What's The Best Microphone For Your iPhone or Android? - Saramonic Blink 500

- Each and every year, Apple introduces a new iPhone that in some way, is better than the previous model.
With the iPhone 11 Pro, the main attraction is the new triple lens camera along with enhanced camera features. However, anyone who has ever produced a video knows that the image is only one part of the equation and having clear audio is equally as important as the video. In this segment, I compare the iPhone’s built in microphone with MOVO's mini shotgun, PowerDeWise wired lavalier and Saramonic's new Blink 500 DI wireless microphone system.
While I've only been using Saramonic products for a few weeks, I'm quickly becoming a fan of their products. In my opinion, the Blink 500 DI is the easiest to use wireless microphone for your camera phone video.

One of the most professional reviews I’ve ever seen. Excellent job.
Thank You!
This review is fantastic; so happy we found it! Thank you so much for including the VXR10 in this.
I just bought this for Facebook Live and it doesn't work. It works fine on my native video camera on iphone. I read that there is a work around to make it work with Facebook Live...any advice?
Let me share my experience with this setup. I tried it with several android phones and none of the phones own photo/video app recognize the microphone. Saramonic has own 3th part app/apk called SmartRecorder.
I installed it on my previous mobile OnePlus and it worked fine, you just need to be aware to put the phone on flight mode since any kind of message or similar can cause it to stop and loose all the recording. Happened to me!!. Other issue for me is that it has no smooth zoom transition, but it has this jumpy zoom mode which is a bit anoying. Now i bought a new Pixel 7 pro cause of the photo/video quality with zoom etc, buuut.. the sound is not being recorded at the highest pitch and the result is lower sound/tone. Something, somewhere in the process in the phone or app is making it lower or not allowing to full extent. Pixel can't help since it's not their app or microphone, and Saramonic can't tell why. From what i can see is that the SmartRecorder app is possible to download from Applestore meaning it's probably more adjusted for iphones than android since as said you must download it via an extern link. So it is kind of a gamble will it or will it not work..
Perfect and very helpful review - Thank you very much from Germany !
Great review. I have ordered one.
Thank you.
Great review and informative. Have you tried the Saramonic with a gimbal?
Yes. It worked well.
Thank you for great review , technology gotta love it...
Goooood review!! Thank you
finally somebody showing proper examples of the sounds.
so all of the models of the saramonic turn the audio into mono?!
Thank You!
I just got mine for my kids videos and I LOVE IT WORKS JUST PERFECT ♥️ I’m about to post a new video on Thursday using the mic 😁😁😁 so exited you can see the videos before with out mic and after using it big difference!!!!😏😑 but glad I have it now 🤩 great video congrats !!!!
Is this better than the MOVO edge and the comica boom with the type c USB
Great video
Great job
Does this block the phone microphone too?
Yes. Only the phone or the inserted microphone can record.
Can we connect the sarmonic with my earbuds altogether?
Hello! Unfortunately, my recordings with my iphone 8 and the Blink 500 pro pick up a bunch of static. Is it possible that my lightning port is damaged and causing that hissing sound in my audio recordings?
My guess would be either the dongle or the cable may need to be replaced. Also, make sure they are fully connected.
Yes same like my problem, can’t use to iPhone 8 Plus , can’t use with canon g7 mark 11 , can’t use with canon 1300d but can used with my iPad r2 😵💫
Hi there Andy, thanks for a superb review. I’m tentatively interested in this mic for filming on my iPhone 12. However, may I please ask what methods Saromonic offer for wind reduction, dead cats or otherwise. Do you have any experiences to share with this mic and wind? Thanks in advance. Ross
Really nice vid 🤗
Which one do you prefer Blink500 or Rode Wireless Go?
In my opinion, I prefer the Blink 500 for use with a phone.
The Gadget Guru thank you so much
The Gadget Guru You thing the connector is easy to break?
Great review. What volume setting do you use on the receiver? Thanks
Does the Saramonic work with Samsung Note 9?
Hey Andy I would like to see the GoPro model you use in the bus
I would typically use three GoPro Hero 7's when producing on the bus. I would feed the audio into one of the GoPro's using the audio adapter.
Ok this is the one who bought the bus
Is this Melania in the back? :)
hello I'm from Indonesia. greetings and success always
Thanks for the very informative video! Does the Saramonic 500 connects automatically to both iPhones and Androids video recording apps or is there some kind of extra setup needed?
While I didn't try this with an Android phone, it connected to the default iPhone video program without any issues or complicated settings. Just plug and play.
Hi there it doesnt connect with an android camera you need to download another video app that allows you to change to an external mic.
Hello my friend. First of all, congratulate your channel. I would like to know between this model of Saramonic Blink 500 B2 and the models of BOYA (BOYA BY WM4 PRO, BY WM6, WM8 and etc.) all wireless, what are the main characteristics that differentiate you in the market? I'm looking for a wireless microphone for home use, home videos and to use on my smartphone, but that had a good cost-benefit ratio. Another question I have is that if I buy the normal version of it (Blink 500 B2) and put an adapter on my smartphone will it work normally? Mine is a HUAWEI P30 PRO (connection type C) because only then could I reuse the microphone in DSLR cameras and in the notebook sporadically.
Friend, is there a dead cat that I find to use in the fixed microphone of this device? Why did I see that when used to record in windy environments using it (without using the lapel microphone), there is a lot of noise?
Grateful for the help and attention. Strong hug.
hi, thank you for a great video. I have an important question - one that NO ONE ever addressed in their videos - i bought the B2 model - i plugged in the TRRRS cable from the receiver into the android mobile phone audio jack. So the mic is picking up from my voice to the mobile . However, if i am using it with zoom, with the audio jack already plugged in, how do i hear sounds from the other party on zoom ?
Since I'm an iPhone user, I can't tell you if an Android phone has settings that allow for the mic and speaker can be set to come from different internal/external sources. With that said, this should work. Check back and let us know the results. amzn.to/3hgjDk8
@@TheGadgetGuru this is very helpful. Thank you very much
Will this work with Facebook live? Keeping in sync?
That's what I'm hoping to hear also. I've seen one other review that say that you *can* use it with FB Live, but it was just a product review on a shopping site. I'd like to hear from someone who can confirm. I went ahead and purchased the system and should receive it in a week. if no one else answers, I'll try to remember to come back here and update
UPDATE: it works, but you have to turn the mic on *after* you start the Facebook Live event. Confirmed with a colleague and his worked the same way - start the Facebook live event, turn on mic, and you’re good. If you turn it on prior to hitting the Facebook Live shutter, it won’t work.
I used my new Blink500 B4 for a TH-cam stream today at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, CA (very windy, sound of the waves etc) and was told I sounded good. When I listened to the playback I was happy with the sound. VERY easy to set up, love the fact it plugs right into the Lightning port versus the RodeGO that would need a dongle.
Is there interference nearby WiFi devices?
Thanks a lot for in-depth comparison! Super impressed with Blink 500. Can I use it to improve Skype call quality on iOS? The main question, when I pop the transmitter in, does it block the iPhone/iPad speaker or can I still use it? Can I use this mic while hearing Skype call through a wired headphone or airpods? Thats the only question that stops me from buying it right now, ad I am trying to improve conference calls on iOS, for just recording it is much easier. Thanks in advance!
Hi Andy I have watched a bunch of your vids. Hope u get back soon with Motorcoach reporting. I bought the saramonic system for my iPhone X. I can’t get the audio to record. Saramonic claims I need to use a different app from what is part of the iPhone system. Any thoughts?
Thanks Larry. I used it with the standard iPhone video recorder. Which app are you trying to use? And, which version of the Blink 500 are you using? Does it connect to your phone directly (Di model) or does it connect via a cable?
Newest model for iPhone. I have an iPhone X. I think i figured it out. But the app was film maker pro.
Thanks for ur help. Happy travels.
I like you. Great guy! Wish we were friends and could work on video together. Remind me of my grandpa....
Where can I get link 500
There's a variety of configurations. Here's a link to the Amazon page: amzn.to/2VA6jwE
Thanks for this. I've been considering the Blink or the Røde Wireless GO. I do standup comedy and film my sets by setting up my camcorder at the back of the room. The sounds okay as the camera picks up the audio from the club's speakers and the audience reaction but I'd like to improve it. My concern is that while a wireless setup will improve my input, I suspect the audience reaction won't be picked up very well. Thoughts?
You can use two transmitters/mics
Thanks!!!! I Was looking for this info, If does it work in iPhone 11?
You answered to me! I wanna use the following configuration : iPhone 11 + saramonic b500 b2 and a dji osmo.
Yes, it does work with an iPhone 11 while mounted to an Osmo Mobile 3.
Mine is osmo mobile 2, why doesn’t work with it?
@@carlosvilaca7691 I didn't try it with the Osmo Mobile 2, but as long as you can access the phone's port, it should work.
I tried Saramonic Blink 500 DI Lightning with iPhone 11 Pro Max using Filmic Pro app, It gave me low volume level when recording, I wonder if you edit audio in post.
Been noticing the same thing with my new 500 B4, gain setting 2 is way too low so I'm experimenting with gain level 3 or 4. Of course I can boost in post but gain level 2 needs a 400% boost in iMovie and it's STILL low. Definitely default to gain setting 3 in my opinion.
Does your blink 500 b3 also have a much too low audio level, so you have to level up the volume in post production?
Yes!!.. no issue on OnePlus phone, changed to Pixel phone and it records at low audio level. Why??.. no idea. Does not work with any android orginal photo app, must use SmartRecorder apk , Saramonics own. It is at is developed for iphones since it can be downloaded from apple store and not from play store..
What’s the range of the saramonic Andy?
While I haven't performed a full range test (I think some of the tests are a bit over the top), it performed well walking around my backyard and through my living room. I've noticed that with all of the 2.4GHz mics, they can quickly lose signal when out of line of site to the receiver. So far, this has performed with a similar range to the Sennheiser XS and Rode Wireless Go. I hope to have a comparison with the Blink to those models as well as the Pico unit up soon.
Thank you for your response 👍🏻
Simplesmente fantástico !!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent. :-)):-))
