IMPRESSIVE FIRST TYPHOON DISPLAY AT RAF CONINGSBY "TURBO" 2024 TYPHOON DISPLAY PILOT AT 1,500ft

- Today, at RAF Coningsby, we were expecting to hear callsign ANARCHY1 carrying out his first practice display over the home base. However, when the taxiing display aircraft called out callsign "TURBO", we knew that this year was going to be different. TURBO is the new callsign for the display pilot, which has been borrowed from Lossiemouth's 6 Squadron.
This year's 2024 Typhoon Display Pilot is David "TURBO" Turnbull. He will be doing his first set of 10 practice displays at 1,500ft and then will lower it to 500ft hard deck before being allowed to smack it right down to 100ft. Once you hear callsign TURBO1, there will be excitement. However, Turbo will also be carrying out practice displays around the country, this is to prepare him and get used to performing displays away from the home base, which is what airshow season is all about. Before Turbo will be allowed to display at airshows, he will need to achieve and obtain his PDA (Public Display Authority). Without this insurance, he will not be able to display at airshows and venues. The other responsibility is once a pilot obtains a PDA, they cannot go more than 10 days with some sort of display, whether practice or real world at air shows. Failing this would result in having to re-apply for a PDA.
This is technically Turbo's second practice display, his first practice was near Wainfleet over the Wash at about 5,000ft. The Typhoon Display Team work-up begins with the selection of the Display Pilot, usually in Oct/Nov of the preceding season. The selection is conducted by the Officer Commanding (OC) 29 Squadron, Station Commander (Stn Cdr) RAF Coningsby and the Combat Air Force Commander (CA FC) with the final decision being made by Air Officer Commanding (AOC) No 1 Group (1 Gp). The selection is based on previous experience and ability as a Typhoon Pilot. Currently the Display Pilot is selected from the Qualified Pilot Instructors serving on 29 Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit (OCU).
Once selected the new Display Pilot shadows his predecessor for the end of the season and has the opportunity to fly in display practices flown at RAF Coningsby for currency. During this time the Display Pilot is tasked with designing their display sequence. The sequence is usually made up of previously approved aerobatic manoeuvres that can be flown in Typhoon. New manoeuvres require AOC 1 Gp to approve them. The Display Pilot must design not only a Full Display but also a Limited and Flat sequence used in the event of poorer weather.
During sequence development the Typhoon simulators are used to check the sequence before the airborne work-up is started. The simulator is also used throughout the work-up to prepare the Display Pilot for bad weather (including strong winds) and to practice aircraft handling in the unlikely event of an emergency during a display to ensure complete safety for the crowd.
The work-up continues progressively stepping down base heights from 1500ft to 500ft. A predefined number of practises at each height is to be achieved. At the final display height of 500ft, level turns and flypasts can also be conducted at 300ft and 100ft respectively.
The end of the work-up is the awarding of the Public Display Authority (PDA). AOC 1 Gp personally visits RAF Coningsby watches the display, reviews the work-up and if content grants the Display Pilot PDA, meaning they can then demonstrate the outstanding performance of Typhoon in front of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people during the summer display season.

Ladies, gents and teddy bears! Well, what do we all think of Turbo’s display? We need to mention that Turbo had to cut the display short and this was not finished sadly. But, that said, now awesome was his sequence! What were your favourite parts of the display? I wonder how he will end it?
Brilliant 👍. It's got to be the Max Alpha. Whooperoonie!! Loved the whole display though & Ted your video. Nikos for videographer of the decade! Of course I'm not biased 😛❤️
Thanks Ted for the upload of Turbo
It was amazing

What a start to the Display Season! Turbo sir, you've nailed it already! Thank you. Not forgetting the Typhoon Display Team too! Fabulous video Ted, bottle this one also please. ❤
Oii oiii Margo thank you so much. This was a great start to the display season and certainly got me back on track and loosened up the end of season camera skills. This was impressive and although Turbo didn’t get to finish his display, this was incredible! Especially at 1,500ft too! Ooohhh yeah
Magnificent! Turbo, you nailed it ❤️ Ted & Nikos, superb!

AMAZING! Cannot wait to see Turbo live at RIAT!! 😍
My father was in the RAF during World War II and he would have loved seeing this display. He would take me to loads of displays when I was younger which made me sign up at a display at Cottesmore sadly I changed my mind to work for him. Would love to see this at the Victory Show at Cosby this year
Oii Oii thank you so much for your comment. Respect to your father for serving 🫡
Wow! Thank you for this guys, and well done Turbo and 'mentor' Brighty. Have to say this tips the balance for me, my previous best was a USAF F22 Raptor, but now this RAF FGR4 display is second to none. Simply awesome 😎
Oiii oiii Brian thank you so much. Both F-22 and Typhoon are phenomenal aircraft. Ooohhh yeah
Fantastic! Love it. Spent a week in Tattershall watched the Typhoons loved every minute
Awesome glad you enjoyed
What a display and what control by Turbo. Absolutely brilliant.

Man, what a noise!
Missed all of today's stream due to work, so thanks for posting Ted & Nikos, great camera work
Oiii oiii Colin. Being underneath the display which is in reality never really going to happen at airshows, produces some wonderful sounds ooohhh yeah
Oi oi!!! What a result catching this today!! It's always exciting to see these displays being put together and this is no exception - that roll into the max alpha is different class though!! Ohhhh yeahhhhhh!!
Oiii oiiii Andy thank you so much. The slow roll into the max alpha OMS
Considering he didn’t even get to finish his display in the usual stylish way, it was a phoonomenal display from start to finish. Gotta agree about the slow roll moving into the alpha max was sensational!! Incredible videography Nikos and seeing this in 4k on a 50inch tv is the highlight of my month. Go Turbo Go!!
Oiiii oiiii Bex 🤙🏼 Absolutely, didn’t even finish and still got the TCS vote 🤙🏼 slow roll into max alpha won it. He could have ended it there lol. That was the absolutely salmon leaped oooohhhhhhh yeah
Fantastic display by TURBO cannot wait to see you at the airshow in Northern Ireland later this year. Stay safe and see you then.
First time seeing the new display, and it's breathtaking - thank you Turbo!. Excellent tracking Ted and Nikos!

Turbo is already a TCS legend after this awesome show of skill. That’s why we have so much pride and respect for all the men and women of the RAF and all our Armed Forces. Can’t wait for display season to start now and see the finished display. I’m pretty sure it’ll be epic and Turbo will do the country proud 👌🏻

Absolutely incredible flying skills in that display by Turbo 1.. Fantastic camara work Nikos to capture his first display.. Air shows of the uk - watch out - Amazing..👍👍
Oiii oiii Jimmy well said, Turbo has already shown the skill even on an unfinished display at 1,500ft. Ooohh yeah 🤙🏼
Such a unique spin on the typhoon display after brighty last year knocked it out the park. Turbo has already started that way and it just shows how awesome these RAF pilots are. Big shout out to the display team and Nikos for the camera work. Its amazing to see and some of those negative g manoeuvres are crazy. Loved it, cant wait to see it for real.

Even at the higher level training routine, he flew it like he stole it!. He is gonna be probably the best typhoon display pilot we have seen for years, even at display level! The control maxed alpha was something else!. I have never even seen the Italians do that, Spiced up the slow speed pass!.
Oiii oiii thank you so much. That “Salmon Leaper” (hehe, our own term for the slow role into max alpha) was the show stopper. Absolutely incredible ooohh yeah
I live on a Raf base and this has been at the air show the Last couple of years and it's awesome 👌 especially when it's upside down flying over the house 👏👏 and the noise is crazy
Tremendous Turbo, ant wait to see the new livery for the display jet…….imagine if it’s an image of the Ted mobile😂. Love that slow turn in to the max alpha, could watch that all day ❤🫡
……the tea slurp at the end…..actually laughing aloud at that

What a sound!
Oohhh yeah
Utterly awesome.
Oooohhhh yeah
That is one talented pilot! Interesting to see the energy bleed under high-G's at low speeds and the quick recovery from the engine thrust in the Typhoon. The roll rate, even under load is quite impressive. The only thing that this demo was missing is a proper high-speed pass!
Nice work Ted and Nikos
Oii oiii thanks Henk 🤙🏼
Fantastic loved it thank you

Great video again Nikos what make and model scanner do you have ? Take care looking forward to your next video

Great vid (agree on the roll into high alpha as the golden move) are the practices announced anywhere?
Oiii oiii thank you very much. The practice displays are not publicised.
WOW that almost lazy slow roll into the high alpha pass... lost for words! And some negative Gs that must be very unpleasant... WHAT A DISPLAY! Thank you Turbo and 2024 RAF Typhoon Display Team! Looking forward to seeing you live!
That manoeuvre Arjen is the Salmon Leaper. Oooohhh yeah. It sure was an amazing display
Lol 😆 🤣 😂 Ending!! Nikos & Mug in harmony..
😂😂😂 ehhhhhhhhgghhhh lol 😂
Great precision and control. I would like to see this man move one of the vectored thrust machines around the sky.

Oiiiii oiiiii Bex thank you so much for the super thanks 🤙🏼 This is most kind. Thank you so much for all your support 🤙🏼
That barrel roll to max alpha is the best move I’ve seen for a few years, I used to to love the double loop from takeoff shame they no longer do that
That manoeuvre is the Leaping Salmon 🤙🏼😎
This performance gets better more times I watch it now your camera work Nikos superb
Oiii oiii Steve thank you so much ooohhh yeah
Turbooooooo awesome argh yeah
Oooohhh yeah
What a display
Oiii oiii Dan 🤙🏼it was awesome
Slow roll to bleed speed into the Max Alpha and inverted towards Nikos with a Vector Roll....Very impressive.
Oiii oiii Pat 🤙🏼
Loved that, loved the camera work as well, it added a different dynamic to it. Definitely some moves in there that I haven't seen a typhoon perform before, some similarities with the falling leaf manoeuvre of the F 22? I would imagine that takes proper skill without vectored thrust?
But I don't mean to be little the performance, great stuff, well done.
Oiii oiiii Michael. Thanks so much. Well said, every aircraft has its limits but so does the pilot. It is when the pilot pushes the aircraft to its limits that we see such skill. Well spotted regarding the ‘falling leaf’, this must rely on the computers of the typhoon to keep it, well, airborne I guess. No idea on that but yes, incredible
@@TedConingsby wow , feel honoured to receive such a well worded message from you dude. I grew up in Norwich and I used to go to RAF Coltishall and watch the 41st, 6th and 54th sqd Jaguars that were stationed there, in all around 20 jets.
On the emergency fire truck lane with the yellow gate leading to the runway, the jets would pull up to take off about 50 m away but I'd climb through the farmer's fence and head down to the field and sit under the glide slope with me binocs. Ah those were the days. Anyway nice one, thanks again Nikos

Not half bad, with it being in workup still.

Great flying by Turbo, great Ted camera, and some beautiful landings by great pilots , no smoke seen, smooth stuff indeed. 👍👍👍
Turbo already a TCS legend 🤙🏼😎
Gawd!😮
Do the pilots write all their own routine? Or are there certain elements that HAVE to be included & the pilots can add their own bits??
Oiii oiii Shane great question. So it is a little bit of both. There are various manoeuvres that are allowed and the display pilot will put these together. Ultimately it is all about safety. When the time comes for Turbo to acquire his PDA (public display authority), the auditors will need to judge the display safety. You need a PDA to perform displays at Airshows. Producing manoeuvres that are unsafe could be costly. Hope this helps
Thanks Nikos 🙂
Makes me want to get a ticket for cosford
