I remember my Mom renting this game at Wegmans grocery store in Buffalo N.Y. I was so stoked! I'd get to rent a game every week it was awesome. I miss those days!
Hell yeah the day’s of video rentals on the grocery store!
Yoo! My dad used to rent this game at the Wegmans in Newark, NY for $2.14 haha
My grandfather loved to play this game when we got an NES. This game always reminds me of him. RIP Poppy. Love you.
This was the only Nintendo game my dad ever played other than Mario once or twice. He thought it was great and would sometimes ask my brother or I to set it up for him to play on weekends.
He died of poor taste
Same my dad played the shit out of this game
K LOL lklk

Another tip or tutorial that I thought I would mention that you never mentioned in here.
Once you get your power level maxed to 9, everytime you go back over to the dock it gives you an extra strobe so you can just keep going back and forth getting extra strobes. It doesn't seem like the conch she'll price increases eath time you go back and forth but it's 10 conch shells each time.
This can definitely help when trying to beat the ending level of Jaws as it can be very frustrating like you said. It's all about precise movement. Having those extra strobes can actually make it easier because you can use The Strokes before he even arrives up to the front of the screen which helps make it so you can kind of stay more centered with Jaws easier.
But those hidden secrets with a sound test and everything like you said I had no idea those even existed, thanks for sharing!
I lost my older brother 5 years ago. He'd be 41 and I'm 38. So growing up in the 80's he had older brother privilege (albeit "nicely") to pick the video games. This was one of our ultimate favorites but alas we never beat it so its nice to see it picked apart and see where we went wrong. In this age where it seems that my generation is recalling to old favorites really makes it a joy to watch and also listen to because the music is just as important. Like being on the couch with my brother again playing video games. Thank you so much for your vids!
Sorry to hear about your brother Cesar. Great to hear the videos bring back good memories.👊
Sorry to hear about your bro. You should complete the game now in his memory.
Cesar, I’m sorry to hear of your brothers passing. Generation gap gaming, nice of you to reply to his post.....you gained a sub!
🍺😎👍
I'm sorry about your brothers passing, I can appreciate your memories about him. This game was so hard, and I did not know by swimming near the surface of the water you wouldn't die. but after watching this it's totally doable, and I need to get another copy of this JAWS game. Peace.
My condolences bro
I was 6 when the game came out. Between me and my 2 younger brothers we thought with the simplicity of the game we we be able to outmaneuver Jaws and eventually wear his health out. Didn’t know it would be 1,000 hits and didn’t know about the levels due to no manual from renting it. All we got was the tracking device.
It was a lot of fun taking turns trying to bring his health down and one of only handfuls of games we worked together on. Super C and Toejam & Earl would make the list also.
I just bought an arcade machine with Pandora Box DX, so I now have the chance at age 41 to bring down the big guy. Probably going to get a few levels in and go after Jaws the way we used to for old times sake.
Thanks for the video! I thoroughly enjoyed it and the sentimental comments on this channel. Can’t wait to finally beat the game after all this time!
Regards
I never forget renting this game back in the 80’s and I brought it to my friends house for a sleepover. And his parents ended up hogging the controller and not letting us play lol
I played this one many times. I never realized you could power up when I was a kid.
But I was still able on occasion to land those 1024+ hits on Jaws and get to the final scene.
No you didn't, he heals some health when you leave the screen, which makes beating him with low power actually impossible unless you manage to mash all 1000+ hits in the same battle, which is also extremely unlikely if not impossible, especially for a little kid.
I know, I also had the same problem and never beat him until I was older lmao
This was a game played during a sleepover with friends. I remember trying to kill the shark with the boat and having issues with it.
I’ve always felt this game was actually pretty good and was surprisingly challenging. It truly is a representation of Jaws the Revenge. Much like most NES games, we used to think these were bad games but really they’re just tough! Nice vid-beat this game yesterday online
My cousins and I had hours of fun back in the day with this game . The soundtrack gets me right in the feels! What a simpler time , those were the days .
I had this game as a kid and although I never came close to beating it but this game gives me all the feels! I loved this game, right up there with Top Gun! Hard as nails games but man did I love sinking so many childhood hours into them!
This game is so underrated! I used to play this game in the summers of the late 80s! Good memories and Goodtimes!
Jaws for the NES gets a bad rap.
It was actually good for its time.
I enjoyed it a lot, I didn't know it was developed in less than a month... That makes it even better in my opinion. I still will load it up once in a while via emulation. (Too lazy to dig out systems and connect them all up as I have been collecting games and systems since like 1980 and I have a lot of crap.) To be honest I always considered Jaws on the NES pretty good, I think a lot of people hate on it just because it's LJN... In all fairness LJN is horrible but they did turn out a couple of decent games amidst the ocean of crap.
Amen! My grandmother bought it for me as a kid and I LOVED it. It was short and sweet. You could beat it in about 10-15 minutes. It definitely gets a bad rap.
I agreed i played it when i was young at a friends place and when out and got it asap
Lame Jerkoff Numbnuts might make shitty ass games but Jaws was a underrated classic even with the playtime being like 15 to 20 minutes
Malik you speak the absolute truth!
Every year I go on vacation by myself for a week. I bring my NES and I play this game every day all day. I never even leave the house I rent. It’s my favorite!
Really quite a fun little game.. Love that bonus stage tune. Great work again on the video, man!
Thanks my man. Bonus stage music is legit. That is why I included it at the end lol.
@@GenerationGapGaming You've chosen... wisely..
So many memories playing this with dad growing up! We used to do speed runs before speed runs were a thing. I remember my dad coming to the basement and telling me to let him get a quick 15 minute Jaws kill before bed. Ahhhh the memories...
I have a lot of nostalgia for this game. As a kid I'd always get to the end but didn't understand how to stab Jaws with the boat. Thanks for helping me beat the game all these years later! This channel is consistantly amazing
Another amazing video Tyler. Thanks for constantly putting out such quality content.
Thanks for your continued support Reagan. You're comments are always appreciated and help inspire me to make better vids.
I loved this game back in the day, nostalgic af! ❤️
Is that really how you speak into your society?
This was one of the few games I had when I was a kid. I had no earthly idea how to beat this game. I would pop it in, play until I had a couple game overs and moved onto something else. I would always come back to it. Great memories.
Anytime you hit something with your boat and Jaws' fin is showing anywhere in the ocean, he will show up in whenever you're in the water
My dad was a teacher when I was a kid, and one of his students left a copy of this game in his room one day which essentially made it mine. Without the manual, I couldn't make any sense of the game but played it for hours on end because of how smooth the submarine felt to control. My confusion by the game was very similar to the confusion I felt when my sister gave me ET for Atari several years earlier. I never made any progress other than, interestingly enough, understanding the rhythm of the synchronized swimming bonus so well that I regularly got 30. We are truly part of the luckiest generation in modern times, to have been able to experience the entire history of video gaming unfold and mature as its primary audience. Now some 30 years later, I'm typing a response on my phone to a video that I just watched on said phone. It's cool to think how much better the technology is now than I had imagined it would be back then, yet my expectations are infinitely higher now because of it. You sparked a lot of interesting thoughts in my mind tonight; thank you.
I used to make phone calls for these kind of pro tips....
Me too!! You could also call and have someone give you hints and tips or help walk you through specific puzzles or areas in games if you were stuck.
Jaws is upset you're giving away his secrets. You'll be the main character in Jaws: The Return, The Revenge. Seriously great video. Love your extensive knowledge into these classic titles! I'm glad we are no longer in the days of uncredited work!
I remember playing this and as a diver in the side view,if you swim all the way to the top and barely tap down on direction pad it puts you in a magic spot where Jaws can't hit you but you can hit him.
Thank you for doing this. That Arrow sound rings to the depths of my soul and holds rent in my brain.
Dude, listening to you talk about my old school games i realize i was to young trying too play some of these games. But watching you i understand that the games i played back then i would love too play now - thanks 👌👍.
You are welcome Parrish!
Played the hell out of this as a kid. Plus it was good seeing all of the movies so once I got to the final scene I knew exactly what to do.
yes!!!! thanks man just got home from work about to eat dinner and now i have something to watch you made my night!
Same here . Good times
thanks you two! Glad you enjoy the videos!
@@GenerationGapGaming Very much so. After working high rise construction all day it really is nice to unwind with some G3. Retro nestolgia is a great stress relief.
Man this takes me back I used to play this game over and over. Best part is I still have it along with the old Nintendo and 37 other games
Absolutely loved this game back in the day. This video brought back a lot of good memories.
I had this same experience of the game growing up, renting it, not having any earthly idea what to do, but enjoying it! Maybe the best game to bear the LJN logo. Excellent video, so glad I clicked on it! I dig your accent, it takes me right home to Tennessee where I grew up playing these games!
Great comment man. I am from southern WV so TN is definitely not too far away!
Had the hardest time when I was 9 taking Jaws down on the final stage. My older brother was watching and said he figured it out... he took him out with the first strobe.
This is why i LOVE your channel Tyler...u truly do your homework...your research is always on point. Keep em coming!
Thanks Stacy! How've you been? Having a good summer?
this is one of the first games i got with the NES on that Christmas morning back in '87. the others were Gotcha and the Super Mario/Duck Hunt pack-in cartridge. I didn't think this was bad at all. it was a perfectly adequate, functional game and younger me was thrilled as hell to have a game based on one of my favorite franchises.
I remember being a kid and going to Sears with my parents and picking this game out! I played it A LOT, maybe it's the nostalgia but I really like this game, it doesn't very deep gameplay and is a little repetitive but it controls really well. I could play this game anytime!
I couldn't have said it better myself!
I loved this game, back in the day, and I still love it today. Just a simple, fun game. 👍
One of my first NES games that I actually owned. I played this one a lot as a kid. Good game.
Man!!! I beat Jaws over and over as a kid and never knew about the mini sub until right now watching this. I used to borrow it from a buddy and I never got to look at the manual.
Damn. Why were those cheat codes so complicated for an NES game? But major appreciation for you taking the time to find them and present them to us!
one of my first NES games. For me personally it was a great game. I did get to beat it once, but after watching the vid I`m pretty sure I beat it out of luck for I had no idea I had to "level up" to beat Jaws. Nice vid, great game, awesome memories
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to beat this game for years and thought I knew all the tricks, but your tips on how to line up Jaws with the boat was crucial to me beating the game. I finally beat it after all these years and I made it a goal to beat it by the end of the month and I did it. Great content and production.
I acquired a copy of Jaws, now I'm going after him. Thanks for the tips man!
Another great video.
You are welcome Mark! Let me know if you beat him!
@@GenerationGapGaming will do. Maybe this Sunday
I feel proud to know all but values of enemies in this game prior to watching this video. I had this game when I was a kid and spent countless hours grinding and trying to figure out how to beat jaws .
I too only learned about the cheats watching this .
Good video. Be well.
Ill never forget the Saturday morning in 1990 when i beat this. It was the first nes game id beat. I woke my brother up n he was like NO WAY.
Ah, to be a kid again.
One of my favorites from my childhood! I still haven't beaten it though...
lol quitter :P
Now you can try to beat it??? i bet you can do it Mike.
It was fun as hell as a kid. Seeing that sub on screen and praying you get to it....a blast
I actually enjoyed this game as a kid! Getting the mini-sub is the most satisfying thing.
I had this game as a kid and I never had a clue on how to beat it. I kept hitting Jaws with harpoons in diving mode and I literally thought he was invincible! Lol I'm gonna get this game again and finally beat it knowing how to beat it now.
After you covered other LJN games I hoped you would give Jaws some coverage! I remember renting this one numerous times in order to finish it!
Thirty years later I showed it to my sister and helped her power up and hunt the murderous shark! We were both alarmed by the bloodshed since Nintendo was so squeamish about offensive material!
Another fantastic video, Tyler!
Yeah you get quite a splatter of blood when you stab him lol.
I initially hopped onto YT to look for the ending theme song for this game, since it suddenly popped into my head after 30+ years, but I remember playing this as a kid.
It was one of the first games I ever legitimately beat on my own without using the game genie and.. more importantly... not having access to the manual! I don't know how I managed to figure out what I needed to do since I wasn't allowed to watch the movies, but somehow that gamer instinct clicked even though I was a dumb 80's kid and I figured it out.
Blockbuster on central avenue and video wiz were the two premiere video rental stores in riverside California. Jaws and star wars were the games I rented the most. What a simple lovely time.
When I was a kid I got a core NES which came with no games. My parents got me Jaws with it. Tgis game still has a big place in my heart
Great video. And I really want to thank you for being one of the few on TH-cam I can actually watch with my five year old son.
this was one of my go-to games for a fun, quick gaming session for the NES. I'd typically warm up with one of these games before digging into a metroidvania style game (blaster master / xexyz) or an rpg.
Thanks for making all these videos. I just had to subscribe to the channel! Really brings back memories. Wish I still had all the games from back in the day but after moving out to college and my parents selling their house, never saw them again. They probably donated them to the Goodwill thinking I'm too old for games. AHHH!!!!
It's my pleasure Bob! Great to have you here. Welcome to G3!
Great video! I used to play this game all the time. I think because like you said, you can just pick it up and know what you’re doing and play for 20 minutes.
This is the Era where the big screen was not just at the movies but was starting to debut on NES video games!
My dad and stepmom used to play this a lot brings back a lot of nostalgic memories
This was the second game I got for my NES. I picked it out at Toys r Us. This was the only game my dad ever played, and he got crazy good at it. He would play it for hours (intentionally avoiding Jaws) just to see how many points he could amass.
Man. Your videos are so awesome! I love all of these little tricks. I had no idea that this game had secrets like that. Keep these coming! The Duck Tales Video before also blew my mind!
thanks my dude! The cheat codes with the second controller blew my mind.
My memories of Jaws were if frustration. But that was the rule of thumb for most NES rentals. The instruction books always got lost fast and we were left to puzzle it all out
There were around 10 game rental stores in my area in the late 1980s and I could only find Jaws at one. It was the smallest store in the area and it was a shack-looking store that was physically attached to the outside of my local grocery store. It's odd, but I do miss going to a rental store and renting video games for the weekend or a couple days.
I still have this game and still play it. But then I also am the one person in the world who really likes Jaws the Revenge because I first saw it as a kid and it stuck with me.
I have beat it several times. Loved it as a kid. It was a family game at my grandparents. It felt so good when I finally conquered it as a kid.
I wish my grandparents had an NES back then lol.
Jaws was my favorite movie when I was younger (and still in my top five), so I was HYPED when this game came out. Although it wasn't exactly all I had hoped for, I wouldn't call it a necessarily bad game. Sure, it didn't really follow any of the great/good installments of the film franchise, with recognizable moments only from the franchise-killing fourth film, but it had the 8-bit translation of the theme song, and some extremely stressful and challenging moments (mainly due to unpredictable jellyfish) that led to an enjoyable experience overall. Thanks largely to the "top of the water" trick used during your main game interactions with Jaws (discovered in my house by my dad, completely by accident), I can now beat this game quite easily in about 20 to 30 minutes.
Thank you for putting together this Jaws NES tribute video :). I also rented this game back in the day, but failed to finish it at that point in time. Poking Jaws in the gills ultimately proved too difficult. It was still fun to play either way hahaha!
That sound test is pretty cool! I wonder why some of the music was left out. Other games have done the same though for whatever reason.
Thanks for this video. I loved this game as a kid and still do. I got this on my new nes classic. And still love playing it. I loved the video
I played this game as a kid in the late 80's and loved it, wish I knew these tips and tricks back then
I just recorded a video with my wife watching me play jaws and I was able to defeat Jaws with my first attempt! This game is challenging but mainly the other sea creatures, jaws is easy to dodge. Thanks for the tips on the final part. I usually have trouble with it.
Didn't know about that second control stuff. I never had this as a kid. My friend across the street did. Have it now. Bring back good memories of us sitting in the basement of his house in like 1990 thru 1995 playing nes and drinking a butt load of soda. Good times. Thanks for the video
You are welcome man! Sounds like some great memories.
I learned a lot I didn’t know in this one! I recall playing Jaws somewhere around the late 80’s early 90’s at a friend’s house and being really scared any time Jaws would show up lol.
Jaws was scary. Mainly cause it looks like he is smiling lol
I also remember in one of the Adventure Island games having to leave the room whenever this whale would jump up out of the water. What is it with scary sea creatures on the NES? 🐳 😱
The last scene has a day to night cycle that I've never heard anyone else mention. I discovered it once as a child by leaving the game on and getting distracted with other things before coming back to it.
Totally agree about playability Jaws is one of favorites I remember playing for hours fully powering up but I never could stab him gonna have to go back and give it a try thanks!
I can't believe I never knew about those codes. I've beaten this game through and through. There was a time I could get all jellyfish on the bonus mission, but I've only done it a handful of times. I actually liked hanging out at the bottom of the screen because it was more dangerous and made the game more fun having to quickly dodge everything, but while also being able to collect those sweet, sweet conch shells!
Me either dude! Totally blew my mind.
Found a new love for this game after seeing your video. Thanks for that!
The A button did affect your movement if you used the turbo feature on the NES Advantage. You had to keep the button pressed the entire time. It basically took away the ‘lag’ when changing directions.
When I was a kid playing this game, I always thought the game over music was pretty catchy. Never beat it but always love to hear that game over music. 😂
I only just found you through Retro Force Thursday! Glad I did!! Fantastic break down of the game mate! Really enjoyed this!
From a game design person Jaws actually looks like it had some great ideas! I fancy playing it!
Thanks man! Gotta love that RetroForce!!!!
I just recently subscribed to your channel after remember seeing some of these "Secrets and History" videos in the past. Amazing (and) nostalgic content, keep it up!
thanks so much man. Glad you are enjoying it and thanks so much for subscribing.
Jaws one of my favorite games of all time. I still have my copy. Also Jaws the Revenge isnt that bad of a movie. Great video.
I actually loved this game... I can still hear the theme and sound effects when I think of the game
I have these video games as a child. I'm 40 years old and grew up with the NES. My wife is 15 years younger than me and she has no idea what a NES is.
Just think, when you graduated high school, she was 3 years old 😒👎
Loved this game, but I was 8 years old when it came out. I remember packing my nes every time we went to grandma's or out of town, I even took this game with us on vacation. Never really beat it though, it was kind of weird for a kid's brain I guess...
Working at Blockbuster Video, the reason why video game manuals were not included was for they were kept in a box in the backroom until they could be sold off as Previously Used. Ever try selling a video game without a instruction manual? That would had gotten you weird looks back in the day.
This was the first NES game I beat. It was one of my favorite games.
ooooh nice, looking forward to watching this one :) this is one game i have prob re-played the most and can continually sit down and beat within 15-20mins and always feels good each time :)
hahaha 11:54, had me laughing, yup..sounds about right :)
It is a great, quick pick up and play passtime for sure.
Borrowed it from a friend during a snowstorm some 30 years ago, and played it all day.. gave me something to do while I stayed home from school.
Sounds like my kind of snow day!!!!
I always loved this game, but I’ve never beat it. But I am determined, after watching this I will again try. Love this game.
It gets a bad rap for sure. I love it too.
The fun part of this game is playing in the corners of the map, lots of sharks there, means lots of conchs and challenging gameplay, rather than playing in the noob area. The higher your power up, the stronger your harpoons against sharks, and at high levels you get 2 little sharks rather than a manta ray, I love it, is like playing a shooter zombies game.
An interesting thing I found out back when this came out was that if you go to the top where Jaws can't get you, but tap down to move like a pixel lower than the top, Jaws cant touch you but you can just fire the harpoon at him all day and follow him back and forth witbout getting killed. 20 years later I finally beat the game because I didnt know you had to go back and forth to the 2 docks to power up. Lol. Also, whats an "Enteractive" game? It's on the box and the manual. Oh and the NES Max helps out because of the turbo buttons.
Great Work!!! Love how you explained the history on developers & subcontractors. LJN does have it's share of skid marks, but like the old WWF rubbery action figures they made, I'll give this game a chance after seeing the video... surprisingly the action figures are worth something these days!
The first Christmas I had my Nes. I got this, Top gun, and Commando (the only one I asked for). That success rate is why I think the rental business. Stopped another crash from happening.
I really liked this game as a kid. I actually completed it by some miracle.
Maaaaaan I loved that game as a kid. I used to do these swooping kamakazee runs on the sting rays.
Great video. I owned this game as a kid and I never beat it. I could never finish the final stage. always missed. Always fun to see some tips that I could've used to make life easier.
The Jellyfish bonus game isn't "randomly throughout the game", it occurs after you kill every other small shark. It alternates, first shark ends the screen, the second goes to the bonus, and repeat.
Great video. As a kid I never understood what to do at the ending scene. So literally the game never ended for me 😂. Thought I was playing Spy Hunter or something, and that was just the plan all along haha
Love your work and vids, please keep them coming!
Thank you Gino🙏. Very kind of you to say
I love my J🦈WS game. One of the originals in my first Nintendo collection. I got my Nintendo for my 5th birthday in 1987. The sounds and music and difficulty of this game for me hold a special place in my heart plus the nostalgia factor is way high. A game I was never able to beat as a child and to this day have yet to make a go at it. I just got back Into playing and collecting for my SNES and just beat Virtual Bart which was very satisfying! I have to say this about the Golden Era and all of us who made video games what they are today. No generation of people and games are touching us kids from the 80's and 90's. Just like the games themselves we are unbeatable. We will rule the world now and forever. The Kings of the Jungle are here and are us. There are games I still haven't been able to beat from back then. I don't use strategy guides and cheat codes. To truly beat a game that's what it takes. Can you imagine a game from the last 20 years being unbeatable??? Imagine a video game coming out tomorrow that only the smallest percentage of gamers are able to beat after a lot of hard work and 15 years from now you have a lot of people still trying to beat it. I think because of the difficulty and true challenge of video games from the 80's and 90's are why ever since...every video game I have had and played...I set to the hardest settings. God Bless Us!
