Chuck's vocals.
4:38 I have a feeling that what she's referring to with that is just a combination of the blastbeats and the very high reverb on the drums. The combination can mess with your perception of where the actual beat lies especially with respect to the guitar and bass.
She made me want a mix of Death's jazzy era with Opeth now. Quicker jazzy riffs mixed with slow Jazzy sections and maybe even a saxophone occasionally.
@21:28 also the structure is kind of symmetrical. At 47 seconds into the song that section begins. You get the palm muted rhythm followed by that swirly little melody. Then you have the vocals. And to finish the section, you get The inverse of the start: the swirly little melody followed by the palm muted rhythm. So it acts as a bookend on either side of the section, symmetrical. Very cool idea.
Love this video. Major death fan boy too. Songs I'd pick from those albums would be. Scream bloody gore: Mutilation Leprosy: Pull the plug Spiritual healing: Living Monstrosity Human: Lack of comprehension Individual thought patters: The Philosopher Symbolic: Symbolic Sound of Perseverance: Flesh and the power it holds.
IMO, Sacred Serenity is the most catchy Death song. Not playing it was a missed opportunity. I guarantee you it would be your wife's favorite Death song.
At 5:28 Evelyn has a reflection of unrytmical or dissonance between bass and guitar. I just wanted to add that I think this is a result of chuck playing both instruments and pushing himself to play as fast as possible - and that "unperfection" is awesome!
2:45 , wow , she is right, I cannot unsee it now, all these skeletors look like a happy company of dudes laughing and having some beer, while they make fun of co-workers or family members!
5:40 I think she's talking about the blast beats and how the snare hits can sound out of sync with the guitar at times. If that's what she means, I get it.
I've never heard that interpretation of ITP's cover art, nor did I ever think it had a Rorschach test quality to it. I always thought is was an interpretation of an xray taken from behind someone who fell face first from a great height and the paint splatter represented the blood and brain matter. I'm curious enough to show the artwork to some normie friends and get their comments.
Buyed this album on LP back in 1988, one of the first Death Metal recordings Ive heard. Not the first, but one of the first. The first Death Metal album I got was Possessed -Seven Churches (1986) and Bathory (1984).
@Bugsy204 I dont see the bug difference between Death's musicstyle and Possessed? I can agree Bathory was more of a Black Metal band with some influences from Venom.
I was just watching some Death videos and stumbled upon this. You two are so damn likable, and respect to Evelyn for throwing herself into it. If I don't see her in an Individual Thought Patterns t-shirt next time, I'll be disappointed. I feel like Chuck would have loved this.
Time for normie wife to become BASED WIFE. She's not only taking the time to listen to Death, but giving out 7s and 8s too 😩 good choice on empty words, that chorus riff is sooo fucking good 👌
Varvis you should do more deep dives into Death songs like you did for the Sound of Perseverance and Symbolic. I think you should do some deep dives into Human, there's some philosophy in there.
I love her explanation of the Scream Bloody Gore album cover so much 😂, I never seen it like that but now it totally makes sense and I love this album art even more!
I saw Death and Dark Angel in 1988 at the Trocadero in Philly. Craziest show I've ever been to, the entire place was a mosh pit. People were jumping off the balconies into the crowd. I left with blood all over me, but thankfully none of it was mine! lol
5:07 what happened here with the bass and drums is that the snare drum plays on the off beat in a blast beat, and the snare beeing more pronounced than the base drum it can make it wierd to listen to if you're not used to it
I LOVE that you continue to spread the good word of Mr Chuck Schuldiner. I was listening to Megadeth and Metallica when Death was still around but didnt "find" them until 5 years or so ago (ironically through a youtube video lol)...they have since become my favorite metal band of all-time. Makes me lament that I easily could have seen him live had I just known they existed then. Thankfully there's Death To All still touring. BTW, you won the wife lottery!
Chucks famous "gremlin from hell" vocals got her haha Spirit crusher is one of my favourites but moment of clarity tho the lead trade off between Hamm and Schuldiner cures depression on a regular basis but the misso might not have received it So well haha
Funny enough, back in the day Beavis and Butthead had The Philosopher playing on the TV when they're watching music videos together. They didn't like it on the show.
I'm curious what Evelyn would think about a band like Pantera or Lamb of God that maintains the aggression of extreme metal but is a lot more groove-oriented
Spiritual Healing rips. Altering the Future, Defensive Personalities, Within the Mind, Genetic Reconstruction, Killing Spree? Some of the most interesting drum changes and solos in the whole catalog. Calling Low Life boring? Worse, a non-metalhead's idea of a track? Holy shit, disrespect.

Live at Eindhoven rules. That disc is the only reason I listen to later Death material tbh, it's vicious. Rumor has it that Gene was puking in a bucket off to the side of his drums the whole time as he had a flu or stomach bug, so he played very fast and rushed the songs so he could go lay down.

Always thought Flattening of Emotions is a much more focused and better song than Lack of Comprehension. Love all the Human album, but as an introduction to the album, I don't get why everyone goes with LoC, it's a very strange song. I'd rather go with Suicide Machine also probably.
I love spiritual healing and with the slower nature of the album I’d even consider it more of a sludge/death metal mix. Like imagine listening to finger paintings of the insane by acid bath then going straight into something like within the mind. The music mixes too well.
Spiritual Healing was the first Death as well as Death Metal album I heard. Great album and band. Death are a great band to introduce people to Death Metal with. Should've played Living Monstrosity though imo. Songs just over 5 minutes. She probably would've hated it anyways though 😂
