  • The majority of our foals are “medicine horses,” which means their instinct and capacity to help others heal is strong. In such cases, we are looking to match those horses with the person or people who are ready to receive them and create a relationship with them. Our caretakers play an integral part in preserving the Native American horse and restoring a healing balance to the world.
Sacred Way Sanctuary’s “Native American Horse Preservation Program” is run in partnership with Sacred Healing Circle (SHC), a New Mexico-based 501c3 nonprofit organization.
Our organizations have joined forces to achieve the following goals:
    1. Sponsor and conduct genetic and other scientific research regarding the Indigenous horse of the Americas
    2. Preserve the endangered Indigenous Horse of the Americas (sometimes also referred to as the Native American horse, the Native horse, or the Native pony)
    3. Select caretakers for the horses that are part of our NHPP
    4. Create alliances throughout the equine community, tribal Nations, and other educational and historical organizations.
Visit www.sacredwaysanctuary.org to become a caretaker.

I have read that Native Americans had a spiritual connection with their horses; that their horse was a part of them. I can see that is definitely true at this sanctuary. God bless you for caring for these horses!! They are so very special!!

What I've learned about wildies is their FAMILY is vitally, crucially important. I would like to see it become policy with all mustang, feral and semi-feral rescues/organizations to make it a requirement that each adopter/caretaker takes at least TWO horses from the same family (pregnant mare doesn't count as 2). And that priority is given to the adopter who will take the most family members together. Just like we always try to place siblings in the same foster home - horse family bonds are just as important on all levels of heart, emotion, psyche, viscera. Once you have had, or spent time around, a family herd, you realize how HUGE this is and how inhumane it is to rip families apart.

These native breed horses are honestly more beautiful than the ones from the old world
I believe that native live stock shall be preserved as they are icons of North America and glimpses into the past unfortunately many native dog breeds are extinct along with many corn, beans and squash breeds
It amazes me of the genetic diversity
That was almost lost to European settlers.

You are correct. I am very close with your culture and I can't wait to introduce my daughter to her Spirit Horse.

Hello, yes this program is run by Indigenous people. Both Sacred Way Sanctuary and Sacred Healing Circle are both Indigenous owned and led by a team of diverse Indigenous Elders. You can visit their websites to learn more about their team. Thank you for the question.

Is it disrespectful to ride these ponies? I wish to be a caretaker for some of these sacred creatures in the future. I would only ride for pleasure, not show, and enjoy riding as a joining of our spirits in cooperation to explore new places together.

Hello, It's all about your relationship with the horse. Some don't want to be ridden, others you will find take to being trained in a good manner.
