  • The RAF Typhoon Display Team amazes crowds around the world across its display season.
But, considering the manoeuvres the pilots undertake and the G-force placed upon their bodies, what kit does a Typhoon pilot need while in the cockpit?
Forces News met the RAF's 2024 Typhoon display pilot Flight Lieutenant David Turnbull, known as Turbo, to find out what he needs when flying and how the kit helps save lives and protects him against the G-force.

It was awesome they he mentioned the Squippers, when I was a Squipper the pilots often forgot it takes a team

I do appreciate the cool and calm nature of British fast jet pilots. Listen to them in the cockpit when doing aerobatics, and low level flying through the mach loop... they sound so relaxed and matter of fact about what they're doing... almost as if nothing could possibly phase them. On the flip side, if I was in that situation, I'd be constantly fighting back the thought that I'm flying this insanely amazing thing and being paid with actual money for doing it. And I don't think lapses in focus like that at 100s of knots low level would end so well.

But you would not be in that situation without appropriate training and qualifications so it's a bit of a pointless point to make.

    From New Scientist:
“We have had people who have been perfectly conscious at 6 g,” says physiologist Alec Stevenson of UK-based defence firm Qinetiq. "Others pass out at 3 g", he says.
Pilots can boost their natural g tolerance by training inside centrifuges, like the one Qinetiq has in Farnborough in Hampshire.

Just a bit of science to show that making it look easy does not meant that it is. Flight simulator software and vivid imagination are one thing, being able to do it for real is genuinely impressive.

Sick bag. And another sick bag. And a couple of backup sick bags in my handbag which itself is a multi-role piece of kit with a waterproof lining... 🤢

That’s some bad mfking taste mate. 11 people killed, 17 (?) injured and the pilot surviving with that on his conscience - not to mention it was a civil-owned Hawker Hunter T7 pulling a bad loop.
Completely irrelevant and poor taste. Cockwomble.

Saw the thumbnail and wondered (After seeing so many spleen bursting woke articles in the news) how long before the word "Cockpit" becomes "Problematic..." for being "Insert woke outrage of the day"

You have been conned by the NAZI-lite brigade. "Woke" = "Thoughtful", or "Considerate". Not insipid. That's the position of the puritanical religious right wing. The sort that would be outraged if a woman showed her ankles in public in Britain a little while ago (If you want to check it out, there is a decent Wikipedia on the history of "Woke", but too many people now use it as a silly substitute for "Things I don't like" instead of realising that brutally enforcing something such as a burkha is the opposite of Woke.)
