    Some how this video showed up glad it did. I love Oakland. Here as a travel healthcare worker, but have been able to stay since 2022 in a rent controlled apartment by the lake.
    I have lived in several places around the US, and Oakland is my top 3. I hate the reputation this city has, because it really has so much going for it. It’s just like any other city.
    Lived in DC for 1.5 yrs. Heard the same but loved my experience.
    If you’re still here, welcome.
    And I was looking at that building when I thought about moving, but can’t beat the space & rent I have. But love that studio space. ❤

    Born and raised in the Bay Area, and all I can say is 1) Too expensive 2) Crime is outta control 3) There’s homeless encampments everywhere. This is why Keith Lee (the food critic) left so fast, he didn’t finish his visit 😂 people are trying to survive. I wish you all the best and pray that you have a great experience. If you find that it gets too crazy , there’s surrounding cities that aren’t so bad.

    • @iamjosimarie
      @iamjosimarie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I totally hear you. The homelessness broke my heart while I was there. I didn’t experience crime (thank God) while I was there but i definitely heard about it a ton. Expensive, definitely!

    • @EnduranceTrainer
      @EnduranceTrainer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Like any city, there are issues. The Bay has done better with getting the homeless population under control. I got assigned here the end of 2019 (SF). It was way worse during COVID. I moved to Oakland in 2022 while working in Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill, Antioch, Hayward, and Marin. Nonviolent crime has gone up and down here in Oakland. Yet the same crime that happens in SF & Oakland is also happening in Walnut Creek, Concord area and beyond, it just doesn’t hit the news as much.
      I’ve lived in large and small towns/cities in TX, AL, FL, MD, & DC and all of them had higher violent crime rates, and still do, over Oakland.
      I use to be a cop, so I’m not just trying to defend a city I have come to love, but I do pay attention to crime and the actual stats, over the perceived fear.
      Yes, it is expensive, but looking around helps to find less expensive. I pay 1670 for a 700sqft studio that includes parking, is rent controlled, by the lake and in walking distance to just about everything. That is expensive, when I think about my 1500sqft house mortgage is 1100. However, my quality of life in Oakland is better than living in my house in AL.
      It’s all perspective.

    • @Moli37
      @Moli37 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Not to mention Oakland has become extremely dangerous with shootings and break-ins.

    • @EnduranceTrainer
      @EnduranceTrainer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Moli37 For people that have lived in Oakland for years, grew up here, compared to what it was, yes the crime rate has risen. But so did the crime rate everywhere during and after COVID. Oakland also had a change with people moving from SF into Oakland and prices rising, plus there weren’t enough police. I moved here in 2022 and didn’t see any cops till this year, pretty much anywhere in the Bay Area. The break-ins, shootings, stabbings increased even in Concord/Pleasant Hill/ Walnut Creek and even reaching into Antioch. I know because I worked in those areas while living in Oakland.
      Oakland mayor also fired the police chief and left the city without leadership and difficulty hiring police for over a year, allowing crime to increase, while focusing on moving homeless and the camps. Once people started calling for the mayor to be recalled, she finally hired a police chief, but not the one the police and people wanted.
      Crime is now going down due to getting help from CHP and finally getting leadership.
      Granted, I am not from here, I’m just a healthcare traveler who has stated here because I actually like it.
      I have also lived & worked all over TX, AL, MD, DC, & a few other places whose crime rates aren’t talked about and worse than Oakland.
      Crime is everywhere. Yes, they need to do something about it, but understanding how it got like this and fixing the cause of it is the answer.

    I’m from the city and have been in the town for over 10 years. No matter where you go you’ll get from it what you want. I love it here. This has always been the spot. No matter where you go you should always keep your head on a swivel, that’s just life. I never leave valuables in my car, but i grew up here so that’s just how we’re raised. There’s some dope spots to go to and dope things to get into. If you’re looking for trouble you will find it, but if you’re looking for a good time, you will definitely find that too. It’s up to you the experience you have

    Yeah I’m trying to leave Oakland. The cost of living with the rise in crime is just out of control. 15 years ago you could rent a 2 bedroom unit for 850-900/month now you’re paying double for the same outdated apartments. I see in the other comments that you moved, I’m glad you didn’t stay long but happy you met really cool people.

    As a Oakland native, I can't recommend moving to Oakland, but there are PLENTY of GREAT places to live within 5-10 miles. The messed up thing about it, I think people outside of Oakland in nearby cities, come to the town to do crime like bippin, abandon cars, human traffick etc, the mayor panders, they have city debt, the police hadn't had leadership until recently and they wasn't "defunded" either Republicans also the city council is a mess besides a few really good people but the weather and culture are BEAUTIFUL and the richness of diversity makes Oakland culturally better than SF. Oakland is a beautiful melting pot of cultures, music, and identities but the crime has gotten worse since the pandemic even the strongest Oaklanders are ready to go. They have a new police chief but can't recommend....but visiting for a event is totally fine just be smart. Even Oakland wants to be called "San Francisco Bay" so it's not just me. 💯

      Having lived in Brooklyn for most of my adult life, I thought I would get a more BK vibe in Oakland when it came to culture and diversity. While it wasn’t the same, I did enjoy the diversity, food, culture in Oakland! But i definitely didn’t feel as safe as I did in BK in the last (and I did live in some ROUGH parts of BK as I was getting established). I didn’t feel safe 100% in Oakland but I am glad I made a stop there (I have since moved)! Thanks for the input Amir!!

I'm also thinking of downsizing from 1bdrm to studio, but I literally have no idea of where to look. Are you allowed to give the name of the apartments or at least the area of Oakland you ended up in? The view is pretty nice! Thx. Hey!! This one is Lantana Uptown. I am happy to share since I don’t live here anymore - got engaged and left California. I had a one large one bedroom before this, and after nomading a bit, I decided to downsize to this studio and I absolutely loved it! The only downside was not having enough space for when I wanted to host the many friends I made there (even in the building).
      As for the beige/cream color, yeah I love it. And I just got the same exact couch for me and my fiancé’s new place. He has a dog. So, I’m staying to regret the choice haha but we’ll see how it goes! Pray for me!

      If you're looking to live in Oakland, I loved renting through a company called Lapham. I always lived around Lake Merrit in an older (but actually affordable) building. Most of their buildings are rent controlled-which is ideal. Renting an apartment in Uptown is going to be $$$. If you rent on "Pill Hill", you'll be about 10 minutes away and pay much less in rent.

    Dig it. I am a Manhattan transplant to and living in San Francisco, but I work in Oakland. Oakland has replaced San Francisco as THE wildly boho, artistic, activist city in this century that San Francisco was in the last century. San Francisco is merely wealthy. But Oakland is diverse, creative, ambitious, and engaged.
    It is also a GREAT restaurant town, with highly accomplished, star-level chefs working in a range of culinary styles as diverse as the city's citizens. You'll find everything from stylish Latin European (French, Spanish, Italian) to upscale, modern soul, Asian to Caribbean, Central and South American to East African, (Oakland's Ethiopian restaurants are the best in the Bay Area), and everything from creative food truck cuisine to Michelin-starred food meccas. The star chefs here include double Michelin-starred James Syhabout, James Beard-honoured, modernist BBQ pit-master Matt Horn; high-concept soul food chef Geoff Davis, James Beard-honoured Nite Yun, famed for her néo-modernist take on mid-twentieth century Cambodian cuisine; Southern French and Northern Spanish restauranteur Paul Canales, who originally came to national prominence as the chef at Oakland's long-running legendary Italian/French/Northern Spanish restaurant, Oliveto, which finally closed before the pandemic, after a nearly forty-year run and having earned countless accolades.
    You'll find museums, quirky hipster nabes, Bougie, casual chic nabes straight out of "Portlandia," and the lush, forested hillside neighborhoods are filled with stylish woodsy retreats and classic sprawling estates of old Oakland dynasty wealth (Kaisers, Bechtels, etc.) and new high-tech behemoth homes reflecting the high-tech, new wealth flooding into "The Town"; but you'll also find public parks of expansive Redwood forests, belying the ancient, highly bogus stereotype of Oakland as a "gritty, urban" of centre of concrete and asphalt.
    Good luck in your new digs, welcome to the Bay Area, and who knows? We might see you jogging around Lake Merritt or hanging about with the cool kids at First Friday or some other such arts event in Oakland.

    Girl, I live in northern California! Born and raised there. Why in the HELL would you want to move to Oakland!!! You going to learn and see real quick, Oakland ain't it! But good luck with that!

      lol my reasons are in the vlog 💕 I had a mostly great experience in the year I was there! I’m so glad I made the move, though it turned out to be temporary. I fell in love, got engaged, and moved out of state as we are planning our summer wedding! Life takes you where you need to go, and I’m so grateful I had the time that I had in Oakland. 💖

    Wow, I am a Californian and a lot of us are escaping this place. We love our state but Cali has gotten soooo bad, we hate the state that its in and those running it. Its crazy that folks are up and moving here and not for work, but just because they think its cool. We use to tell people we full and to go home. Now we like, good luck with that. Dont get it twisted, Westcoast all day, Cali is still that state when its NOT deep deep blue and woke and progressive. Anyhow good luck! Hopefully it gets better sooner than later.

      Hey!! A lot of people ask that - why would I choose to move to Oakland 😅😅. I wanted to be around a Rwandese community of people my age, and in warmer weather than the Midwest or east coast. I also wanted a new experience on a diverse area (the bay) that had smart, young professionals to network with!

    Crazy how u would move to an unsafe neighborhood without doing a good research. Being African, i would NEVER move to a place just cz a certain grp of pple i can relate to live there. Most of the pple u are referring to as "your pple" are probably new to the country and working on making it big so they could move out of that area, yet u are a veteran in the country who decides to follow others blindly. Not a wise idea

    • @iamjosimarie

      Sweetheart, all of your assumptions about ‘my people’ are wrong. It was one of the best decisions that I’ve made, and I’m so glad I followed my heart. I have since fallen in love and moved away, but it was a spectacular thing that I followed my inner voice and went and did my thing. Imagine if you knew that I also moved to New York City at 18 years old with $28! I wonder what you’d call me then! Lol I hustled my butt off and was able to get myself through college and build a wonderful life. It is OK to have opinions how YOU would live your life. But others are free to, do what they have to do as well. Definitely not a blind follower, but I do definitely follow my heartmy inner voice. Peace.

      People have different motivations when it comes to making a move. I am SO glad I made the move - I got what I needed from it, and moved on with my life. It was perfect. Not an idiotic move on my part. But I do agree with the previous comment about the crime. It’s wild. I can’t say i felt 100% safe all the time in Oakland.
