- In today's video I visit one of the top 50 chip shops in the UK according the Fry Magazine!
It's called Callaway's, and it's tucked away in the Fordington area of Dorchester. It's only a tiny little place, but apparently they bang out some fabulous Fish & Chips - well it should be if it's award winning....
But what can you get there for under a tenner??

Wow, best chippy you've reviewed IMO. Everything was great, the location, the price, the fish looked superb and the rest looked really good quality as well. They well deserve their top 50 status.
It was absolutely fab, it really was. I was intrigued by how the hake would be, being a couple of quid cheaper than the cod, but it was excellent. As you say, well deserving of their award winning status. I will definitely return there that's for sure!

Cracking bit of fish, good crispy batter. Proper portion of chips & a good old-fashioned fish cake. A brace of wally's. Fantastic. And all from the Dolls house sized chippy. Knock Out🥊and value for money. Cheers Allan&Family

My God the quality of chippy food you get over there is fantastic compared to the crap soggy and over priced rubbish in Ireland. I envy you Greeno. What a great find well done. 👍
Yeah, this place is a real hidden gem. Absolutely cracking. Can’t recall ever having fish and chips in Ireland. I used to visit Limerick a lot with work, but normally we’d just be heading out for drinks in the evening 🤣
@@GreenoEats Let’s not knock the few pints buddy 🤣 but when it comes to Irish chippy food I unfortunately know what I’m talking about. I’m a delivery driver for one just outside Dublin so I know all about the price and what goes on in the kitchen area’s. Everything about your vid is spot on. We produce lukewarm soggy batter, rubber batted sausages, not a hint of mushy peas or any pea product and EVERYTHING is bought in. So consider yourself lucky my friend. 👍
@@philipmckeon8944 wow, seems like avoiding the chippy in Ireland was a smart move then lol. When I was arranging trips to Limerick the guys there would always want me to come on a Thursday so we could go for beers Thursday night. Better to be hungover on someone else's time in work on the Friday than their own time on the weekend ha ha!

This place is absolutely fabulous. Tucked away in a lace you'd be unlikley to come across it by chance, but well worth looking up if you're ever in the area!
Absolutely well worth the money,homemade fish cake looked excellent but battered hake wins the prize for me. Looked a good old fashioned chippy. Great review👊
Yeah, a proper hidden gem this place… great ingredients treated with care. The hake was incredible, luckily I don’t live closer as I would be there far too often!

Hake, or Rock Salmon as it used to be called, was quite popular years ago.
I had some hake recently in my review of Callaways chippy in Dorchester - it was delicious !

Can't deny that did look beautifully cooked and delicious. Never known a chippy that served lemon wedges with takeaway orders; shows that it is a premium place.
Hi Cassandra - yeah the lemon wedges were a nice touch. Unusual to find a food outlet paying so much attention to detail but still at a more than reasonable price - a real hidden gem!

Went there after seeing your video, had cod chips and pea fritter, all very nice. Side note turns out I went to school with the owner 😃
ah, a pea fritter, big fan of that! And meeting someone from school running a chippy is much better than the normal occasional message on Facebook right!

Looking at the list of the top chip shops there are some famous ones that I would like to visit if I get the chance, although mostly they are a long way away from me. And gherkins really are great aren't they!!

I'm a Northerner who loves the South and tells everyone that it's just as cheap to eat darn sarf if you shop around , this was such excellent value for money and that fish cake to die for.
This chippy only 10 miles out of Weymouth and the Isle of Portland.

Yeah, if you stay away from the tourist traps then there is still some decent value to be had down here in Dorset. I do hope that you try Callaway’s next time you are in that neck of the woods, it’s well worth it!

Most good Fish and chip shops will do lightly battered is you ask.
Benefit of this also is its freshly cooked for you.
That’s a good tip! Similar to ordering in somewhere like McD, always slightly customise the burger you order so that you know they have had to make a fresh one 😉

I have only ever had it in Spanish food and Eastern European restaurants before I think, never in a chippy, it was great!

What a quirky traditional chippy in what looks a beautiful place. I thought the food backed up the aesthetics of that chippy and it’s one if I lived closer would 100% look to visit! Top video Greeno, I enjoyed that!

Ha ha, I would never support the Wolves pal. Been there twice. Got a half eaten pie launched at me one time, and accused of having an unhealthy interest in youngsters another, just cos the Cherries were beating or had beaten them. So we're on solid ground mate!

I found Hake to be tasteless
It's quite a delicate flavour I guess, but then so is cod when it's fresh. This was really good though.
