The "releasing a remaster/port/remake for the switch in order to get people hyped for the next anouncement of the franchise" is not weird, given that nintendo has been doing this for a while: Metroid Prime Remaster (2023) - Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (2025) The Leyend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake (2019) - Echoes of Wisdom (2024) Bayonetta 1+2 in Switch (2018) - Bayonetta 3 Pikmin 3 Deluxe 2020 - Pikmin 4 Famicom Detective Club: Two Case Collection (2021) - Emio The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (2024) Xenoblade Chronicles Remake (2020) - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022) Or maybe this is Nintendo's way of saying "hey, don't worry, we still remember this franchise, anyways, pay us $60 for this lazy port".
it’s one of gaming’s biggest tragedies that we never got the third game in the _Donkey Kong Country Returns_ trilogy from Retro… it would’ve been nice to get it early on in the Switches life, with an HD trilogy collection late in it’s life. …and they could’ve had K. Rool and the Kremlings come back as the villains 👍
so painful to be a dk fan, meanwhile zelda fans are rushing through eow so they can get back to complaining about how long it takes for new games to come out.
@@blayedd_ ya I've been seeing a lot of that lately, idk why everyone thinks it's terrible now when everyone and their mother was praising it right after it came out. It's a really good game so idk where that was coming from
My guess is that as of recent country returns is far more recent and recognizable. But also , and probably more importantly, the easiest to port onto the switch
I think it's just to coincide with the expansion and the Mario movie. Notice how the expansion is based solely on Returns with the final boss even being on the ride. The Golden temple was also a set piece in the Mario movie which the park is pretty much trying to parallel.
That is a fair argument, but the main reason I mentioned the Donkey Kong expansion is to show that despite a lack of new games from the series, Nintendo still sees Donkey Kong as a very viable and successful enough brand. I mean if Nintendo saw Donkey Kong and it's current state as something like Star Fox or F zero then I think it would've been unlikely that it was chosen as the first expansion. I mean tears of the kingdom sold 10 million copies in 3 days last year and Pokemon is well pokemon. I don't necessarily think a new game and hints towards it are hidden at the park, more or less just an observation of how Nintendo currently sees and treats the Donkey Kong franchise overall
But also why would they base the ride on new stuff not yet seen. There would be no sense of familiarity and nostalgia when fan are on the ride. There very possibly could be a new game.
The feel of the modern DK games does feel off. Returns and Tropical Freeze feel more like the modern 2D Mario engine with DK characters slapped on top, whereas DKC had very distinct fluidity and physics that were distinct from Mario platformers. Also, I initially didn't realize it, but the lack of the Kremlings as the primary antagonists really made it feel... off.
They do feel different don't get me wrong, but I would hardly call it a Mario game with DK characters. The SNES trilogy had a certain feeling that was present through every aspect of those games, it's actually why I think it would be kind of weird to have these games looking any different from what they were on the SNES. And the kremlings being absent is something that does also makes these ones feel a bit different. I personally didn't mind tikis and snowmads as villains but would love to see the kremlings back!
We need a new DK game that plays like the classic snes games. I don't care if the visuals are redone. I need a DK game that feels like the original classic games unlike Returns and Tropical freeze as good as they are. They feel chunkier and mechanical where the originals are so smooth and replayable. The originals were also made to be speedrun (quite literally) and be easily repayable.
I actually think the controls are equally as smooth across the board. Im currently doing the hard mode on tropical freeze and it's really making me appreciate how smooth the controls in that game are
@aidan_548 I disagree. The momentum gained from rolling through enemies makes a large difference in time, pace, and fluidity which is a very different feel from the originals and the newer DK games. That increased push is not present in the new DK games. I also have to say the newer games feel more mechanical and defined where there is much more control in mobility in the original.
I honestly believe its either because Nintendo are now working on games for the Switch's successor, so need filler for Switch in the mean time. OR Donkey Kong is going to have a much bigger role in the Super Mario 2 movie and they need the public to know they're still making Donkey Kong games.
Great video! DK's my favorite franchise and I'm hoping for a new game since finishing DKCTF long years ago. I think we'll be getting the next game on the Switch's sucessor in it's first year of release.
I'm kinda worried about this remaster, but what sells that to me, is that there's no a definitive way to play this game even with emulators. Wii: +better graphics, 60 fps and minimal input delay compared to emulators -Forced motion controls, less levels than 3DS port. 3DS: +Button controls, more levels -Worse graphics, non unlockable 30 fps
Dude I just found your account and assumed you had thousands of subs, this was a great video and yes, as a lifelong, diehard Donkey Kong fan I want a new game so, so bad. You earned a sub!
I definitely agree with you and I think the main reason they are releasing this game is because of things like the Mario movie and Super Nintendo World that have a DK appearance, and then those people who see that, some of whom are casual gamers, would then want to invest in the DK franchise video games on switch. I'm also thinking Nintendo might be cooking up something big for DK on the Switch 2, so only time will tell.
In the meantime i wait for a new F - Zero game. There wasn't a new F - Zero game in over 20 years. F - Zero 99 doesn't count, because it's a F - Zero Battle Royal. Just to make it clear, my favorite Nintendo franchise is The Legend of Zelda, but this doesn't mean, that i don't want other franchises to come back.
As an F-Zero fan who likes Pokémon I totally agree with you. :3 The F-Zero community seems so small. Nintendo can just leave em in the dust and that’s sad.
@@StatickyCat I guess Nintendo understood that internal competition between its own products is not good. Melting the handheld and the home console was a successfull move. Also, abolishing F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing allowed Mario Kart to shine as a primary product, rather than a Mario Golf-like spin-off. They probably care about F-Zero because it is present in Smash Bros and MK8 and they realeased F-Zero 99. They are probably trying to figure out a way to make F-Zero and Mario Kart completely different in order not to split the public but F-Zero has always been based on technological power, which made sense for N64 and GC that were aligned with the most powerful systems in the market but not for Wii and Switch.
@@banjobro64 F-Zero is very different from Mario Kart though, being a more skill-focused game, so I'd say F-Zero deserves its own lane seperate from Mario Kart. But they've been fusing F-Zero with Mario Kart, which me and a few of my friends don't agree with. Now, as for Diddy Kong racing, I'd call that more of a spin-off in the Donkey Kong franchise than a series of its own depending on how you see it.
@@StatickyCat Sure it is different as a game but the challenge here is to find a different market/target than MK. Casuals, children and Nintendo fans will like MK more and hardcore gamers can enjoy MK a lot as well (the gameplay is really profound and the shortcut system draw a line between true hardcores and casuals, and if you do not like items just turn them off). Nintendo experimented a bit with Diddy Kong Racing and F-Zero to test the market and the winner happened to be MK. F-Zero could appeal a niche of futuristic racing fans but I think that more power is needed to have acceptable results. Also, it would need a massive investment in graphics and online support. In other words, it should compete with other HD Sony/Xbox productions. Adults looking for realistic races would go for GT or other simulative games. I suspect there is not a wide enough market for fans of arcade hardcore futuristic races....at least among Nintendo users...
@ I do know where you’re getting at. Besides, F-Zero is way too good for way too few, a hassle for Nintendo. And I’d even call Diddy Kong racing superior in some ways to even Mario Kart 8, but I think the game being more complex in some ways than Mario Kart didn’t sell it. Which is too bad in my opinion, because that shows that for Nintendo’s own betterment, the technically inclined are left out.
My confusion with this reasoning is why people think this series would be more potent as opposed to those local pandemic years A new Donkey Kong game in 2018 makes more sense if for no other reason people still had an appetite for the switch as a concept. Riding high off of Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing was on the horizon, Pokemon SV albeit with mixed results. A lot of first party, or at least recognizable icons were on the lineup Not only that, these games were different in a way. We recieved a new Kirby title that geared your perspective beyond the 2D domain that the series was becoming known for. What this means is that you were getting a lot of bold takes that didn't rely on the usual console based gimmick, demonstrating the creative throughput from the developers even as early as 2018 A new Donkey Kong game during that period made the same amount of sense that A link between worlds did on lesser hardware. They kept their vision in line with what the series had been known for while adding a layer of depth which made the game noteworthy. With DK this would mean you're still the getting bombastic minecart experience that we've come to expect, while laying in place a new element which helps us see the series in a different light In my opinion this was Metroid Dread. They overhauled the to visuals to theatric levels of quality, but incorporated the parry mechanic to accompany said visuals in order to give the impression that you're really in Samus' bullet time world At that time, Metroid's primary selling point was overcoming the drought. We don't necessarily have that with Donkey Kong in Pandemic based timeline. Im sure that's topical now, but my point is that _by now_ they would have to completely reintroduce Donkey Kong into the beyond category, alongside our anticipation of the next Switch. Why have a new title that does pretty much what the available titles have done: serve as a renaissance for classic staples of times past. That's going the Shadow Generations route By that metric they ought to simply remake the first Country title, patting themselves on the back for churning out 3D renders of what's available. And you have to remember that the original was slated to be a much different angle where Donkey Kong fit general template of that breakout title We were able to experience a rich, feature length game with all that atmosphere because of this. In other words it was Rare that pulled a rabbit out of the hat, not nintendo, its like a local amusement park being brought under the umbrella of six flags. The jobbers did all the work for the parent company to make it relevant with brand recognition and plenty of merchandise on deck What does Nintendo have in its bag of tricks these days to introduce us to a consistent theme in the gameplay department? This is comparatively an absolute retreading of the way they are handling Metroid Prime. If it comes out at all, it will do so after a ton of revisions and regime changes before they deem it adequate to sport Nintendo quality standards. If not, DK will go the way of Starfox. They seemingly don't understand what makes the IP noteworthy and reintroduce it to us like they had a shipworthy product waiting in the wings this whole time
Games that’s old that don’t play better don’t give trophies aren’t worth to pay full price for if you didn’t get the Wii or even the Wii Wii U this game was released on then get it but it shouldn’t cost full price
Because Donkey Kong was prominent in the Mario film so Nintendos trying to push out releases that relate to him. We got that dope ass MvDK remake out of this push too
I 100% Tropical Freeze on switch and loved it!!! I got it free on Wii U through club nintendo and only beat it but I did way more in the switch version. However, I only played some of the 3DS version of Returns and never even beat it. I will be using my Fredmeyer gift card to get Returns HD for free. Thanks, gma for the Christmas gift!!!
As someone who doesn't play much Nintendo, DK was my jam! The theme, music, playstyle, etc. is all superior to Mario side-scrolling platformers in my humble opinion. The whole Mario and Peach thing got boring. This is where the fun adventure is at!
Absolutely! There's just something special about a DK game, and I totally get that. Mario and peach can get old. But going to get my bananas back will never bore me!
Something to also keep in mind when talking about remakes/remasters/ports for the switch is that the install base is SIGNIFICANTLY higher on the Switch than the Wii U. Ik that returns is not a Wii U game but tropical freeze was, so for Nintendo they get to introduce an audience to what is essentially a new game to them, while not having to put in the effort of an actual new game. Do I like this practice? Not at all. But I understand it. I'm personally not burnt out on Mario Kart 8 deluxe and other Wii U ports because I never owned a Wii U.
I love this game to death, I’ll get it as some point, it just can’t be at a ridiculous price. But if I’m being honest, I have more questions about the negativity against this game.
Seems to me like this game should’ve come out in 2020 to mark 10 years since the wii release Kirby Return to Dream Land should’ve come out in 2021 for the same reason
There was going to be one developed by Vicarious Visions, but Activision cancelled it and make them work on Call of Duty instead. Which ironically they did the exact same thing to Toys 4 Bob while developing Crash Bandicoot 5. I really hate Activison.
I’m a Zelda fan and donkey Kong fan, but I was a donkey Kong fan before Zelda. I love donkey Kong world so much that when I was younger, I painted my room to be like a jungle beach background… I’m actually really happy it’s coming out on switch. I was actually praying for years before. Not sure if they would actually do it. It’s nice knowing that I won’t have to go through all the trouble setting up my Wii U or 3ds to play
I'll take it, because I like how you can play it with HD and with button controls combined (Wii had motion controls while better quality while 3DS had button controls but choppier quality) But even though I love this game, there wasn't any reason for it to get back on the Switch. Sure, nice to get a DK game actually come back after 10 years (this is a really good one), but come on
Alot of yall are overlooking that momentum based dk game that got cancelled the footage of that game puts any modern sonic game to shame and it was definitely an interesting concept
@aidan_548 I just looked around for you and it's kinda hard to find but check out Arlo's "the 3d dk game of my dreams was cancelled" he does a pretty good job with it
I have so much nostalgia for country returns, was my first introduction to the Donkey Kong series. I probably wont be getting the hd version since I already have it on Wii, but this is still great for people who haven't played it before. Even though Tropical Freeze improves upon it in pretty much every way, its still absolutely worth playing this masterpiece.
Same! I originally had it for the 3Ds and it easily became one of my all time favorites, and even though I do already own it, I can't wait to finally play it again on the big screen
I don't think it's a terrible idea to remaster it, I'm actually really looking forward to it. But it will be nice to play the 3DS version (the one I grew up playing) which is honestly the more definitive version
We Metroid fans have been blessed on Switch, with a brand new game and an outstanding remaster, with Prime 4 still in the horizon I hope Donkey Kong get enough love in the future But I tell you, this is going to be the definitive version of the game I have it working on my 3DS, and beat the game on Wii back in 2012 The Wii version had some awful controls (And believe me, I love motion controls, I refuse to play Skyward Sword on the Pro Controller, and I love RED STEEL 2 on Wii, I am also loving my VR, Meta Quest 3, but for a challenging platformer like DK, it should be optional) But on 3DS it plays great Now we have the best of both worlds The option to play on TV, with good controls
Me too, I do hope that Donkey Kong does eventually get the Metroid treatment on the switch 2. It doesn't even have to be anything too major either, just a new game 😂😂
I disagree with those who feel like the DKCR rerelease on Switch is a “cash grab”. Like everyone else on Earth, I don’t like rebuying games I already have. I’m a recovering Sega fan so I’m very late to the DKC party since I never owned a Super Nintendo. I bought the WiiU and a bunch of games post-failure and after owning a Switch for a few years, since I kept hearing it was Nintendo’s Dreamcast and wanted to check out the library before the inevitable nostalgia/collectors market jacked up the prices again. Tropical Freeze was easily my favorite game from that WiiU lot I picked up and it was my first real experience with a DKC game (I’d played a bit of DKCR on Wii and but the stupid shake controls annoyed me so I sadly never got into it). This video made great points regarding the strategy of the WiiU title rereleases on Switch and I’d personally rather pay $60 for a rerelease of a WiiU game than buy an aftermarket WiiU (now with no server support) if I was only interested in one or two games from that library. I didn’t and won’t double dip on Tropical Freeze on the Switch since I have my grave robber’s WiiU copy but liked TF so much I tracked down the 3DS port of DKCR and I loved it! The reason for that long walk was to say I am 100% getting DKC Returns on Switch and was excited when it was announced even though I’m a cheap skate and am fortunate enough to already have a 3DS and the DKCR port on it. The 3DS version solves the control issue (and those who don’t mind shake controls may not have a WiiU which solves the analog video problem which is the other issue the Wii copy has) but the 3DS has no consolizer and emulation is a pain/ becoming increasingly impossible so it is locked to the 3DS’s handheld-sized display and dicy ergonomics. If the Switch 2 by some miracle has a 3DS consolizer or is 3DS backwards compatible I guess I won’t buy it, but the odds of that being the case are probably close to 0. And no, it isn’t because Nintendo is greedy- it is because although the DS was a massive success the 3DS flopped and their multi display console the WiiU flopped even harder which was undoubtedly designed the way it was for eventual 3DS/DS cross compatibility/ consolization (just like the SNES and the Gameboy/GBC and GameCube and the GBA were). Their pivot to a console-handheld hybrid strategy was a massive success and you don’t win by moving backwards. BTW I’ve since played all the Country games (Tropical Freeze is still the best - as it should be since it is the latest entry) but they all rule and I can’t wait to be able to play the fabulous DKCR on any TV or monitor, easily capture footage for recording or streaming, and play on a variety of controllers (almost all of which are more comfortable than a 3DS). The gem that is DKC Returns needed a rerelease outside of a dead handheld for everyone else late to the party and I bet it sells well and helps revitalize the series even if a new title isn’t already in the chamber. Sorry for the wall of text.
I also own it on the 3Ds as well, and although it does fix a lot of issues the Wii version had, I'm still very much anticipating it's release on the switch. Funnily enough I've never owned the original on Wii, only the 3Ds version. To be able to play that on a home console is something I've always been dying to do (even though I could've easily bought it for the Wii). I am very hopeful that my assumptions are right, but if not I am happy to get this game again despite having played it plenty of times before 😂
Not only does a new game seem likely after a re-release of an older title, but they’ve nearly finished the rounds of all of their classic characters-Kirby, Samus, Yoshi, etc.-receiving spotlight. Only Star Fox and DK remain from what I can remember! This was a great video. Solid jokes and nicely presented.
It does seem like that, and if the switch 2 ends up truly just being a switch successor I feel it would be appropriate to focus on giving DK and Star Fox the spotlight first. Also love the positive feedback!
Yes. I'm hopeful the DKCR port means we're getting the third game down the line. I also think the Dark Moon remake is a hint that we'll be getting Luigi's Mansion 4 near the Switch 2's launch
Even if I had to wait another 6 years I know David Wise will make the awsome music for the series but idk when it will come but, another DKC platformer is going to be a great hit. All i care is for the lovely music and the final boss that DK will some how destroy the country while somehow mending it back just to save the world. =ω=💦
I thought DK64 was fun but it didn’t have the precise gameplay and mechanics or challenge of DK country. My biggest problem with DK64 is that you’d always be walking around the same places all the time and it’s slow paced. I do think DK64 was great in its boss fights and mine cart levels because they actually were interesting and challenging, in my opinion.
Tropical Freeze is one of the finest games ever made. Returns is amazing as well, and my second most anticipated game, only after Monster Hunter Wilds. Great video. Subbed
I hope DK gets the justice he deserves. Tropical Freeze is one of my favourite games ever and Returns is rlly pretty good too. Love my boi DK,favourite Nintendo Character for sure.
Goig to play it with my Mom who loved Tropical Freeze when it came out! Times were tough and missed out on the Wii one, bought 3DS version. Has button support and extra levels. But adding HD, easier multi-player (than 3DS), no waggle (than Wii), with the extra levels. It's like Returns "Definitve Edition" I think it makes more sense than Luigis Mansion 2. 3DS port is also half the frame-rate.
I do like that it is the most definitive version of the game. And despite the fact I already own it on 3ds, I still am very excited to play it on the switch
I certainly get the appeal of Metroid Prime Remastered, as I hopped on the chance to buy it, with one having to pay a fortune on deals for GameBoy or Wii releases for the game, so a release for the Switch with spectacular effects was a win. But DKCR HD? It was released for the Nintendo 3DS and ironically, HD’s effects look like a step down from the previous releases. I do not get why it is necessary. If I am being honest, a remaster for Jungle Beat would be more neat, and after Nintendo Switch Sports, it seems like it could work.
Frankly if Nintendo just took the Country titles from SNES and released a full 3D remake of them using all of the inocinc stages, it would sell likehot cake. Evn now, the DK trilogy on SNES are the best ones, they are hard but not infuriatingly hard like Tropical Freeze. Frankly it feels the new DK games are, well, too out of place with reality, they remind me of Crash 4, and how it was just Crash 1 but with 3000 more issues XD
Soon the gap between Tropical Freeze and the present will be just as long as the gap between DKC3 and Returns. They’ll have to make Donkey Kong Country Returns Returns.
6:10 one possible answer is that they rightly see DK as part of the Mario Universe, which other Nintendo IPs really aren't. DK and Mario have always existed side by side in the same universe. While other IPs like Link and Kirby have occasionally had cameo appearances here and there, it's never been clear that any other Nintendo IPs are actually canonically part of the Mario Universe. DK is pretty much a guaranteed part of any Mario party game, sports game, etc. It's franchise also predates Mario solo games and so is recognizable to a wider swatch of people than sone of the newer mario spin off franchises like Wario or Captain Toad. I think Zelda would make a lot of sense as an expansion to the theme park, but really it's hard to think of anything more natural than them building first the core IP of the Marioverse with DK.
I agree that it's very much connected to Mario, however when we do look at the whole expansion it is very Donkey Kong country as compared to Donkey Kong in the Mario spin offs. Like when it comes to the park and the movie they're very quick to point out that these are two separate "worlds"
I appreciate the amount of work gone into this video. Excellent work dude. Really enjoyed this video...now i must return to prep my donkey kong country 2 stream and spend hours dying over and over 😅 but i will leave a sub on my way out 👍
@@hubblebublumbubwub5215Then they shouldnt whine when people emulate their games they dont even rerealise that isnt locked behind a paywall and you just rent them.
@@kazoorion7993 That's an entirely different topic. It doesn't bother me at all if people emulate Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. All I'm saying is that the Switch has 5 Zelda games already, one of them released not so long ago.
Really good video! I love the way you present your information and express your thoughts in a comedic yet fast-paced manner! Can't wait to see what you make next ^^
It's because we're gonna get a DK movie and they were adding a DK section to Mario World Theme Park (sry, I didn't have time to finish the video, so if you said that, too bad)
It’s very odd, because I definitely agree with you when it comes to how Nintendo sees DK. A very valuable franchise and character for them. But if that’s the case, how did we get almost nothing new in the 10 years Tropical Freeze came out?? (Besides the Mario + Rabbids Donkey Kong DLC.) Even if they thought there was no point in making another 2D game, there’s a wide variety of genres they could’ve pursued. One of the most obvious being 3D. I mean hell, even Kirby broke away from 2D and became the one of the best-selling Kirby games because of it.
I totally agree, I love DK but I'm also ok with them changing up genres. I mean the 2000's had so many different kinds of DK games, idk why they wouldn't continue to experiment in the 2010's
Actually Punch out could have been really good for the switch. Now that you mention it I'm surprised we didn't really get any arms/punch out cross over. I know it didn't do all that well, but still that could have been interesting
@@Mintcar923 I feel like they are trying to go back to that a little bit with them remaking Mario vs Donkey Kong. But personally I would much rather them start treating donkey Kong as his own distinct thing again
It’s mainly a filler, but might be also used to create a little more market awareness for a new release on the Switch 2….plus, tho this game doesn’t seem that old to us, there’s a good chunk of kids who haven’t played it yet. I will be fine with my 3ds version
That is something I did consider when writing the video, but typically when it comes to games like that Nintendo generally does a lot of improvements to them to make them the best version possible. Granted DKCR is a gorgeous game as it is, it just feels a little underwhelming
IMO the DKCR remaster is a signal that a new game is coming and they’re looking to gauge interest in the property, like Pikmin 3 DX and Metroid Prime HD Although the remaster coming so late kinda confirms to me that a new game probably isn’t ready yet, they’ll want to give DKCRHD at least a year of breathing room before a new game
I will point out that we are getting the complete World 9 in DKC Returns HD that was originally exclusive to the 3DS port. Now am I saying is that enough to justify paying $60 for what's soon to be a 15-year-old game? No. But at the very least I know I'm paying for something that's a complete product and likely not a buggy mess that many games nowadays seem to be upon release. This whole, "paying full price for what is essentially a lazy port" has to blow over at some point.
I do understand that take, although I think when it comes to us Nintendo fans we almost expect a high level of quality to begin with (it would be nice if that was industry standard), if it isn't anything more most of us consider it lazy. I still think the game looks and will probably play great, but at the end of the day it is the same game, just enhanced a bit. Still going to buy it though 😂😂
I think it's obvious what's going on here, Retro Studios, who made Returns and Tropical Freeze, after the Tropical Freeze port, were making the remasters of the Metroid Prime trilogy for Switch. While Nintendo commissioned Prime 4 from another developer, when this developer failed to make Prime 4 a quality game, in 2019 development was restarted with Retro Studios returning although it only managed to make the remaster of the first Prime game, that's why there is the rumor that Prime 2 and Prime 3 will be simple ports and not remasters, because Retro is very busy with Prime 4 with all the staff they have hired. But since Nintendo needed a "NEW" Donkey Kong game to replace Tropical Freeze to promote the park and the movie, since their options were either a Country Returns port or a DK64 Remake, they chose the first option and AFTER Retro finishes with Prime 4, they will return to the Donkey Kong franchise. Now we have every DKCountry game on Switch and well, appreciate the new games we will get guys, the more advanced the Nintendo console is, the longer the development times will be for new games, it was this port of nothing until Retro can do another DK game.
Very fair point, I've always felt the restarting of Prime 4 with retro did cause a shake up for some of the games we've been expecting (ie prime 2 And 3 as well as a New DK game) hopefully with prime 4 coming out next year we should hopefully start to see a lot of this other stuff trickle out. I'm all for quality games, but there's also something to be said about it being over a decade at this point. Hopefully we get some sort of news like a direct soon
To be honest I feel like Super Nintendo World is a big reason for DKCRHD, maybe even the main reason. Simply because the land takes SOOOO much from DKCR, even having the Tiki Taks in the minecart coaster. (Not complaining BTW since I absolutely love DKCR.) But the idea of getting a new mainline DK game sounds awesome. I'm guessing they're saving it for Switch 2. I just hope it's high-quality since they've supposedly been saving it for that long...
I would love that too! Although I think waiting to get something like that on the switch 2 might give it the opportunity to be one of the best looking games in there
I’m not worried about the reasoning. I am happy to have the game for a system other than my 3DS. I passed on the Wii version due to the waggle controls and, well, the 3DS is exclusively a handheld. I am also of the mind that Returns is better than Tropical Freeze. Not sure if that is a controversial take or not.
I don't think that's too controversial of a take, honestly I have a ton of nostalgia for returns myself and would probably say the same thing but I am also just happy to have this on a new console with the goofy controls
To be fair, this might become the definitive way to play Donkey Kong Country Returns, since the Wii original uses forced motion controls and the 3DS version is a graphical downgrade. But it would be great if we got a new 3D Donkey Kong game, which they could call Donkey Kong World, and hire Grant Kirkhope to do a new Donkey Kong rap for that game.
I was pretty stoked during the Direct when the teaser started, I was very bummed when it was just another remake. For god's sake Nintendo, please make either a new 3D or 2D DK title.
I can imagine the team pushing for Donkey Kong Returns for Switch we're thinking how basically zero cost it would relatively cost to release , and when making a case to Nintendo leadership , they knew the HD rerelease project would easily get greenlit versus pitching a whole new Donkey Kong game. Also keep in mind, it's VERY likely this HD rerelease is a precursor for a new Donkey Kong. It's easy money that they can turn around and invest in a new game. So I see this as a good signal. And imagine this new DK game getting similar treatment Mario wonder got, with new animations and everything. I think the next step should be to put DK64 on the switch. That game is long overdue for rerelease, considering it wasn't as well received on N64 due to gamers being seriously burnt out on collectathon 3d platformers in that era. DK64 had insane levels of items to collect and players just had enough. I think today, gamers are ready for a 3D plat from Nintendo and DK64 would be a massive success since it has so much to do in the game
Ya, it does truly look like good things are coming for DK, and your reasoning is also very sound especially considering the costs of everything which is something I didn't touch on. I hope we all end up being right!
@aidan_548 definitely, companies like Nintendo are very frugal and invest for the long term. They were able to weather the Wii U era cuz they are basically a debt free company , and I remember reading a business article back then that said Nintendo had stockpiles of cash , and no debt. In that time, so many pieces of shit people in the press were praying on their downfall, but Nintendo knows what they are doing. They have a tested and proven system that works.

The "releasing a remaster/port/remake for the switch in order to get people hyped for the next anouncement of the franchise" is not weird, given that nintendo has been doing this for a while:
Metroid Prime Remaster (2023) - Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (2025)
The Leyend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake (2019) - Echoes of Wisdom (2024)
Bayonetta 1+2 in Switch (2018) - Bayonetta 3
Pikmin 3 Deluxe 2020 - Pikmin 4
Famicom Detective Club: Two Case Collection (2021) - Emio The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (2024)
Xenoblade Chronicles Remake (2020) - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022)
Or maybe this is Nintendo's way of saying "hey, don't worry, we still remember this franchise, anyways, pay us $60 for this lazy port".

You know what we need? A new Punch-Out game, the last one we got was on the Wii almost 15 years ago!
Would not object to that!
It's because that game specifically is what the Universal theme park land is based on.
This is the real answer. Pretty glaringly obvious.
@@aidan_548you’re an idiot.

@@mepishtotally agree!!! I’ve always said that.
I honestly believe its either because Nintendo are now working on games for the Switch's successor, so need filler for Switch in the mean time.

Great video! DK's my favorite franchise and I'm hoping for a new game since finishing DKCTF long years ago. I think we'll be getting the next game on the Switch's sucessor in it's first year of release.
God, I hope so man!
I'm kinda worried about this remaster, but what sells that to me, is that there's no a definitive way to play this game even with emulators.
Wii:
+better graphics, 60 fps and minimal input delay compared to emulators
-Forced motion controls, less levels than 3DS port.
3DS:
+Button controls, more levels
-Worse graphics, non unlockable 30 fps
Ya DKCR is definitely in a weird place. On the one hand there are two viable ways to play it currently, however neither are 100% ideal

The F-Zero community seems so small.
Wouldn't it be for the opening of the section at Universal Studios Japan?
0:44 ok, that cracked me up :D first time viewer and I'm hooked
My confusion with this reasoning is why people think this series would be more potent as opposed to those local pandemic years
A new Donkey Kong game in 2018 makes more sense if for no other reason people still had an appetite for the switch as a concept. Riding high off of Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing was on the horizon, Pokemon SV albeit with mixed results. A lot of first party, or at least recognizable icons were on the lineup
Not only that, these games were different in a way. We recieved a new Kirby title that geared your perspective beyond the 2D domain that the series was becoming known for. What this means is that you were getting a lot of bold takes that didn't rely on the usual console based gimmick, demonstrating the creative throughput from the developers even as early as 2018
A new Donkey Kong game during that period made the same amount of sense that A link between worlds did on lesser hardware. They kept their vision in line with what the series had been known for while adding a layer of depth which made the game noteworthy. With DK this would mean you're still the getting bombastic minecart experience that we've come to expect, while laying in place a new element which helps us see the series in a different light
In my opinion this was Metroid Dread. They overhauled the to visuals to theatric levels of quality, but incorporated the parry mechanic to accompany said visuals in order to give the impression that you're really in Samus' bullet time world
At that time, Metroid's primary selling point was overcoming the drought. That's going the Shadow Generations route
By that metric they ought to simply remake the first Country title, patting themselves on the back for churning out 3D renders of what's available. And you have to remember that the original was slated to be a much different angle where Donkey Kong fit general template of that breakout title
We were able to experience a rich, feature length game with all that atmosphere because of this. In other words it was Rare that pulled a rabbit out of the hat, not nintendo, its like a local amusement park being brought under the umbrella of six flags. The jobbers did all the work for the parent company to make it relevant with brand recognition and plenty of merchandise on deck
What does Nintendo have in its bag of tricks these days to introduce us to a consistent theme in the gameplay department? This is comparatively an absolute retreading of the way they are handling Metroid Prime. If it comes out at all, it will do so after a ton of revisions and regime changes before they deem it adequate to sport Nintendo quality standards. If not, DK will go the way of Starfox. They seemingly don't understand what makes the IP noteworthy and reintroduce it to us like they had a shipworthy product waiting in the wings this whole time
Honestly a very fair and very well thought out take

Poor wario land series are even worse of with 0 new games since wii.
I think it's worth it because the 3ds levels have been remastered.
I don't think it's a terrible idea to remaster it, I'm actually really looking forward to it. But it will be nice to play the 3DS version (the one I grew up playing) which is honestly the more definitive version

Hopefully we do end up getting something new soon, I totally agree
We Metroid fans have been blessed on Switch, with a brand new game and an outstanding remaster, with Prime 4 still in the horizon
I hope Donkey Kong get enough love in the future
But I tell you, this is going to be the definitive version of the game
I have it working on my 3DS, and beat the game on Wii back in 2012
The Wii version had some awful controls
(And believe me, I love motion controls, I refuse to play Skyward Sword on the Pro Controller, and I love RED STEEL 2 on Wii, I am also loving my VR, Meta Quest 3, but for a challenging platformer like DK, it should be optional)
But on 3DS it plays great
Now we have the best of both worlds
The option to play on TV, with good controls
I am very hopeful that my assumptions are right, but if not I am happy to get this game again despite having played it plenty of times before 😂
Great video homie, you earned my sub

And despite the fact I already own it on 3ds, I still am very excited to play it on the switch
a sprite based game using SGI workstations from the 90s but rendered at high resolution would be sick. keep the exact same aesthetic as dkc1 but in hd
That could be really neat!
Ya to me that would make a lot more sense, it would also give them an excuse to rerelease the bongos!!
I wouldn't mind seeing the dkc trilogy in the new returns/tropical freeze engine

Really enjoyed this video...now i must return to prep my donkey kong country 2 stream and spend hours dying over and over 😅 but i will leave a sub on my way out 👍
😂😂😂 appreciate the sub! And good luck in dkc 2, I know what you're going through 😂😂
It's because they want to keep releasing games at the end of the Switch's lifecycle when the big studios are working on the next generation.
Following that logic, then where are Zelda Wind Waker and Twilights Princess HD ?
@@kcvriess On the Wii U. They don't have to release every game they possibly can. They just released a Zelda game a month ago.
All I'm saying is that the Switch has 5 Zelda games already, one of them released not so long ago.
this video made me a subscriber 👏🏽
😎🤝
Really good video! I love the way you present your information and express your thoughts in a comedic yet fast-paced manner! Can't wait to see what you make next ^^
Thank you! Appreciate the support!!
Hope they release a new dk on switch 2. Remaking jungle beat would also be cool
@@Mike0193Azul that would be awesome, could you imagine if they also rereleased the DK bongos!
It's because we're gonna get a DK movie and they were adding a DK section to Mario World Theme Park (sry, I didn't have time to finish the video, so if you said that, too bad)
what an awesome T-shirt!
Thanks!
idk I feel like there's a rather large market of players who didn't have a wii or just didn't get the game originally.
I think that's definitely true, but if that's the case why not do it sooner?
we need a new dk game or we’re all losing our minds. i’m tired of getting scraps while almost every other fanbase has gotten a game on the switch :’(
Honestly same, if we get nothing within the next 2-3 years, it'll be so over 🙁
I assume for Donkey Kong Land in Nintendo World. It uses a ton of Tiki imagery.
Good video, I like your channel. Subscription achieved! I am officially the 888th subscriber.
Thanks man, appreciate it!!
Because of the DK theme park at Epic Universe and UE Japan
It’s very odd, because I definitely agree with you when it comes to how Nintendo sees DK. A very valuable franchise and character for them. But if that’s the case, how did we get almost nothing new in the 10 years Tropical Freeze came out?? (Besides the Mario + Rabbids Donkey Kong DLC.)
Even if they thought there was no point in making another 2D game, there’s a wide variety of genres they could’ve pursued.
A remake of the OGs with modern graphics would be good. Make sure it is done well
Where is PUNCH OUT! for the switch?
Actually Punch out could have been really good for the switch. Now that you mention it I'm surprised we didn't really get any arms/punch out cross over. I know it didn't do all that well, but still that could have been interesting
Insane that IP is dormant.. Also Donkey Kong seems underutilized.. They should really go back to Mario & DK being rivals too like the good ol days
@@Mintcar923 I feel like they are trying to go back to that a little bit with them remaking Mario vs Donkey Kong. But personally I would much rather them start treating donkey Kong as his own distinct thing again
They should’ve released this before Tropical Freeze again!
Agreed!
IMO the DKCR remaster is a signal that a new game is coming and they’re looking to gauge interest in the property, like Pikmin 3 DX and Metroid Prime HD
Although the remaster coming so late kinda confirms to me that a new game probably isn’t ready yet, they’ll want to give DKCRHD at least a year of breathing room before a new game
Totally agree!
I just want a 3d dk game made with the same love with mario odyssey with a dk twist and a bomb story and gameplay
Definitely hoping for the same thing, although I doubt DK will get a super in depth story 😂😂
(Not complaining BTW since I absolutely love DKCR.)
But the idea of getting a new mainline DK game sounds awesome. I'm guessing they're saving it for Switch 2.
I just hope it's high-quality since they've supposedly been saving it for that long...
Totally agree!
Really wish they remastered Wario Land Shake It, tbh.
We got both Pizza Tower and Anton Blast on switch, so why not add Wario Land to the mix?
I would love that too! Although I think waiting to get something like that on the switch 2 might give it the opportunity to be one of the best looking games in there
Or better yet, a BRAND NEW Wario Land game.
Like... how it's possible they haven't made one for like 16 years...
"which my life f$ckin suck" is what I also say when I tell ppl my fav is the sonic series 😂😂
Sonic fan, God bless 😂😂😂
Why is it always hands down, never hands up?
Good point 😂😂😂😂
DKC Trilogy needs the same treatment Earthworm Jim got with an HD remake but gameplay staying true to the original.
I would be down with that!
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is not a remake, hell, I'd hardly even call it a remaster
they still kept the horrible camera controls, they didnt even TRY!
I mean at least it's on a console 😂😂
@aidan_548 you need to know the difference between remakes, remasters, and ports, because there's a huge difference
Dude a new dk rap would go so hard!
Im still waitimg for the new F-zero game
I was pretty stoked during the Direct when the teaser started, I was very bummed when it was just another remake.
For god's sake Nintendo, please make either a new 3D or 2D DK title.
Same 😂😂 I was so hyped and then I was like wait I know this game😂
Donkey Kong Country!!!! That’s the remake we need
they wont do that since they are free on NSO
Also I think it would be weird to play that game without its original graphics
@@aidan_548 Unexpected games had their remakes so you never know but that is the remake a lot of people want
@@aidan_548 I mean Sonic had the same 3D effect play and look it got remastered and it looks great.
@@OvnicentAparatus very true, never say never ig
Maybe because they literally just added
A donkey Kong theme
Park
We need DKCR 3, also bring back David wise pls‼️
Totally agree!!
I want prime 2 and 3 remaster.
Me too man, me too
I can imagine the team pushing for Donkey Kong Returns for Switch we're thinking how basically zero cost it would relatively cost to release , and when making a case to Nintendo leadership , they knew the HD rerelease project would easily get greenlit versus pitching a whole new Donkey Kong game.
