For a man so young, Vegas is incredibly eloquent and incisive. His designs are fantastic- its a rare thing to see authenticity like this in the world of fashion. His aesthetic is reminiscent somehow of Vivienne Westwood, and I mean that in the best possible way. I love that he draws on his indigenous ancestry in his work. Impressive!
Brilliant energy from a visionary youth celebrating the fierce grace of living in alignment with himself and his values on a path of creative healing. Fashion as the language of authentic history woven onto the body. Loved this. Thank you.
This person was eloquent. I wonder if they might ever collaborate with Benjamin Bratt, who has spoken about activism as someone with Indigenous South American roots, or the US-based Indigenous clothing line, Ginew, which features some great androgynous jackets that become embossed at the elbows with wear. I respect the steps to build more foundations, and wish them well. These collaborative projects could be by correspondences or video calls. One idea could be a cameo video call for the show, "Reservation Dogs", which has at least two characters that address gender, as well. Some of the pieces of this interview could be woven into a conversation about activism between Vegas and the younger characters, like Willy Jack and most likely, Cheese.

I always felt weird about this - I’m a 1/3 indigenous, 1/3 African, and 1/3 European. Like many Latinos. It feels wrong to celebrate my entire heritage as 1/3 of it enslaved and murdered the other 2/3s. But you can’t undo what I am. The culture I relate to is a mix of all 3. I feel disingenuous going to a powwow and stating, “I’m indigenous!” and have two braids in my hair. Or go to Black Lives Matter rally and call them my people with my curls combed out into a fro. Nor do I feel white at all. But I have a lot of love for my heritage and would like to learn more as I have very close Native American and African roots. So how do you embrace those parts without it coming across as false? Not sure yet, but I love what he’s doing. Especially like most Latinos do not like to call themselves black or Indian but love to detail their nearest white ancestry 🧐
You are like me mixed with different cultures and people like us are the new human races. People like us can create new cultures without having to choose if we are black or white, brown or yellow. You aren't fake because you are mixed and there's nothing wrong with that and sadly in most cultures we will not be accepted because we are half an culture or quarter an culture. Because we aren't full blooded single race is when we are seen as a disgrace. But how do we know that these different cultures aren't mixed themselves? Claiming to be full blooded of any race would mean a whole bloodline full of inbreds. 😂 Mixed races is better because we will have no inbreeds to keep a bloodline alive! 😂

Your ancestors are always your ancestors. So you shouldn't feel any type of way to honor or connect with your Native or African ancestry. Those Native and Afro people are your people. I can understand feeling conflicted about the European part, but here's the thing, at the end of the day, they were just humans. There are villeins and virtuous people in every population group. Not all your African ancestors were nice people. Not all of your Native ancestors were good people. Not all of your European ancestors were villeins. You get what I'm saying? It took all those people for you to show up here. Without even one of them, you wouldn't exist. Try to find out who they were as much as you can. Be inspired by their positive attributes and learn from their mistakes so you don't repeat them. At the end of the day, even you not so nice ancestors are redeemed by the life that you live today and the contributions that you make to the World.
😔I'm sad when I think that some Ecuadorans actually feel embarrassed/ashamed of their indigenous roots, when I lived in Ecuador my friend was upset when I told her she and her family had beautiful indigenous features...she was genuinely angry and repulsed and it shocked me💔
It's repulsive actually. They want to be white so bad and identify with their perpetrators. All they have to do is look at each other you can see the indigenous in them.
500 years of doctrine will do that to you! People don’t realize that indigenous folks have been oppressed for so long that some have internalized that hate.
This person is so beautiful, I feel a heart connection with him, and so proud he has found and reclaimed his heritage and is a part of a rebalancing from past errors ~ when he said "...and people who love like me" at the end, I thought 'I hope all of us do, very very soon'.
I went through a similar experience learning I was Mexican. Being Mexican, we’re told to answer “white” or “Hispanic,” when in reality we’re not from Europe or Spain, but from the americas themselves. The race question isn’t even asked correctly in today’s society.
@@puidemare2337 , well, that’s what I said. But even post-white contact, most Mexicans are clearly still Native Americans or Native Americans mixed with white.
Love this! I'm Canadian and my parents were born in east Africa. They grew up in the UK before immigrating to Canada where I was born. We are of Indian decent . Shame and self hate are a normal part of our culture. It's a history of colonization. Many parallels to his experience.
I hope a lot more “Latinos” wake up! I’ve also been going through a spiritual awakening. Especially, now that my father passed away. He was dark skin and Indigenous. I’ve been trying to get in touch with my roots but it’s hard when you live in the states.

I've always identified as an indigenous person. My grandmother was full blooded Raramuri (Tarahumara). She encouraged all her children to embrace their indigenous identity. My aunt Connie was Ojibwe and she would take my brother and I to Pow Wows all the time when we were growing up. I literally have never identified as "Latino" or "Hispanic."

The story of Vegas is something that rlly needed to be told. Sharing this helped him on his journey of understanding how deep his true roots and meaning of existence actually are and by solving his own, he educate and inspire others to find their own. I honor his unique work and thank him dearly for all of this. Growing up as an indigenous women made me forget I was one in the first place. At a certain age I realized that indigenous people are one of the most ignored raced in the world, with nobody rlly talking about them not even during history class (I'm born and raised in Europe) and not even have contact with my family who are more likely to tell me about about my identity and culture. People around me always asked me if I'm from Cabo Verde or a mix of dutch and surinamese. Suriname is a multicultural country since a couple of centuries ago but before that it was populated by indigenous nations from South America. I'm mixed with the indigenous people from Suriname (The Caraib & Arawak), the enslaved people from Suriname (Afrika) and the indigenous people from Brazil. I'm sending my prayer to anyone who reading this no matter where you at on your journey I wish you guidance and peace

I reject Jesus as my Savior for my sins and will spend eternity in hell 🔥 📛 with nonbelievers and the devil, satan.

The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven. But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps: 1. Realize that you are a sinner who CAN'T SAVE YOURSELF from going to the lake of fire (forever) 🔥 based on your good deeds, your own philosophy, and other religions. 2. Realize that you need to believe in your heart ❤️ that ONLY Jesus Christ died for your sins. If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart ❤️ that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart ❤️ man believe unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Congratulations! 🎊 👏 After this life, you're on your way to heaven forever! ⬆️💯🥳

Vegas has so much wisdom. Much gratitude to them for truthsaying and cultural activism. My ancestral lineage is from the land now known as the Philippines. The names, history, traditions and culture of my people were systematically erased and destroyed by Spanish and American colonization. There are so many of us who are becoming by discovering and grounding ourselves in our indigeneity.

I relate so much to Vegas's story. I'm from Colombia and really resonating with reclaiming "indigenous". It's so complicated knowing I'm a mix of Spanish, African, and Indigenous.

I’m Nicaraguan born in the US and this year i started to accept that I was American not because i was born here but because of my indigenous roots i finally learned what it was that i had been missing in my identity. My Spanish heritage was hiding that from me because of the whole you are Latino you have to speak Spanish and I’m mestizo looking but I don’t speak Spanish 100% fluently i can understand more than i can speak but even then I am rejected by Latinos because I’m not Hispanic enough so for so long I never felt Hispanic enough or connected to my culture but it wasn’t until i really started to think about my native ancestors how they were forced to lose their language. I told my mom about how shouldn’t we be speaking our indigenous language not the language our ancestors were forced to learn. For so long I could never feel connected to my culture and I didn’t know why it was, like I knew i could never fit in but it wasn’t until I realized that all of North America is my ancestors home regardless of tribe this was my home. This is when I realized I want to start to identify and embracing indigenous.

As a native Hawaiian, I understand where he is coming from, as my people have gone through the same thing as the Native Americans. One thing I'd say he got wrong is the soybean comment. Yes, they are destroying land to grow soybeans, but 80% doesn't go to feed the cows. It is used for processed junk foods. Most package junk foods have some soy product in it. Whatever cannot be used to make junk food, goes to feed the cows. The cattle actually gets fed the remaining trash of the soybeans.
Bro I've been saying the same shit. Even European descent American too. They lost their culture along the way in America and bring new culture bc the America revolution. So they identify themselves Americans now. It's like most mexican (indi) they lost their indigenous roots culture bc colonization by Spain. And now call themselves "Mexican". Being Indigenous definitely is something to be aware and also proud of. The Native heritage and cultures must be preserved at all costs, they are important.
If you had just saw the face and not heard the voice, you couldn't be sure if it was a man or woman. Nothing wrong with that. This person is a beautiful human. And in indigenous culture throughout history the two-spirit male and two-spirit female have been completely normal and revered as members of the community. I consider myself Indigenous (Patawomeck/Chickahominy), even though I’m also Louisiana Creole and Cajun. I do get people who are mad that I don’t identify as AA. I applaud Vegas on his journey of self discovery which has lead to his cool, calm, collectiveness. To know thy self is to love thy self.
It’s ironic because most of us African Americans have indigenous and european ancestry ourselves even it’s a small amount of it. It’s very rare to find us that don’t
I no longer identify myself as an AA because many of us the so called AA are actually indigenous. Black people are the primordial beings of the planet. Africa is not the only continent in which we come from. We were in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. We’re the parents of humanity
That actually happened to me as well as I was filling out a form. Latin-Americans are literally a mixture of races, but we’re unaware of it until we move to the States where we are told that race is so important. I never identified myself as an indigenous until I was given no other option, but at the same time I feel like I’m misrepresenting myself as an indigenous for some reason. I don’t want to be told that I’m misrepresenting my race to get benefits 😢
This video is so beautiful and inspiring. Knowing who you are and were you come from is so important in standing in your identity. It gives you confidence in your history and culture, makes you realize how important you really are. I’m an African American and barely know my history and culture. Its so sad that so many Black Americans dont know where they come from. I pray they find their history and know who they are❤
I love his story. I know my family may be indigenous, but not sure. Once my cousin found a picture of my Great Grandma dressed as an Indian, but the photo didn't indicate any information. One day I will find out which tribe she was from.

Wow I’m Ecuadorian and I took a test and it said I’m Native American Indian but also I have European imagine how crazy, I was happy but still confused. I’m glad that I have indigenous blood
I have about 5 different ethnicities in me. I got tired of explaining my mixture to people, I have my own look, I dont look like any one race. And in all honesty, the pure individual races don't see me as one of them, I've been told that to my face. Anthropologists are to blame for this state of ambiguity that many of us feel and face....we are human beings...nothing more nothing less. I refuse to dissect my DNA for other people to put a label on me. I am aspiring to become a bonafide human being as I seek out my spiritual journey..
Absolutely! I am so blessed to have come upon this video. Finding the truth through 100’s of years of lies and forced colonialism. I am so happy you discovered who you are and see through the lies and brainwashing at such a young age. I too am a Indigenous Person. Keep it real Brother.
I am Ecuadorian too. I loved Vegas rendition of his definition of who he is. Beautiful. I think finding our identities it is a journey that one must go through with an open heart and mind, understanding that it will be not without painful revelations, as much as joyful ones. I was very curious about my DNA. I thought I would had more African in me. I have 3 %, but although my family has always feared having any indigenous ancestry, I always felt very connected to the land, the people, and I am still so curious. There are around 24 different indigenous peoples in Ecuador. I am 46% Ecuadorian Indigenous, according to Ancestry, still too generic for my curiosity. However, I feel much better to identify myself as a mestizae. Understanding that for sure, I am a very complex mix, with lots of struggle, but also lots and lots of joy, showing the journey of so many human beings who love each other hopefully, but who had to travel from one part of the world to the next. Ancestry identifies 10 different regions in my DNA. I would love to learn much more about them all. ❤ Your are so lovely VEGAS, keep going and keep learning more about your ancestry.
Where can we get that button? I'm 44, born in "Colombia," raised stateside, and gradually starting to define myself as Indigenous (I do look it), though I'm not mad at Spain for recognizing the Palestinian state!
Please do not let anything in life crush your spirit. May God or the Gods bless your journey. You are beautiful young man and pray you stay strong and proud ❤

Be inspired by their positive attributes and learn from their mistakes so you don't repeat them. At the end of the day, even you not so nice ancestors are redeemed by the life that you live today and the contributions that you make to the World.

😔I'm sad when I think that some Ecuadorans actually feel embarrassed/ashamed of their indigenous roots, when I lived in Ecuador my friend was upset when I told her she and her family had beautiful indigenous features...she was genuinely angry and repulsed and it shocked me💔
Not just Ecuadorians sadly ..
mind blowing
It's repulsive actually. They want to be white so bad and identify with their perpetrators. All they have to do is look at each other you can see the indigenous in them.
500 years of doctrine will do that to you! People don’t realize that indigenous folks have been oppressed for so long that some have internalized that hate.
That is latinamerica for you lol.
Most Mexicans I’ve seen look Native American or mixed
@@LluviadeOrugas They are Native Americans. People in the Americas, pre-white contact, are considered Native Americans
@@puidemare2337 , well, that’s what I said. But even post-white contact, most Mexicans are clearly still Native Americans or Native Americans mixed with white.
More important question is why is necessary to ask that? Race isn't even a valid concept according to genetics.
@@LluviadeOrugas How do you know you haven't seen white mexicans walking on the street, but you just don't know because you assume they are americans?

Bro I'm glad I ain't the only one too. Keep it up.
Dark skinned, indigenous men are so sexy. UUUFF!!
But a lot of Latinos actually are white. And wear Black hairstyles and say the N word under the excuse that they aren't white

I'm sending my prayer to anyone who reading this no matter where you at on your journey I wish you guidance and peace
we're you born in the us
The ancestors are proud of you! I'm proud of you! You are indigenous... Your who you are! An I luv who you are!!

Congrats and my deepest respect to Vegas your his identity's recognition journey. We peruvians have started to see it kinda clearer: were Andean people. Seeing a younger person with such wisdom and speaking the truth is very hopeful. Great video!
The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven.
But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps:

The fashion part is amazing! I struggled with it, too, at least in Asia, because "dressing up" tends to give me more challenges than if I just dress "casually". Oh well! Props for this video and him. Wonderful, thanks for sharing!

It’s ridiculous that the USA has this mentality that there is only one type of black person in America and they are all African American
@@trxphywaifaltYeah most AAs have like 20% European ancestry.
@@trxphywaifalt No. Only a small minority of African Americans have indigenous blood.

That actually happened to me as well as I was filling out a form. Latin-Americans are literally a mixture
of races, but we’re unaware of it until we move to the States where we are told that race is so important. I never identified myself as an indigenous until I was given no other option, but at the same time I feel like I’m misrepresenting myself as an indigenous for some reason. I don’t want to be told that I’m misrepresenting my race to get benefits 😢
