Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was never meant to be released on The Nintendo Wii U, since the games engine wasn't compatible with the system. SEGA had a 3 game partnership with Nintendo at the time and they made the developer "Big Red Button" rush the game and release it on the Wii U so that it would come out along side the Sonic Boom show. Since the games engine wasn't compatible with the Wii U, the game had to be remade from scratch and Red Button had less time to finish it, so the final game was released in a broken state in 2014, thanks to SEGA. Big Red Button were the victim of corporate meddling and thankfully didn't shut down thanks to SEGA's BS.
Sega pulled some more BS around the promotion and release of the game too: 1. The trailer for Sonic Boom almost literally LIED to gamers and Sonic fans by running game footage off of a PC, rather than the infamously underpowered Wii U, and many graphical and gameplay elements featured in the trailer were NOT featured in the final release. 2. Sega refused to send review copies to journalists, so people couldn't review the game until it released. *Sega didn't even do this for Sonic 06* They knew they were releasing a piece of sh*t!
Funnily enough there was a separate Sonic Boom game for 3DS called Shattered Crystal though is essentially just a handheld version of this game. Both of them served as prequels to the show which was actually received well despite the change in tone. Funnily enough Shattered Crystal got an exclusive sequel called Fire and Ice. Luckily they established that Sonic Boom is an entirely separate dimension in the Sonic multiverse (yes this is a thing) so it doesn’t have much of an impact on the main series. Also on not touching a WiiU, that’s very sadly something that happened to many people. The WiiU was a commercial failure due to poor marketing which is why we have the Switch.
You know despite the game not being good, want to know the funny part? The Cartoon that Jacob mentioned is genuinely funny, seriously how can they make a cartoon that's genuinely kinda good and then make a broken mess of a game?!
I think the game was originally going to be a sonic origin story that was completely different to this, but they were told pretty late that they were making it for a completely different system and that they had to make it fit with the cartoon.
I hope one day you react to a few "What Happened?" videos by Matt McMuscles. Those videos tell the backstory of video games (and some movies) that are infamous for being poor quality or unpopular. Matt made videos explaining the development of Balan Wonderworld and Sonic Boom, as well as many other games that almost killed their franchises.

Here's how Rings in Sonic games work: -You collect them as you run through the level. If you get hit by an enemy, you drop all of your rings. This happens whether you have one ring or a hundred rings. If you get hit without having rings, you die, so it's always beneficial to have at least a single ring. -In the old games, each ring you have will increase your score at the end of the level, and can increase your rank in some games. -In some newer games with speed boosting, rings will fill up your boost meter, allowing you to boost faster and longer.
Don’t forget: -in other older Sonic titles, 100 rings get you an extra life -the 2-D GBA Sonic games had rings increase your max speed -All games with Super Sonic available, rings were your timer for how long it can stay active and it took 50 rings to activate it in some titles -Sonic and the Black Knight had rings used for giving to NPCs for useless and stupid side quests and buying collectibles that felt just like the side quests: pointless and stupid
I think time travel is a fine element in stories, it's really not that confusing on its own, Alpharad even explained the "circle" of Lyric and Sonic well enough; the bad part came in the poor execution and shallow writing, but that would have been true regardless of the time travel
The problem really isnt "how did no one find these glitches" or "how did no one beta test this game ?", but more like... why did the publisher put such a strict deadline on a clearly unfinished game ? Sidenote: As bad and broken as this game is, the actual Sonic Boom TV Show is pretty fun. Its not the greatest show on earth, but they do have a couple of really funny episodes and bits. I think watching something like a "Best of the Sonic Boom TV show" is probably even worth reacting to, if you are interested.

Hey I have a great game recommendation… Vampire Surviors… don’t let it’s $5 price fool you… It’s amazing and really addictive… well the addictive bit is fitting as it was made by someone who designed Slot machines… also check out its DLC trailer… it’s animation is so amazing you wouldn’t believe me if I said this game was originally made by one person and even he doesn’t know why it’s so good

Sega released a trailer called Sonic Synergy which was basically the beta of this game. And based on that trailer this game was definitely beyond ambitious and had loads of potencial to be one of the best open world/large sandbox games. But... They got rushed so that's that story. I don't know what's with Meta Era Sonic games and getting rushed Least we got Frontiers to take place of best Sonic open world

For many fans, Lost World, Boom and Forces was the death combo that made them give up on the series gamewise. Its a goddamned miracle that Frontiers ended up being as good as it was. Also, Sonic Boom the show is actually pretty good. Season 2 in particular is really funny.
Since you've never played a Sonic game before, please don't let this be what you expect to see from Sonic. Sonic is an AMAZING franchise and has a lot of amazing and classic games! There have been some less good to straight up bad ones, but there have only been like 3 games that really deserve the hate.

Another dishonorable mention is Sonic Chronicles: the dark brotherhood, it was a sort of RPG for the DS, which not only wasn't very good, but also had SEGA SUED by one of the former writers of the Sonic Archie comics Ken penders because he thought he was entitled to the ownership of any sonic echidna characters related to knuckles which is a looooong story, but it caused the reboot and eventual cancellation of the Archie Sonic run in 2016, but we don't talk about him....

Its just that, unlike 20 years ago, you are not bound by having to send out the game in the most perfect state possible with no chance of fixing afterwards unless the game gets a Game of the Year Edition. No. The companies know that they can push a barely finished game in order to get sales as soon as possible, and that they can just finish the game after its released. They know that regardless of the broken mess it is, people will still buy or even preorder.

The Shadow in Boom is both an insult to his character and a pretty funny mockery of the caricature a lot of the fan base thinks he actually is.
