Alien, forms train: body structure, foundation alignment and mechanics; flexibility, explosive power, cardiovascular conditioning and overall conditioning... and lastly individual fighting techniques. Because forms are anywhere from 24 to 128 or more techniques strung together. Often in smaller batches of 3. Because fighting isn't someone throws a strike and you block and hit... done. But I'm getting ahead. Because as Joseph pointed out: None of that matters much if you don't do continuous sparring. Preferably working up to medium full contact with no protection except for light gloves and groin. Real Kung Fu won't look like the forms. It will look like basic MMA, Muay Thai or Kickboxing with throws. So who do we do the forms, right? Because they're fun. Lol nah I mean that is honestly part of it but really because they're an excellent solo practice. Because they train all those things I listed above and more. They're shadowboxing that keeps tradition passed on from 300 to in a few cases a thousand years ago. They're excellent conditioning with techniques built in. Very efficient. Got to do realistic 2 person drills and hard continuous sparring though. Else you're just doing moderate gymnastics.
Because they never learned how to actually fight. They only did the forms. This is what happens. Imagine if in boxing you ONLY did shadows boxing and hit pads but NEVER sparred. It would be ugly too.
+Teddy Fuse Okay, these were two Kung Fu masters. Not a situation which provided either with a lot of opportunity for fancy moves or pretty flourishes. Regardless, if you had stepped into that ring, I seriously doubt you would have lasted even a minute with either of them. Same with your "untrained street fighters."
***** I'm not talking about "fancy moves" or "pretty flourishes". I'm talking about combat efficiency. I could care less for pretty jump kicks and movie fighting. Also, I have trained Kung Fu for 2 years, Boxing for 2 years, and Muay Thai for a half of a year, and from what I see here, I could more than hold my own with both of them. I understand that fighting isn't pretty neither is it supposed to be, but a Kung Fu master should be one of the most efficient regarding combat, they lack even the most basic of skills. It's really underwhelming to me. If you see any dangerous and effective strikes or good techniques then please shed some light on what's going on in the video.
Thank goodness you posted this , otherwise the art of hit-liek-child- fu would have been lost in history forever! Thank you for saving this old ancient art.
The problem isn't the practitioners but the way in which many Kung fu practitioners train. Some train so hard with so little sparring that they never actually develop any fighting instincts. Not to say that Kung fu is an effective art, it is very effective when trained correctly. But years of punching air will get you no where quickly in a street fight.
Now after we watched this drunk girls fighting imagine those guys fighting for real with some boxers from same times more or less like Dampsey, Marciano,Louis,Patterson,Brown,Sugar Ray etc.
Sean Russell whoa. wait a second. Not a fair analogy since Cung Le studied practical martial arts like sanshou, kickboxing and grappling. Not hokey five animal styles, or other styles imitating monkeys, mantids, and snakes. Humans need to learn to fight as humans. Trying to imitate tigers and cranes is pointless since we are not built like that for starters. We have different physiology and reflexes and different Kinetics. That's why people who study stylized martial arts with difficult stances and poses deteriorate into haymaker punches and fighting like little children because they have never learned the punches optimized for humans like a jab and right cross. Let's also establish some parameters. First many Kung Fu people want to disown this vid as bad Kung Fu but look at the news coverage, look at the crowd. Sorry but this clip represents typical Hong Kong Kung Fu in the 50's. Now go look at the Helio Gracie vs Kimura fight around the same era. They fight exactly how they trained in their style. They don't toss it all out the window. Why? Because their styles work because it's optimized for human Kinetics. Before you think I'm dumping on Kung Fu I did it for many years. wing chun and Northern mantis and sport wushu. I still love it as they are beautiful to watch but let me assure you that kickboxing and BJJ are far more effective for real fighting. I've done them all so I have cred to criticize. There's a reason why the late James Coburn - friend, student, and collaborator of Bruce Lee - said that the last time he spoke to Bruce Lee about martial arts that Lee referred to Hong Kong Kung Fu as "shit" and told Coburn he preferred Japanese grappling arts and specifically mentioned judo, jujitsu, and aikido. If you think I'm making this up Google James Coburn + Hollywood Interview + Bruce Lee and you'll find the article. But brace yourself as you'll never be able to watch The Chinese Connection, or Return of the Dragon the same again knowing that the god of Kung Fu Bruce Lee denounced Kung Fu and preferred Japanese grappling styles, and boxing.
As a chinese martial arts practitioner .. it embarrases me to see this. Can't believe all the idiot making excuses for them. More sifus need to put their students under real combat stress until then anything they learn, no matter how good the techniques, goes out the window as they can't apply what they learn in the heat of the moment
There's a Bruce Lee audio conversation with friend and student Dan Lee that starts with him recounting some Tai Chi/kung fu competition/ tournament/fight/whatever he went to, I think with some foreign friends, which I took to mean they had no idea what they were supposed to be seeing, and seeing it, sounds like Bruce was pretty fucking embarrassed for his art and his people. "You have offended my family...and you have offended a Shaolin temple."
Geez, talk about romanticising the past. I guess that's what happens when you learn Kung Fu as forms without fighting. But these guys probably represented family styles that lost touch.
I don't think this was reaI. think it was their equivalent to the fake wrestling which we have on American television. First of all, nobody was bleeding. Secondly, no man punches like that.
I have not laughed so hard in a long time, the special sound effects are hilarious, who ever made this watched kung Fu movies and made this real funny.
Historically, lots of Asian martial arts were developed to help ordinary people face well equiped armies!! So, I think they were efficient at that time!!! However, I think these martial arts lost their souls when moving to the closed training rooms! The focus became on fantasy!! Who knows!!!
Ok, I'm really not trying to be a troll. But are we watching Chinese kung fu? If a helicopter plopped an American into the audience in 1954, would they be inspired to learn this "art"? I'm not seeing it. There's got to be something I'm missing here.
This is NOT a tournament. This is only two amateurs fighting in a fund raising match. What are their credentials? If they are true masters, then they are not showing their skills.
AMAZING VITAGE FILM. At :40 sec. you can see Eagle Claw Master Lau Fat Man showing Eagle Claw techniques with a partner. The later fight has produced some controversy. Many have said that the the Masters (a Tai Chi and a White Crane Master) are very sloppy. Doesn't look like the movies. Let's look a little deeper. Perhaps compared to modern tournament or cage fighting without the western boxing footwork, to the untrained eye may indeed look sloppy. Keep in mind, these were Kung Fu Masters trained to down their opponents with one or two shots. but not necessarily athletes or trained fighters. This was a Lei Tai stage type fight, no protection or rules often used for challenges between school and Masters. Lot's of gambling. Notice right at the first exchange that the Crane fighter has his nose broken and is bleeding seen throughout. Also, notice the several connections made with these long range powerful strikes which are typical of a White Crane fighter. All in all, it's pretty brutal. Manny of the Crane fighters techniques resemble Choi Lay Fut which might actually be taught under one roof. So sloppy? Perhaps considering what we are used to seeing. I find it fascinating to note that the Tai Chi Master was the more violent of the two. I assure you that if one of those long arm punches actually reaches your jaw, it's gonna leave a mark. I have fought full contact with my Si Fu quite a bit. He broke my nose and dislocated my jaw. Then taught me Iron Palm. He was ruthless, merciless and in very little ways resembled this. But great to see Lau Fat Man moving.
I now understand why Chinese Kung Fu movies have the fighters floating in the air, hitting each other dozens of times a few seconds, and kicking so hard the fighters flip in the air....it's because they have to deal with reality and it's too much for them. This was just so laughable. 😂
Dude this was actually very interesting to watch, at first it was a bit silly but then i saw the fu in it, and besides not keeping their hands up lol it was pretty much a modern day fight.
😂 hold up a minute in .I can't help to think . No these 2 didn't just leave the office . And head straight to a Kung Fu tournament. To fight one another...
This is so weird... 🤔 Even though the subtitles are attempting to spin a narrative about a charity exhibition bout between "kung fu masters" (presumably following the "announcer"), and the "gong cards" are saying "Round 1," "Round 2" etc. ...actually, it is a randomly edited film with patchwork parts from different places, events, people, all patchworked together around a "full contact" fight story between two guys in the ring-- and the "fight" footage itself being the same 2-3 minutes of footage chopped up and played over and over in random order. I don't kwow what it is, or what the purpose of the film was... but one thing is sure: this is not an actual "full contact kung fu fight from 1954." wow their technique is incredible. just like how I used to fight when I was 5 years old.
looks like child fight
but i think that is one of technique in kung fu lol
Dave right right right
Lol
Dave lol
super lol
It's amazing that Kung Fu took off in such a big way. Thank God for Kung Fu movies to make it look good.
i don't get it, is it against the rules to keep a guard up?
So this is where the windmill technique was developed.
I seriously don't understand why their forms are beautiful and their fighting skills are totally different. lmao.
Not enough contact sparring

NO. Most kids on the street could kick the crap out of these guys. This is pathetic. The masters cannot fight. Don't deny the obvious.
true. i am from chicago and have seen and been in many fights. most street fighters.... good ones can easily kick their asses
These guys couldnt even beat themselves up.

😂😂😂
But fr kung fu is not weak these guys have 0 skill
I imagine they got their master ranking from the back of a cereal box.
I recognize a lot of barfight quan. I don't recognize the turning your back and running from any style though..
I'm sure mayweather can show you some of that second technique mate
mayweather never turned his back and ran like these guys did.. so shut your mouth..
That's advanced technique. You learn it when you reach sage levels. Omnitofah.

Sanda isn´t kung fu, it´s just a kickboxing system created recently by the Chinese military,
no hate but where are the FORMS? the TIGER,SNAKE or DRAGON FORMS according to chinese movies..
I also learned the art of kung fu watching movies as a kid. It didn't quite work out as I imagined.
Thanks for this rare clip. It's extremely hilarious.
They didn't test their martial arts, precisely as Bruce said
where is the kung fu?

how Chinese actually fight back in the days, not so cool huh
both fighters are really old. good video!
+Sai Fernandez no shit
With bare fists and without safety equippement? Ouch!
Exactly why they were mostly striking with their forearms
2:07 tell me that’s not hitler 9 years after the war.
