I am from Slovakia and this "sound" is actually a letter in my language-ŕ- and that is exactly how you pronounce it, so it is quite natural for us :D lot of kids have trouble learning it, though
It’s so annoying. I can roll my r’s when speaking in languages like Spanish but I can’t extend them into a purring sound…. I feel so left out that i am the only one in my choir who can’t tongue trill 😭
This is what did it for me!@@vocabilities I could only ever "fake" it by having the trill go into the back of my throat. Couldn't get the tip of the tongue to do it. Saying "prune" helped. I'm guessing the plosive consonant helps force the air in the right direction? (now to get it to go longer than a second. XD)
I've spent all day watching videos on trilling an 'r', and thanks to your video, I can get my tongue to vibrate through the gusting 'h' sound you mentioned. Your instructions on the cupping position and relaxing the tip of the tongue were very helpful. All the other videos have said to completely relax the tongue, and it was confusing and made me frustrated because it's literally impossible. But I think it comes down to accent and dialect because most other videos I watched were from Americans who have a very strong and rounded 'r', so they probably don't feel the muscles cupping in the base of the tongue like British and Australians do. I'm nowhere near trilling properly but it's a start. Thank-you heaps. :)
I did not understand this video for weeks despite watching it several times, I saw your comment and did what you said he said, "gusting the 'h' sound" and got it first try. I felt like the biggest dumb idiot idot dumbfart dumb, dumb. Maybe I have an attention span deficiency or I have a natural dislike for verbal instructions so when I read written discussion about instructions that are not targeted at me, I understand better? who cars
Same here. Lord knows how many hours listening to linguists and native Spanish/Italian speakers… and then in three minutes, for the first time EVER, I at least have a vibrating tongue. The neighbours probably think I am strangling my puppy, but, as you say, it's a start.
I made a cup with my tongue and made the gusting H and all that happens is the air flows around my tongue. Just some weird hissing sound, no vibration at all. I don't know how it's possible to simultaneously relax the tongue and also form it into a cup. The muscle contracting is what forms that shape! Therefore it's rigid, therefore it doesn't flap. If I didn't know that millions of people (not me) do it effortlessly, I would think it were literally impossible to do.
Couldn't do a tongue trill to save my life, then he said 'To help people roll their R' and I was like, wait, I know how to roll my Rs .... And just like that, I knew how to tongue trill without even watching the whole video!
As soon as you mentioned thinking about it to much, I tried with as little thought as I could manage and my tongue moved so weird! Obviously now I can't repeat it, but just that little was something I've never done. Now to the rest of the video! Hopefully it'll be like learning to whistle and it's just something I can pick up with an explanation.... Ok you even bring up whistling, thanks so much for this video! I had a lot of luck parroting you. I look forward to being able to do it regularly!
When I was learning Spanish, the trick that helped me the most was to start the roll with a T or a D, then try to hold it as long as possible. Only after practicing this could I start to roll off a H or R sound.
Try not to over analyse it! Best to just give it a go and play until you figure it out. Thinking too much and trying to be too correct might slow down progress. Just go for it! 😝
Bro no matter how hard I try and how many hours I spend in my room hissing like a snake I simply can't do it. I literally get bullied about this in school and I am just desperate to learn this. Somebody please help😫😭
I have no idea how this magically helped some other people in the comments but unfortunately it didn't help me at all :( this is probably at least the 20th video I've watched on rolling Rs and literally no one can explain how to do it. Seems like the advice is always just "do it this way! rrrrrrrrrrr! See? Now you've got it!" About as useful as them flying around the room and telling me to try it myself.
It’s a tough one. My son’s first language is Finnish and most kids here have to have speech therapy just because of that trilled R sound. It’s annoying I know. Sorry this couldn’t be more help but you should really visit someone in person if you want to correct your speech .

I can do the trill alone just fine, the problem is combining it with other consonants. But I get it this is not a language channel primarily. Guess I'll just have to practice :\
I'm having serious trouble rolling my R's. Whenever I try, I feel like I'm getting more like a buzzing/vibration sound. Like, I'm vibrating my tongue rather than letting the tip flap. I'm not sure how to do the proper tongue placement. And when I have my tongue cupped, it feels rigid and won't relax and flap. But when I try to do the breath thing, when I exhale, it feels like my tongue is trying to catch the breath, which makes my exhale feel a bit flappy, but not at the same speed you demonstrated. Am I getting on the right track?
@@itz_apollo6774 just try to copy the sound he is making. Don't think too much about making the sound, just try and make the sound. Initially yiu might get one or two trills and run out of hreath, but once you "feel" the sound and the vibration, you will get it.
Got it after half an hour, but can't trill and add sounds at the same time. I'll get it after some more practice. Unfortunately all this vibration loosens the allergy gunk in the back of my throat and brings it forward.

@@vocabilities When I relax, then air just flow through my cheek and lips, and if I tried to control air to flow over the tongue, then things get tense up. I could get my cheeks, lips and back of tongue to vibrate.... every where except for the tip :/
