- This year's RAF Typhoon display pilot, Flt Lt Matt Brighty callsign 'ANARCHY1', taxis out with ZJ914, nicknamed 'Blackjack'. It is also known as Ted's Typhoon because on the 28th May 2021 at 1005L, Blackjack had her maiden flight and who was flying? Yes, that's right Ladies, Gents and Teddy Bears, out very own Sqn Ldr Ted!
On the 5th July 2023, the Ted Coningsby channel reached a milestone of 21K subscribers. The Typhoon display was our celebration to which sadly, towards the final part of the display, the aircraft suffered a fault. This resulted in the pilot to end the display and take it out into a holding pattern to try to relieve the issue and/or to await clearance to land.
Brighty is ferociously impressive and he really shows off the manoeuvrability of the Eurofighter Typhoon. Brighty said in an interview before the season that he will "keep the display sequence more tight" and aims to keep the sequence in a more compact space. This will possibly mean that high speed passes may not be present in the sequences in order to keep the manoeuvres confound to a tighter space.
RAF Typhoon display pilots are selected from 29 Squadron, which is the OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) at RAF Coningsby. 'Brighty' has also flown with XI(F) Squadron, which is one of two front-line combat ready squadrons at Coningsby.
Brighty had also been involved in a special WWII flypast in honour of Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC. Brighty flew the pilot wings of Wg Cdr Guy Gibson in his Typhoon around Lincoln on the 24th January 2022. Gibson flew most of his operations from Scampton and Coningsby.
The wings were on a uniform that was left at RAF Coningsby aft Wg Cdr Guy Gibson VC was killed in action in 1944. Gibson helped form 617 Squadron (more famously renowned as 'the dam busters') during early 1943 for the specialised and extraordinary perilous pursuit of Op. Chastise, using the 'bouncing bomb' to breach the dams in Germany's Rhur Valley during the nights of the 16th and 17th of May 1943. What an honour for Brighty to fly the very wings of Wg Cdr Gibson in his Typhoon...

I'm jealous of you Brits because you get to watch Air Force Bases so close. Us yanks aren't allowed anywhere near stuff like this unless it's an organized air show. Typhoons aren't the best looking jets to me since I'm ehh for delta wings and hate kanards, but Typhoons performance is absolutely impressive
Hi Dale. We are lucky here in the UK and love aircraft. The Typhoon is a pretty aircraft but she does not have Canards, the Typhoon has ‘Foreplanes’. They are different to Canards.
What can I say - Flt Ln Matt Brighty and Black Jack at Coninsgsby ! Nikos you told me way back in March there would be loads of time to see Brighty display before Air shows got under way ! Day after day stream after stream at Coningsby no Brighty no Black Jack no Bingo Slots. Cosford arrived and it was time to see the display I so wanted to see but no Black Jack 😪 Brighty did the display and as always entertained us all.For me the icing on the cake (Black Jack) was missing even though the display was top notch . This stream was worth waiting for, how he gets the Typhoon to do what he wants and the way it effortlessly becomes putty in his hands is just poetry in motion. These two were made for each other. This stream is mine Ohhh Yeahhh Nikos you delivered
Nikos remembers those famous last words lol and every time Blackjack was either displaying somewhere else or displaying when we weren’t there. Even at Cosford, it was not Blackjack in use… then finally, when it mattered… 21 a game of cards is called Blackjack… 21k reached …. Blackjack came out oooohhh yeah

So what did the technical issue turn out to be? Also, do Typhoon pilots have G "pressure suits?"
Yes they sure do.. They can pull up to 9gs in the typhoon.
Hi Wes, yes they have a G-suit and I think it’s the best in the world currently. If I remember the pilots telling me when the F22 pilots rate them. We have a members only video of Nikos being fitted with one on by Sainty

Hi yes, usually Monday - Friday but activity is pot luck and make sure you check if they are nights as they won’t really start until 1630 onwards.

Monday - Thursday but Fridays are usually half day. All military ops do not have a publicised schedule, so it is pot luck

I never did look it up but can the Tuphoon do a cobra maneouvre like the Saab Viggen and the SU-57? We saw the near stall speed approach but not the combined pop-up and slow. (I'm guessing if desperate enough in real combat a pilot might try it anyway but it might be outside the normal envelope for these aircraft) Also - props for the G's - the suit clearly fits well!
I don’t think the ‘Cobra’ manoeuvre would even be effective in combat. I think it’s more of a Hollywood thing to be honest. The g-suit for the Typhoon pilot is so good that the F22 pilots love them too. Ooohhh yeah
If a pilot tried a Cobra in a combat situation, he'd be dead very quickly, since:
1) he loses all his kinetic energy performing it and is therefore a sitting duck and
2) it's designed to shoot at an enemy behind the plane and if an enemy is behind you, you'd be dead before you could execute it..
Brighty is a legend! Hope Ted has his anti G fur in tip top condition for his flight, he's going to need it!

Why is it carrying a drop tank? I would of thought it would be conpletely clean for a display?
Hi Neil, so the Typhoon displays can be at airshows with or without an airfield. If the Typhoon needs to transit to an airshow and display straight away, it will most likely have a drop tank with enough fuel to get there. The display will never have any fuel in the drop tank. For airshows such as RIAT, the Typhoon can display clean as it will take off land there (at RIAT, RAF FAIRFORD). So the display can choose between ‘clean’ or not.

The practice displays are for all airshows. Since Brighty achieved his PDA (PUBLIC DISPLAY AUTHORITY), he needs to make sure he doesn’t go more 10 days without a practice/real display or he will loose his PDA. All pilots must have a PDA to display at airshows/festivals etc.
