Cannibal Corpse has the distinction of being the first death metal band to achieve Platinum status for album sales. Only took thirty years and six albums collectively lol
Also, Pantera's Far Beyond Driven was the first metal album to debut at #1.
@@Lord_Raptor That's not true. Far Beyond Driven peaked at #1, but didn't debut there. Also, Metallica ("black album" debuted at #1 in 1991, 3 years before Far Beyond Driven.
@@Lord_Raptor Sigh, that myth again. The first metal album to DEBUT at number one was Skid Row's "Slave To The Grind" , and was quickly followed by Metallica's self titled album.
Of course though, the first metal album to reach number one was Quiet Riot's "Metal Health".
@@MinisterOfMetal Actually Far Beyond Driven DID debut at number 1. It stayed there for one week.
@@VampireJack10 You're right, I misread my source. For some reason it says
"peaked at #1" and "by March it hit #1" but never says "debuted." My other point stands, but I got this one wrong.
I love the fact that she's not really into his music but is still into him. I mean you know. That's a cool lady.
That’s high praise!
Isn't that the case with all us, married or in years long relationships, old deathsters in our 40's,50's,60's..?
Well it's nice if you share the same music taste but it doesn't matter. In our relationship I'm the metalhead and my partner doesn't get it but still went to a metal festival with me. It's be great if I got him to "understand" metal but in the end it doesn't matter.
Well yeah. Thats how attraction works with women. Women love a man who is passionate about something. She doesnt have to be into it herself but the fact he's into it and passionate about it is cute and attractive to her. Many women will tell you this.
My gf is exactly like that, i gotta give that to her.

I didn’t know about Viking metal!! So cool!!
@@evarvy Yeah, it's a pretty niche genre that came out of the black metal scene. The band Bathory started the genre. The first few albums are pure black metal, but then starting with the 1988 album Blood Fire Death saw a shift in style that was coined Viking metal.
There are bands that also just have Viking themes, such as the death metal bands Unleashed and Amon Amarth, that don't have anything to do with Viking metal as a genre.

"Bro needs company asap"
When I was a teenager my mom would pound on my door and say "turn down that damn growl music." I used to think it was an insult but it is growl music, and I love it. \m/

I like it how she got the diferences between the subgenres already after the first three songs.
I’m a quick learner! ⭐️
The stank face was soo instinctive 😂😂
I couldn’t help myself!!
Literally every Meshuggah song IMO. One of my top 5 metal bands. Yes, please listen to more!
Also, with all due respect, there are more death metal or black metal bands than extreme metal bands in this IMO. Bands like BTBAM, Today Is the Day, Dillinger Escape Plan, IWABO, Lorna Shore and Infant Annihilator are more extreme metal . But I totally get if you're trying to work your way up with these bands, I love most of them myself (TAIM, Knocked Loose and Archspire are f***ing sick). Anyway, cheers!
Stank Face is the natural response to Meshuggah

Normie wife liked Death, Meshuggah and deathcore. No surprises there lol
NGL Cannibal Corpse = leftovers was priceless, I think Corpse grinder would approve.
28:21 I love how Varg managed to make very simple yet deep and complex songs at the same time, he truly is a master of his craft.
Lmao the fast forward part is a prime example of how I feel anytime I talk about my pedal board to a normie.
"i can play this on guitar, this is called a blast beat, I can also do this," ect. her respone "oh cool!" (good for you)

That's honestly so sweet that your darling wife was open to exploring metal after trying to backpedal, I only wish my friends and family took the same amount of time to try and learn more about that genre.
She's a keeper 🤘🏻
Worth noting one of the main defining characteristics of "death metal" as a whole genre is the musicianship on display. It's hard to find any "death metal" that isn't fairly technical, even outside the "tech death" subgenre. Tech death really takes that technical aspect all the way up to 11.
What an incredible video. My girlfriend doesn't like metal, but she already knows a lot of things from listening to it with me and when I tell stories about the bands. I'm going to do a presentation like this for her hehe

I don't know... _I_ thought Evelyn's "leftovers" joke was pretty genius. Dark as hell, but very quick thinking for a great play on words.
I've been stuck on this song out of nowhere for about a week now, would be a good one to show her. Fever Dream by Bury Your Dead. Super groovy.
You should do female growl bands, as example: Arch Enemy with Angela Gossow (that inspired alot of new females to do it) and Also with Alissa White-Gluz.
Jinjer, Spiritbox, Konvent, Sisters Of Suffocation, Asagraum (One of few black metal bands that only have females), Crypta, Nervosa and Abnormality.

Meshuggah is like if Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold and Suicide Silence had a baby. I love them. So nerdy.
I'm impressed she can actually focus on the music, while he is all over the place and try to hum along too. Great video anyway and I'd definitely watch more of this.
I saw a comment on here already, but Opeth would be an awesome band for your wife to react to! Just to see the duality of the vocals in particular!
great touch with Burzum's Dunkelheit (I just recently in the last few years became a big fan of Burzum/Varg's songs), but I'm shocked you did not include some Napalm Death! No extreme metal compilation is such without Napalm Death!! 😄
The lyrics are one of the reasons I like metal. For me no lyrics like "The sky is blue and I love you". Lyrics should have a deeper meaning behind them.
Because of what Evelyn says at 6:12 - 6:14 you should make her listen to Master of the Puppets by Metallica. Talking about deep meaning, while the music is accordingly.
When Evelyn considers a three-minute song to be long, then she should listen to some songs by Nightwish. These songs are 20+ minutes long.
Archspire's vocalist Oliver got his soeed style by the midwest chopper style of rapper, thans to artists like Tech N9ne (also a metalhead himself). The beginning of their song "Calamus will Animate" is based on Tech's song "Stamina" in rhythm.
25:40
Hope you showed her Varg's prison "cell", since she's 100% right.
This video was a lot of fun to watch and I like that she is getting into metal slowly, thy art is murder reign of darkness is one of my favourite songs and I love archspire sorry if I spelt their name wrong I hope you guys make this a series because it would be fun to see her turn into a metal head

7/10? She liked Meshuggah. She's a keeper. ❤
Definitely
She is great. You’re a lucky man. With her comments on Norse mythology, I’d play her some Enslaved, Tyr, Mithotyn, Turisas, etc.
i had never listened to Death before today, but wow i've never been so seduced by instrumentation. i'm definitely a fan now.
Definitely do a part 2 with a different set of bands. Oh btw, I subscribed to your channel after watching this.
I was blasting The Jester Race this morning and my gf was dancing to it. She is not into metal AT ALL, but somehow, some bands have this effect on her (i guess the bpms and the groove can be found in some kind of pop-house span. If you get what i mean.)
I love how it still feels like you're trying so hard to be cool for her and she secretly thinks you're the cutest thing ever. you guys are awesome.
Definitely should be a series, I get why you cut the songs for copyright reasons, but it would be better to see her full and uncut reaction.

Sadly in December 2001 we lost chuck too his brain cancer.he was only 34 years old when he passed away.
RIP
@varvis Chuck Shuldiner is the godfather/created of death metal btw! It’s ashame we lost him so soon! His mother every year would do interviews talking about chuck. She has a website I forget it’s name but she hasn’t posted on it for years, she did her last interview about chuck on December 13th,2011( the 10th anniversary of chuck’s death) Chuck was her second son she had lost, when Chuck was a kid iirc age 8 or so his older brother died in a freak accident. Chuck originally formed and created death as an outlet to let out his anger and frustration,he created death metal in the process (1984 to be exact) then his later albums where his personal views on the world. The sound of preservation (1998) was death’s final album, chuck’s final album was with his other band control denied in 1999. In 1998 or 1999 he was diagnosed With glioblastoma, which he had surgery for and was removed successfully but in 2000 the glioblastoma came back. His insurance wouldn’t pay for another surgery when Metallica and the other bands from the big 4 heard about it, did concerts in order to pay for the surgery which they did but it was far too late. At the age of 34 Chuck died on December 13th,2001 in his childhood bedroom.
Chuck did his final interview in was in early 2001, Chuck did his final public appearance a few months before he passed away. He did his final concert in 1999.

Thanks for the likes VARVIS I wasnt expected that ! Hope you have a great rest or your night, glad I could at least shed knowledge about Chuck ! He was said to be very humble and hated being called the godfather of death metal.
Haha I've been on both sides of the interaction. I've been the only guy listening to metal in my group of friends, it was a very interesting experience. Looking back on it, I'm shocked that sometimes they would let me put some music that was totally not in the mood at all. Like Neurosis at a New Year's eve dinner :D Even though most of my friends hated the music, they were still tolerant enough to let me put it from time to time, because they were doing the same thing with awful french pop that I hated. When you expose "newbies" to metal, there are two things that will shock you. Number one : they will like stuff you would never expect them to love. In my case, some loved Nile, for the egyptian theme. They wouldn't care at all about the growling vocals or the brutality of it. And a couple of friends just LOVED Neurosis (which is my favorite band), which I didn't expect. Neurosis is like Tool for extreme people. It's raw, it's powerful, it's hard to listen to a whole album. But yeah, your friends are similar to you emotionally, that's why they're your friends, so I understood why they loved it after a while. Number two : they will reject stuff that you thought was actually extremely palatable. I thought they would like stuff that was repetitive and groovy, like indus metal for example. Godflesh was a big no no. They hated it. All kinds of black metal were rejected coz of the screaming vocals. Same with post metal like Cult of Luna. Neurosis vocals were ok, coz not 100% screaming hardcore, but Cult of Luna no way for them. So it's a process... What a lot of my friends loved though were the concerts. The energy really speaked to them. You gotta pick a band that is not pure chaos though. Forget about taking them to a grindcore concert like Nasum or Nostromo. But stuff like Gojira, Finntroll, Isis, Jesu, yeah no problem.
Now being on your girlfriend's side of the interaction : it's when friends come to me and are like "listen to this you're gonna love it". And it's wayyyy worse when they get excited, do the air drumming and shit. A friend tried to make me like Porcupine Tree in this way and I just hated it. I found it too over the top, hated the clean vocals. So it is a LOT better to be low key about it. Tell your friend "hey I dig that maybe you should have a listen on your own, let me know what you think". Never tell them like "it's the best death metal song of all time" or "this is Gene Hoglan, the best metal drummer that's ever lived". It just does not work, it's way worse. Let them discover it at their own pace. I've made friends discover stuff like that and they took their time and can't stop listen to it now. You cannot predict what will click or not with some people, don't force it.
And by the way Black Metal is the toughest genre to make people love. I've tried and tried. Satyricon doesn't work, Deathspell Omega doesn't work, forget about Burzum or Marduk. However, stuff like Emperor works if you go for the album Prometheus. That classical inspiration will grab them. Also, not entirely black, but Septicflesh works as well. When newbies listen to metal, you gotta hook them with something. Whether it's the contrast between melodic parts and pure chaos like Neurosis, or the orchestral parts in Septicflesh and Nile, it needs something. I have a friend for whom the hook is groove and amazing sound production. He loves stoner, doom, but he's very picky about sound production. He loves Electric Wizard, Yob, Unsane... But for example, I could not make him love Chat Pile. Chat Pile is groovy and heavy, thought he'd love it, but the raw sound production was too much for him, he literally told me "sounds like Burzum..." which, as a metalhead, shocked me, they're not the same thing at all. But yeah, gotta know the people you're introducing to metal. You can never predict what will work IMO.
Love the shoutout, thanks Normie Wife 😂

Metal has become so all encompassing there is a genre out there for everyone. You should introduce your wife to the Band Tyr, i think anything off the album Ragnarok she would enjoy.
Eluveitie is probably my favorite folk metal band, and Call of the Mountains is an incredible track. Good taste.
Metal easy for normies ?
How about "Hypa, Hypa" by Electric Callboy, or some Babymetal, or ... their collab "Ratatata" by Babymetal & Electric Callboy. If that's too "nice", maybe "Mindreader" by Electric Callboy, or maybe some Spiritbox, i.e. "Circle With me" Live version with Tatiana from Jinjer. There is so much stuff to make the "entry" a little easier, than starting with Lorna Shore or the like (although that's obviously impressive to hear).
Oh yeah, how about some Wintersun. Maybe "Sons of winter and stars", or "The Forest that weeps". Although they tend to be a bit long, maybe too long for a reaction.
Burzum does not mean darkness in Norwegian, it means Darkness in Tolkien's Black Speech from the Lord of the Rings (Varg is a bit of a Tolkien/fantasy nerd). Also, originally this song was meant to be called Burzum and was supposed to be on his self titled debut album, that's why the name was later changed to Dunkelheit to still kind of have the same name :)
That was funny! I'm going to call them that from now on. Cannibal leftovers!

This was very entertaining. I always get a kick out of hearing non-metalheads' opinions, like how she said Meshuggah sounded like a movie's action sequence.
Oh and just to contribute to the overall nerdiness, ACKSHUALLY Burzum means "darkness" in the Black Speech (the language of Mordor).

Reminds me of taking friend to see In Flames/Meshugga/White Chapel. He finally understood why they’re awesome. Seeing them play up-close and the sound. He prefers mainstream stuff and techno. We share music interests, like KMFDM and NIN, but I’ve always listened to heavier music. Death, At The Gates, Chimaira, Dio, Nothingface, Nile, Cerphalic Carnage, Red Cord, Slayer, and on and on. I had played 3 Inches of Blood and Lamb of God to him when their first albums came out and they were exploding but he was never interested. Now I got him listening to Spiritbox and Gojira. You’re telling me countrycore is a metal genre?! I’m sold!! 😍🤘🏻
kind of, i recommend the track demon or ghost from actually a country artist called Mitchel Tenpenny but in this song he features a metalcore (i think it is metalcore) band called Underoath, the song is really great and IT HAS SINGING
Two dudes listening for good music.
Hey, at least the dude on the left is having a good time, props to him
That Cannibal Corpse joke is a 10/10! 😂😂😂
SO, I've recently come across your channel. I love it!!! Have you run Opeth and Dream Theater to show song length for her yet? Lol. Awesome stuff guys! Keep it going!!!!!
We will be getting to some prog very soon!
Good, the next step is Noisegrind. We can watch someone contemplating divorce in real time. XD
gorenoise! gorenoise! gorenoise!
The vocalization of the blast beat was superb!
To be fair after discovering tech death I hardly listen to other metal genres. They just have everything I need to start my day - like a strong espresso and a tray of chocolate chip cookies.
Not gonna lie though stuff like Burzum is growing on me. I love BM vocals and if the song has good production quality I'm all over it.
Yeah after like 20 years of listening to metal I am also starting to like black metal, which I didnt before. Especially some modern black metal bands like Gaerea and Mgla.
For how long have you been only listening to tech death? Personally I can't listen to the same genre forever or I'll burn out on it and potentially ruin it for me, I have to alternate my genres.
BROOOOOOOOOOOOO If she like singing, you should introduce her Periphery! Specifically Scarlet, off of their 2nd album!
Bands like uncle acid and the deadbeats, windhand, electric wizard, warning, my dying bride, or Sleep would be good for the next episode
You two are adorable. Appreciate the reality.
Love the picks, great songs. Please make this a series but for next episode ease her into metal with some easier to listen to tracks. Even going with in flames you could for I am above. Or some a7x. Maybe trivium, periphery, killswitch, polaris, of mice and men (sorry I realise I'm mostly listing metalcore but it could be a good genre to start her on cause it has those heavy vocals but the cleans make it easier to listen to for people starting on metal.) You could even try some System of a down.
The meshuggah grooves are irresistable. Resistance is futal. Once you start on that path there is no going back.
This is probably not gonna happen, but I would really love to see your reaction/take on Lithuanian black metal band Nahash, specifically song Arcanum Triste if nothing else from the album Daath. Nahash was one of the bands at the forefront of Lithuanian death metal birth in the early 90s and the band is still active.
Suprising to hear Dead Eternity by In Flames on your playlist. Their oldschool stuff was some of my earliest forays into metal. It's a shame what happened to them.
Death 7.5/10, Meshuggah 7/10, your wife has a great taste in metal. \m/
*cannibal corpse officially changes name to leftovers*
