I’m an NYC teacher and I became a plant parent/ enthusiast during lockdown. I have brought my love for plants to my classroom and even have an after school club. 35 plants in my classroom and the kids love it!
My mom has 120 indoor plants and her yard is a freaking jungle. People stop their cars along the highway to talk to her when she's outside. When I explain to someone where my parents live, they almost always ask, "the house with all the flowers and stuff?" She doesn't have the high-tech stuff in the video though, she just makes her own compost, and uses manure...and a green thumb! 😂❤
I LOVE THIS SEGMENT. I have a house full of plants and always have. Watering day is a big deal and today is a plant day for me. Going to start some seeds (have lots of grow lights and one small fridge size unit that is light and heat controlled on a timer. That will give the seeds the perfect start.
I love this, I have been wanting to start a plant collection since forever just would always ignore the desire, this coverage of plants and its growth in the market motivates me to get inspired and get indoor planting.
I am an avid collector! Have my own greenhouse in my back yard but I would NEVER pay that much for a plant, neither would I allow someone to spend that kind of money. It makes no sense when these plants are easily propagated. Charge less for a smaller prop, but that much money for a plant? Lord! I understand how rare and accessible it was, but man! Us plant people are crazy. LOL. But anyway, awesome story! I am from Hawaii as well and being Filipino, nature and foliage is in my blood!
I agree completely. Have had plants for about 60 years and would never spend too much on a plant. I get the smaller versions that grow quickly enough. Also getting into seed more now. Have indoor grow lights in the house and one the size of a mini fridge with glass front door that is light and temperature timer controlled. I love it!
Love this segment. My mother was a plant lover and her garden was small but beautiful. I’m the same way. My garden if I say so myself is gorgeous. All my neighbors are jealous. I have all Perennial’s expect for my hanging baskets. Inside I have about 25 to 30 house plants. I propagate and give them away. My favorite ones so far are monstera and philodendron because they are growing so big. Plants and gardening make me happy relax’s me. I love it
I love cacti and put them in my garden after tempering on my porch for a few weeks, then they go in my front garden and my neighbors or visitors passing by enjoy them too. If I’m in my yard they always want to know what they are and how I get them to grow so beautiful and I tell them mostly they they get watered from my Lord from the rain that he provides but about once a month I feed them. They can’t believe it. After very little water inside for the winter I don’t water them but maybe 2 or 3 times, but when they go out I water and feed them and then they get to enjoy the summer sun and rain.
Good for you. I just bought one of those since I haven't had one for years. Not my favorite though since I tend towards flowering plants that bloom like crazy. Learn about making your own from the plants you have so you have spares. Lots of information on TH-cam on how to do that. Don't overwater your plant.
I have been concentrating on orchids lately. I bought a good stash at Mother's Day plant sales in a place like Walmart last early May and they are still blooming (from the original stalk - not new shoot). I am stumped that they are still blooming like crazy. They are not even under my grow lights and I do not pay special attention to them either. Start with smaller plants and work your way up.
Great video. It is great to collect them but you have to do your research about lighting and watering. Every plants are different. I own 20 plants. I have 4 types of pothos which they easy to care plus I like the trailing.
I have a succulent care platform, Sucs for You!, and my audience nearly doubled during Covid. A main interest of collectors is learning how to propagate them to sell, gift, or just have more of :)
Because of us, plants lovers. Rare plants will not be rare and we even hybridized new plants. And I’m sure some of nearly extinct plants become domesticated. I’m not just planting them, I cut and propagate them and give some to my friend too and hope every one I know love to grow them too.
Just my opinion: It certainly helps add to the annual houseplant revenue when shops, such as the one shown in Seattle, are BOUGIE as hell… their plants all mostly come with a fairly astronomical price tag. 😂 So even though they do good business, k don’t think expensive plant "boutiques" are ay the forefront of the plant sales increase. Twice as many consumers, if not more, are buying equally healthy plants from other sources, at more accessible prices and availability. Not only big box stores or grocery stores. There’s Etsy, eBay, and local plant groups and FB plant swaps galore. I’ve seen the videos & website for the Seattle store, and they’re clearly catering to collectors & ‘aficionados’ of RARE plants. It’s a specialty boutique, is what I’m saying. And that’s great, but it’s simply not in the budget or desire for most people to spend money there. Especially novice gardeners who might neglect or overwater a plant to death. Even the "common" plants sold there are rather steeply priced, when the exact same plant can be found (and possibly bigger or in multiple sizes/prices) at a number of other businesses. And if the issue is supporting local over big box stores, well, have fun with that, millionaires! Jk 😂 All I’m saying is these sort of specialty shops are not the leaders of the plant trade, necessarily. Shops or Etsy vendors that sell single-LEAF cuttings of _Monstera adansonii_ variegata for $2k because it’s so finicky and rare? High risk of the cutting dying due to a lack of chlorophyll?? Yeah, that’s not adding to the overall revenue in a considerable way, even if people choose to purchase these items.
I have large areas of plant grow lights and do put some veggies and things like strawberries in between other flowering plants. Vowed to grow iceberg lettuce this year inside since during Covid the price went to $13.00 for a measly head. Now they are just under $6.00 here which is crazy! It is also fun to grow things like alfalfa sprouts for greenery in salads and sandwiches.
Yeah I feel like it’s something that they should have at least approached for a free seconds in this segment. They have already aired segments on it but I do think that we have to make sure people know at least the basics that their plants could be coming through nefarious means if they are not vigilant(I guess if they care too).
I’ve recently gotten into plants over the last year and a half and I have over 350 in my home. There’s a downside as a collector, it’s definitely an addiction and can take over your life.
None of the plants here are rare, the humidity and temp changes leaf colors. We have hundreds of cuttings of the same mom plant and all are different. You are god to that plant when growing indoors and unless each plant has it's own environment they will all "morph" to adapt. Throw some UV A, B and C and organize each plant to locality specific and watch the difference. Great idea anybody can do. Idk why more people dont do it! ❤
A lot of the plants are poached from sensitive environments like deserts and rainforests. It upsets the balance of nature, colonizes native lands with international conglomerates, and destabilizes local environments with invasive species. Please shop local, and try to plant native often 🙏
Live house plants to me don't look well. I think most of them just look like they don't want to be there. And you're so limited as to what can be grown. I have a collection of large artifical palms, cacti, yuccas and other succulents which bring me just as much joy as if they were real (well, almost) and last forever.
Having some plants are good but just don't have too many indoors because the plants inhale oxygen at night as well so you don't want to feel not enough oxygen for yourself
That's not how it works. If it was, no one who's ever gone camping in the woods would've survived. Humanity would not exist. There's a field of study called Botany. You should look into it.
They're in demand since so many of these plants are low maintenance and natural air purifiers. Personally, I think peace lilies are the most beautiful when in bloom.🪴

That’s wonderful!
Omg I would befriend her but I live in Germany. 🪴🪴🤓🪴 sending hugs from a plant parent to another
CBS thanks for this segment! Long overdue. There are sooo many plant-heads and plant-tubers that love plants.
My joy is when I see happy faces of friends and patients when I give cuttings or mother plants
Plant parent here 🙋🏽♀️

Plants are lifeand joy❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love my plants. One of them I've had for 15 years. So yeah I'm serious about my plant babies 😂💚
Got into plants this year and I loved seeing my pothos grow every day!

They obviously didn’t understand that those expensive plants can’t be bought as seeds or plants at Home Depot lol
Been from them for years all through online and have never had any issues 100% love them
Beautiful plants

Which zone are you in?
I literally purchased my 1st indoor plant (a Snake Plant) a little over a week ago. I be adding 3 more next week. Guess I'm now a Plant Dad? 🤔 lol

@islandgal500 Thanks. That thought had crossed my mind. One of my next plants will be an orchid. Love those...

@@islandgal500Whoa, that's pretty awesome. Thanks for the tips!

Geraniums is what I have. Just turned my 4 plants into 13 with repotting and dividing. They are all blooming right now so pretty.

I love nature. I love my plants. I love the challenge.

Love everything about this! …minus the narrator’s puns. 10+ is too many

I am a collector and seller in Canada and would love to open my own shop, but rent is sooo expensive! How is it possible?!
Sell them online or from your house
I grow succulent bonsais (Portulacaria Afra), aroid plants like Monstera Deliciosa.
Plants are amazing
Good story
which one of those you can eat?

"Rare" plants are often poached from National Parks and elsewhere to sell in places like this.

Invest in grow lights ;)

Plant industry is crashing this year though.
It's still coming down from the cov*d bubble but it's still higher than pre-cov*d levels isn't it?
I have a cinnamon tree in my room. I live in Monterrey (close to southern Texas)

I love plants however un-natural species shouldn’t be allowed to be priced sky high.
Do they sell edible medicinal plants? Ty
“… nothing short of new”? Do you know what that means?
A lot of the plants are poached from sensitive environments like deserts and rainforests. It upsets the balance of nature, colonizes native lands with international conglomerates, and destabilizes local environments with invasive species.

$6000 and not getting a healthy 🍓🍑 fruits
🧠
Some people spend money in art to decorate their homes, some spemd in plants
Plants easily sell for hundreds to thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars!
I have a hard time believing only $6,000 in 3 years… maybe I just have a problem 😂
Pricey? yeah of course thats why they are in business 😂😂... along with the joy of it..
But yet you buy expensive close food and entertainment that only last a short time.
Watch out for mold biotoxin illness from all those indoor plants!

Glad for you on the second part, but maybe you just haven't been invited into the home of someone who is serious about their houseplants.
Plant Gheys™️
How did she squeeze into that dress 👗

Go to school and get educated. You are 100% wrong. Damn!
