Or that recently many Oakland businesses such as In n Out, Dennys, Subway, Raising Canes and more have all closed or partially closed recently due to high crime and other businesses such as Clorox have had to hire extra security to protect their employees? If you’ve been following the news lately about the progress of different cities in America, one city may have stood out: Oakland, California. And unfortunately, it probably didn’t stand out for a good reason. And although not everything in Oakland is bad, 63% of Oakland residents said that they were unhappy with what elected officials have been achieving. Because there are a lot of tourist and people just waiting to give handouts to homeless. If people stop giving money and food to the homeless I'm sure there will be less.
That's the thing no one who's trashing these places never really gets into. The reason these places have so much homelessness is because the rent is so extremely high. And the reason it's so high is because so many people want to live there. If they were such hellholes why do so many people with pretty high incomes stick around?

Think about it...the bay area is a gold mine. It's geographical location is amazing. We have the beach, the red wood forrest, lakes and rivers. Beautiful mountains. We are close to Napa county and the Sierra Nevadas. GENTRIFIERS, UPPER CLASS FOLKS WANT TO PUSH BLACK AND ASAIN LOWER MIDDLE CLASS FOLKS OUT SO IT CAN BE A WHITE TECH CITY. So they can have this land to theirselves. honestly in the late 80's early 90's there were blocks and blocks of streets you couldnt drive down without an armored car and assault weapons....it got cleaned up for a while but now it's back but still nothing like it was back then. recently i accidentally took the wrong exit and found intersections destroyed by "sideshows" (done with cars) rubble and detritus everywhere, entire buildings covered up to the 3rd floor with graffitti, and entire areas filled with homeless campers all just ONE block from upscale condos and highspeed freeways...i cant imagine living in that hell zone. i was literally terrified.

I was born and raised in Oakland in the 50s and 60s. The city was so unsafe that my parents had to keep moving us further and further away. By 1990, it got so bad, my parents, my wife's parents and my wife and I, had to pack up and move 150 miles north.🥴

I lived in Oakland for several years, but in 2018 I couldn't take living there anymore! I'm a retired police officer from LAPD Los Angeles Police Department, and crime had rapidly increased dramatically in Oakland to the point I stopped going anywhere at night, I tried my best to have someone with me when I went places there even in daylight hours for extra safety. I was pretty much a prisoner in my own house not to mention I had also been a victim of a couple of property crimes in the last two years I lived there! I had my car broken into twice, someone broke into my garage and I had several pieces of mail stolen right from my mailbox which included a couple of retirement checks from the State of California! FINALLY I HAD ENOUGH! Within a 60 day period, I sold my house and moved to the Philippines where I've lived full time since I arrived in July 2018 and I've never been back to the US let alone to Oakland! In the nearly 6 years since moving to the Philippines, I've never ever felt uncomfortable or frightened, and I've not experienced any crime to myself or to my property! Best decision I've ever made in my life moving from Oakland to the Philippines 🇵🇭 ❤
Oakland used to be a nice place to live and for many years I never had any problems until 2014 came along and it just kept getting worse and worse! I was lucky and blessed that I was able to move from there, but unfortunately I know there are many people living there that don't necessarily have the option or ability to leave! 😢😢

I only retired to the Philippines bcos my wife and her family are from the Philippines, so we decided to stay in the Philippines where life is much easier and much more affordable. Many of my fellow partners with LAPD did live in Simi Valley during that time but it's been many years since retirement

I lived in the Philippines for five years and would NEVER EVER GO BACK. It is utterly corrupt. It is also hot but that would not be the reason for leaving. It is cheap, but that is NOT a reason to stay there. I do not know where you live but it is a miracle you do not need body guards. Glad your life is swell, you are the first American I know of who thinks it is better than the United States of America.

However, no country is perfect and currently there's nothing I need or want that I can't get or have here in the Philippines. I've never ever had a problem with anyone here and certainly I've never thought of needing a bodyguard? At least there's no mass shootings here compared to the US? Maybe bcos I was a police officer that I'm flexible and adaptable bcos it takes a lot of adjustment to live here but at least for me, I've never been happier! I bought a new house, a new car and a new Suzuki GSX-S1000 since I've lived here, compared to the US I would never been able to buy a new house, especially in California where I was born and raised. How’s is it that the city is 54 million in debt but pay one basketball player that amount a year?
On a trip to the USA, we took BART from SF to Oakland to collect or camper van to travel USA by road. Oakland was total dump if i've ever seen one. Not as bad as say Kensington but up there. The station we left BART on had gunshots trough the info screens. While riding on BART you could see the trash, burned out vehicules, burnt out homes and entire neighborhoods where people seem to collect trash both in their backyards and on their front door. There was entire streets with tent camps and people living out of their cars. Something you'll never see here.
Who would have thought endlessly giving to the homeless and refusing to charge criminals would promote more crime and homelessness? Oakland's only solution is to continually increase tax and throw more money at the problem. No one to blame but the voters themselves.
Eventually the politicians will run out of other people's money.

I work in Downton Oakland, near the Clorox building. You can definitely see the impact of the pandemic in the nearby Civic Center area where all the office workers eat lunch, but it's not a ghost town. There's always plenty of white collar types hanging around, especially at lunch time. I walk around the area all the time and have never been accosted.
Dont forget, you are paying extremely high home prices with no right to the property. You can’t legally defend it in any capacity and police will ignore complaints of squatters and homeless are free to set up camp on your lawn.

I lived in Oakland for 15yrs, I sold my house in 07 after the riot that took place when the Raiders lost the super bowl. It was a powder keg then and is even worse today. I had a service route for the largest security company, I saw violence on daily basis. It was a lawless environment, and law enforcement were helpless to do anything about it. That was 17yrs ago, its only gotten worse if you can imagine that. Socialist democratic rule always destroys towns when its voted in, Oakland is just one example of destroyed cities across the nation.

Blaming Oakland's homelessness issue solely on the lack of affordable housing is wild. I'm in California and can tell you exactly what happened.
The sharp increase in homelessness directly coincided with the implementation of prop 47 in 2014, which decriminalized drug use and theft in the state. It made a bad problem even worse in Oakland, in particular. Add to that the 9th circuit court preventing cities and governments from removing homeless camps from public spaces like sidewalks, parks, and other undesignated camping areas. With drug abuse and vagrancy essentially decriminalized, users had no incentive to get on rehab programs or seek out other housing solutions. Instead of getting treatment, people can now spiral out of control with no intervention.
This policy and attitude of enablement is chronic in the Bay area, especially, and is pervasive across most of California now. However, you see the worst of it concentrated in cities where these insane ideas originated, like SF, Oakland, Sacramento, and LA.
You can force cities and counties to zone all of the "affordable housing" you can squeeze in and it still won't solve the homeless issue. It will however spread urban blight to the suburbs and the rural counties and decrease quality of life across the board. If they truly cared about fixing homelessness, they'd tackle the problem at it's root. They won't.
Went to Oakland for the first time a lil over a year now I e never seen so many broken into and abandoned cars littered everywhere run down mobile homes falling apart everywhere piles of garbage on like every corner so many vacant buildings and businesses tagged up and abandoned shit is like a dystopian movie

Whoah 😮I lived in Berkeley and Oakland in the mid to late 90s….There were definitely sketchy areas but also areas that were pretty enjoyable. I guess I was lucky that my girlfriend and I were able to avoid problems with crime. Downtown back then at city center was still trying to rebound from the Loma Prieta quake. But there were descent restaurants and jazz clubs at Jack London Square. And the neighborhoods in the hills that burned in 91 were just starting to get rebuilt. I had mostly good times then. Lived near Lake Merritt and walked to work. Sad to hear my former home is not doing well.

I'm Australian and flew out of Oakland international over Christmas and I've never seen anything like Oakland. I worked for a San Francisco based company and would visit the corporate offices (I was east coast based) in the late '90s. Oakland was a place that you didn't visit even then. Transiting it on the freeway was ok, but don't exit.
This is exactly what I experienced. I worked for a SF company, but I reside on the east coast, I accenditally got off on the wrong BART stop and I never felt so unsafe. I am a pretty large white guy, but I was cat-called and threatened for simply walking down the street, back to the BART terminal.

My friends and I accidentally got off on the Oakland exit on the way to Candlestick Park for a Grateful Dead concert, years ago. As we cruised through the Ghetto, black guys were standing in a big rowdy group on a street corner around two black guys beating the crap out of each other. Blood was flying out of their faces. That was also considered a Good Time in 💩Hole Commiefornia, which I grew up in! I no longer live in that Hellscape. Good Video - I live in Toronto Canada and many of Oakland's stats are starting to show up here. It is sad very sad. Unfortuantly our politicians don't have the guts to make difficult and unpleasant decisions.
Walmart closed nearly a decade ago. I wouldn't call that recently.
Homeless has increased as gentrification has creeped into from San Francisco as tech transplants sought "more affordable" housing alternatives versus living in downtown SF. This raised housing rates & pushed locals farther away when they could no longer afford the increases. Once lock down happened, many transplants went back to where they came from having no real roots here anyway & having the ability to work from home anywhere but housing prices remain elevated and unaffordable.
Additionally much of the petty crimes committed, are from outsiders who live in the suburbs but come to downtown Oakland to bip cars and vandalize businesses, then they return to their peaceful neighborhoods leaving destruction and a bad reputation for Oakland in their wake. Oakland has always had some crime but what's going on now is not the norm. The police decidedin the wake of the defendthepolice movement that instead of addressing the issues that lead to crime, they'dbe spiteful and stopping police minor crime altogether. This effectively makes Oaklanda sanctuary for petty criminals to commit crimes. However, new police chief was just named, so that's something.
And just a sidenote but a bit of the footage shown was of Frisco while discussing Oakland.
Oakland has definitely changed & not all for the better but it's not necessarily as bad as the media make it out to be. I feel completely safe other than worrying about parking my car downtown.
63% of its residents say they are unhappy with how things are run in Oakland. That's still pretty low. 37% of the people are still ok with it.

There’s a saying “you can’t have anything nice” but in Oakland you literally can’t have shit. They’re breaking into empty cars with no tints. They’re breaking into cars that are internationally left unlocked. It’s so bad. You can’t even walk around here without having to look over your shoulder. Traffic signs and lights don’t mean shit in Oakland either. Bay Area invented sideshows and doing illegal shit in cars like sideshows and races was super popular, but ever since the rest of the country been copying and doing “takeovers” it seems like Oakland gotta 1-up and go above and beyond with vehicle crimes. It’s damn near a death wish to own a car in Oakland
Lived in Michigan near Detroit and in California (Alameda) across from Oakland and they both have the same issue corruption and bad urban planning. The corruption is obvious and it transcends political party; Rick Snyder/Kwame Kilpatrick and Gavin Newsom/Sheng Thao are good examples. But the urban planning is the real issue, both cities are examples of mass suburbanization instead of a high density urban city.
Hundreds of miles of suburbs, are hard to police and lead to dead zones. Meaning there's no one in the city at night, and there's no one in the suburbs during the day. Versus a urban dense city, that has a mixture of residences and businesses, there's always someone there who can call the cops. Both issues combined create the perfect storm.

I have not even followed the details on Oakland..... but the fact that they basically lost ALL of their professional sports teams in a span of 5 years was a major sign that the city is not doing well. It is almost like Detroit or Cleveland in the 1980s......
One of the reasons why the teams left, who would pay for new areans and stadiums! The teams wanted the county and city (tax payers) to pay for it. Alameda county doesn't have that much money!

I always see the abandoned buldings driving North from Union City/ Fremont on the side of the freeway. Pretty depressing. I always hear stories of people being jacked. My family, my teachers, and myself... with some pretty good camping gear inside the backpack. I guess the blandness and industrial districts of Union City is where I'll stay.

I spent a year there in 2022 as my wife was a travel nurse. We looked around the Bay Area for housing & ended up on Alameda Island. It’s connected to Oakland by bridges & a tunnel. It is like night & day . Like crossing the border in Tijuana. When we were there it was virtually homeless & graffiti free. We saw a homeless set up near a post office & they were gone the next day. It was safe we didn’t worry about crime .
My sister lives on Alameda Island, and it's starting to get worse. Cancer spreads.

The city is building 3 stories of low income housing right next to bancroft middle school.

Oakland from what I am seeing here is becoming the West Coast's Detroit.
The law is way too lax. It’s not a deterrent. There are penalties for breaking the law to discourage people from doing it. If the penalties don’t do that, then they need to be increased until they do. It’s not cruel or unusual, it’s necessary. That might mean sending people to jail for years for “minor” crimes, but if that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes. You don’t see robberies in countries with extreme penalties like losing a hand for theft.
Extremely high crime rate, 30% office vacancy rate, budget deficit increasing, failing infrastructure, and more businesses closing everyday, a public school system that is akin to daycare for criminals and YET median home sale price of $750K. Toto I don't think were in Kansas anymore.

I live in Oakland and Lake Merritt has improved a lot over the past 20 years. Being located in the Bay Area you see how cities that have historically struggled financially and politically wind up being the dump of problems from other parts of the Bay Area. The proximity to SF is a detriment for cost of living and the NIMBY pushes homelessness and crime to areas with more racial and economic diversity, like Oakland and other parts of the East Bay. Despite the data shown in the video, people are still living here and thriving. There are problems no doubt, and generational trauma in these communities that will likely take many more years overcome.

I grew up in the 60’s. I Loved California until I did not. Most of California has turned into mostly ghetto areas with small nice areas.
I grew up in Oakland in the 60s as well, Hawthorn Elementary, Hamilton Jr. High, Fremont High, and Merritt Jr. College, the destruction began in the early 70s.
Oakland should seize all property unused for five years and start a UBI to housing project. Oakland should have more manufacturing. Oakland should have more first opportunity programs in education and employment. Oakland post offices should begin postal credit union trials. Oakland needs to get back to work!

To someone who has visited the US over 20 times (I live in Scotland) what no one here can understand is why are the US citizens voting for these officials. It seems to be people in NYC, Chicago, San F etc have done likewise. What is it they are voting for? Everyone of these cities is in economic despair due to the officials' mandates so I'd like to know why people would vote for this. What is beyond complete understanding is that crime and looting and everything else seemingly is going unpunished? I mean those illegals that beat up the two cops in NYC got let off and let go and have subsequently committed further crimes in the city. It beggars belief what is going on in the US. Everyone around the world is seeing this and this is going to majorly affect tourism that puts billions of dollars into the US economy. Also, what on earth is going on with ludicrous tipping expectations, 20% min, no F*****G chance! Just do your job that you're paid to do, albeit poorly, so the businesses need to pay the staff more, not everybody else having to sub their wages, it's a complete mess in the US just now and I can choose to visit or not visit, I'm choosing not to.
