    Great video! Ive said it since day one, JUST LIMIT US TO AN ALTITUDE INSTEAD OF LOCKING US TO THE GROUND! At least when i buy my drone i can fly it somewhere like 50 feet instead of being locked. Not that hard!

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would certainly make more sense that the complete lock-down we are currently faced with, Garry! But you're preaching to the choir here...

      This is exactly where I am at. A brand-new Mini SE that I cannot verify operation on because DJI has made a nearby uncontrolled recreational airport an authorization zone and it is where I happen to live. It is mostly used for puddle jumpers, ultralights, gliders and skydiving.
      DJI needs to Stop dabbling in the regulatory business and stick to manufacturing. The regulatory agencies have no trouble mucking up their own business without any help.
      I just tried the field unlock and it would not bring to the unlock page when launch was attempted. I did make it that far this morning. So, I will keep trying but what a crock. Had I known all this crap was required with DJI products I would never have purchased their product.
      Update: Went back outside and gave it another shot and after 4 more tries I go the code for unlock and it worked. I just made a short flight around the yard to get the feel for the controls. It took me 5 days to get here but I feel much better now knowing the drone works. Thanks for your video. Even at 2 years old it was quite helpful.
      Now if we can get a break from this southern summer heat, it would be welcome.

    Thanks so much for the walkthrough, Don! These "extended altitude limits" are very inconvenient for certified pilots.

      Thanks, Hugh! Yes, and the fact that these zones don't correspond to the Transport Canada zones is a pain too. BTW, Drone Pilot Canada shows both views...so you can avoid surprises.

    Thank you Don for this very useful info for flying my Mini. Last summer I had difficulty unlocking a blue authorization zone at the time of my flight. Since it was an area I wanted to fly often (filming my dragon boat team), DJI gave me a link that allowed me to get an unlocking license for a given area defined by a center point and radius that is valid for one year.

    Very well done, flying my DJI RPAS inside a building that is located inside class C airspace proved to be impossible. My solution was an Autel EVO. I wish DJI would have an exemption for Advanced Certified pilots. Most of my flying is for emergency response, where time is of the essence, so DJI’s geofencing is a deal breaker. Again great video, I enjoy & appreciate the Canadian content & your app.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Claude! I know of one person who was able to obtain a full year custom unlock for a specific area (mind you, not a relatively high risk area, like a Class C CZ), and he is a Basic pilot. You may be able to arrange something like that...if you try it, let me know how you make out.

    • @clauderegnier2568
      @clauderegnier2568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DonJoyce Thank you for the prompt reply. My procedures do not need one more level of bureaucracy. As an Advanced pilot & as a Canadian I find it hard to accept the fact that a foreign entity supersedes Transport Canada’s authority. Like most drone pilots, I started with DJI products, which are well made, but there authority goes too far for professionals. When I arm my EVO2 I am confident that it will fly, as emergency response professionals are relying on the data that I am providing. That being said continue the good work, as I’m hungry for Canadian content. Fly safe & stay safe.

    Excellent video and it was interesting when you were getting the authorization at Carp. I will want to be doing some flying just at the edge of the Carp area where I think it is orange so I assume that I will have to go through this procedure. I have both a Mini 2 and an Air 2 and wondering if I'm able to do this with both or just the Mini 2? I might just have to go out there and give it a try if we get some warmer weather. Keep up your good work on keeping us all informed. I'm so new at this and finding your information the most valuable of any on TH-cam. I'm trying to do it all legally. LOL!!!

    Great videos, Don. Really appreciate the effort and detail you put into the Drone Pilot Canada app.
    I'm prepping to do a job inside the control zone of an Ontario airport (actually a photo/video shoot of the airport facilities for the company that operates it.) Class E airspace Ground to 3700. It's my first time doing NAVCANADA RPAS Auth of this type --> then DJI Custom Unlocking, so want to carefully understand the steps and process.
    With the unknown of how long NAVCANADA will take to authorize and then how long DJI will take to unlock makes for challenging planning.
    Hopefully will have the opportunity to document the experience to share down the road.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a cool shoot!! NAV CANADA is pretty fast...within a few hours generally is what I hear. And of course you can initiate the request from within Drone Pilot Canada. I've never done a DJI Custom Unlock, so that will be interesting to here. Personally, I would start with that and request a good sized time window. Surely the fact that you are doing this on behalf of the airport should make a compelling argument!

    Hi, Don! I just got a DJI Mini 2 for my 60th birthday. I've been fascinated by drones for quite awhile now and figured if I was ever going to get one, my 60th birthday was the time. I am trying to get up to speed on all the legal nuances so I am out reading forums and watching videos. Yours is one of the best I have found so far, but there is still a question that I have that no one ever seems to answer. When the unlock process asks you to check the boxes for unlocking an authorization zone, what exactly does it mean to be qualified or authorized to fly the drone in the area you are trying to unlock? Is it that you have passed some tests? Received LAANC authorization? Both? Something else? I want to make sure I am truthfully checking that box when presented with the screen, but I don't really know what it means. Thanks for any help you can provide!
    Note, I do live in the US so not sure if you are able to answer since you are from Canada, but hoping you will have some insight into the question. Thanks again!

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin! Great to hear you have found my video helpful! The thing to remember about the DJI geozone system is that it is only loosely tied to official national systems such as the FAA in the US. And it doesn't necessarily take into account temporary flight restrictions, such as around forest fires. So, when they ask, are you qualified/authorized to fly in the area, they mean "do you meet all of your country's normal regulatory restrictions for that area?". Hope that helps.

  • @KevinBacks
    @KevinBacks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Don! Why couldn't you have done this last summer?
    I tried to fly my Mini at the Iroquois St Lawrence Seaway Lock. I got the dreaded unable to take off message but didn't know that the down-and-in would trigger the unlock sequence. After many trips through all of the menu items, I was nearly ready to set the mini airborne without turning the props on. I think I also taught myself a few new expletives.
    The lock is near a registered (not certified airport) and I had flown there previously without having to unlock, so this unexpected turn of events added to my frustration level.
    I called the number for the airport to try to see if there were incoming aircraft or some event that caused the location to suddenly be a no-fly zone. The airport manager was pleasant enough, and totally uninformed. He works for the village and was quite convinced that no RPA traffic was allowed within 3NM of the airport under any circumstances.
    The Transport Canada map and Drone Pilot Canada App both told me I could fly with caution.
    So, now I know how to trigger the immediate self-unlock. I'm sure I've read the manual but I must have missed that bit.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol...and I went through exactly that the weekend before...had cameras and stuff all running...and stuck. Went home frustrated. Then the penny dropped and I tried again at my next opportunity. I had new expletives BOTH times!

    • @Cranedude666
      @Cranedude666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd be very careful flying around The Seaway or on their property. Depending on the MARSEC level...you could find yourself under serious scrutiny. I would get permission from the manager on duty.

    • @KevinBacks
      @KevinBacks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cranedude666 Thanks for the heads-up. The few times when I've flown there. There were no NOTAMS, the Transport Canada site selection tool showed it as ok for Basic ops, I did not enter the fenced area. I took off and landed in an area that is fully accessible to the public. I avoided the nesting ospreys. I did the whole thing where I wear a safety vest, put out pylons and (if there's anyone close by) I warn then that I am taking off and to stand clear - even with the Mavic Mini. As I moved to where I wanted to hover, I flew away from the lock - back about 100 metres and then circled around to sit outside the lock gates. One time, someone I assume to be the groundskeeper drove by in a golf cart while I was setting up. He didn't say anything - but he also didn't stop to ask what I was doing. He may not have realized I was getting ready to fly.
      I have seen threads where Americans mention the Seaway and other waterways as no-fly zones. I don't know how accurate their accounts were. Not to mention that I'm not flying in the US.
      I haven't been able to find any information related to restrictions against flying over the Canadian parts of the Seaway. I've even given the Marine Transportation Security Regulations (laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2004-144/index.html) a quick look. If you can point me to anything that's relevant, I would appreciate it. I want to make sure that I understand and respect the rule. I _really_ don't want to be one of those people who spends more time looking for loopholes than flying.

    • @KevinBacks
      @KevinBacks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DonJoyce Part of what confused me at Iroquois was the fact that my place in Ottawa was just over 5 km from the airport. I had unlocked the Mavic Mini MANY times when flying from my front walk. The unlock sequence was always triggered by trying to auto take-off. But it just DID NOT WORK that time. I can't remember, now, if I've had to do the cross sticks since then - I've just kind of gotten into the habit of starting the motors as part of my pre-flight routine.
      I picked up a used Phantom 4 here in Fredericton. I'll head over closer to the airport to see if the DJI GO 4 app behaves the same way. I can't fly there (Basic Ops only - for now).
      I left the rest of my fleet in Ottawa for now. Moving during a pandemic is complicated.

    Great video once again Don, thanks! I'm tired of the folks in Beijing stopping me from making legal flights. I travel a lot within Canada by road with my truck and trailer, last summer I was out of cellular range and grounded by the thought control police in China. The location was legal, I had current paper charts, I have an advanced license, no go! I won't be buying any more DJI products, this limitation was imposed on me after the purchase of my Mavic 2 Pro which is unfair, taking away capability as they did after the fact devalued my purchase, I want some money back. Can't wait for Sony's new drone, hopefully it isn't crippled for legal flights.

      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Bruce. I've been lucky and only been stopped once by a locked zone...but yes, it was very annoying because it was legal from a TC perspective. Hi, love the information you provide, it helped me pass my Basic Operation Licence in a breeze. I own a Mavic Air 2 and use it for real estate purposes, but have run into issues in nearby Kingston with the restricted air spaces over the city. So I bought a DJI Mini 2 with the impression that it was allowed to fly in Restricted air space (using common sense safe flight actions). However, I tried to operate my Mini 2 inside of a red 'bow tie" area of YGK airport, and the drone would not launch? So I went to unlock it, and it appears to want some sort of paper work or authorization document stating that I have permission to fly here. I tried unlock in the field using the "down and in" sticks launch , and with the launch touch button, as well as doing an online unlock from my PC. I was unable from either.
    My understanding of the sub 250g drones was they they could essentially fly anywhere except class F air space. Why am I not able to unlock the drone for flight where it is legally allowed to fly??

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dan! As noted in several of my videos, the DJI geo-zones are not related to Transport Canada regulatory zones, so they may lock you out of otherwise legal areas and vice versa. I recommend you try submitting whatever authorization docs they request (eg, a PDF of your basic license; and indicate that you are unlocking a sub250g drone in canada blah blah blah. They SHOULD unlock you. Let me know how you make out. BTW, they appear to have changed the unlock procedure somewhat since I did this video in 2020. I may provide an update at some point.

      Don, I just tried again to unlock a zone by uploading my licence and a general statement that I will adhere to CAR 900.06, and was rejected and told apply using the custom zone unlock instead. So I did it again as a Custom unlock and now you have to draw a circle over your proposed flight area and then input a flight altitude that I set at 100 ft, and again uploaded the same document and statement, and this time it was approved. WHen I open up my Fly App and go to "unlock geo zone" I see an unlock licence that I can import into the aircraft. This was all done on the PC at home. Im not sure if it's possible from the app on the spot? And I have yet to actually try to apply the licence as it's set for tomorrow. Just thought you might like to know how it went. Thanks again!!

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the update....so you needed to do a Custom Unlock, and supply both your basic license and a statement of compliance to 900.06. I wonder if just the statement of compliance to 900.06 would have been sufficient (along with some statement about sub250g drones being exempt from other TC regulations)? Maybe next time! I'm sure now that you have an unlock license, you will be fine. And no, you can't do a custom unlock from the app on the spot...unfortunately.

    • @danfleuryphotography
      @danfleuryphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DonJoyce yes the custom unlock was the type that worked. Next time I’ll put my statement of compliance in the details of the request field but It does still want ‘something’ uploaded as it says it’s required if you submit without an upload. I’ll see how it goes next time. 😊

So at time of flight having a mobile device with internet is all ones needs for blue auth zones and going thru a few checkbox clicks. Still too many nanny functions. Sub 250g drones should not need this nonsense at all. I'm okay with all drone operators requiring a license (even 250g) so that basic understanding of Transport Canada rules on where one can fly and not fly is understood like Class F demonstrated in the video. However, we don't need all this electronic nanny garbage. We will likely get additions to Transport Canada rules such as adding Remote ID and ruining the FPV and Camera drone hobbies even more.

      If you are not in one of the coloured zones, then you won't need to unlock and you'll be fine.

      Sorry to hear you guys are having troubles! Yes, the unlock procedure has apparently changed a bit since I did this video, but the principles are the same. Th Flight Controller Serial Number is shown in the app. I show you where in this video. Good luck!

    thank you for the video! I am having an issue where my mini se started giving me a warning saying Unable To Take Off, since day before yesterday and I cannot get it off. Not sure what's going on, because my Mavic Pro does not give me the same message. I am not in a restricted area. Any recommendations?

      Hi Tracy! I would check that you have the latest firmware (there was a mini 2 fw update recently...1.04...might be something similar on the Mini se. Start everything up where you have good wifi and check under the About menu. Otherwise, possibly GPS issue...make sure you have clear view of the sky. Try calibrating Compass and imu. Hope that helps.

    I got my mini 2 yesterday. And I happened to live in a authorized zone, because of a small airport near by. I did exactly what you did and it was unlocked. It didn't give me an altitude limit or whatsoever but I do know that going higher could be a problem since training pilots fly low around here.
    Should I be worried of anything else?

      @DonJoyce  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Javier! You should probably watch at least this video about the Mini 2 and Canadian regulations, and be aware that the DJI zones do not reflect our laws: th-cam.com/video/K7H2TsEOlMw/w-d-xo.html

      Oh, ok...no worries. While the Canadian laws are quite a bit more strict than US regulations, many of the same principles apply. And I would be surprised if DJI matches the US restricted zones and control zones.

      Sorry, I don't! My only advice is to remember that a drone is just one more tool in your journalism kitbag...otherwise all the same principles apply!

    So i am unclear about unlocking the Authorization zones. Do i have get approval from an app like Kittyhawk before flying in the auth zone or does unlocking it give you authorization by having a DJI account?

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark. Sounds like you are in the US, since you mention the Kittyhawk app. The DJI fly-safe zones and FAA zones are obviously related, but the unlocks/authorizations are completely separate. You need the LANCC authorization to LEGALLY fly, but you also may need the DJI unlock to physically launch the drone.
