Whats Inside a Mattress - Open Spring Materials

  • Salvage & repurpose materials for DIY projects! Inside a full size Open Spring Mattress you will find some great FREE material / fabric, felt / wool insulation, polyfoam padding and loads of Free steel (3 gauges). This was great source for items to repurpose for DIY projects, crafts and so much more. Throughout the video I show multiple ways to accomplish the same result (i.e. deconstructing specific parts) but the method that I came up with in the 2nd half of the video to remove helicals was actually quite fun... and fast. The polyfoam as well as the insulation material can be perfect for many projects where a protective padding is needed or merely repurposed as packing material to protect fragile items before shipping them off somewhere. There are hundreds of springs in this thing; Bonnell coils that are hour glass shaped and made of steel. The border rod is heavy gauge steel and the helicals are the lightest gauge in this mattress.
    Anytime I have something that may be headed for the trash or recycling I tend to dig in and take it apart first. I love to see how things are made and love even more seeing what I can make with the parts that I find inside. Plus, this was much more satisfying than trying to schedule a pick up for bulky items.

    Awesome video! I deconstructed a mattress down to the springs today, rather than paying $50 to have it hauled to the dump. This is a helpful video to process the metal bit. I'm thinking of making a sculpture for the yard 😁

    People are willing to pay good money for "RUSTY" springs...... so add a solution or leave out in a bucket to rust so they can be use in crafts. Now I know what to do with my old mattress.... Thanks for the video.

    Wrapped coils are even easier. I deconstructed a mid-high end mattress a couple of nights ago and was amazed at how easy it was. Put it all into garbage bags and walked it over to my dumpster. There's no way I'm going to pay someone to do something so simple and easy.

    I looked up how to remove the springs from a mattress as I saw a pinterest post about how to make your own sofa. Some guy made an industrial style sofa with some similar materials to this video, and he used the intact mattress springs. He cut it to size, though. Really creative way to save money and reuse materials.

    I ended up here while looking for a name for what you are calling the "insulating" layers. I got curious like you, and after purchasing a new mattress I deconstructed the old one... and with my arthritic hands and not as clever as you, it was a heck of a job.
    I left the spring assembly whole for a recycler to confiscate, trashed the more beat-up insulator layer, and added the other one (after airing out for a few days) along with the top cover (it had its foam layer attached) above my cheap, not very thick firm new mattress. With these extra layers added on, this is now the most comfortable mattress I've had. It is topped with a quality mattress cover and now of a respectable thickness. I trust this only 5-year warranty mattress will have added life, as the springs will take less of a beating now.

    You can shred the foam and put it inside cut squares of the poly material to make dog beds and donate to the local animal shelter. You can use the coils as plant holders to create a living wall.

      Hello! I use the thing the mattress sits upon. Wooden with the metal coils. I never thought of using the coils in the mattress though hmmmmmm I bet I could find a use for those. Anyway, the box spring works great! I just pound 2 big wooden stakes into the ground between the frame and it stands up with no problems. I grew 6 foot tall purple snow peas on a queen sized one and 3 different dry soup beans on the others. They didn't fall over from the weight or anything. They even stayed up thru the summer thunderstorms. I have 3 more ready to go for next year. I got them for free at a place that sells beds. They put all the old ones they bring back from customer deliveries out behind their building and anyone can help themselves. They don't mind because that's less they have to pay to take to the dump.

    Your video was wonderful sir, thank you for your clever ideas!!! ... I am an "Up!Cycle" crafter; therefore, here are a few items which may be made from the trash materials: FABRIC & FELT ~ Simple Tote Bags, Animal & Shapes Ornaments (sheep, bunny, bear, heart, flower, etc), the FELT would make lovely Prim Doll or Gingerbread Man Ornies or use it to make new felt inserts for inside your shoes and boots. POLY FOAM ~ Cut squares to make "flat sponges" and use them for cleaning or painting items. COILS ~ These make great little Christmas Trees and can be painted to look like "rusty trees" if they’re used in Prim crafts. HELICALS ~ Use them as flower stems or as little pumpkin tendrils. BORDER RODS ~ May be attached with heavy staples, twine or rope to a wooden picture frame as a decoration, or bent into cute shapes as "hanging" ornaments or decorations; such as, bend it into a heart shape and hang it with a ribbon, twine or rope. Rods may be formed into a circle to make a wreath, which may be decorated with many styles and themes ... Enjoy these "Up!Cycle" ideas and have fun creating new things with these otherwise disposable parts!!! 04/06/17

    The felt can be used to deaden sound or insulate a wall very effectively with a light dusting of boric acid. Also can be cut in strips to wrap greenhouse or high tunnel pvc or steel supports to lengthen the plastic life. The border steel rod is very useful for lots of welding projects. I use the coils in tact to cage in my chickens mobile coop. really frustrating to raccoons and hawks. I use the ticking as a primary leaf and debris water filter on my rain barrels. If you get the initial thread started right it will pull out just like a grain sack. That leaves the border tack fabric as one piece - a very strong length of cordage.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the ideas! Besides pest control is there another purpose for using the boric acid? I have another mattress to deconstruct so I am also going to try the "grain sack" idea for that pesky border / ticking. Thank you for watching and for the suggestions!!

    thanks for the video. i have a worn out open spring single sided(no padding on bottom) mattress. im thinking about cutting open the bottom cover and restretching the coil springs. how much are you able to stretch those springs out of shape? or do they just spring back to the same shape?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question which I am guessing is cuz you have a fun idea to do with a stretched out spring. You can stretch them out of shape with enough pull. Depending upon what you want to accomplish with them some added heat can help to speed the process (i.e. propane torch).

    • @cl8ff
      @cl8ff 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i just want to rehab the mattress, re-stiffen up the springs.

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great idea but I think it might be allot of work for the results. 1st you would have to completely expose all springs (removing allot of materials that would be challenging to put back cleanly). 2nd step would be ensuring that you can freely stretch out all of the springs at the same time (I think this would require some mechanical intervention). 3rd step would be putting it all back together so that it was clean and safe (beyond my expertise for sure). All of that said, I am still intrigued to know if it could be done and how much work it would take. I'd love to hear what you decide to do.
      Would love for anyone else to weigh in on the idea too!

    I would like to repurpose my mattress but the springs are nailed to a wooden base in stead of an insulator ,how do you suggest I remove the springs in my case (without damaging the wood )?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes they are nailed down with a heavy duty staple gun / staples. When they are the "staples" I either pry them up with a large, flat head screwdriver or clip them in the middle with large wire cutters. For pieces left in the wood you can use pliers to pull them straight out without damaging the wood. I have a video where I take apart a box spring and there were tons of those!
      Are yours held in place with the staple type hardware?

    • @pinkgiggieraph260

      Dialed In DIY yes the springs are held by staplers

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A pair of pliers may be all that you need. Use them to grab a staple and see if they will pull straight up without having to pry against the wood.
