    Growing up in the '70s in Pittsburgh, we took these monumental victories for granted. We had the Steelers, Pitt football, and the Bucs. Thank you for posting this game.

    As a Phillies fan, I was at this game as a child and realized that after the Pirates came back from 8-0, it was just the Pirates' year. The Phillies had won the division 3 straight times 1976-77-78 but choked each time in the playoffs. The Pirates take the division in 1979 and win the World Series. It was very frustrating watching that happen when your own team couldn't do it the 3 previous years. Of course, at that time I had no idea what was in store for the Phillies the next season in 1980. I look back now at this 1979 Pirates team and appreciate them and respect them very much and find it so cool watching the old videos. Their fans went nuts at the home games too!

      I don't think of the Phillies as choking those years. The Reds and Dodgers were very good teams.

    Would you believe 79 was Pittsburgh’s year too. The Phillies were one year from their 80 championship. It just goes to show you, Pitching is everything. The Pirates needed a good solid 5 innings from Rooker to stay in the game; it didn’t happen. They had no choice. They needed to rest their starting rotation. The game was lost after 3 innings. Noles did the job. Very impressive!

    As a Pirate fan I get crap about Pirates not winning the World Series since 1979, I laugh and point out that the Flyers haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1974 ! Look Pirates have 5 World series titles The Penguins have 5 Stanley Cups .And the Steelers have 6 Super Bowl wins. When Philadelphia gets close , let me know.

    I love how the announcers could have mentioned their thoughts on movies during the 5th inning. "You know, Larry, I am still waiting on a really good movie about Mozart. I mean, what true baseball fan isn't. Right? So I'm thinking round about 1984 there should be a pretty decent movie about him. Now talk is that blond kid from the Star Wars might be in it.

    Stargell, Parker, Rose and Schmidt. That's 4 HOF caliber players in this game. IMO, Parker makes it if not for injuries and cocaine use.

    • @mactheknife7049
      @mactheknife7049 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Five: Bill Madlock by all rights should be in the HOF as well. But he isn't in large part because on every team he played for (especially the Pirates), he wasn't the biggest star. Al Oliver, who'd left the Pirates by then, is in the same class.

    Blown GS call, then lies about it. And what’s all this “we” crap? Are these 2 PIT announcers on the roster? What homers! The more others I hear the more grateful I am for Kalas / Ashburn. They may have been Philly fans but they were baseball fans first and got just as genuinely stoked over a great opposing team play as one by the Phils.

    As potent as that 1979 Phillies team seemed, there must have been something wrong with the game management, because this wasn't the first time the Phillies bullpen blew a big lead. In fact, it wasn't even the biggest lead they blew that year, because they were up 12 in bottom of the fifth inning in the 23-22 game at Wrigley Field, and yet the Cubs came all the way back against Tug McGraw and Ron Reed before Mike Schmidt, who started that game with a HR, ended the scoring that way, as the Phillies had to scratch out a victory they should have had in the bag. And an argument can be made that the blown 8-run lead in this game was an even bigger indictment on the game management and the Phillies bullpen than the blown 12-run lead earlier that season at Wrigley was, because Veterans Stadium was a much bigger park than Wrigley was, especially with the wind blowing out, and home runs were not nearly as big a factor as they were in the Cubs' 12-run comeback.
    Then after the Pirates had completed their 8-run comeback, Ed Ott applied the Coup de Gras with a grand slam HR, which was at least the fourth grand slam that McGraw had given up to a left-handed hitter that season. The announcers mentioned it was the second grand slam he gave up to a left-handed hitter in a week (John Milner had gotten him in Pittsburgh), and of course, he also gave up Bill Buckner's grand slam HR in the 23-22 game at Wrigley earlier that season, as well as one to Terry Kennedy.
