- You're at the launch ramp getting ready for a day on the water with friends. BoatUS Magazine's senior editor Rich Armstrong teaches you how to launch a boat at the ramp when you have assistance. He explains what each person should do and how to safely back up the the boat trailer, unhook the boat from the trailer, and get it to the dock. Install lines on cleats, replace the drain plug, remove the transom tie-downs. Unplug trailer lights, loosen safety chain. Signal to the driver, release winch line and bow eye, secure the boat to the dock. Finally, walk the boat to the end of the dock while the driver parks the truck and trailer.

beautiful launch ramps - - often the rustic ones don't have docks beside them.
No solo launching/loading on those kinds of docks! Thanks for watching, Lisa
Thank You
You're welcome, Robert! Thanks for watching.
Nice instruction. Why slack the winch line prior to releasing the bow clip? Appears to make the person stretch further than necessary.1:29
Hi William - thanks for your input. It’s really about releasing a little tension so you don’t have to struggle to get the hook off the bow eye. It could be just a few inches of slack. The key distinction is if the trailer has bunks, which are just rails to slide the boat off, they don’t give you much help. Rollers make it much easier and probably do it without the slack.

the motor vehicle must use a shift '' N '' as neutral with a trailer boat while slow down ramp to the water...
dont use a shift '' R '' as reverse
Ah, the great "R" vs "N" at the ramp debate. While we may have our preferences, we're going to have to shrug our shoulders and tell folks to back down the ramp however you'd like!
Let's see him launch and retrieve without help.
Everything is good till he do balancing act. If you do RA, it is extremely dangerous to stand directly in front of the boat. It is also extremely dangerous to reach or extend your body to turn the crank.
The risk are back strain, slip and fall and possible death. It is important for you as boater to step in the water and to the side. Why?
You are giving yourself more space and time to evade any bad movement from the boat.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Steven.
What does RA stand for? Thanks
