      Going with the wheel theme, make Mechanum wheels. It requires a bit of logic to make the combinations work, but it basically lets you go in any direction using only wheels. (Diagonal and sideways as well!)
      It's also definitely possible in Besiege, I've actually made them already. It takes a bit of tuning to make the wheels not slip, but it does work.

    Hey Reid - your problem with the reaction wheel is that it has to be (on average) near the center of mass. If you have it near the side, it will produce weird angular torques that tilt your thing as you noticed. This problem could be solved by having two mirror reaction wheels on the bottom & top, which average out to being 'in the center'

    • @amos9274
      @amos9274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      nope, it's because of gyroscopic precession. There's also no fix for it as it's an inherent property of spinning bodies.

      Next time you ride a bike try to consciously turn. You will realise that in order to turn right for example you first turn left and then the bike tilts to the right and the wheel corrects itself to the right. If he actually inverted the controls and tapped right he would stir right and then if he tapped left he would balance himself back straight.

    This is really cool! One of my favorite builds so far. I was wondering if it could be more stable if the inner part was larger and formed like a half circle so it doesn't climb as much, but maybe that wasn't an issue. Could you also make turning with pistons with weight on them, so they extend to the side you want it to tilt towards

  • @NolanAlighieri
    @NolanAlighieri 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think monowheels usually have an upside-down triangle on the inner diameter with runners on each vertices to help guide the main engine and to keep it aligned with the wheel to prevent it from falling out of the wheel.

  • @antipastamony
    @antipastamony 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    fyi effective reaction wheels can be made using braces rather than having to rely on mass at the outer radius. this works because for "legitimate and understandable reasons" the game treats braces as if they are moving through a viscous medium during rotation-based calculations. this unintuitive property is also worth keeping in mind when making any quickly rotating part as it can give rise to unexpected resistance that gives the illusion of friction as well as exaggerated wheelie forces and the like.
    you could of course use flat block stabilization but that goes a bit too far into glitch territory for the ethos of this channel.

    Instead of moving the side reaction wheels out to prevent them from hitting the ground, put a bearring thing on the wheel, and brace that bearring to whatever the wheel hits to prevent it from hitting, and to where the reaction wheel is connected to prevent wobbling. (In my tests, this has been able to support 6 stacked wheels, each at power 2, with extra weight without wobbling or unwanted collisions. Not in unbreakable mode.)

  • @-Shinoray-
    @-Shinoray- ปีที่แล้ว

    A few minor or maybe major improvements to the wheel:
    - build the motor curved inside the wheel and put the outside drivewheels higher up the curve. This will allow you to connect them with straps so the whole machine wouldn't be able to fall apart as easily.
    -make the same sensor with the angle only reversed for the flywheelcounterwheel. So when the sensor detects a to harsch angle you would be able to correct it. Next step would be to put another contraption like this for when there is no angle at all so you wouldn't end up overcorrecting
    -put the flywheel more into the middle and copy the whole motor on the top curvature aswell. This would in theory lead to more speed better control and less overtipping.

  • @iamblind253
    @iamblind253 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I honestly think that the easiest way to solve your tilting problem is making sure that the turning wheel is closer to the center of mass. The turning wheel made the top part, or the bottom part turn more than the other and therefore made it tilt

    • @alkali5841
      @alkali5841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, that would be intuitive! But reaction wheels, because they aren’t changing the center of mass, cannot rotate an object around anything but it’s center of mass.

  • @DGEddieDGEtm

    I remember engineering an almost completely multifunctional scorpion. Like, it had a tail that could launch bombs, it had two arms that came in with blades and they just demolished the opposition, it was rear-steered, so it went really well with the raised backside… god I wish I exported it.

  • @efuhh
    @efuhh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm not sure what vehicle you could apply this to but it would be really cool to see you use the angle meters and your reaction wheels to automatically correct something's balance. maybe a unicycle or a walker, or something else that naturally has poor balance

  • @TheTenzen12
    @TheTenzen12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I feel whole thing might work better if there were two or three point of contact instead of only one on bottom. With that it would be also easier put reaction wheel on center of mass.
