Fire! Little Richard taught The Beatles how to "woooh" like that and they returned the favor by covering "Long Tall Sally". Creedence Clearwater Revival covered "Good Golly Miss Molly" ten years later to great effect as well. I think that clip is video of a live performance synched to the studio recording. Little Richard was a singular figure. Also check out "The Girl Can't Help It" and "Keep a-Knockin'". And for more music in that style, check out Big Joe Turner, Larry Williams, and LaVern Baker.

He really struggled with his sexuality. He went through periods of heavy drugs. He became a Christian minister. I think at the end, I'm not sure he accepted himself but it seems that he accepted that some people really did accept him. Complicated person, complicated times. But pure GENIUS!

Little Richard was from Macon, Georgia. When we would visit my maternal grandmother and the rest of my mom's family there, they always talked about him and his antics, He was the pride of Macon. He was also a "hot mess", and kept me laughing whenever he did an interview. He was quick to tell anybody to "shut up". You are right, he was a genius!

Those of us who are old enough to remember the Beatles big 1964 hit, "I Saw Her Standing There" , when they did that "Wooooo!" part, a lot of us recognized that as a throwback to the great Little Richard. Later, in interviews, they confirmed that Little Richard was indeed one of their biggest influences. Pretty obvious that they got that "Wooooo! from him.
