- UK knife laws in theory vs reality. UK knife laws allow you to carry a folding pocket knife with a blade under 3 inches provided it does not lock, however other knives can be carried in theory if you have a legitimate use for having one, but what you may consider legitimate use may not be legitimate to a Police Officer etc.
This is why in my opinion selective application of the law is bad.

When a safety feature is illegal
I collect knives and I always cut myself with non-locking blades. However I have never cut myself with locking knives

Most german police forces use pepperspray(OC based) instead of CS gas because its more reliable. Quite hillarous considering it is literally not allowed to be used against people. Civilians are only allowed to use pepperspray against animals, only CS gas is allowed to be used against humans. But police apperently doesn't care.

I went to the royal armouries museum, and they had an entire room that was basically anti knife/gun propaganda.

And best of all, they have a bizarre comic strip thing about a teenager that murders someone with a knife and is arrested, and they act like it was a weird accident, and he wouldn’t of hurt anyone if he didn’t have a knife.
It ruined the rest of the museum for me.

I'd say knife crime may go down if laws were laxed, the "american" way of thinking IE "I'm not going to stab anyone because everyone around me also has a knife"

My neighbor was part of this club in 80s- 90s they had alsorts of guns including replicars of Clint Eastwood's cowboy pistols guns,Rifle and gun belt fully working, had the same stitching to match they had 44 magnum same as dirty harry, Shot guns,
9mms, Berettas ,Glochs, made there own bullets under the stairs.

back in betamax days, they where odd but lost some guns after the UK laws changed but kept some.
We moved away so not sure if they still have them or not but as a child we did have gun shops and knife shops locally,
I used to collect knifes when I was younger my grandad, Dad and brother did,
We still have several throwing knifes Bowie knifes flick knifes butterfly knifes, Gurkyr and machetes, We used as we used to camp out a lot growing up with it being cheap holidays and such
but was taught to be responsible an respectful with knifes how to use handle and throw them properly poorer trees where battered at end of weekend not once did I need to carry a knife for or want to for protection you had your ✊ for that.
All are legal if they stay in house.
But illegal if take out side the house to carry ect. With the new laws.
These younger ones are stupid they have had some very nice expensive exceptional crafted knifes banned because they have no regard or respect for them
which most of these idiots use kitchen knifes anyway for there stupid antics cheap things where as quality knifes cost and last a long time if looked after

Dude, The law is an ass.... we knew this though didn't we? Heard a tale about a carpet fitter who was collared for carrying a stanley knife....outrageous. It's a real shame that the government doesn't address the real causes of Knife crime...Gangs, drugs etc that sort of thing. Great video as usual sir.
Cheers, as said at this point I regularly just carry a lock knife on me if I have a reason for having it, as if they throw the book at me I'd rather have been carrying a safer knife to use.
Get a knife with a sheath and it is legal if it's under three inches, it doesn't lock because it doesn't fold so if it not a combat knife so if it is something such as a fishing or hunting knife then you will be able to carry this on you legally.

in germany you can (still) carry two handed locking knifes such as opinels. And funnily enough, theres a length limit for fixed blade knifes(that limit 12cm) but not for folding knifes, so you could legally carry an Opinel No 13(22cm blade length) or something, lol.

And here in Indiana, USA as long as it isn't a ballistic knife or throwing star you're good. You can carry throwing knives, switch blades, long swords, etc and the most they can do is just tell you to put it in your car if you're going to an event or building that doesn't allow weapons.
You can own a longsword, but carrying "weapons" is not allowed. Long swords are weapons by design, so you couldn't carry those.
Moved to Bulgaria from my native homeland of Wales last year. In Bulgaria knifes are not classed as weapons as such and therefore there is no legislation on length/type/usage of any sort of blades, as so you can legally carry a 12 inch blade without any form of troubles, maybe a slight wonder why from a policeman but he will send you on your way without issue.

Good video, sums up a lot of the silly aspects of UK knife law. Though for me, I think the Opinel would be more likely to get your collar felt than the Victorinox.
The law actually specifically mentions Swiss army knives as being everyday carry legal.
And people have still been charged for having swiss army knives on them, so your basically not safe with our laws.
I think the opinel is in more of a grey area than you suggest. The home office definition states a locking knife that is unlocked with a button or switch. The opinel is neither. I think it's a lockable knife rather than a locking knife as the lock does not engage as soon as the blade is fully open.
Would be a tough argument to make depending on the copper I guess.
True I think when they originally wrote it they were thinking of the scary switchblades mafia guys always use in movies (same reason they banned basically all the ninja weapons), but the Opinel is more of a slow open, use two hands to slide the ring lock kind of deal. Less threatening.
The law was clarified in Harris vs DPP, so the locking opinel is not a grey area, quite clear cut (pun intended).

Wrong it is down to judges and courts to decide whether you have a valid excuse for carrying one as for the police whether you have a valid excuse or not they don't care you'll have it taken off you and booked into a cell so when released will be brought in front of a judge for the judge to decide whether you did wrong or not as far as the police are concerned you've done wrong as you're still carrying a weapon and maximum prison sentence for it is 4 years and they can give you an unlimited fine since the fine laws used to be £5,000 until it changed in 2015 and the police are only doing what they're told to do and chances are they've more than likely been given the chance but then they got gobby which led to their arrest

It blows my mind Knife laws are crazy in the UK. We can carry any knife were I live in the US. The only thing that is illegal are Dirks in certain circumstances.

Good video! I've been collecting knives for the last 40 odd years, and the vast majority of my collection have to stay at home, in a box.
This is a sad situation. It's getting to the point that emigrating to America or some other less strict country is becoming more attractive to me every day.

@@GanymedeXD No, I'm Ok. It's still legal for most knives to be kept at home. The only restricted ones being gravity knives, ballisongs, button spring knives, and probably a couple more I can't think of.
I can have pretty much any knife other than that. When the blades get to 'sword length' then I'm still Ok, as long as they don't resemble curved Samurai swords.......Even Samurai swords are still legal, as long as they're hand made Carbon steel. That loophole might be tightened, if it already hasn't been.

Great video mate, our knife laws are so backwards, I agree a better law would be if it was sub 3 inch CAN lock and be carried for no reason, even a 2 inch lock knife would be good for using.
Yeah I used to have a Gerber lock knife under 3 inches with no flip mechanism useless for nefarious uses, but very safe for utility uses, but the law treats it the same as a giant Bowie for example.

Just ordered a new poket knife, a Japanese Higonokami. I've been putting off getting it for ages, but my trusty Opinel no.5 (no.5 doesn't lock) shut on my fingers and i got pretty badly hurt. Ordered a new bushcraft knife at the same time, literally did this 2 minutes ago and this video popped up.
I got a knife with a three inch locking blade from a market stall. I wanted it as a fishing and general utility knife. The bloke tried selling me this thing which was over twice the size and also locking. He told me it was legal because it didn't have a button to eject the blade. I told him I wanted it for fishing, not hunting buffalo.

If there’s literally any crime in the uk with pistols (there is) something very very very illegal in the uk, then why do police expect to stop criminals carrying knives that you can buy from a common store just because they told them not to

In georgia,usa you can legally carry any any knife under 5 inches. anymore and you need a permit for it.
I use a lock knife at work now. Nearly had a bad accident with one that was UK legal with a slip joint.

Sadly if it's locking it's automatically not allowed for EDC, you need a specific reason to carry it. I have a less than 2" Gerber lock knife, falls under the same rules as my 6" lock knife...

I got a 12 month suspended sentence when I was about 13 for having a lock blade with a blade of 1” I was using it for carving wood.
If that was in the UK that's because its illegal for anyone under 18 to be sold or in possession of or own them but if it was under adult supervision then it shouldn't have even mattered since it was an adults property and you were just using it

No butterfly knives are being made totally illegal in the UK, the majority of knives you can own on private property but there is also a banned list.

Another reason you might be less likely to get into trouble for carrying an Opinel is that they don't lock automatically, and many people do not even know they are capable of locking.
My friend had kept an Opinel in his fishing tackle box for many years, and he had absolutely no idea the collar could be rotated to lock the blade until I showed him.
If you happen to encounter a police officer who is not familiar with Opinels, there's a good chance they will not figure out the lock.
I carried a No. 7 for many years when I lived in the UK. I ground the blade into a drop point, which shortened it just enough to bring it to legal length, and I removed the locking collar with circlip pliers.
Now I live in the US, I carry a No. 8 with the locking collar intact. Great little knives.
I've sat at work using an openel no 6 and no one batted an eyelid pulled out a Stanley to open a parcel every one jumped it's crazy

I carry a leatherman multitool at work its blade locks and is a bit over 3 inches but I cut strimmer cord cut glue cartridges cable ties and open cement bags and other stuff all day at work still don't know if breaking the law it depends on the officers interpretation of the law ?

Well you have the legal excuse etc for having it on you, it's more if the Police want to cause trouble over it, but unless someone calls them on you, they have no reason to search you for it etc.

In my day (80's) you could carry a machete when backpacking/bush crafting with no problems, as we had no ill intent. Now, I still have no ill intent but am unable to carry one. I checked with the Police regarding the law and it comes down to the intended use. I carry a small folding non locking multi tool on me and a sheath knife squared away in my pack for wood craft at camp. If I have interpreted the law correctly, I should have no issues! This conversation with the police was done via 101 and the call was logged and an email sent to me, so I can say I followed the law to the best of my knowledge!

Opinel lock knives for example are used by thousands of Commercial Fishermen (not Anglers) across Europe and any Fisherman will tell you why you need a locking blade on the rolling, pitching deck of a working vessel.

If the police is reading this, I have a d2 razor style japanese pocket knife. Modern from Haoming knives and its over 3 inches. It's not fair but there are less than 3 inches.

I wonder how easy itd be to make some sort of "80 percent" locking knife that you could set up in such a manner that a screw head in the handle could be turned to make it into a locking knife, but when the screw is turned the other way it is not a locking knife such that when you are walking down the street and get stopped the officer would examine a non locking knife, but when you use it you could turn the screw and have a locking knife?
Weaponcollector has done a video on a knife like that, that used a Allen key to lock the knife, quite a clever design.

Yeah that's the problem even if you technically don't break a law, you could still have to endure all the legal proceedings just for it to be thrown out later on
Read Harris vs DPP which clarified the law on that. Basically it cannot have anything that impedes the folding of the blade.
I am a labourer I used to have several lock knives but nowadays it's so problematic I dont use them outside of home. I still likena good blade just not gonna take it out and about . Personally I do like swiss army knives they are legal I think?
Swiss army pocket knives are one of the legal ones as the blade is way under 3 inches its not lockable and its technically a foldable blade aswell which is one of the requirements for a legal pocket knife to be carried on you and I wonder why Stanley blades can be legal when once they open it locks into place and you have to press a button to press the blade back into the case and painters and decorators etc always have one on them when working

Here in Indiana you can carry any type of blade as long as it isn't a ballistic knife or throwing star [switchblades are legal]. Anyone can carry a knife [18+] (you don't need an I.D. or permit to carry one) Only time you can get in trouble is if it is a government owned property that doesn't allow 'weapons', or a privately owned place that doesn't allow them..(Those places has someone that will ask if you have one on you and will use a metal detector) though the worst they can do is just tell you you can't enter until you get rid of it. (Though there where many times where I've shown them my pocket knife and they let me through anyways) So yes you can carry a machete into a store or police station and they can't do anything about it until you actually try to hurt someone.
Those sound like sensible laws rather than "OI WHERE'S YOUR LICENSE!"
Total agree with you. If you need a knife whatever size or shape as long as you have a reason for carrying it so what. But for everyday carry I get what they say to a point ( no pund intended ) but a 3 inch lock or slip joint there isn't any difference even in the let's hate knives era we live in. And as you say which I know to be true most stabbing in the UK are by kitchen knives not by slip joints, tactical or bush knives as us sensible people use as the tools they were intended for. Rant over much love.
The law is clear, however under certain conditions you may argue that you have a good reason to carry a certain knife besides the ones deemed everyday carry (EDC), you can not argue that a kitchen knife 10" carried in the belt by a 14-year-old for personal protection or because he is taking it home is a good reason if stopped by an officer whilst he is acting suspiciously. You can carry within reason a knife for a good reason and one example is camping however it is not a good reason to openly carry a knife in a city centre or in a pub or school even if it is legal, you need to have a good reason to carry any knife.
