Yes sir, you are right on target! I have had 3 encounters with wolves in the North Georgia mountains. The DNR officers did not believe me. I have hunted these mountains longer than those officers have been alive. We are dealing with out of control government expansion of power. Take care, friend.

You're not kidding. They are smart enough to know that a rifle shot often means food and if it's anywhere near dusk there is a good chance they will beat you to your game. Nothing quite like the thrill of hearing them circle around you in the dark.
Unfortunately I am in Chinada - and carrying handguns for self defense while hunting is prohibited so you are stuck with your bolt or lever action non AR rifle... just don't fire it after dark they will steal your firearms and crucify you for that legally too.

@tbjtbj4786 WOW! That may have been a wolf. My wolf encounters were north of 100 lbs. I have had what I am sure were Coydogs at 60 lbs. They were the size of my PitBull at 69 lbs. People need to be told about these predators because children are very vulnerable to animals this size. As well as everyone else!

Randy, I live in New Jersey and anti-hunting groups got the Governor to cancel our annual black bear hunt 3 years in a row. Then after a marked increase in bear confrontation’s and one attack that resulted in a hiker being killed they reinstituted the hunt and a bow hunter arrowed a 770 lb. black bear in a residential neighborhood. They had to transport the bear out of the neighborhood to field dress it so the homeowners would not see the butchered bear as they said that would be offensive! Hopefully going forward they will realize we need bear hunting to keep things in balance.

Thank you Randy! I too live and hunt in Wyoming and Griz is on my mind whenever I am hunting where they live. My choice of fire arms is a Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull loaded with Lehigh Defense Extreme Penetrator 300 gr traveling 1480 FPS. For many years I carried 300 gr Nosler Partition Handgun bullets and then when I handed my gun to a buddy to finish off a wounded mule deer we found out the Partition couldn't handle the velocity and over expanded with minimal penetration. The Lehigh Defense bullet penetrates almost as deep as a heavier for caliber hard cast lead, but has the benefit of sharp machined flutes to impart added bleeding and a larger wound channel. I also have a 10mm, but I only carry it when griz chances are very low. I also rely on my 338 RUM as my primary elk rifle!

Thanks for your perspective and wisdom, you confirmed my thoughts on 44 vs 10mm, my old mtn gun with the right bullets is good medicine. As an archery hunter a sidearm is required. I live and hunt in North Idaho, not as Grizzly rich but nevertheless one should be prepared. I have heard all the stories from Montana and Wyoming about the aggressive bears. Fish and Game needs a completely new direction in managing these predators. How many good Hunters need to get mauled? Thanks again, I enjoy all your content. Good luck this season!

I actually disagree with you, Randy, about the 10mm for bear. However, I acknowledge and agree with several of the points you made about the other "bear" cartridges - i.e. hard cast, wide flat nose, enough grain weight, etc.
The problem with the 10mm is that there's a lot of "10mm light" loads out there. If you aren't paying attention to the box numbers, you can easily get 40 S&W performance, which you absolutely DON'T want for bears. A 10mm with 220 grain bullets, a hard cast, wide flat nose, at an honest 1200 to 1250 fps has been used a fair number of times (successfully) in Alaska for bear defense. The bullets will traverse the length of the bear, and the recoil is enough less than the 454, 480, and 475 that several controlled shots can be placed in the time that maybe two shots in traditional calibers can be made.
The issues from your example, IMO, are that the hunter probably had some "10mm lite" ammo, and the fact that he had a couple of failures that needed to be cleared. All bad things for bear defense.
Thank you for this discussion, though. I really like hearing your thoughts on everything.

    • @PassivePortfolios
      @PassivePortfolios 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

The problem in some of these cases is that people use the wrong bullets, JHP instead of FMJ, which do not penetrate adequately on bears.

    • @robertneal4112
      @robertneal4112 วันที่ผ่านมา

The other problem is the manufacturers stuffing the larger round into platforms designed for other calibers just to say they have a 10 mm in their line up. The disparity in how 10 mm is loaded also makes it hard to put out a product that works with all ammo. If you are panicking or being mauled, that gun better cycle and not picky about your recoil management.

All grizzly bears are not created equally! Killing a 250 pound griz with a 10mm isn't the same as getting attacked by a 700 lb griz and finding out you don't have enough gun! Two guys that tangled with a large griz by Island Park ID last month put 34 rounds into the bear before getting it killed. 10 mm jammed and so did the semi auto carried by hunter #2. Spray and pray is not a good recipe for defense, take aim and hit your mark and do it with something big enough to finish the fight. For reference there is a mounted griz in the Meeteetse WY museum that was 10' and 1100 lbs and was killing cattle with a single blow.

  • @PassivePortfolios
    @PassivePortfolios 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

Actually there are several accounts of 10 mm stopping bear attacks, as well as weaker rounds stopping bear attacks. One attack with poor shot placement and a jam does not indicate the 10 mm is inadequate for bear defense. With the 10 mm at least there are plenty of rounds available and it is repeatable, with most people able to shoot it.

This could have most likely been avoided. He seen the grizzly from afar and stayed hidden and quiet until they got within 10 yards. This is the dumbest thing you can possibly do especially with a sow and cubs. Always let them know you're there from distance. Once they get to close its almost always going to be atleast a false charge. Not all but most people who get mauled made some pretty big mistakes. I see grizzly all the time and following simple rules haven't had more than a false charge and that was from a wounded sow who just got in a fight with a boar and lost one of her cubs. Do not suprise at close range or corner the bear and they will run away 95% of the time. Carry gun and bear spray don't get to close and don't go slipping through thick timber while there sleeping in day bed. Pay attention to bird activity big clue around kill sites.

I'm not trying to contradict you and I am do not have experience.

The 10mm is taunted as the .357 magnum in a semi-auto. Ok cool.
Both calibers were born from American Law Enforcement wanting more powerful man stopping calibers than the .38 & 9mm respectfully. BOTH CALIBERS WERE BORN OUT OF A PERCEIVED NEED TO INCREASE LETHALITY ON HUMANS!!!
By shear coincidence, both have been able and capable for some limited hunting applications, deer sized game and below, GREAT!
But the issue here is a no nonsense bear defense caliber for attacking grizzlies/Brown bears. No one I know in Alaska carried any handgun below a 44 magnum and most carried yhe big bores.. 460, 480, 500 etc.
My first grizzly encounter I had a .45acp while horseback in Wyoming. My 1st thought was good Gawd horse don't dump me and my second was " I ain't got enough gun." I immediately bought a 44 magnum.
I own several .357's and 10mm, including an Omega back in 1993. Great man stopping cartridges.
Do hunters need a 375, or 338 to hunt in Alaska? Absolutely not. But then, why do they? Because of the possibilities of a bear encounter while field dressing a moose or caribou. Big rifles for protection, hmmm.
To each their own but my experience, education, and training dictate a large Caliber revolver while in Grizz country, not human designed sropping cartridges.

I don't know any details of this attack. Randy's description said the bear came around a large rock and was immediately within ten feet of the hunter, and on him. If that bear was literally on top of him, the worst things about semi-autos is that if you are pressing the muzzle directly into the body/head of the bear, they will go out of battery and not fire. Don't know if that was the case here.

Also, have a 480 ruger alaskan
The 7.5 inch redhawk stainless, rusts like crazy
    1 blackhawk 6.5 inch
Two ,9.5 inch target grey finish,
    All 480 ruger,
The triple k torso rig makes those long barrels carry real easy,
And 2 of those rossie 480 ruger pumas,
That extra velocity from long barrel has the 475 linebaugh coverd.
Got some of those flat nose 430 grain jacketed soft points.
Have not had time to shoot them yet,
The lead tip above the copper jacket
Is too long for the rossie rifles carier feed system.
But they will feed 1 at a time, from the top and chamber/ eject,
    no problem.
Over all it seems more the luck of the person more then the caliber,
And i have come across information that clear bright energy of a person gives better luck then dark cloudy energy of a person,,
Going into a more esoteric viewpoint,
You move to the parrellel universe that matches that clear or cloudy aura energy.
Depending on that individuals billionth of a second placement.. at the time of said event.
And that is the difference between bad luck, Goodluck and great luck.

The 9mm is also a fine choice, with the same caviats. Bigger booms don't magically make up for lack of skill. To the contrary, they generally require far more skill and experience to be used effectively. Stop giving horrible advice.

As someone who lives in Montana and has been to Wyoming. You have to have the tactical awareness of a potato in most of the states to have a bear walk up 10 feet of you and you not know it.

I hear all the time that if you are going into bear country, the 10mm is a great option to carry. I somehow think that a .357 with some of the Buffalo Bore Bear load is better. Mostly because I don't own a 10mm. But, if I were to be going into an area where I felt I needed to be ready for a bear, I would be budgeting for a .44 magnum for sure. The government is out of control everywhere in this nation. You referred to this wildlife employee as Ms. Mrs. or Mr. but with our current government, you should have probably done the research to find out what their pronouns are before you referred to them as anything. Just an example of the ridiculousness in our government. The bear also could have been part of the LGBTXYZQ+ whatever community, which is why this wildlife employee may have been so rude to the man that was attacked.

Poor choice of 10mm semi plus proper ammo with practice so you are not limp wristing that can cause jamming. You can get off three shots with semi in the time you can get one with revolver.

I generally look forward to your commentary but you lost me on this one. I don't have any strong convictions on bear defense in particular, but I am very dubious of this Buffalo Bore/Underwood/Super Vel/Double Tap/Corbon etc. ammunition. I experimented long ago with Corbon and Super Vel and found them to be of questionable safety and I have no reason to think that Buffalo Bore etc. are any different. These are all ammunition assembly operations and not ammunition engineering operations. There is a difference and I don't believe they have some magical ability to produce extra velocity/power ammunition that is actually safe and I have learned long ago there is no free lunch. I am sure the fanboys will have a meltdown upon reading this and all I will add is you do you; it's your firearm and your safety and I am not telling anyone what they should do. I just happen to feel that encouraging the use of this "stuff" is bad advice.

Some of the Buffalo Bore ammo is firearm specific for example, 44 mag +P+ is only suitable for use in Ruger Super Blackhawk and Ruger Redhawk. All firearms are not created equally. I shoot a 454 Casul and sami specs for pressure in the 454 is 65k which is rifle pressure!

@@davecamilleri9411 Fair enough. I will concede that if ammunition is marked for use in a particular type of firearm the risk of harm is significantly reduced (but by no means eliminated). My buddy had Corbon .460 S&W ammunition that was so hot we had to use a plastic hammer and a wooden dowel to drive the empty brass out of the cylinders. The auto pistol rounds are the most seriously spooky of the lot and I have never been a fan of hot rod auto pistol ammunition of any sort, especially when paired with the poly framed variety of pistol. Thanks for sharing!

Did you eat paint as a child randy? A dude with a 10mm just survived 😂

He did and I also personally know someone that survived a grizzly bear attack with a 22 does that mean the 22 caliber is sufficient seriously dude you’re missing the whole point. Your odds are increased with a better weapon.

@TODinWY what's 2 then. A 10mm is comparable to a 357 despite what Randy here thinks, and several bears have been shot with them. More 10mm will be used in bear encounters. For all the whining Randy does about it, ammo selection is important. Also, like Randy aluded to, i dont want a pistol. i want a cannon in a bear encounter, but those are impractical so......

@TODinWY crazy idea. Don't get 10ft from a bear. Narf!
