You are so right about the rubber belts, super duty, ultimate, whatever, they will last no more than 5 minutes. I just ordered a Gates 5L290K; the top width spec is 21/32" and nominal thickness is 3/8". FWIW, my Tomahawk (I call it MoFo) was purchased new in 1994 from Gardenway.
Sweet! Let me know how that belt works out. I called mine MoFo yesterday when I didn't let go of some shrubbery I was shredding fast enough and it tried to drag me into the feeder!
Murray took on the Troy-Bilt chipper/shredder spare parts inventory when Garden Way went bankrupt. Murray is now owned by Briggs & Stratton. The OE belt is still available, p/n 97133MA, dimensions 5/8 x 29 1/4". Pricey but I get a few years of use with this belt. If you run a web search on Trot-Bilt Super Tomahawk an aftermarket NOS source can be found in Colorado. Good luck.
This is the first video I have been able to find with the exact chipper I have. Currently having belt issues and I will do what you suggested in the video. Not all heroes wear capes. You did the work so we didn't have to.
Thank You! My main purpose in creating the video was to help save someone else the headaches I went through! Good luck in getting your machine working!
I purchased the 6 hp unit at a garage sale a few years ago. Replaced the carb and it runs well. I use it every few years to eliminate producing brush piles around the homestead. Yes, biggest headache is going thru even the best belts. I can usually go thru a belt in a few hours of work. I may be asking it to do a lot with the volume of branches and twigs I can process. I have been thinking of putting the entire unit on some large blocks to allow the chips to fall away easier from the exit chute and not back up. Otherwise, this is another great Troy Bilt tool.
Very helpful. I got mine off Craigslist and never owned a chipper before. My clutch level kept popping out. I'll go adjust it now. Also ordering the belt to have a spare on hand. Thank you!
Very helpful information. I just bought this exact chipper at a yard sale and was wondering how the belt tensioner should be adjusted. The person that had it used a bungee to hold the lever in place.
These are great machines especially for the home gardener. Good for making compost and mulch. If you are thinking about buying one make sure the shredder screen is in good condition a new one will cost up to 200 dollars.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have the same model, although they were painted green and branded as "Bolens" in my market. It eats belts like its been on a starvation diet, so I'm looking forward to trying your tension adjustment advice. Unfortunately Amazon don't seem to be stocking the belts you recommend at the moment, so I'll have to carry on with the Stens 265-107 belts I've been using, sadly these don't seem to be kevlar reinforced. Thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback! I hope what I learned helps. The belt I put on in this video finally gave up the ghost a couple days ago after many hours of use and abuse. I guess I should have bought a couple more! :\
Great video thank you for doing this what an older wood chipper trying to figure out how to change the blades it's not the single night does anyone have any ideas or know where to find a video on best way to replace?
Trackor supply sells the 5/8 blue belts for farm equipment I bout two from them to have a back up .. mychipper takes a 27” v belt as well … here where I live at 2023 price was 12.99 If you have a tractor supply near you or you can just go to the website The brand that trackor supply sells is Huskee belts .. I used it all day on a job I did the belt survived all day so far so good lol. Hopefully this is helpful for some one
What is the idle speed spec?? Mine is almost 30 years old and I can verify that "heavy duty or regular" belts self destruct in less than 10 minutes. Kevlar, please. Recently, I had a serious running problem caused by the little governor spring: about a $3 part that disconnected . Hooked it up and back in business.
I have not specifically run garden waste through the shredder, I have run blackberry vines and a variety of yard debris - it should handle tomato plants without a problem. Drier material goes through much more efficiently and less prone to clogging.
If you engage the clutch lever too fast a lot of times that will cause a stall, try easing it on giving the chipper wheel time to spin up as you fully engage the clutch. If that doesn't work, try loosening the belt tension a little.

It's very useful information. Thanks. I have a late 1980s model I bought on Craigslist.
Good video thank you for doing that . I have one I bought of a guy , it’s a bit older that yours but in new condition. No owners manual ether.
Thank you. Having the same issue.

We have a 12 hp model 47044 and cant find blades for it and the blades supposedly can't be sharpened.
Have you ever had to replace the where you crank it at the clutch wheel
@@JohnnyLawson-bl3yx I think you’re missing a word in your question, not sure what you’re asking about.
How do you get the new belt on?
Looking at getting one of these. Can you run tomato plants and other garden waste through this or does it have to be dry material?
I have not specifically run garden waste through the shredder, I have run blackberry vines and a variety of yard debris - it should handle tomato plants without a problem. Drier material goes through much more efficiently and less prone to clogging.
👍😎Nice job!
My engine stalls when I engage the clutch lever. Any suggestions ? Thanks.
If you engage the clutch lever too fast a lot of times that will cause a stall, try easing it on giving the chipper wheel time to spin up as you fully engage the clutch. If that doesn't work, try loosening the belt tension a little.
Thanks for your suggestion. 👌
So does the belt just sit loosely in there?
When the clutch is not engaged the belt fits loosely on the drive pulleys. With the clutch engaged it will be snug.
Seems the older units work better. The 10 hp. units of 2022 have to be force fed.
Super helpful, thanks!
